I am so grateful for this interview. The backstory of the documentary deepens my understanding of the film. Joan Baez is iconic and has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. I appreciate her honesty and hope that viewers in need of resolution of childhood trauma or molestation.
My reaction, exactly! That truly touched me deeply ... I love when people are willing to not hide behind a mask of "maturity" or "seriousness". Authentic reactions ... what a concept!
I'm 76, and as a member of the Boomer generation I can tell you that Joan Baez life, music and activism was part of our young, tumultuous history. I find inspiration in her life still today.
HYPOCRISY! Now, they should be seasoned and wise....but not much to say about genocide in Gaza. What Hoan has said is truly disappointing, and obviously, she's a Zionist. All the shine has come off everything, I believed. They have given no support to the students of this generation. Shame on them. They are no Susan Sarandon.
Joan came to my school in 1955 or 1956. I was 16 and she must have been 14. She sang for an assembly and I thought, hmm if she can do it, so can I, but I didn't play an instrument. I was often a soloist in the acapella choir at my school. I didn't own a guitar & it took me a couple of years to get one. I've been performing, teaching, and being an activist since 1957. But not all of us get famous and I didn't. I admire Joan and I admire Jane. Joan is multi talented. Jane has always stood strong in the face of adversity. I can't wait to see Joan's doc. Her mother was quite a gal to save everything. Joan's sister, Mimi was quite a singer and quite an activist as well. She passed of cancer a few years back, but has some lovely CD's with her dead husband. Richard and Mimi Farina. Joan came into a gallery I was an artisan in in Palo Alto. There were a couple of young people and they didn't know who she was. But they acknowledged that she had amazing charisma and wanted to know who she was. She was trying on hand made masks for the black and white ball in SF. Her mom was with her and looked like a typical older lady in tennis shoes. This was years ago. btw: I'm still singing, and still teaching my singing groups. I'm 84 and I still have my voice.
Jane came so prepared with really right-on questions, and looking how nervous she felt that night, possibly because of their particular mutual history and revealed admiration on that program. It gives another dimension to the ultra-confession climate of this safe space....
It’s good to know that in the end she broke through. I wasn’t sure watching her doc if she was going to get there but she did and no one deserves it more than. We loved having you here at our Tanglewood . I will always treasure it❤. 1
Joan, drawing upside down you are activating the right side of your brain, unlocking the emotional and creative energy there. BTW saw you sing in the mid 70's as a college student at UVM in Vermont. You were touring with Dylan in the "Rolling Thunder Review". Been a fan ever since. You ROCK!.....still.
I remember reading Joan's autobiography "And a voice to sing with" when I was seventeen years old. Without ever grasping the depth of its meaning, I could so relate to her mentioning her "demons". This woman is so strong. "Denial is your friend". That is also the driving force in my life. I have learned so much from this woman. The inspiration I got from Joan Baez has enhanced my life in a way I never thought would have been possible. I am so happy she is enjoying her life.
Wonderfully honest documentary. Thank you so for letting us in. Many can so relate to a journey of getting mostly whole through decades of 'stuff and work. Appreciatively 🇨🇦 🍁!
Love this, my husband passed 2-22-2024, he used to draw for his patients upside down, he was a surgeon. It always amazed me and the patient.. this is so great. Thank you I finally figured it out after he passed 7 months and 7 days.. he is Jewish ( writing is right to left, )the pictures were amazing of anatomy . Will any of the collection of Joan's items be given to the Folk Music Hall of Fame? She should have her own museum! We have a Steinbeck museum in Salinas, CA - so why not a Joan Baez museum -she has far more breadth and depth of material!

I always greatly admired Joan Baez for the gifts she gave to the world, her sincerity and her talents. She moves these days like she is 10 years younger than her actual age. It’s great to see. It’s also great that she doesn’t feel she needs to change the world, just contribute to it. I disagree with her about how her parents were spared. I respect that she stays in her own lane when it comes to healing, no one can make others tell the truth or heal. However she is wrong about her parents somehow being fortunate because they had complete amnesia as to her father’s sexual molestation of her and her sister. We don’t get lucky by avoiding accountability, truth, and healing with one another because in doing so we become better versions of ourselves - and most importantly as a result put compassion first for our own children. Joan has a blind spot about this. It’s as if she wants to give them one final gift, diamonds but without the rust. Regret and pain for what we’ve done must consume us for a time, that IS what makes the journey worth it. May peace one day reign supreme because we’ve done the hard parts.
I am sorry but this film didn’t seem to show that the source of the pain in their family was because of sexual abuse by their father, and that that was the ‘dark truth’ no one could face. Perhaps I need to watch it again, but that seemed very glossed over, except for Mimi’s specific memory. The whole part about discovering multiple personalities was really just touched on too. I liked a lot of the film, but with my own unresolved issues I guess I was expecting or hoping for more. Too many California hugs and then the sage burning! I tried that 30 years ago, it didn’t help much, because no matter how many years I have lived here, or how much I like sage, or how much I respect native culture, it is cultural appropriation and skin deep. Likewise singing about “Before I’ll be a slave, I’ll be buried in my grave”? To me that was cringe. She does have a nice sense of humor though, and has done much for many good causes, so who am I to criticize?
I guess Pat was grace and Joan was Frankie. I would just like to hear my mom say she loves me and she is sorry. And stand up to her troll girls that have hurt me. I need my mom. Maybe has never felt that from me but this is her time last chance to be there for me personally show she loves me and not Celebes. Her little person that is so much like her
Let's invite everybody enjoy Christmas gifts, vintage movies and music as well, so energizing after so many years, get in action and have fun working on the next movie project, Lady Joan Baez is invited to work on the movie soundtrack Ok? Everybody knows, for Christmas we celebrate the Jesus Christ's birthday, what about getting focused on baby Jesus? You know, that precise age of three years old when kids start to understand words and put questions such as ....why birds can fly without falling down? Why trees can not grow so high to another universe in space? Do they stars come down to earth to die? God looks like a giant poultry that need to seek for answers, what if killer viruses come from space and ...infect powerful men like Putin making him lose his minds and become such a terrible anti human cannibal...what kind of man is that one who hates us all to death? Have fun guys working on.. FAITH, what people do not want to believe because..they have lost any trust in human nature...time to get it back guys, if we reached this point, time to get back the FAITH lost🎉❤🎉

Courageous my ass. They made their money. Where are they now in supporting the students of this generation about Gaza. Hypocrisy. Priviledged lives make courage a lot easier. I wouldn't waste the dime or the time on either one.
Still, she says she wants to be on the college campuses where Gaza protests have been recently occurring. “I'm sympathetic with all that. And I think: Well, wait a minute, I can't do that, I'm not a student. I don't even know if I would be welcome. So I'm itching to be there and knowing that at the moment, it's not where I need to be, for a lot of reasons.” She continues, “I think sometimes coming onto the campus when you’re [an] ‘outside agitator’ does more damage to them than good. I think with their ardent support of themselves as students, and that it is their campus, and that they have a right to be doing what they're doing on their campus, I think that probably needs to be respected.” Baez says these student protestors are brave, but she wishes they had been trained in nonviolence. “And if they were organized, [Martin Luther] King would have organized them, you don't let the police get the better of you by you shouting at them. That's all I can say.”
@kas_xo Yrs catch the last paragraph. Demonstrators HAVE been non-violent. Those are the words of a brainwashed ZIONIST. What she is saying is propaganda. It's just not a true reflection. Her compliication is that she supports Zionism, which is contrary to all she stood for in her time. It's just that Israel has different rules in her world. She is a hypocrite. She is playing with words and making excuses so that she does not out her hypocracy. So that she does not ruin her legacy. It's clear as day. And her lying about it makes her even more shameful. I am very disappointed and have lost all respect for her. $$$
Jane worked very hard to stop the Vietnam War. She made mistakes, don't we all? I lost my 18 year old brother in 1968 in Vietnam. I wish the efforts of these beautiful women had reached those in power. I love both Jane and Joan.

How honest and adorable to see Jane Fonda "fan-girling" over Joan in the sweet, nervous way that a true fan shows to one's idol and inspiration.
My reaction, exactly! That truly touched me deeply ... I love when people are willing to not hide behind a mask of "maturity" or "seriousness". Authentic reactions ... what a concept!

Before I watch this, does anyone know how these two women stand on the issue of Palestine?
Feels like that 1979 question was very pointedly (and inappropriately) aimed at creating an uncomfortable situation between Jane and Joan.
