Graduated Columbia 2004. My classmates included someone from almost every country and religion you could think of. I was so blessed to have so many diverse friends. Yes my Croat friend despised my Serb friend. My Jewish friend was convinced our German professor was discriminating against him. My Muslim friend almost got into a fist fight at a bar with an off duty NYPD officer who was a first responder. My car got broken into on riverside drive. But we all felt safe walking around campus. That was an extremely safe place surrounded by crime. This “protest” was total bullshit and you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Do professors no longer teach what civil disobedience means? I think of the civil rights movement and the sit- ins at lunch counters. Brave students publicly breaking an unjust law, bearing the wrath and violence of racist opponents.
In past eras, our students accepted the consequences of their actions gracefully. Their grace sent a meaningful message of peaceful resistance. They did not hide their faces in fear. In shame.
    Today, I see students
assert: we are fearless, we camp, on plush, manicured lawns. No statement, no purpose, no need to spend the night. No all-night silent vigil. Our sacrifice is sleeping, safe and sound in a free land.
They resist arrest- for camping without a permit, wielding large slabs of wood in escalation, crying oppression and police brutality. I’m a student! I’m a faculty member! Confident of their privilege above just law.
Today, I see students intimidate, bully, block minority students from entering their campus.
A perverted echo of the civil rights movement.
I’m haunted by an image of students laughing and jeering at Black officers of the NYPD. Accusing them of being the Kay-Kay-Kay. How cool-headed those officers, solemn with the weight of those deadly letters.
Must our college students now be trained when and how to speak? Have they exhausted the limits of their free speech? Chanting, too easy for scholars, as easy as hate.
It is not beyond the reach of young scholars today to wish peace and human rights for humanity - Palestinian infants, Israeli toddlers, American baby sisters and brothers.
Who taught these young minds to think in black and white only, wholly pure or wholly evil, discerning nothing between? With a solemn pledge of allegiance to diversity, equality, and most of all, inclusion - speak now in peace.
May they grow up. May they take off their masks. May they recognize the noble, imperfectly human, American history of their own beloved Holy Land.

Several countries have laws or regulations that restrict or penalize conversion from Islam to other religions, including:
    1. Saudi Arabia: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    2. Afghanistan: Conversion from Islam is considered apostasy, punishable by death or imprisonment.
    3. Pakistan: Blasphemy laws, while not specifically targeting conversion, can lead to accusations and violence against those leaving Islam.
    4. Somalia: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by death.
    5. Yemen: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    6. Brunei: Sharia law, introduced in 2014, prescribes death by stoning for apostasy.
    7. Sudan: Conversion from Islam is punishable by death.
    8. Mauritania: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    9. Qatar: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by imprisonment.
    10. United Arab Emirates: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by imprisonment.
    11. Malaysia: While not strictly illegal, conversion from Islam is heavily restricted and can lead to state-sanctioned rehabilitation programs.
    12. Egypt: While not illegal, conversion from Islam can lead to social ostracism, family rejection, and legal challenges.
Please note that laws and regulations can change, and enforcement may vary. Additionally, social and cultural attitudes toward conversion can be just as influential as legal frameworks. This list is not exhaustive, and other countries may have similar laws or restrictions.

Like she says, there is no consensus among faculty. She is speaking from her own bias, seeing and interpreting with her particular lens. I hope there is historical data collecting to analyze later all the varied narratives, eyewitness testimonies and actual harms recorded. She is idealistic about community building, which can be an oxymoron. At some point the dominant voices will not tolerate varied thought, actions or reactions. Human nature en masse, can't tolerant a status quo of variety. Eventually the domination by numbers of adherents to accomplish certain aims as "community" will be the damnation of any naysayers. Idealism and religiosity are the worst. Look at California. They are making too much idealistic legislation without accounting for costs and consequences. They burden the very people who can advice on what is at stake. Idealism does not account for evil, powermongers, users and abusers. Some of the laws now expect the average citizens and business people to shoulder the costs of crime and destruction by those who are not held accountable or required to make restitution. We need more pragmatism in leadership, self determination as individuals. Legislating idealism as morality is an impossibility.
