Game itself aside, I also can't fathom why they dropped the Bit.Trip moniker. It is what makes it its own unique runner.
Look at the main bit.trip games. Runner2 and 3 are nothing like those visually so they got rid of the name.
Oh that's true. I forgot the second game didn't have it either. Yeah, a collection of the 6(?) Bit.Trip Runner games would be amazing on Switch.
Well, Runner 2 was titled "BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 Future Legend of Rhythm Alien"
LOL I fogot that. Yeah, Charles says that when the game starts :)
The bit trip series technically ended, so it's more of a spinoff now. If you want you can read an article about it or watch all the cutscenes, its pretty sad actually. Runner 2 and 3 also are less of a bit trip game, as the narrative told is more whimsical, more descriptive and less serious than the predecessor
I know this might sound strange to some, but I'm actually happy if the game is overall shorter. I never actually finished Runner 2 because there were so many same-y levels that were all pretty brutally unforgiving.
martinaee agreed
Yep
You're making excuses for this games, this game being shorter is not good, less is not better
Muhair Alowais / Just a penguin not really, less does not equal better
The Truth Hurts
And more does also not equal better... ^^
Just got it for $1.99 and I’m loving it. It is my first runner though.
Its 1$ right now do you recommend it?
al theriault I mean you can’t go wrong with it for a $1 the gameplay is pretty fun and the soundtrack is amazing. It’s also one of the most polished $1 games you’ll get
@@GenesisLZH ok i got it
Same, its alot of fun
I just got it for that much as well!
I thought Runner2 was great on WiiU. (Frustrating, but great) Does anyone else think though, that the main characters and obstacles REALLY need to stand out more from the background?
irvyne yes i can agree it can get a bit distracting trying to focus on the visuals and characters
Is this the first time Charles martinet is playable? It's weird, but I love it.
Are there any reviews out there giving it highly positive reviews? It's unfortunate it's getting mixed reviews. Such an incredible game. Lol at replaying stages. These games are made for that! And the gem paths are completely diffetent.
It was my first runner game, and yet I adored it, and unlocked every character. Although, I played 2-2 onward with the later added more checkpoints mode.
The visuals are amazing, yall just dont know how to have fun
it just looks unpolished and overall worse than the past games
Runner2 looks better in my opinion, but this video uses the Switch version. The Switch version in comparison to the PlayStation and Steam versions is full looking, lacks lighting in some areas, less particle effects and even straight up removes some stuff in the background that may have caused the game to drop frames. The Switch version doesn't do it justice.
Although Runner2 was better when it came to pacing the difficulty over longer stretches, the stretch often felt more repetitive than Runner3 ever seemed.
Also, completing Runner2 ALSO required at least 3 plays per level, for the three difficulty levels. And also getting a Perfect+ on each difficulty by hitting the Bullseye in the bonus chance.
Bullseye? You mean Bullshit (feels so bad to miss it after replaying the level ;-; )
The game doesn't require those extra playthroughs though. I like that the content is there if you feel like playing the levels again, they are giving us more to do besides run through the level one time.
The second half of your comment is what stopped me from completing Runner2 100%. After getting a Perfect+ on every level on the hard difficulty, going back to all of the levels again and getting Perfect+ on easy and normal sounded too tedious to do.
Can I just say that I love the way Ash writes? All of the clever figures of speech, unique word choice, and structure are really fantastic, and as someone who's been writing reviews consistently for about a year now, it's really difficult to make all of that come together.
The complaint about having to play each level 3 times if you want to do a completionist playthrough doesn't really make sense. You had to do the exact same thing in Runner 2, except it was even more monotonous since the paths were identical with the only difference being additional or fewer obstacles depending on the difficulty.
s0faking on top of complaining about playing levels multiple times, he complains about having fewer levels. They made a game with fewer but more complex levels with more to do. The reviewer doesn't get that.
Doesnt mean it was a good choice.
Doesnt mean it was a good choice.
I was just about to buy it when I saw the review and watched it. During I was a little worried if I should still buy it but now I did anyway. I mean I bought Steamworld Dig 2 because Mr. Paulsen here loved it and I could never fully get into it. Maybe I'll love something that he just liked? :D
I am beyond hyped for this cant wait. Feel like its the perfect portable game
Interesting. I haven't played the Bit.Trip series before, so Runner 3 will be my first game in the series when I grab it (probably digital). The replaying of levels doesn't seem like too much of a problem with the branching paths, since that means you get different experiences in the same level. Getting all of the collectibles and grabbing stuff for costumes sounds like it MIGHT be a chore, though I'll probably need to replay a few levels myself to see if it bugs me. It looks good otherwise.
On the art style, it looks technically ugly, but not in a bad way. The way it's designed, it sort of works in its own way to come off as very surreal, rather than off putting. I notice a lot of artists trying to go for less traditionally appealing looks, and if nothing else, it feels like one of the better cases. Ugly, but not offensive to the eye.
Just a heads up, the older Bit trip games, even Runner 1, are very different in tone and visuals to Runner 3, and are also less forgiving, Runner 1 doesn't have checkpoints, and some of the levels get pretty long.
Some of your complaints seemed kinda nitpicky. The fewer levels is made up for with a greater scope of secrets and content. Also I don't have any issue with the visuals. In fact I love how I am getting serious DHMIS vibes from it all
TheWolfgabe okay good for you but you're not the reviewer
Triablos Doesn't mean he cannot share his opinions.
I still think a game like this would’ve benefited from a health system like Thumper has, instead of the measly one checkpoint.
JH Sounds there was only one checkpoint in Runner2 aswell (except Only A Man and the bosses).
I wish Bit Trip Runner 1 got ported to the switch, I want that 8bit style goodness on the GO
oh boy
Well, do I have some news for you!
This review was really heard to follow. The reviewer seemed more like a roller coaster right going up and down, down and up and down, down, down and up and down eventually telling me that he “liked” it but then immediately going into more reasons not to like it.
Maybe we should start reviewing reviews lol.
Interesting criticisms Ash. On one hand, I can see how replaying levels to a certain point can be annoying, but on the other if the level design and music are engaging enough I wouldn't mind going through it again to get all the characters. I was wondering if the dynamic camera angle would be a hindrance in some levels and they seems to be the case too.
Great review as usual! Still grabbing it Day 1.
I'm enjoying the level variety compared to Runner 2 so the shorter length is definitely welcome, and I don't miss the blocks you had to deflect, but I do miss watching yourself zoom back to the start of the stage when you get hit, although the new dynamic movements make it obvious why that wouldn't work
This is an odd choice, but this is my favourite game of all time. It's just so fun and the music.....SO GOOD
I loved runner 2 so I’ll certainly be picking this up even if it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor. For it to be portable now as well is the icing on the cake.
They need to bring Bit Trip Saga to the Switch. I bought it for Wii and 3DS
Lol so many nitpicks. Games fantastic. And the loading times aren't the fastest but they aren't 20 seconds. Just counted and the level loaded in under 9 seconds
Interesting. Most people seem to say this is a better game than Runner 2.
I dunno, it feels more challenging for sure and that is indeed rewarding, but as a whole experience, I still think 2 is a more complete, complex game. And for me personally, some objects not interacting with the music is a major bummer
It's a stereo.
Omega it's a boom box!
I dunno... I know, that I need to play this game at first, but this pissed me off only because I don't understand, why Video came back(?) to his magic's world with C.Girl... I don't understand, when it is, because it can't be after runner 2 (after runner 2 goes Fate and Flux) Maybe, of caurse, Runner 3 going after Flux, when Video *spoiler* and (this is my blowing minds theory) went to the freaking The Behemoth world, where Pink Knight from Super Meat Boy comes from, tell this story to bears and they are made doll storytail like BattleBlock Theater!!!
Runner 2 and 3 takes place before CommanderVideo dies and becomes ethereal. Possibly paralell universe or dream because it's more out there than the original six
I love Bit.Trip Runner to death, so I'm sure I'll love playing this. I've played the first world in the original game about 100+ times, and I was never bored of it.
This seems like a good overall game, but somehow I don't think it's a 25 dollar game like it will be on the Eshop in the US at launch (from what it says on the Nintendo site.) I think dropping that at least 5 dollars if not 10 at launch might have been a better idea. Hopefully it sells well, but for me personally 25 seems like a lot to ask.
martinaee $12 in Mexico eShop
martinaee 25 dollars is chump change.. the game is well worth it at that price
i got it for 35 as a physical copy, dont mind spending a bit extra to ACTUALLY HAVE THE GAME and not just the rights to it lol
well to be fair 1 stage counts this way like 2 or 3 different stages cause first you do the 100 gold than a new path opens and that new path changes the stage so much that we can call it a new stage while backtracking can be fun for some players but not everyone like that
I'm extremely happy that runner is getting a sequel and hope it gets another one as well I will definitely buy this game
Good review. I'm a little sad that it didn't live up to FLORA but I'm going to have a blast scratching that itch!
I think the reason why they apparently made this one so ball bustingly difficult (I’ve yet to play it but I did find Runner 2 pretty easy on normal) is because of the rave reviews games like Celeste (which is entirely built around pissing you off) and other niche rage platformers get time after time again. Still may pick it up at some point...but $40 for the physical edition is a little too rich.
I like the older ones that were called bit.trip runner or flux
It's $1.99 (90% off) until 4/2.
You weren’t kidding about the difficulty. They don’t even beat around the bush. Took me like two hours just to clear the checkpoint of Stage 1-4. I officially hate stairs now. They really want you to be a jump cancel master right from the very beginning. I can’t say the challenge isn’t fair, but they stake their claim from the start. Just a warning if you think DK Tropical Freeze (non-Funky) was too hard to clear 100%, you might have serious trouble with this game. This is the game where the K levels of DK enters the normal levels of this one. But what will really get you is that 1-5 is like several times easier than 1-4. You fly through that like it was nothing and you ask yourself, how does this difficulty ramp go in the future?
This review is spot on. Best review i have watched so far. Keep up the good work.
Looks like a great game to me and with that a must buy. Although I do think it reminds me of Temple Run and Subway Surfers on mobile app games, but far more advanced.
Jeez, there are some pretty mixed opinions about this game, huh? Really the only thing that bothers me is the fact that they changed the spring noise to some generic bouncy sound that doesn't flow with the music. Still want to try the game though,.
I think it would be cool if they also revisited the other Bit.trip games and do something new with them. a sequel to Beat/Flux would be pretty neat.
EDIT: Also, i'm going to be kind of annoyed if you can't unlock 8-bit CommanderVideo, I don't mind his 3D model, but come on, it's literally what he originally looked like, and you could unlock 8-bit CV in Runner 2.
ToxicBoo nothing new. The series has always been divisive. People saying the game is too hard, now its too easy, it belongs on a cell phone. No one seems happy but the fans quietly keep having a blast.
I don't know, Runner was always charmingly simplistic to me. It seems that the developers idea of making a sequel is to just add more shit. Runner 3 looks very messy.
I did always think that Runner 2 was too long though (probably the only person to think that but w.e) especially if you wanted to 100% it. Having to repeat every single level on three difficultys and maybe failing the stupid cannon at the end having to do it all again when there were so many levels killed the end game for me. To top that off, Runner 2's levels started to feel very samey, almost nothing changed beyond the first couple of levels and the last couple of levels in each area.
I've only played Bit Trip Runner and oh boy did I love that game, I skipped runner 2 because I wasn't interested, now I'm excited for Runner3
Core is my favorite. Followed by Flux. I will admit I find this harder than the original
Looks good!
I wonder if they gonna include the original crew as in Runner 1
With Meatboy and that giant robot, and the others
I hope they do, it would be interesting
Missed btr 2 anyways, but loved btr 1. This should be satisfying to me.
Very critical review and then a big fat Liked
Oh boy 4 AM
Warped Logic
SpongeBob reference? xD
Charles' voice of Mario Martinet
The Ren & Stimpy like visuals bug the crap out of me. It's like they mad a world that Commander Video doesn't fit in.
5:00 AM is review time
The idea that each level is longer to make up for the shorter number of levels is backwards. They definitely decided to make longer levels and, as a result of limitations, that meant they made fewer levels. You made it sound almost like they were trying to hide the lower number of levels behind longer levels, even though the overall amount of development would be roughly consistent with the previous game.
And calling the 2nd game's art style "minimalist" is... well that's not what minimalist means.
Lots of weird quirks like that in this review. I know reviews are subjective, but I think theorizing on developer intent or misusing words just because you feel a certain way is outside of the scope of this type of criticism. There's good arguments here masked by some rough writing, I think some more time with an editor would have helped.
Am I the only one who heard some of the Inspector Gadget theme in that boardwalk level? Maybe I've been listening to too many high quality rips.
It's still a good game and a bit more challenging for sure which I like. But Runner 2 was a far more better experience.
That fucking emoji like, lol
Don't throw your switch in frustration because if this game!
Great review. Thanks
I don’t know if a lot of people think this or it’s just me, but this games looks really slow. Do the levels get faster?
Hmmm I don't know what to think about this game 😅
Well if it looks fun give it a try you might enjoy it
Kaiiris its trash
The Truth Hurts Haha okay XD
Don't listen to the people that says this game is bad... Bit Trip Runner series is amazing pure gameplay joy. If you are a real gamer that loves challenge and enjoy great music: this game is for you. Just go listen the full Runner 2 Soundtrack in youtube. Your ears will have an orgasm.
Woah, this game RUNS very smoothly *ba dum tss*
I lock myself out
The hitboxes are weird and there might be (maybe just for me) some issues with the input (xbox 360 controller). Other than that it's alright but not worth 30$!
The character in the thumbnail looks familiar
*AMOG US*
The first game came out 2009. No Among us
Is this worth 30 to £35 for the physical copy
ben31uk its a rare find but awesome game
Taking my break second break from Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition. Its way too goddamn fun. But i’ve never played a runner game. Should i try it?
Edit: Thanks for the warning!
Spring Man
I wouldn't recommend this if you're new to the series. you should start off with the Runner 2.
Runner 2 is better so get that one plus its cheaper.
Spring Man no
Runner 2 is much better than this crap
$1.60 is not a bad price XD
I don’t really like the “Switch” mechanic, Runner wasn’t designed to be like Temple Run but luckily it doesn’t look like it will be used to often.
Ok wait a minute, you said that the plot of Runner 3 takes place right where Runner 2 left off.
Well sorry sir, but you are wrong BIT.TRIP Fate takes place right after Runner 2 and then BIT.TRIP Flux takes place after that.
Then after Flux I think that the story of BIT.TRIP is over so that could be why the game is just called Runner 3 because the game isn't cannon in the BIT.TRIP saga.
Coolguy RUNNER3 is after RUNNER2 and then FATE
Hmmm runner3 or super meat boy for my switch?
Charles, Mario Martinet
this plays like rhythm thief :R03
Well thank you for warning me NOT to buy this for my son who gets frustrated easily.
It looks fun for me, but it would be my first runner game. Should I buy it?
As someone who has fiddled around with the bit.trip series, I'd say this play this one or Runner2 first;
Runner 3 seems fine to start off with, it just seems to get serious more quickly than the other games.
Runner 2 has a very forgiving difficulty curve, but is also 3-times longer.
Both seem fine, its just a matter of length vs learning curve. Also, if you play the original, better get serious.
No... buy runner 2 ....it's much better than this
I wish they'd re-release the original on the Switch. The graphics on these new ones look way too 'busy'.
They're intentionally supposed to be busy. You're supposed to focus on the main gameplay. The stuff in the background is made to be cluttered to throw you off and make you lose your focus.
I just want new Bit. Trip games already. As good as Runner is, it's getting old. Give us a sequel to a different game from the original saga, or heck, a new game or series all together.
DrMrProfessorPatrick I just want a sequel to beat and flux. New gameplay will also be nice.
The BIT.TRIP tale is complete. You can't really add much to it.
Captain Olimar Clearly that's not the case if they made two new Runner games after the series "ended". Supposedly they're cannon too, and fit somewhere into the story.
4:49 just why
Do you still need to do that stupid bullseye thing at the end of the level? That was the only things stopping me from teying to 100% runner 2
Unfortunately, yes.
Luckily, though, the removal of the difficulty select means you have to do the bullseye BS way less often than in Runner 2, where you had to complete each level three times and get a bullseye on each one.
I’m only here to see some dank dabs.
Its £0.98 now
When they post a review at 2 am
ShurikanBlade oh boy, 2 AM!
DanTheMan33088 my favorite time to watch a video to see if a game is good. Nothing is better than 2am!
That whole "Hero Quest" thing really seems like a massive pacebreaker. Ugh.
1202 nice.
xd lo conseguí a 60 centavos en Switch :u
I have no idea how can someone find this vomit-filled aesthetic nice to look at.
Eh, The graphics aren't for me, but it doesn't bother me, the gameplay is what makes me want the game
I would say the opposite, how do you not like this? Looks like a psychonauts game in hd. Or some twisted colorful tim burton game
like he said its subjective some will like it like me and some wont like you
No Filter A Nintendo Podcast yeah! that visual style but with none of the things that make those games actually good. It's Runner. Bit trip games are simple. They could do other things but it's the same thing they've done twice already. They've had a pongish game and a shooting ones too, they're good games but I haven't bothered to ever play them again after beating them. The initial charm wears off after the first play through unless you're an addict.
CAOcreations that is true it definitely will wear off however i dont think thats a bad thing there are a lot of games that you wont bother playing after the first play through despite the first play through being pretty fun and if the games is just alright to you then maybe it isnt your cup of tea anymore i know im still pretty interested in this series
Don't think I'll enjoy this much.
They should just port Runner 2 to the switch.
Seeing trends with publishers and devs wanting to get everything on the sweet sweet Switch platform, I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. The original (6?) Bit.Trip games should totally get ported to Switch too. Those honestly might be the best. Super simple, elegant, and all about game play and music/rhythm.
Yes, the first series is the best. I keep my Wii U around strictly for that game.
No need to, ...is on the psvita already.
Vita is dead though. Switch is very much alive. Why get a game for a dead system?
Music wise, it seems alot more bland than Runner 2. Shame because running and doing things to the music is kinda what this game is about.
It’s too...off for me...I dunno...I just don’t feel like getting it
But you can play Run 3 for free on coolmathgames. 0/10
I hate game sequels that are console exclusive when the previous entries were multiplatform. It makes no sense and is really dumb
So series like Bayonetta?
Irony is a weapon yeah, actually. While I get that bayonetta 2 is a special case and wouldn’t have been made without nintendo, it still sucks that it’s locked to the wiiu and switch. I want good games to be played by as much people as possible. But runner 3 has no reason being a switch exclusive. It just is... just cuz.
Kodie Russell it probably will come to other platform but it is also a business decision but platformer usually sell better on Nintendo systems just like shooter sell better on Sony and Microsoft
Kodie Russell its coming later to xbox one and ps4, comes out on pc too on launch, shut up.
Kodie Russell that's only sometimes. Like for instance Bayonetta 2 is a switch exclusive because the game would not have been made without Nintendo, as they basically funded the entire game. There's usually a reason. Also, runner 3 is on PC
runner 1 is still the game for me. not hampered by an ugly visual design and possesing a darker, more minimalist tone which i prefer. runner 2 and runner 3 made me feel like the series has become a zombie tbh.
I’m so turned off by this games aesthetic and literally just anything it shows. Don’t understand the appeal. :/
This game is just an auto-running mobile cellphone game.
The Truth Hurts This comment is painful to look at
this looks so basic and boring
It's a trvp ..... your kidding
It's a trvp you must never have played a runner game huh, welp i wont judge you but they require a lot focus and skill
It's a trvp that's because it is
It's essentially the Endless Runner games that you'd find on mobile phones that Nintendo fans have a tendency to shit on a casual basis.
Hypocrisy on a very large scale.
I agree, looks incredibly boring
this game looks so ugly... artstyle and graphics are just horrible. how can you say it looks nice? o_O
Your kidding....
You have to have played the other runners games to appreciate the art style and not everything has to look realistic to have good graphics
It's supposed to look grotesque
lol thats not the point.
lexymon1 Uh, yeah. That's the point. The art style is supposed to look grotesque
I’m so confused why anyone is the least bit excited for this. It’s literally just some shitty running mobile game. You wouldn’t be saying this about a random mobile game despite the fact they are the same thing. The only good thing it really has is Charles martinet and better graphics than normal.
Kayden 21 No it isnt some random mobile runner game. 1) Mobile infinite runners are randomly generated while runner has preset levels that are excellently designed and sync up with the music
2) Bit.trip runner was one of the first runner games.
Because Nintendo fanboys get excited for trash, they haven't had a good new game in 8 months so they resort this buffoonery.
The Truth Hurts runner has been multi platform and still been heavily praised for years
The Truth Hurts Jeez, just because you personally don't like it doesn't you have to shit on the people who do.
The Truth Hurts well that’s just not true at all...
Looks boring as hell
Runner 2 was so much better and so much bigger than this trash, looks they made it easier for kids this time around.
You clearly didn't watch the review. Watch it and then I might take you seriously
John Whitmer ....it's actually easier it has less levels
metalgamer 817 yes... after seeing this I concluded that runner 2 is much harder and it has more levels
harmless creep I did watch the review WTF you on kid?
Go play the bonus levels unlocked by collecting Gold and try saying with a straight face "Yeah, Runner 2 was harder."
