Yeah Pakistani and Afghani use 3 lute strings. But we use 4 in Gurmat Sangeet or Indian classical. We also sing with this Instrument so sometimes we need to go to lower octave then we have to add one more lower octave string in addition to go to lower pace.

From bass string to treble is usually tuned to C# F# B on a three string Rabab. Some add a fourth treble string tuned to E so you get C# F# B E
