tools already exists to monitor children's access to these things ... A. Do not get them a device. B. Install parental control app. C. Educate your children. D. Identify the emotional needs of the child and their individual desires so they do not seek them haphazardly and have boundaries with the world they encounter.
We did not actually need a law.

Free wifi is easily obtained in public places, and the western landscape is littered with used devices. Its not necessary for a child to obtain a usable smartphone from a parent. They can obtain one from a friend or at a flea market or pawn shop, ot just find them laying around. I regularly see them by the side of the road. And then they keep them privately, away from mom and dad.

I PROTECT WHAT'S MINE TO THE DEATH because they're not able to protect themselves mentally or physically from idiots that prey on kids that are allowed PRIVACY that secretly go on certain apps only to be manipulated to do things they wouldn't normally do then finding themselves in a position THAT I WILL NEVER ALLOW MY KIDS TO BE IN!!!
My kids belong to me, making them MY PROPERTY!!
PRIVACY is earned and that doesn't start at 12 or 13 years old!!
That's for parents that want to be FRIENDS with their kids instead of BEING THE PARENTS that teach, protect, love and DISCIPLINE when they do wrong!! My kids are RESPECTFUL, POLITE, HAPPY AND HEALTHY!! ARE YOURS?? DOUBTFUL!!

No human is property, well you will find out at 18. i warned you to be a healthier parent because authoritarian parenting doesn't allow kids to feel safe to come and talk to you when there is trouble, it causes a higher risk for aggression, depression, anxiety, addiction, and if spanking is involved higher risk for mental illness. anger issues, chronic illness, high blood pressure, lower life expectancy. It also in some cases leads to estrangement once kids are old enough to realize they deserve to be treated with respect and are allowed to have boundaries. There have been various studies done in the last 20 years that show all of this.
Authoritative parenting is a lot healthier and in treating your child like a human being they are able to learn how to regulate their emotions not just stuff them down so you don't get mad at them for "showing attitude or talking back" which is usually not attitude or talking just normal kids trying to voice their own opinions calmly. Please take a look at authoritative parenting your kids deserve to be treated like the good human beings they are @@FATBOY2126

How is this overreach? he is simply trying to put laws into place for social media protection for minors. do you not want kids to be safe from predators, bullying, hate, suicide, and pornography? once they are of age they can watch stuff if they want. but its about teaching and protecting minors from the harms of social media and seeing things online that they shouldn't be seeing. no overreach here and they still have freedom of speech.

They keep saying addiction it's not addiction, i have a degree in psychology. Social media is how kids socialize nowadays malls are dead there is nothing in them, there are no arcades, parks are dangerous and if kids congregate elsewhere they are kicked out for loitering so social media is their outlet especially kids who are abused at home or kids who are "different" for whatever reason (mental illness, chronic illness, etc.) they find community and friendship online. Also most of the time kids are socializing with their real life school friends, no one calls anymore because it's seen as awkward and unnecessary gamers use it to play together and there is a real tangible feeling of socialization. Are there bad things about social media of course but that's where parents need to have discussions about online safety, check in about feelings and nurture a sense of confidence/autonomy and by teen years not dependence on someone else to regulate their emotions or activities. Is there trafficking yes but again that is why you need to have discussions with your child about the warning signs and what is really out there and how they target children kids are smarter than you give them credit for they are humans with thoughts feelings needs and opinions just like you. This is definitely government overreach and they are using scare mongering to make you feel like it's a good idea. Did you know that too much social media for adults has the same outcomes and adults also get trafficked and more adults than kids are scammed online if this gets passed through the courts then there is precedence for them to ban social media for you and that means stopping the freedom to share news, thoughts, opinions with others. To say this is a slippery slope is to put it lightly.

    • @michaelgroux839
      @michaelgroux839 Месяц назад +1

You start off by mentioning your degree in psychology, which seems like an attempt to establish your credibility. While your background is important, it's the substance of your argument that really counts. You make some sweeping statements about social media being the primary outlet for kids nowadays, dismissing other forms of socialization like going to malls or parks. your arguments suggests that regulating social media for children could lead to broader censorship or restrictions on adult use, without providing sufficient evidence or reasoning to support this claim. I hear your concerns about potential government overreach and censorship, as well as the importance of social media for kids' socialization. However, we can't ignore the growing body of evidence highlighting the serious risks associated with excessive social media use among children. While social media can indeed provide a sense of community and support for kids facing challenges like abuse or feeling different, we can't turn a blind eye to the very real dangers lurking online. Studies have consistently shown the detrimental effects of excessive social media use on mental health, including increased rates of anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation among young users. Furthermore, your argument seems to downplay the unique vulnerabilities of children in the online space. Unlike adults, children may lack the maturity and critical thinking skills to navigate the complex landscape of social media safely. They are more susceptible to cyberbullying, online predators, and exposure to inappropriate content. Regulating social media for children doesn't have to mean stifling their freedom or censoring their interactions. Instead, it's about implementing age-appropriate safeguards and educational initiatives to help kids make informed choices online. Just as we teach children how to cross the street safely or avoid talking to strangers in the physical world, we need to equip them with the tools to protect themselves in the digital realm. Moreover, by addressing the risks associated with social media early on, we can empower kids to develop healthier online habits and cultivate a more positive relationship with technology. This isn't about fear-mongering or restricting their access-it's about ensuring that they can enjoy the benefits of social media while minimizing the potential harm. while social media can be a valuable tool for communication and connection, we must prioritize the safety and well-being of our children. By implementing sensible regulations and promoting digital literacy, we can create a safer online environment where kids can thrive without sacrificing their freedom or autonomy.

@@michaelgroux839 I bring up my degree so that a reader might understand that I have studied emotional & behavioral development from embryo to death at old age and so am not just talking out my butt.
I didn't dismiss other ways to socialize i brought up malls and parks etc. "malls are dead there is nothing in them, there are no arcades, parks are dangerous and if kids congregate elsewhere they are kicked out for loitering " that's not dismissing that's just the truth of the matter unfortunately especially after covid. I do agree we need to address the potential harm i see the studies but how can we do that if kids have no interaction with social media so we can have these discussions with them.
"This isn't about fear-mongering or restricting their access-it's about ensuring that they can enjoy the benefits of social media while minimizing the potential harm." you say this isn't about fear mongering but i haven't heard a single thing in any of these speeches about mental health or getting your child a therapist if you think they have been affected all i keep hearing is "what about the children did you know there are child predators out there?" and it definitely is about restricting access this bill would make it illegal for kids to go on social media even if that means apps made for them like youtube kids, or kids messenger etc.
" Regulating social media for children doesn't have to mean stifling their freedom or censoring their interactions. Instead, it's about implementing age-appropriate safeguards and educational initiatives to help kids make informed choices online." but will that actually happen? the educational initiatives and i still think it's up to parents to place safeguards they feel is appropriate. I agree things should be age appropriate but again these are discussions to be had with their parents all children are not the same development wise. This is stifling the freedom of kids to reach out for help, this is stifling the freedom and censoring what children can learn that is actually beneficial to them that can help them in the future technology is here to stay and coding is a part of a lot of jobs even in a basic way learning technology skills is extremely important and i have concern that this ban will hurt that possibility of kids to learn about wonderful topics that they either don't teach in schools or can't teach in schools like history or science. Most of all i worry about what will happen when after all this fear mongering parents will say oh no social media till you leave my house and boom they are susceptible to all sorts of stuff that they aren't prepared for because instead of teaching them along the way as they grew up they were forced to stay off social media their entire adolescent life.
Also if you were worried about cyberbullying just wait till you have the kids whose parents will allow them on their accounts vs. the kids not allowed on social media see who is bullied then. It happend before with clothes, shoes, back in late 90's with the internet. speaking of which I have been on the internet since netscape dial up days as a child myself and there were just as many creeps and even more crazy things to see online for all to see. My father sat me down and told me the dangers out there and explained what to watch out for while checking in on how I was doing emotionally and if I had any questions about anything online weekly. An open and clear communication type relationship with your child is really what's needed not government overreach. As far as the slippery slope argument I made well look at texas they basically outlawed porn sites (no government should need you to show an ID before allowing you on websites) again more censorship for adults based on the argument "oh what about the children!". No this is just too much and I truly hope that desantis leaves office soon along with that texas governor.
Republicans always spouting about freedom but yet they are the ones that keep outlawing things and banning things that's not freedom at all.

This bill is nothing but theater. Does anyone really think this is going to do anything? Even if you agree with the premise that kids shouldn't have these accounts (which is separate from my point here), how on earth is anyone going to enforce this? For the adults reading this.... whom do you call to fix your computer, your phone, your router, your printer, your (pick any electronic device)? It's your kids because they know how these work and how to manipulate them. No matter how many rules you put on these accounts, kids will open them w/o their parents knowing or getting their permission. Furthermore, how is this going to be monitored? All a kid has to do is say they are 16 (or whatever age doesn't require permission). Kids don't have driver's licenses with pic and DOB to verify. They don't have credit cards, etc. So, like the bathroom bills, just how are these going to be enforced? These types of laws are nothing but theater to show you "did" something even if we all know it won't work. More wasted money and time. On top of that, this is a Florida-only law. All a kid has to do is fool the platform they're from another state. So easily bypassed.

I was just trying to point out that so often republican legislators stomp on personal liberty in the name of purported conservative principles and you can even see in the comment section here how many laud it. Depriving people of liberty in the name of security runs antithetical to libertarian values.

I have witnessed social media being an outlet for young people to escape some of the most dull ... uninspiring parents and families. When so many people are dullards - unconscious ... why would you not want to give a child every means to escape? What do you say to the children you are now harming?

    • @anitacrumbly

exactly so many kids from abusive households use social media as a means of escape the harm they are also isolating kids who are looking for community when they feel alone in mental illness, chronic illness, being "different" in any way. This is all just stupidity.
