I'm glad I came to check out the channel. I just received my red root floaters. Beautiful plants.
That is fascinating. Their red color must be some kind of stress response. If they stay red in a tank, perhaps it’s a good indication of low nitrates
i thought it was bad that they were red i didnt understand that it was good for low nitrates thank you
I literally cannot get any floaters to live except for cabbage - I let my turtle eat the cabbage and they are from outside in a bucket - My bucket now has a toad and a crayfish living in it, so I might build a pond for some creatures around here in need lol.. Anyway, I cannot even grow duckweed. Are you kidding me? LOL! I have tried full sun, half shade, full shade.. I killed off my salvina too.
Very interesting!!! I kept adding an iron supplement to the water in hopes that my red root floaters would turn red, and they’re still all green! lol
However, I don’t know how I’m going to starve them of nitrate without ruining the balance of my aquarium… it’s super healthy and all of the plants are growing like crazy…. Guess I’ll just keep them green. loo
Yea, I don't look at the tops anyway. I just want the plants to suck up nitrates but not multiple like duckweed.
You are the king bro
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for these tips! I have tried them in the past, now I am going to try again!
This is an awesome indicator for when you need to fertilize your tank.
Great information. Good details.
Excellent.
Wow vary informative
I keep the ones I ordered from you in a bin for now. I add nitrate and light, because of transportation issues... they are not in a so good shape becayse they dont like getting wet on top. So I want them healthy before adding them in my tank (where is zero nitrate, all the time). They are under grow lights that can grow tomatoes so... full sun 😂
I bought red root floaters online and from my personal experiences with them, they're actually really sensitive plants. When I received them they were bright red, and once I put them in my tank I had a huge die-off (perhaps being put in a still-cycling tank without the right fertilizer didn't help?) In the end only two of my floaters just barely survived the ordeal. Changing to a better fertilizer (Co-Op's easy green) seemed to save them, as they previously were unable to grow new roots
They gradually began to spread and I currently have a small handful. Then one day I decreased the lighting in my tank to help reduce some algae growth, and once again I saw them dropping their red roots and any red leaves. They're in recovery mode again, just from changing the light, and the roots and leaves are now green with a small amount of pink. And I think I'll keep them that way, I'd rather have healthier and more resilient plants.
I think it might be better to ship them green because there's less likely to be a huge amount of die-off.
I will have to try this, the RRF in my tank is growing like crazy but all of the new growth is green. I will most likely need to do 2-3 water changes a week to keep nitrates really low.
Bloom nutrients instead of nitrogens.
Noo I was adding N in my fertilizer I'm going to make a new batch without it and some water changes
I just want my red root floaters' roots to get nice and long.
I know they will be red. Lol
I heard iron makes them turn red?
