Overhand Serve For Beach Volleyball Beginners

  • A lot of beginner beach volleyball players resort to underhand serving simply because they do not yet know how to overhand serve over the net consistently. In this video I go over 4 simple tips that tend to help players to get a consistent overhand serve. Over time, these basics can then be advanced further into powerful float serves as well as topspin serves.
    ----------------------------------
    For people that need more than these 4 tips to learn a consistent overhand serve:
    Usually the people that do not find the power to overhand serve the ball over the net, aren't finding the way to get power from your core to the ball. The one cue about the core that I talked about in the video helps enough for some players to make this connection, while some players unfortunately need even more guidance on how to find this. I have planned to make more videos about this in the future, but until they are done, here are two routes you can go to continue your discovery journey:
    First watch this one minute video about the "torque serve" ( • USAV Skill Video Torqu... ). Notice that this is basically an underhand serve where the angle is more to the side rather than straight down. This type of serve often makes it more intutive for players to get power from their core rather than their shoulder, you want to "catapult your arm" into the ball with the help of your body, rather than "push your arm" into the ball with the help of your shoulder muscles. Go watch the above video again, notice that the girl with the headband gets more power to the ball than the other girl, and she is "torqueing" her upper body to create momentum into the arm rather than keeping the body still and swinging the arm with the shoulder like the other girl. You want to do it like the girl with the white headband. Once you have found the way to do it like the girl in the white head band, you can slowly start doing the serve "higher and higher" until you basically in the end end up doing and overhand serve. So just as we could find a lot of techniques "in between" the underhand serve and how the torque serve is done in this video, we can similarly find techniques in between the torque serve and an overhand serve, meaning in the end we can serve with the arm in all positions in a 180 degree "half circle" - all the way from underhand serving, to torque serving, to overhand serving.
    Hope this helps. If it doesn't, and you are desperate for answers, the second option I can provide is of course coaching. You can find more info about that at www.learnbeachvolleyballfast.com/coaching Or you can of course always wait until I one day make more videos on this topic! :)

    This (4:50) is a really interesting and valuable information!!
    Even large channels like Better at Beach do not really say this in their overhead serve videos.

      Thanks! :)
      There's many reasons I started my own channel, but one of them was that nobody (even the supposedly good coaches) was teaching the stuff I desperately needed to learn, so once I figured things out I thought others might have value out of it too..!

      @@LearnBeachVolleyballFast Somethimes we need to scratch bits of information together from many sources to get a good picture. Without RUclips and all the sources it would be very hard to learn Beach Volleyball -- even here in a large city like Berlin. Good coaches are difficult to find! They are rare.

      @@cirrus2013 Yess I agree, accurate information is super rare..
      I actually have been considering if I should live in Berlin for a summer to try it out, I hear there is a great demand for coaches and I have always had an interest for living in Germany for a few months to upgrade my school-German to maybe something that would be functional in day to day conversations..! Do you have any thoughts of what the best ways to come there for volleyball would be? :)

    I love the "high five" tip. It helps the person to get a feeling of what she's supposed to feel during the serve, while also showing where the toss should be. Core strenght it's an aspect that is easily overlooked when we start learning and don't get why the arms feel like wet noodles against the ball instead of crushing it.

      Absolutely! Hahah like the analogy of "arms feeling like wet noodles against the ball!" 😅

    @5:31 Great tip! I'm just getting back to beach after having shoulder surgery six months ago and I want to slowly get back to overhand serves. I never even thought about using a fist but it makes sense now that I think about it.

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
      @LearnBeachVolleyballFast  Год назад

      Yess! There's a bit more "mass" to the fist so it requires a bit less power. Hope the shoulder will recover well!

    Always, thank you for your great videos. "tricky" is the key word. I've been playing volleyball consistently for 4 yrs using underhand serve because I couldn't get it over the net with overhand. Just recently, I started using overhand serve and it's been going over but mostly short and close to the net. Everyone around me makes overhand look so easy and with power. It's really frustrating. before I heard you mention fist as an option, I've been using it to get more power but it's too loopy. I think it may be the throw or how I hit the ball. My playmates advise that I'm pushing it rather than hitting it. I really want to get better at overhand serve. I will take your advise about the core when I serve.

      Sounds like you haven't found your core. Have a look at what I wrote in the description for people that this video isn't enough for regarding the torque serve, and watch the video closely and notice the difference between the girls in the video. Using that strategy of going step by step from an underhand serve towards torque towards overhand might be a good idea for you, in addition to trying the tip regarding the core from this video. It will be a "totally different source of power" for your hits and you will probably feel quite different once you find the feeling.

    Funny, when I first started playing (30+ years ago), I was hitting with my fist. #greatMinds
    Also, good choice on using the AVP balls ^^

      Hahah that's awesome! 😄🧐
      Yeah, regarding the balls I thought the video might become relatable for more people if I have both balls in the video.. Even though we all know that the Mikasa is a better ball right..!? 😉

    What about a right-hander trying to serve overhand with their left hand? I had rotator cuff repair on my right so have been trying for months but my left hand just doesn't seem good enough. It's certainly strong enough, but I struggle with that left-handed serve.

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

      This is super interesting, I did the same while my right shoulder was injured. For me the step (right step for a left hand serve) was the magic pill to start making the ball go over the net at least, but I never tried to develop the serve to become as powerful as my right.
      To be honest I have yet to see someone who has developed their non-dominant hand to be as good/powerful/accurate as the normal hand in an adult age. Many people believe it is impossible, simply not enough neural pathways laid in childhood or something like this. I am a bit more optimistical because I know the body is an absolutely amazing learning machine when we do things right...
      So the times I have worked towards getting my left to become closer to as good as my right, the big secret has been to REALLY pay attention to the smallest of details of how your right side does things, and figuring out when the left side is not doing those small details and then learning to copy them. A big mirror can be a great tool for this kind of work. Second big point is that strength, and maybe moreso mobility can be different between your sides, and therefore influence the ways it is possible to do a movement in the first place. Lack of mobility often forces us to do movements in non-optimal ways. It takes quite a bit of work to assess mobility and strength in "all" of your muscles on both sides, but if I had a gun to my head and had to learn to serve with my left just as well as my right I'd assess as many muscles as I can think of and make the left side just as strong and mobile as the right side... Hope that makes some sense.
      Would be super fun to see video of your left hand serve, and your right hand serve if you have any old video of it. Are you planning to play with your left for life or for a period until right side gets better?

    • @gravesbe
      @gravesbe 2 года назад +1

      @@LearnBeachVolleyballFast I'm now trying to strengthen my right so I can use it, but it's not happening fast enough for me, lol. I have paid a lot of attention to the footwork, and to making sure I throw the ball not too high, and also noticed that the right side of my back gets pretty sore when I practice left-handed. So you're probably right about using all the muscles, that's exactly what I figured it was. It gets better with practice, but still not consistently over the net, and certainly not with any force/speed.

      @@gravesbe Makes sense! Also check your shoulder external rotation between the sides, if you lack mobility there the "whip" of the arm cannot function properly which might lead to a "stiffer body" technique..
      Another thing I'd do is start using my left for like everything in my everyday life. Pick up stuff, brush teeth etc.. Just in terms of gaining general control and brain-muscle connection in the whole limb altogether. Does that make sense?
