Lexapro (Escitalopram): What are the Side Effects? Watch Before You Start!

  • Lexapro or Escitalopram is a medication that is used to treat Depression and Anxiety. Get a Doctors perspective and learn the symptoms of depression and anxiety and how this medication can play a role in you treating it. You'll learn about both common and some of the more rare side effects that you should watch out for.
Lexapro (Escitalopram) is in the family of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). They influence the amount of Serotonin that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Those who are going through anxiety you may have symptoms such as sudden and unexplained onset of a rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, pain in your chest, fear of dying, numbness and tingling throughout your body or just a generalized feeling of anxiousness all the time that you just can’t explain.
If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor. We will discuss more concerning side effects such as serotonin syndrome as well.

Why are people on this video forum to frighten people?? I am here to read positive stories from people who have tried this medication. As the doctor as already stated, not all medications work for everyone; and why would they when we are so all individual? Fair enough if you’ve taken it and had a bad experience- but why deter people and scare them into not taking it. Also if your sex life is too important than freeing yourself from crippling anxiety and depression maybe people should re evaluate there priorities for a while. As the doctor mentioned if you do get side effects they are usually short lived, otherwise try something else as it may not be the medication for you. If our anxiety is too much while taking it; isn’t it the actual anxiety we suffer with in the first place ?? Rather than the ‘medicine’ causing it? Something to think about as I’ve had to tell myself the same. I thought this was a great valuable video and whoever else is on this journey I am on day 3. 15 years of anxiety and depression disabling me and it doesn’t get any better, only worse... its just a progressive illness like anything else if not treated.

Thanks for your well thought out and articulate response. Too often we have the tendency to think that what happens in our own personal world must be the truth for everybody else and all should follow it. We are all individuals and have different genetic makeups that process medications different. To throw out a life changing treatment path because of a possible side effect is sad. I hope that you find what works for you. Good luck!

Not me.....I have been on Lexapro for a long time and it is one of single best things to EVER of happen to me. It took my severe, overwhelming GAD and crushed into submission. I mean pulverized it. I can't get anxious if I put all my will into it. People bash the libido reducing effects, however, as a celibate Buddhist, the libido crushing effects are much welcomed and have enhanced my meditation and spiritual path. Sure, I may look like a walking zombie to the Western world, but I sure as shit feel good doing it. I wish Lexapro was available when I needed it most....25 years ago when I was a teen struggling with constant day in, day out fear that got me NOWHERE in life. 15 years of anxiety and depression is WAY to long. I know, I've been there.

      Golden Manuever
Hello, I am really glad to have read your experience with this medication. I too suffer with what you describe, GAD, anxiety in its most severest form. I am now on day 4 of taking this medication. I honestly feel ok, no side effects that are troubling me so far. If I am to get side effects when are these likely to occur? I am feeling nothing so far. Would it be anything to do with the fact that I have been on antidepressant medication a few years ago? I really feel positive that this medication can work for me? I was on Prozac before for 6 months but was feeling numb and had anxiety whilst taking it so i stopped them. I am glad to hear you are well..

Thank you for your reply. This video gave me hope. I am very grateful for that. I am on day 4 of taking the medication. No side effects to report so far, if I am to start experiencing side effects when is that likely to start? Also how long is this medication safe to use for and when coming off it- are there any success stories you can share. Thank you.

Melanie Hi Melanie. First off please by all means ignore these videos in which someone tells us about their experience 20 minutes after taking Lexapro. It take a MINIMUM of 90 days for this to straighten the serotonin issue out. That is how slowly it “ramps up.” During that 90 days is when you’ll experience a change IF ANY aka side effects. For me, being a healthy and fit male it increased my libido and by 180 days it was all gone. Other than that, I’ve had NO side effects. The weight gain for me has been nominal. I am lean and strong so +5lbs hasn’t been much of a change.

I've been on Lexapro for 2 months now and have noticed a big change in my anxiety. I can stay away from home for much longer than before. I no longer panic at the merr thought of going out of town or spending the night somewhere other than home. My patience with my students has greatly increased. I had a fight in my class the other week and one kid had a bloody nose. I didn't panic. I didn't even yell. I just handled it. That never would have happened before.

June 2021 - I am still on lexapro 10mg daily. I still feel an improvement in my overall well-being. I did not experience any negative side effects. No appetite changes, no weight gain, no sexual side effects. I understand that not all medications will work for everyone but this significantly helped me.

I think I owe my life to lexapro. I was not suicidal, I have too many people that love me to be taking my own life, but I seriously believe that anxiety and severe depression was slowly killing me. I would have stayed in bed ALL DAY if I could have. I can’t imagine doing that now. I’m going out more now, and I’m really looking forward to the summer here in Australia. Please consider this drug if you’re suffering with anxiety and depression....it certainly worked for me. 👍🏽🌹

What I don’t understand is when people worry about side effect
    If you really suffered depression
Then the side effects are nothing
    I remember saying to myself
I would prefer a broken leg than depression
    That’s how bad it is
    I also had eye surgery
    Very painful the first night
    And guess what
    I welcomed it
It took my mind off depression
    Could think about depression
I was more in eye pain
    And I remember saying
    This is nothing
If you can put up with depression
    You can do anything
    The fact is
    If you suffer
    It won’t hurt trying
