    There are fanboys for both methods of filtration but as long as they are set up properly each one can be great and achieve the full nitrogen cycle. The days of canisters being a 'nitrate factory' are behind us and as long as the filter is suitably sized for the tank there's no reason why they can't provide full cycle filtration (when set up properly with suitable media).
    Well done on explaining the need for anaerobic bacteria - most people either don't understand that or leave that information out completely. It is essential for a natural removal of nitrate (to complete the cycle)
    Nice video and great editing too. I don't have the time to edit like that, lol
    Best wishes for 2017, man.

      I agree both are great. the inky reason I use canisters is bc there more compact as I still live at home and have tanks in my room so I need to save on space

    • @DeepikaAditya
      @DeepikaAditya 6 лет назад +3

      Nicely explained without being biased. Regarding cleaning the cannister filter, I feel if we use an external pre filter as mechanical filter we can easily clean it often without opening up the main cannister for a longer duration and not disturbing the bacteria colonies. Would have loved to try a sump but don't have space for sump.

    • @captainwin6333
      @captainwin6333 6 лет назад +1

      True. The nice bonus with a sump for an aquarium is the extra water capacity and hiding all your equpiment in it, assuming you have the space under your tank but a properly set up external cannister of the correct size, with the right media in the correct order will sort nitrates as well as ammonia and nitrites.

      I think one of the key benifits of having a sump other than hiding all the stuff (heaters, skimmers, etc..) is that you can use it to grow macro algae or keep things like star fish or other “extras” that you might not want in your display tank/reef. This could benefit nitrate removal like that with the algae, or food for harlequin shrimp such as star fish. It really does expand what you could do, and honestly you could still run a canister with a sump. Why not?

    Ive never heard anyone say to maintain your canister filter once a week. I do quarterly cleanings and have for a long time and have had a very healthy tank.

    • @stevemcallister4796
      @stevemcallister4796 7 лет назад +26

      Agree 100%, in my experience if you need to clean your canister filter once a week, something is WAY out of whack in your tank. Overcrowded, no plants, etc.. I have a well, but not heavily planted, tank and I do the same as you do .. quarterly cleanings of the filter. I check my nitrate levels quite regularly and they are at or barely above zero each time. I think folks get a little carried away with theories on cleaning filters, water changes, etc.. I think it could scare folks away from keeping a tank if they are considering it.

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  7 лет назад +5

      +Steve McAllister That also depends on the type of tank you keep. What type is yours?

    • @stevemcallister4796
      @stevemcallister4796 7 лет назад +5

      Ah, true enough I suppose. Mine is a freshwater tank. I did kind of take the advice in the video on filters vs sump as general though, i.e. not specific to a reef tank. If you are strictly talking reef tank filter maintenance than I've no experience with that..

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  7 лет назад +18

      +Steve McAllister Obviously if you are running a planted system for example, it wouldn't need to be done as often as a heavily stocked Cichlid tank or a reef, due to the plants consuming the Nitrates. I just gave the bast case senario, as it would have taken a lot of time to break it down to individual tank types.

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 7 лет назад +12

      Question Everything cleaning of the canister is not to be done often. This is way wrong. You simply do a basic water exchange once a week or every two weeks. If you are opening and constantly cleaning your canister you are taking away the very purpose of it to control ammonia and promote bacterial growth.

    Biggest benefit of a sump is the extended volume of water in addition to the aquarium size. Helps keep the water quality more stable (less drastic fluctuations). A canister is basically a halfway step (happy medium) between a HOB and a sump.
    Also, a sump when the power is goes out = siphoning water from the tank and onto your floor if you don't set it up properly!

    Thank you for your nice work and nice RUclips channel ! I would like to highlight some of the sump benefits in the reef aquarium.- 1)Increase overall water system volume,2) Hiding equipment (heaters , ATOs, dosing pumps ) 3) mechanical/ biological filtration 4) refugium (helping with denitrifcation and PH stabilization),5) the option to include a skimmer and apply methods such as Triton. Overall , sump is a superior filtration for a reef aquarium . For the beginners, I agree that a canister filter will work . However, i will use it only for a fish and soft coral tank in combination with frequent water changes and cleaning. I am interested to check your choices for animals and corals in your new aquarium build.

    great video.
    I have both sump & canister filter on my 70gal reef best thing I done was buy the canister.
    The canister has a built in uv with a canister booster and polishes my water really well.
    I clean the canister every two weeks, the sump gets a 10% water change every two weeks with a big clean out every 6 months.
    The tank gets a 10% water change every two weeks (10% weekly water change alternating where I take the water from), as soon as my nitrates are high then I perform 20/30% water change.
    So if it's possible to have both then I would recommend having both sump & canister

      @@artemgrayson2243 hi there, I'm a newbie as well, but have done lots of research. With his sump, he's saying that the first part of his sump that the water reaches (when coming down from the tank above) is used for the mechanical filtration (so, he might have some sponges or sponge-like material there to let the water through while catching/trapping physical matter such as debris, fishwaste, uneaten food, any particles in the water). And, at the end of his sump, he is using biological filtration (by employing biomedia, things that can easily enable the beneficial bacteria to grow onto, bacteria that will help keep controle over the ammonia and nitrites levels by eating both ammonia and nitriates). Some people add chemical filtration (since sump filters are quite customizable) by adding medications or other water treating products in one of their sump chambers.
      I just bought my very first fishtank yesterday, a huge one that came with a 37 gallons sump. I can't wait to start customizing it =). I know for sure that I will love having a sump chamber for beneficial plants that will help control my ammonia or nitrates levels (put this kind of filtration under the biological side, as it is natural).

    Aaron, I'm hooking up a fresh water rack system with a meter long sump connect to 4 tanks. The pump I've got has a flow rate of 16,000 liters per hour and returns for the tanks will be spray bars. I will also have valves to control the flow to the four tanks. I was wondering how many overflow holes I should have to handle the higher flows. Would 2, 3cm in each tank be enough on each side of the tank, with the spray going down across the whole tank? Or should I add a couple more outlets to compensate when I turn the flow down in the others then that water can just return to the sump without actually going to a tank. I'm scared that I will blow the pipes if I turn down the flow to any of the tanks.

      Reid Smith I'll say it... I hate sumps. I've had tanks from 1 to 325 gallons, and everything in between... in 32 years of keeping, and raising anything that will fit in a fishtank. And I've yet to find an advantage to a sump...
      On the other hand... my canister filters are more efficient, quieter, easier to clean, cheaper to set up, easier to set up, and, I don't loose huge amounts of water to evaporation. Any add-ons I may need can still be used, just inline, from heaters to reactors... just a matter of some plumbing to the water lines... and still hid from inside the tank.
      I currently have a 125, with 2 Fluval 406s... I actually had to 'unsump' this tank... and its never going back.
      Your milage may very.

    Hi Aaron. Thanks for your vids helped me loads.
    I currently have 125litre tank. And i was planning to run a canister..
    Will a internal or HOB Protein Skimmer help with the potential raise of nitrates.?
    And when cleaning the canister. Do i need to clean the ceramic biomax media or leave it be??
    Thanks.

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  7 лет назад +2

      +Stewart Bumstead A skimmer will help remove waste before it has chance to break down thus reducing Nitrates. Don't clean the bio max as this my kill the bacteria needed for the Nitrogen Cycle.

    Subbed....well done mate, from St. Augustine fl....."St.Auggy" (born n raised in Bournemouth)
    Very informative, just getting into African peacok cichlids from many years of salt ....
    Do you have any info on keeping down aggression with these fish?
    I'm running a 100gallon long with a sump......with five 2" juveniles and a 4" o.b.....also have two catfish and a South American golden severum......(who all pretty much stay clear of trouble)
    But my peacoks are CONSTANTLY CHASING and and attempting dominance and territory......some say problem is because perhaps one of my juvys could be a female.....or even that I simply don't have enough peacoks in the tank yet......any thoughts?
    Water parameters are awesome and temp set for 80degrees
    Anyway cheers man, keep it up.....good info

    Also you can make your own canister filter with a bucket from home depot and to cheap pumps to suck water out and return i did that for one of my tanks and it works so much better then a 200 dollar canister filter at Petco and I only spend like 30 bucks on everything for a lrg size bucket

    Great Video! Finally, someone put an end to the constant battle between sump and canister. 😊 With a sump you can build it as big as you want. But I am not into DIY things. So I just keep 2 Fx6 on my bigger tanks.

    Always excellent information. Ive been following your channel for quite some time now, I like all the videos you put out, however the audio is always not as loud as it should be. Your intro, graphics and contents are excellent, now if the audio is clear and leveled with the intro, it would make your channel much more bad ass. Please take this as constructive criticism, Im just advising you from a viewer point if view.

    Sump filter filter water more clearer but I'm feels lazy to do that option at my aquarium.
    Canister is also tedious, but not as tedious as the sump filter.
    So, my personal preference that suits on me is the top filter.
    It's quite efficient for 3 - 4 feet of the aquarium.
    Much easier to maintain & cost effective.

    Use it as a reactor as a add on to your sump mega cheap as small one or cheaper if you second hand

  • @blkhemi3925

    What if you ran 2 canister filters, and a sump tank?
    Overflow gravity feeds into a sump tank, then suck out from the sump tank useing canister filters, and into the fish tank.

    • @James-ye7rp
      @James-ye7rp 3 года назад

      I don't think that would work very well. Canister filters have very weak pumps that are not designed to push against any real head of water; note that canister filters have an equal amount of water at input as return. If you pull water from the sump, usually about 4-5 feet below where you would put the return, your pump would be VERY ineffective. You could use the canister filter as part of the sump, but use a larger return pump to go back to the display.

    I'm planning to do a saltwater aquarium in the future that is fish only (no corals), but the equipment cost and the required maintenance always pushes me away ex.(sump, overflow, return, skimmer, RO units and reactors).
    Can I do well with a canister and aged tap water for a fish only system?
    I really want to get into marine but the costs are prohibitive for me.

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  7 лет назад +1

      +Richard James Canister yes. I'd never suggest using tap water it's not worth the risk when marine fish are so expensive

    A sump would be awesome for refugium And hiding equipment, but a canister filter also goves you more water volume without the worry of flooding your house
