While I agree with this list, there is one thing you forgot. Just ONE small thing.
Despite its clunkiness and occasional weirdness: The mechanics in Sims 2 work. And they usually work as intended.
Let's compare visiting restaurants: In The Sims 2 you go to a restaurant lot, where all the work NPCs will be there and ready to do their jobs. Townies will then arrive after your Sims and get seated and do other restaurant related stuff. You Sims can get a table without a problem, place an order without a problem, get served their food without a problem and can skip pay... err I mean pay the bill without a problem. Depending on how the restaurant is build you can continue to spend time there, meet some neighbors etc. Dating and hangout mechanics also work quite well in the restaurants.
In Sims 4 you can consider yourself lucky if you get to the eating part. And may the Sim lord have mercy when you are there for an outing! Half the time my Sims visit a bar the bartender just... leaves. And may come back two hours later. Never had this problem in 2. Never. I love building restaurants in the games and I love having my Sims treat themselves occasionally to just have a nice meal and relax or have a place to meet others. Or perhaps the restaurant is just part of the bowling alley to grab something to eat while you make a fool of yourselves. I love doing this in 2, because it works fine. Worst that happens is the waiter throwing food on your Sim (which is an intended possibility) or taking longer due to many Sims taking up space (which an be avoided if you leave enough space to maneuver and is somewhat intended). In 4? The waiter forgets you exist. The cooks don't do much. Your Sim waits an entire day for... SOMETHING, while in 2 it takes at most an ingame hour to receive the food.
That's the thing. Sims 2 mechanics are deep and intricate, often even interwoven with new or old mechanics from EPs and, usually, work without big issues. Most of Sims 2 bugs are funny glitches or have to be actively provoked with cheats. Bugs in 4 are a constant annoyance and while a lot of the mechanics are neat on paper, they fall completely flat in practice. Doesn't help that most of them are tied to the mood system, which... is way too shallow and too easy to manipulate. And on top of that they often just don't work as intended. Restaurants in 4 could be just as cool as in 2. The core ideas and mechanics are there, they just don't work.
Sims 4's core problem is the lack of intricate and WORKING mechanics. Sims 2 was a product of love and care and it shows in all the little details and it can be felt while playing. The clunkiness? Eh, it's part of the charm, the game still largely works as intended is well thought out and fun.
Sims 2 will remain my favourite. It has introduced me into the series and I spend most of my Sim time on it. I loved building own neighbourhoods, the emphasis on creative storytelling, the Sims that feel alive and have their own personality, the wants and fears (and its excellent dynamics!), the vacation EP that actually has vacations rather than "adventures", the excellent business EP... the comment is too long already, let's just say: I agree with your list. :P
Sims 2 has the heart that Sims 4 desperately needed.
Oh! And of course. *turns on radio* *Salsa is blasting through the house* This! :D

I absolutely think that TS3 had the most to offer in gameplay content, too bad they didn't actually make the game properly but left it glitchy and butt ugly. Not to mention the stripping of all sorts of nice details from TS2. How ever; the open world is awesome, the sheer amount of content and things to do in the earlier packs is unparalleld in the franchise (later packs start to get that familiar rotter flavour to them that permeates TS4: not much substance and so many pointles, annoying "features"... looking at you university pack, I don't want my swamp dwelling vampire to be a "jock" th?? Atleast in Late Night you could opt out from the celebrity system or disable celebrity feature altogether.)
And before anyone comes at me with "but CC!", if you need to download fanmade content to make the game paletable or fun, the game isn't doing its job. Excluding downloading content to customize details to your personal preference (new clothes/hair/items...) to fix compatability issues with old games & new interfaces and downloading premade lots/neighbourhoods/families for the heck of it, you shouldn't need to download any content for your game.
All and all; TS1 is a classic where this all began, chaotic, sometimes rediculously difficult, wonderfully whimsical but not quite living up to its potential. TS2 has the most soul, is the richest in details and was obviously made out of love for the series, offering the peak of this franchise despite its age and restrictions. TS3 was ambitious and had such incredible ideas behind it but was ultimately released unfinished, glitchy and without proper testing, not to mention the constantly dropping quality of the later packs. TS4 is mostly just souless cash crab with incredibly agressive marketing campagne holding it up to revenue, tho, credit when credit is due: the building engine is the best in the franchise.
Here's hoping that TS5 will be open world, full of flexible & varying gameplay content, rich in wonderful & whimsy details, easy on the eye (not plasticy like TS4, but balanced like TS2), fun and intuititive to build & create with and properly finished. Not holding my breath tho....

I’d say you potentially forgot one major thing: the best thing about TS2 is the ability to play rotationally - something that’s not possible in the other games without extensive modding. I love playing a whole neighbourhood and seeing the storylines of the families interweave and change. Story progression is actually my least favourite feature of TS3 ( and now 4) and it didn’t work as intended anyway. Playing rotationally in TS2 allows you to leave one family and head over to the next - they’ll be right where you left them and you can carry on micromanaging their lives! I love it so much.

Great video. Sims 2 remains my favorite game.
I love that wants and fears can change depending on what's going on in the game while playing. For instance, in one family I had the father go and fix the microwave that had broken down. While doing that he got zapped and his son happened to be there and saw it happen. Father survived but I noticed that the son had rolled the fear of his father dying!
I love a lot of the little details in the game: parents tucking in their children, looking at things out of windows, active children running everywhere. Kids running to meet their parents when they come home. Or the one child I had that started at a -6 daily points with her baby brother! Not only that but she started gossiping about him to her other brother! Sibling rivalry?
There are some things I wish were better with the game (it is old, after all) but I just can't stick with Sims 3 for any length of time and I've never played Sims 4 so I'm stuck playing Sims 2 until I just can't anymore !

TS2 is the real best sims game tbh. It still runs beautifully on computers, it had the most love and care put into it, you don’t need to buy a supercomputer to run it on high settings (though you do need Graphics Rules Maker)
It has its issues, it’s definitely the most easily broken of the games, but the ability to *easily* create new neighborhoods using SC4 and build whatever you want is something that neither of its successors have managed to recreate.
The only bad thing is that the heyday was over a decade ago, many of the mods and CC are disappearing or the meshes are becoming inaccessible. Still, I don’t have issues enjoying the game even with that.

Small correction on the apartment bit: you CAN'T build your own Apartments in Sims 2... OFFICIALLY. There are no features in Sims 2 GUI that allow you to build an apartment. To make an apartment you have to plop down a residential lot, build and decorate a structure and then use the changelotzoning command in the developers console (" cheat menu") to make it an apartment. The console is not something we the players are supposed to see (unless we cheat) and therefor I don't consider it an official feature.

Sims 2 was full of small details like using cabinets when cooking and actually enter cars. I am a 90s "kid" so I miss things like landlines and cash registers. I would love a Sims 2 remake, as the game is a little clunky, I have had a hard time returning to Sims 2 & 3 after 4, some of the quality of life changes get hard to play without :(

I don't know how many hours I spent putting songs and other things in 2 when I was a kid. I loved having my sims listen to Weird Al, Bowling for Soup, and Metallica. I will also never forget having 90s and early 2000s cheesy pop songs play while building and laughing from seeing my sims watching The Sopranos and DBZ

I also miss creating neighborhoods in TS2 and having so many unlimited houses. The gallery is very useful in Ts4 but it sucks only having to fit houses in certain dimensions. I also really miss the dramatic scenes like the first woohoo, labor, weddings and even death

YESS again, couldn't said better myself!. My favourite topic of all time, i was kind of hoping myself you would actually be covering this up over!. I'm completely have got to be agreed with you on all of those things points you've made here. For me as long time fan of 2, It's just really feels so right when i played it, like literally everything is there. The wants and fears, buildings and cutscenes are all my time favourites, i could just see it everyday when i'm playing this god tier game, tbh. It's absolutely the best game ever in main games series in the franchise of all time, 3 is close second the best but TS2 however is just did it for me! ❤️❤️ TS4 is just absolutely are plain trash for me, i'd ended up getting bored and feels like i didn't really wanted to play it for some reasons and just left it for a couple of months. 2 is just way more better, you can clearly just tell you can't stop playing it because it was addictive in terms of everything.

    Sims 2 is my favorite❣👏
You did forget to mention that with FreeTime, you can also have a secondary aspirations, along with aspiration/work/needs perks that can further flesh out personalities. Also, with FreeTime's hobby system, there are secret lots that can be visited, whereby sims can meet other sims with their hobby interests (and you can get invites to multiple hobby lots).
Beginning with OFB, sims could earn badges (most expansuons thereafter offer bew ones), which play an even bigger role in FreeTime.
Oh, while the occults might not be a favorite for the series (depending on one's subjective opinions), you can have hybrid occults. The combinations make for some interesting and challenging gameplay (try playing with a vampire/plantsim hybrid).
One would think that Sims 3 or Sims 4 would have the best gameplay mechanics and graphic design choices, but I disagree. You touched on the one aspect, Sims 2 has the best genetic system, but it also has the most detailed gameplay actions (i.e. sims actually enter/exit cars, pull out of driveway/garage, etc.), game mechanics (sims will go into cabinets and drawers to pull out cooking utensils, are able to step over small objects on the floor, they also play a full game of chess, moving the pieces accordingly, etc.), game physics (hair and fur on pets move, couch cushions actually move accordingly, while sims sit, lounge, jump, etc., pool physics, hot tub water physics, snow physics, etc.), and my favorite detail is the 4th wall breaking, making it seem like the sims are sentient beings, aware that we are trying to manipulate their actions❣While Sims 3 sims can be made to look the most realistic, and Sims 4 have a higher graphic quality (albeit, a bit cartoonish), without the aforementioned aspects (as well as so many more I haven't mentioned), they cannot compare to the Sims 2 expressions and graphics. Since Sims 2 is nearly a twenty year old game, just a few added mods and CC default replacements, the Sims in Sims 2 are the most aesthetically pleasing (because of the gameplay, game mechanics/logical physics), imo.
So glad that there is still a very active Sims 2 community, because these pixelated characters are so worthy of investing time in❣

The Sims Summit thing they had really hammered home that I'm no longer the game's target demographic and I feel like the disconnect will be even more apparent in the next game and it'll be much more catered towards zoomers (no offense to zoomers but I'm almost 35 and probably just out of touch). I feel like the earlier games did a better job of appealing to people of all ages, and both men and women, whereas Sims 4 seems to cater mostly toward young adult women and teens.

Honestly, I think The Sims 4 is the best Sims game when it comes to mechanics and overal quality of life features. In Sims 4 the build/buy mode is better, CAS is better, live drag, short/normal/long lifespans, and The Sims 4 is a lot better when it comes to legacy challenges. The Sims 2 is however my favorite Sims game because of the attention to detail and the pacing of each day. The One thing I really hate about Sims 2 and 3 is the is the lifespan: Sims 2 has well-paced days but you age up way to fast and Sims 3 has better lifespan lengths but the days go by way to fast, in Sims 4 the lifespans are better lengths especcially because you can choose from short, normal, or long lifespans but each day feels a lot slower than The Sims 2.

9:58 Now wait a minute! You can build your own apartment in S3. And not just with the shells in buy debug. In fact Floodgate Apartments in Bridgeport is done like that.
Now, you can't build a penthouse without a stock building, yeah. But I've built quite a few apartments 4 or 5 stories tall. You can make the unit whatever size you like, from a fleabag studio to a multi-level condo. In fact, since in Bridgeport there's barely anyplace to build new stuff where apartments would make sense, I've done a few on 10-15 and 15x20 lots I could just squeeze in someplace.
Anyway it's exactly the same process as building any structure in S3, as well as building in a buy debug shell (except without it). Maybe you should do a build as a tutorial?

    • @Rekowcski
      @Rekowcski  2 года назад

I should really look into it. I’ve tried my own with the debug shells and stuff but it was always a mess. I just have memories of being a teenager and being able to make a sims 2 apartment in like 15 minutes and I think the simplicity is where the sims 2 is best for this.

@@Rekowcski @Rekowcski It is more complicated because you need buydebug on and restrictbuildbuyinbuildings off, but once you've got that it's simple. Three markers are needed, public room (any sim can go there) hidden room (any area inaccessible to player) and skip level (level up-down skips that level) and rbbb off lets you build outside a unit. Don't even finish the insides of hidden rooms and skipped levels, I just window them and done.

I don’t want to have to play multitudes of different households just to age up the population and create new generations.
