this video made me feel much better, i played nationally for indoor volleyball and now play sand volleyball for fun but i was doing very bad and could not understand why i wasn’t doing well. but this makes so much sense, thank you!

I'm watching this as a beach player playing indoor and it helped me a lot thanks :). I'm always jumping too straight up and I can't hit as hard I tried to adjust but it was too much of a habit. I'm definitely gonna try and keep moving forwards when I jump.

Listening to this video, I thought of an interesting comparison.
In football (soccer) people take penalty kicks in two ways:
1. They choose their target early and blast the ball, hoping the goalkeeper can't get there - or
2. They watch where the keeper moves, and gently slide the ball into the other corner
You have similar options in indoor/beach volleyball. But on sand, the percentage shot is usually 2.
I was number 1 when I played. Also always shot high corner. My philosophy was that it was better to shoot over than the keeper saving my shot. Needless to say, I was not the go to penalty kicker for my team...

Honesty, I got into Haikyuu a few years ago because of a friend, and now volleyball is by far my favourite sport, people should really appreciate both Haikyuu and Beach/Indoor volleyball a lot more, they are really great.

I learned this the hard way a few weeks back. I was just getting comfortable hitting hard indoors and then I switched to beach this summer. We still play 6v6 bc it's a bar league so I don't have as much court as I'd like. But I changed my hitting form after looking like the bad example in your guy's video for three games😭😭 Thanks for the tips!
Been playing for the past 10 years and played with someone just the other night that told me I was broad jumping vs vertical jumping. Had no idea I was doing this, then you guys bring this video out! Great timing! And it makes such a difference already with switching it up!

The physics is that when you're broad-jumping you're pushing sand behind you without gaining any upward energy. When vertical-jumping in sand, you're not losing near as much energy pushing sand around.

Physics behind "not jumping as high in sand". For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction", ground force production. Sand, when you push on it, causes the force (energy) to dissipate (get squandered) among the many grains. On a wooden or plastic floor - over top of concrete - the reaction force is more equal to the force being placed on the floor. The same instance happens when you land, the sand dissipates the force on your body, not injuring joints and connective tissue. As Coach K says, be careful going back inside after a summer on the beach, let your body get accustomed to the change in floor slowly. He's right, as it takes time for the body to be able to slow down the landing of the jump on a solid surface, as during the sand landing the sand 'takes the brunt of the force', in indoor, your connective tissue will either accept the force or tear. ;0) Hope that helped? Also on point #2… Theres no mystery on who’s going to attack so the blocker knows who to commit to. 1v1 against a single blocker that’s ready and waiting for you is not an easy kill. 1v1 indoor is a credit to the setter who made the best choice of the least defended attacker and the defense is still forming. Beach, the defense is pretty much always set up.

How long did it take to adjust your timing from indoors to outdoors? That's been my struggle as I continue to play indoors because I like faster sets, to switch it up to higher sets on the beach. I already have a short approach, but it's tougher to sit on a set and wait for it. Looking forward to seeing you guys on the Amazing Race. Mahalo \m/

Do you have any secrets about vision of the court, like do you use your periferal or do you take a look and attack? And when should you take a look?
Main focus is the the ball secondary focus is the court, pay attention to the court/blocker on your approach as well.

I'm an indoor player and I'm playing beach for the first time this Saturday. This video I'd nearly 2 years old. How did they know???
As a smaller player (5'11") I think that being able to be accurate is very important. However with certain shoulder problems accumulated from playing sports, I don't really want to hit the ball anymore anyway. So are there exercises I can do to rehab my shoulder for hitting so I'm no longer terrified of hurting it. At the moment I'm trying to fix my swing and spot more because I would still like that threat.
I have problems in my hitting shoulder as well, which I think is mainly due to prolonged play with poor technique. It might be best to get checked out by a physio to at least clearly know what the problem is.
In my case, due to using a computer almost throughout the day, I have asymmetry/weakness in the rhomboid and rotator cuff muscles on my dominant side. Add to that a poor hitting technique where I don't use my lat and core to hit, but compensate instead with only my shoulder muscles, and I irritate my shoulder joint every time I play.
I do some rotator cuff exercises every other day using a resistance band, and it's helped a lot with reducing the amount of pain. But best start with ascertaining the problem first.
I recommend doing a compound weightlifting exercise, that is military press or overhead press. Also, I recommend using a barbell. When executed with proper form, these exercises strengthen the whole shoulder girdle. Blood flow to the shoulder joint area is increased and metabolic pathways that drive development of protective tissue around the joints are activated. The increase in muscle mass of several shoulder muscle subgroups further protect your joints as they absorb much of the energy arising from hitting the ball during play.

Deception is the reason why I can't stand beach volleyball. I'd rather get smashed in the face than having a guy just touching the ball behind my blocker or pushing the ball in every corner available
