  • This video is diagnosing a dryer that doesn't spin but still makes noise like a motor is working. I go through all the scenarios of what could cause that and the fix for each of them. I replace the motor which fixes the problem. This is on a LG Tromm Dryer.
    Here is a link to the dryer motor I got that fixed it.

    Thank you so very much for making this video. After taking the dryer apart yesterday, I found that one spring fell off the magnets. I used the link you provided, and just finished installing the motor and 1st load is in! I appreciate you so much! Saved me some time, money and headache! - Maria

    I just starting having this issue with our dryer.
    So glad I found your video first thing.
    I don't have the time to actually take the thing apart right now so I'm going to use the tip Jerry posted below and give it a little spin from the inside until I can get it apart and check everything out.
    I hope it's just that clip or a spring.
    Thanks again for this video. Really really helpful and saved my favorite dryer. My 80 yr old father was set on just finding a used dryer. Lol
    Just the way he is, but doesn't realize the fix could be super easy. He's just at the age where he doesn't want to do this stuff anymore. So, being an only child I learned from an early age to fix my own things whenever possible. Now I fix my mother's and father's whenever possible as well. Lol
    He has no idea that this LG dryer is one of the best and was expensive. I wasn't going to let it go.
    Besides, nice to prove him wrong once in a while. ;) 👍

      Sounds like you got a good plan. Yeah manually spin it to get it started is a good test and good in a pinch until you can fix it.

    • @carolmeinhardt8227

      The spin didn't work and got a loud burning smell.
      So, I'm going to order a new motor. You made it look really easy to put in. I'd prefer to do that.
      Of course I'll check everything you said to as well.
      Thanks again.

    Awesome thanks! Had the exact same problem. When I looked in the motor, one of the springs connecting the same two parts had come off. I was lucky enough to simply put the spring back in place to resolve, but if it reoccurs, I'll likely replace the motor like you as I noticed some wear. So, thanks for the Amazon link as well. Appreciate you taking the time to post as it really helps the DIY troubleshoot an issue fast.

    that is a centrifugal switch for the motor. If the switch is not open, there is a capacitor to temporarily behaves like a 2nd AC phase to "kick start" the motor. When the motor starts spinning, the mass of those fling the switch open to disengage the capacitor, because running that capacitor all of the time would wear it out.

  • @wnrsm

    The broken pieces are a centrifrugal switch. It either switches on the heating element only when the motor (and its attached blower) are spinning - or it cuts off the power to the motor if it jams and stops turning (preventing overheating if powered but stopped.) In my case, one of the spring-retaining hooks broke off and it was making a clicking noise. I drilled a small hole next to the hook and ran the end of the spring through it. That lasted a few months and now I have the hum that requires a kickstart. I suspect the capacitor but cannot find a replacement. The sure thing is to replace the motor for about $115 which includes the capacitor and those spring loaded parts.
    Some dryers have motors with a replaceable centrifrugal switch. LG isn't one of them.

    • @mavamQ
      @mavamQ 4 года назад

      You are correct those parts control the centrifugal switch. The centrifugal switch when not spinning energizes the START winding , giving the motor enough torque to start under load. Once it starts spinning the switch goes open and only the RUN winding are energized. Your centrifugal switch is stuck in the run mode and there isn't enough torque to start it. Hand spinning gets over the start torque and it runs fine.

    I like your video. I unplugged mine for 30 minutes, and plugged everything back in. The drum would turn freely by hand from the inside. I think possibly the thermal control overheated and shut off the motor. When I plugged it back in, it started fine. Now, here is my question. If this continues, I will have to take off the top and front. Mine is a stack unit, so the dryer sits on top. Do I have to take it off to trouble shoot the inside? I have a nice step ladder and can access the top if I have to. It is in a narrow laundry area and hard to remove and put back up.

    • @g3mccotter
      @g3mccotter  2 года назад

      I don't see why you couldn't do it if it's on top. If it's the supporting one on bottom then no. If it's in a tight space it will be difficult is all.

    Hi. I am looking for pointers on a Kenmore Model 81282, basically an LG from all my research.
    I used it for a year and then it sat in basement storage for 5 years. Just moved and hooked it up. Control panel lights up, but when I hit start there is an electrical hum in the area of the power cord, but the motor does not start. I popped the top off, an belt seems to be intact and tight.
    I am going to take the control panel and front off, check rollers/blower and basically look for anything else obvious. Any suggestions beyond that? Any obvious possibilities I am overlooking?

    • @g3mccotter
      @g3mccotter  3 года назад

      Try and manually spin it when it hums. If it rotates after a little push it probably needs a motor

      @@g3mccotter I ended up taking it completely apart. Took ff the belt and drum, put vice grips on the motor and tried to turn it. It is seized up. I guess there was too much humidity it the basement/garage where it was stored. i hosed it down with WD40, to see if it will help with corrosion, will try it again tomorrow night, but I am reasonably certain that it will have to be replaced. Nothing else showed any signs of wear or corrosion, just the motor, so I am hoping this is only problem.

    Hi. I just bought a second hand dryer ( non returnable). I would love to know if it’s the motor or the belt , or something simple problem.
    The dryer is LG DLEX2501V When I turn on the dryer empty it spins sometimes but if I put a load of clothes in, the drum doesn’t move. When I tried to spin the drum I feel a resistance, but when I took the top of I could see the idle while the belt slipping( spinning ) around the drum. What could be the problem? Thanks for the help.

    • @g3mccotter
      @g3mccotter  4 года назад +1

      If you can see your belt spinning but it's not spinning the drum as in it's slipping you might just need a new belt. That one could be worn out or maybe someone put the wrong size belt on.

      @@WaveProject Sorry to hear that. In the case of mine, which had a problem similar to yours (drum spins empty/no spin loaded) it turned out to be the door hinge is tired so the weight of the wet clothes shifts the housing just enough so that the door closed switch doesn't work. I turned the top Phillips screw on the door out one full turn so that it presses more firmly on the switch when the door is shut and it solved the problem. I guess I better stop using the dryers open door as a wet clothes holder!

    You don't need a new motor. This type of motor should run for ever. These metal pieces are designed to break after 5-10 years. This is actually a switch for the motor and it has two metal pieces held by two springs. If you have a dremel tool and small file set, you can repair this without the need to purchase a new motor.

      @@g3mccotter Yes, I just trouble shot an LG. Disassembled, plugged in the controls, removed the door switch and taped it closed. Then start an air dry cycle . When you draw the tension arm left it closed the safety switch and the motor starts up. I was able to keep it from spinning by holding the fan on the end of the shaft. I will inspect that centrifugal transmission ( the bits you found) and windings.
      I believe the transmission holds the motor in high torque mode till the drum is up to speed then switches it to a more efficient, low energy current usage. At least that was my first thought when I watched it run.
