Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody told you it was a happy tale, if somebody said I was just your average guy, not a care in the world... somebody lied. But let me assure you, this, like any other story worth telling, is all about a Band. [Cut to The Beatles ] That Band, The Band next door. The Beatles. The Band I loved since before I even liked Bands.

Go watch some videos of Ringo after the Beatles. 90% of the time there is a second drummer playing along side.
I've never seen a drummer so inept. If he was so great, why doesn't he have any great independent performances post Beatles?
His greatness comes from being IN a band that was great. But that doesn't mean his drumming was a major factor.

Ringo was also the first Beatle to leave the group. During the recording of the White Album in 1968, he felt “Unloved” and after a few Hostile recording sessions, he left to go on vacation. During this time, Paul had to jump in and play the drums, and in the song “Back in the U.S.S.R, that’s actually Paul playing the drums. After 2 week, Ringo got a Telegram basically saying that the 3 members missed him and wanted him to come home, which he did. He returned to see that George put flowers all over his Drum set, and the message saying welcome back. Another fun fact. Whilst on vacation, Ringo wrote Octopus Garden.

      @harrisonmccartney4878 5 лет назад +10

Yeah, I can imagine him not being happy with how his "fans" were abusing his signature, but I think he also wanted them to know that even though he's not replying to fan mail anymore, he still loves and cares about the fans who aren't trying to take advantage of him. He just got caught up a little with being upset about the few that tried to make a quick buck off his name, but he was also trying not to make it seem like he was refusing to sign stuff because he didn't care about his fans. He had his reasons, and they were good ones, and thankfully Ringo is still a nice enough bloke to make time to come out and meet and talk with the people who like him, so he's still a cool dude.

I was working at a Denny's in South Lake Tahoe, back in 1979....when came into the restaurant during the 3rd week of December. One of our waitresses swore she had spotted him the previous day, while picking her husband up at the airport. I don't think any of us believed her.....but then in walks Ringo. He was with a couple of women & 2 or 3 little kids. It was mid-afternoon, so there weren't too many other customers in there. We seated them in the back, where they sort of had the area to themselves. I was just a busboy, but recall running over to the table a few times to refill their water glasses or remove empty dishes. He had our fish & chips. I think the waitresses got most of the plates, but I made off with his fork....LOL. The best part of the story was....when they went to leave, he realized he had locked the keys inside his rented Chevy Blazer. One of the cooks & I were out there in the snow-covered parking lot, helping him break into the vehicle, with a wire hanger.

I think you could have mentioned how Ringo's stage name was a holdover from his days with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes - and that he used to do a little comedy set on some nights with that band, where he told jokes about playing drums and demonstrated little bits and pieces on his kit. Also that he had been tormented as a child by bullies over his real name of Richard Starkey, and named his son Zach in an attempt to give him a bully-proof name.

The first one there, the last one to leave, steady emotionally for the other members and solid behind the kit so the songs could be developed. His style of minimalistic drumming gave way to the over all performance that I personally don't feel would have allowed those songs to breath if your typical "Animal" style drummer would have been behind the kit.

I love how cool and reserved he was. It's interesting that he despised solos, but it seems to make perfect sense considering he always had a healthy, non-impulsive contribution to the Beatles. He knows when to play, just how much and it all comes together beautifully. I find it remarkable because he was comparatively not as appreciated as he should have been, especially when compared to the John, Paul and George.

Can I just say, I'm so glad The HollyHobs started this channel. I love the little facts and tid bits I've either never learned, or forgot about! And the videos are presented so well! Thanks to him and Leah! Great work, you two! (And anyone else working on the videos.)
Ringo's always been my favorite. Say what you want about him, he does well to those who matter: the people he loves (especially after cleaning himself up.)
Celebrities are human beings with lives of their own, and nothing is owed to anyone. Enjoy what's given, don't idolize humans too much, and you won't be let down...we're all people, and no one's perfect.
Also, I LOVED him (and Carlin) as Mr. Conductor XD Totally grew up crushing on him and Levar Burton XD

The few times I spent around Ringo, he always squeezed my bicept and never once did I even consider asking him for an autograph or sign anything. This was mid to late 70's, Laurel Canyon days, before the fire. My dad worked with the Beatles at both Capital and Apple and he remains friends with him to this day...

Perhaps my favorite Ringo moment in cinema, (even though it wasn't him) was in the opening of Yellow Submarine, when he's walking down the streets of the English working class city with nothing to do, and he mutters, "Nothing ever happens to me..." and then all of a sudden there's this yellow submarine following him around, and the periscope tracking him, and then the adventure begins!

I've heard that the lyrics to "With a little help from my friends" began with a line that sort of went "What would you do if I sang out of tune, would you throw (something like vegetables--I can't remember) at me?" but he wouldn't sing those lyrics, which is understandable. I'm glad that they changed it to "would you stand up and walk out on me?"

I've come to regard Ringo Starr as my favorite of the four Beatles. He's the most real, the most "down to earth", and the most accessible... He's never let being the drummer in the greatest band ever go to his head... he seems to honestly feel he was blessed with the role and has always been a very genuine human being, and I think he has a good and giving heart, and a genuine love of life... and -- he seems immortal... because he's almost 80 and looks much like he did 20 or 30 birthdays ago...
He's a great guy and The Beatles made a great and fortuitous move in putting him and his drum kit in their band.... he is the heartbeat of their music, and although he neither composed nor sang that much... he was an essential part of what The Beatles were... and he always will be... I am so glad that he and Paul are still with us and still making music as only they can...

Another couple of interesting things, Ringo’s hair was greying even before the Beatles in his late teens. Also a fact I personally know, is he wasn’t the first person too by asked too do the voices for Thomas the tank engine. It was actually a good friend of mine, called Christopher Hughes who had won the on BBC’s Mastermind back in 1983. He just didn’t have any interest in doing a kids show. I did manage to get, Ringo’s autograph in 2007, just weeks before he stopped signing.

I play a number of instruments (to one degree or another skill level), including drums. I would often sit in with the "insta-bands" that would form at various open mikes/jam sessions I attended. I would always tell the leader of said bands, "Don't pass me any solos." I never wanted to be the Neil Peart sort (look at me, look at me!), I wanted to just play what the song needed. like Ringo. not to throw any shade on John or Paul, but Ringo has always been my favorite Beatle, with George coming in a close second. George is, after all, sort of a patron saint amongst us ukulele phreaks.
