Ron, yes. You can move this between different vehicles. But if you want the extended features that let you access model-specific detailed data then that requires a software update for that vehicle. The OBDLink comes with 1 free model-specific update. Additional car models can be purchased for a fee. I used my update to download software specific to my Mustang, and it really expands how much data can be seen. For my other cars, the generic OBD data has been enough for me to do what I want to do.

@@watchmanexpert yeah, I leave my OBD module plugged in all the time. I do unplug it during the winter, when I am not driving the car. All you have to do is fire up the app and it should connect. Sorry but I can't answer your question about the Duramax.
Hi Damion, thanks for watching! I found selectors for transmission gear status and gear ratio, but I couldn’t find a setting for transmission temperatures.
The speedo usually reports a mile faster so that when you go 10 over, you are actually going 9 over so you're less likely to get a ticket. I've noticed this on many cars. Toyota does this also.
canoeshoe - good point! I’ve noticed this on my Honda as well, the speedometer says you’re going faster than you really are. Since making this video I found a setting in the OBD software that lets you calibrate the OBD speedometer reading, so you can make the two match. I found the best way to check to see if your speedometer is accurate is using a GPS. That’s how I knew my Honda was running a little behind.
Hi Mike - Just thought I would let you know that I too have been waiting for my ordered 2019 mustang convertible for quite some time now. Ordered it on October 1 of last year and am still waiting. From Ford's tracking system it appears that it may be here in the middle of March. Just in time for spring. Based on your timeline I was at least prepared for the wait. Thanks. Steve
I recently purchased this device for my 2011 Hennessey Raptor. Super cool to track boost, engine power, and rpm. I see you monitor boost in you dashboard. In you experience does the boost and horsepower track to what your stang is rated at? My supercharger is built to boost at around 10 pounds and the Hennessey dyno indicated my truck pushed 605HP at time of test in 2011. Today, at 6000 rpm, the OBD dongle is showing 20 pounds of boost and 800HP.
Jeff, those are amazing numbers! My car isn't boosted - I think it's vacuum on the dash gauge. IMO the only real test for horsepower is on the dyno, not these devices. If I had to guess I'd say I'm putting down about 440 at the wheels. If you are pushing 605 I'm not going to mess with you! :)
jayjay67shelby - Thanks for subscribing and congrats on ordering one of these little gadgets. It is a ton of fun. As are the Guitar’s! I appreciate you stopping in!
Hi John - I'll do that! OBDLink offers 1 free software download when you purchase this product, and I think the Ford download option contains similar data. I need to circle back and compare the two.
@@MikeFyxdt I think you are mistaken. From what I have read elsewhere and on the MX+ web site --- This applies only to the MX+, not the MX or others. Admittedly there was a single mis-shift when I was trying to go to 5th gear and went into third gear, but vehicle seems to be okay from that and doesn't drive funny or anything.
There is a HUGE list of options to monitor under Dashboard > SAE PIDs...but I don't specifically see trans temp. The web says 'yes' if your car has this sensor installed. Hope that helps!
Great question! This device is more of a reader than a "writer". The only thing I have successfully done is clear error codes, but I have not tried to trigger events.

I have been advised with many different reasons but would like to get a more accurate explanation before taking it into garage for diagnostics.
Great question, but I've never seen that level of diagnostic information from this tool. A mechanics diagnostic tool might provide that information because the higher price units can access more data. This might be a question for the manufacturer.
I have the same OBDLink MX+ and a Charger 2022, but my live data only refreshs every 1 seconds. It is very slow, do you have any idea whats the problem? I have a samsung Note 9.

Do you think you could post a vid on how to control windows lights and such..... I have an older (98) supercharged regal grand sport so non of the options are available for me to try.... Im curious of how it works and i sure it would make a great follow up video !!!!
Vincent - sorry it took me some time to reply... I have been searching for a way to be able to control the car like you suggest and I'm stumped. I don't think this device/software can do it without a third party app. I'm not giving up, but as of now the task illudes me!
Hi Mike. Great video. I love data and would like to create some charts. What data can you export with the app? What format is the log file? For map, beside latitude and longitude, does it export anything else? Velocity, G-forces, altitude? For how long can you create a report file? Can you record logs from a +15 hours trip?
Cosmin F - Thanks for the nice words! Great questions - I can at least give you a partial answer... the log file is saved as a .csv (comma separated value) file. I generally only grab data for vehicle speed and throttle position, but you can choose from a huge list of different data parameters. For my simple needs I get a snapshot (in elapsed seconds) about every second, plus the GPS latitude and longitude and the speed/throttle data. I don't know if you can set limits to the log file size - but suppose you wanted to grab 10 parameters. If you logged that much data every second for 15 hours, that file would be 54,000 rows of data with over half a million individual pieces of data! I don't know if there's a point where the software (or your hardware) will max out...but I'd love to hear back from you to see what your experience is. Thanks for adding spice to the conversation!
Hi Bernie HF - if you swipe to the second screen in the OBD link app you’ll see a tool called “Performance”. That’s where the 0 to 60 and quarter mile tracker are located.

Good video. You mentioned the Hondas. Have you tried it on them? I have an old Honda Pilot and wondering with the MX+ Honda update what extra detail level it gives as I consider buying an MX+ or other scanner.
@village g - I've used the MX+ in both my 2000 Odyssey and my 2008 Accord. I never bought any additional diagnostics for the Hondas but the base OBDLink software had no problem recognizing them. If you are looking to be able to read basic codes on Your Pilot then this reader should work fine. My Hondas haven't really had problems that needed diagnosing, beyond the basic scanning software. But I do scan them before I do my state inspection, and so far both vehicles have passed on the OBD-II test with nothing out of the ordinary.
Thanks for this. I got it and tried it today. What I'm trying to do is track down some sputtering at stopping when the A/C is on. Any tips on what to watch?
I have a friend that has this unit and wants to sell it to me. Will the unit be "married" to his phone and / or vehicle, or will I be okay to purchase it and use it accordingly?
As I recall, there were two free vehicle software downloads available to the original owner. I think you would be fine using it with your vehicles, but you may have to pay for any car-specific downloads. I think he would still be able to use it with the generic car data. If it's a friend selling it, then ask him to let you give it a try first.
I just bought the linkmx+ and following the mfg instructions you're supposed to start the vehicle BEFORE you plug in the obd. So why make a video that doesn't follow the steps that the makers tell you to do. ? I know it may not make much difference , but we are coming on here to learn. I really didn't learn much. Nice car though.
When I shot the video, I had already paired the device with the car. Once the device is recognized, I don't think it matters whether it's plugged in first or the car is running first. In fact I have left my device plugged in for months at a time. But if the instructions say to start the car first when it's installed, then that's what people should be doing, and I appreciate you pointing that out!
Hey Jeff! No, my car is naturally aspirated - i.e. no boost. I haven't used it, but there is a boost screen on this OBDII device - you can see the boost gauge briefly at 3:59 in the video. As long as you car has boost as part of the engine management system, this can probably read it. Hope that helps - thanks for your question! :)
can i use the mx+ on multiple vehicles? i just assumed i could, but read an article this morning that said the fixd bluetooth dongle could connect to 3 vehicles and mx+ only to 1?
No, I've used mine on at least three different vehicles. What they might be referring to is that when you buy one of these, they give you a credit for a free "extended features" download, which is car specific, and gives you access to additional parameters.
Hi Alex - that's a good question... I'll have to give it a try! (I never pair the phone when I make videos because I'm usually using the camera, and also I don't want copyrighted music playing in the background.)
So I've been seeing OBD scanners like blue driver and OBDLinks MX+. Are these worth it? Need bi directional abilities and I'm seeing conflicting results with those two type scanners. But they're intriguing to me Launch CRP479? Or X6? 5 more special functions is no joke. Iam an auto tech (going on 4 yrs) and want to go to the next level (Apprentice/Journeyman) I do work at a shop, which do you recommend of these two? I'm trying too really stay below $280 and get most for the buck Of course I would need them to be able to read up to 2019, any recommendations would be fantastic
Hey Mike are you familiar with bi-directional scanners too. I don't have the expertise or knowledge yet to be able to tell the differences between them. I am looking for one that has the most features but gets either free Software updates or at least the lowest cost-effective annual pricing for the updates. I have looked at Autel, Foxwell, and the INNOVA 5610 for starters. I am looking to pay maybe around $500USD for the unit, but if I have to pay a little more so be it. I just want the biggest & best bang for the dollar. Shortly I will be retiring & will be able to spend a lot more time working on my own car as well as family members cars. I think these scanner are very useful in saving money and a fun toy to learn by. Thank U. Plse respond asap.
Anthony, unfortunately no. I don’t have any experience with them. I understand the concept, but I only know enough to probably screw up my car. Read-only is my safe place. It must be exciting to be near retirement, and to be able to pursue new adventures. If you get into the bidirectional scanners then stop back and give me an update what you found!
@@MikeFyxdt Ok thank you. And I shall continue to follow you because I like your videos & maybe in the future you may venture into the world of bi-directionals. If you do I will most certainly look at anything YOU would suggest. Thank U
@tarapos - thank you! I am using an EDUTIGE Dual Microphone ETM-001 with my GoPro in all of the driving footage. The desk video is probably just the microphone on my iPhone 10.
Starting around the 8 min mark, I was trying to see how much (if any) lag there was in the display vs the OEM instruments; initially it looked significant - but then I realized that your 'window' was not synch'd to the actual display - now, I can't really make out the rpm on the display, but the speed reading certainly looked to be quite reasonably closely synch'd from what I could see. Your embedded window was a nice idea but because it's not synch'd it is quite misleading (and negatively so!) Maybe you can just comment on what you actually see - is there much of a lag of display vs instrument? The rpm is probably the easiest to recognize how quick it is. I'm using a cheap ELM Bluetooth device and the lag is horrible, it's OK for diagnostics, but hopeless for real-time. Wondering if the OBDLink is worth the premium price. Appreciate your feedback
decosse01 - Your eye for detail is excellent: The OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth unit is actually _very responsive_ , and there was no noticeable lag. The problem you saw in my video was that the background footage was shot at the standard 30 fps, but my phone's screen grab used variable/different timing. As a result, when editing the two together, I had to constantly adjust the inset OBD video so it lined up. The sequence where I tested the Performance tools (around 8:00) was synchronized at the start, but drifted out of sync pretty badly. It also skips in places where it dropped frames. I guess by 8 minutes of editing I just missed it. Thanks for noticing and pointing it out, so I can address it here in the comments!
@@MikeFyxdt Thanks Mike! I can certainly appreciate the difficult in achieving that synch through editing, especially after the fact with videos already 'in the can'! The main question for me was answered by your prompt reply - it's nice to have that affirmed - much appreciated. Incidentally I searched through many videos trying to find an example of how good the 'lag' was with these OBDLink devices, having seen a hint of this, I was keen to explore further; yours was the only one that came even close - a great service would be if you could shoot a short video that captures both OEM and phone display together to demonstrate this specific capability (which for me is the most important factor in these devices). Thanks again for demonstrating all those other capabilities.
@decosse01 - Well I finally was able to do a test, and the answer is that there is a slight amount of lag - milliseconds - between the OBDLink MX+ and the dash gauges. It's negligible - most probably a result of the Bluetooth connection. But the OBD device is very consistent. I shot a video with the OBDII screen and the dash in the same picture so you can see for yourself - you'll have to let me know what you think! Video is coming soon...
Yes, I'm pretty sure you need the OBDLink software (free) to activate and set up this scanner. But there are other compatible software apps you can use with it as well.
Has anyone had any problems with this unit draining the cars battery? I have a 2009 Honda Accord that I plan to leave this plugged in on unless I'm traveling. Any input is appreciated.
Hi Michael, you bring up an excellent point. I leave my ODB plugged in all the time on my Mustang and I never thought about it being a significant draw on the current. I don't remember whether the ODB port draws power when the car is not running and not in the accessory mode. That said, if your car will be sitting for a while then it's pretty easy to just reach under the dash and unplug it if you are concerned.
Techman Tobi - thanks for the nice words and for subbing! I have not found this feature. My OBD lives most of the time in my Mustang, which is manual transmission. I think the clutch pedal works as a deadman’s switch. If it’s not pressed then she doesn’t crank. If I stumble upon this feature In the future I’ll update my answer, but for now I’m going with ‘no’.
@@MikeFyxdt Thanks sir for the video. In fact, even recent cars with automatic transmissions and push-button start, you have to depress the brake pedal to start the car. Still some models do have the factory installed remote start (obviously with no brake pedal applied). Nice video again. I have the MX+ and it's a great gadget.
@N.N .T - Interesting question! I can't answer - but if I had to guess then "no" I don't think these devices can change the odometer of any car. If you need specific information I suggest you contact the manufacturer. Their support page is www.obdlink.com/support/mxp/. Good luck and thanks for watching!
The MX+ comes with one free car-specific upgrade. Instructions are here: www.scantool.net/scantool/downloads/265/mxp_add-on_instructions.pdf. I think the optional car-specific software can be purchased through the OBDLink app, but I haven't done it. Hope that helps!
Attila EKWB - good question! It's available through the OBDLink app. To see what's available (for different vehicles, too) go to Settings > Get Enhanced OEM Add-Ons. You'll see a menu with different car manufacturers and you can drill down to the vehicle you need.
@@Attila_Gobor I don't have any experience whether this can actually disable a feature like that - rather I think of its purpose to read the data and look for errors. I'd be interested to hear if you can re-write the programming to turn the lights off. Keep us posted!

@@omararafat Hi! The short answer I received from OBDLink tech support is that the OBD-II data is mostly related to emissions data, but that some aspects of hybrid (or electric) car data may be available depending on model. Here is the full text of my message from Technical Support at OBDLink.com: "The OBDLink app, by default, only connects to OBD-II(emissions-related) data. However, we have found that Most Hybrid vehicles and some electric vehicles support a subset of OBD-II PIDs. However, this varies from vehicle to vehicle." I also asked is there model-specific data that can be purchased/accessed that lets you read hybrid/electric vehicle system reports... and the reply was: "The OBDLink apps enhanced diagnostics add-ons do add the ability to read certain hybrid PIDs from supported makes and models. However, it would depend entirely upon your vehicle to support reading these PIDs." Hope this helps! Mike :)

I used my update to download software specific to my Mustang, and it really expands how much data can be seen. For my other cars, the generic OBD data has been enough for me to do what I want to do.
Ok, I was just about to pause the video and then I saw your Marshall amp and guitars….. lol!

Mike great video...One question. does it show Transmission Temps?
Hi Damion, thanks for watching! I found selectors for transmission gear status and gear ratio, but I couldn’t find a setting for transmission temperatures.
Nice video sir, you have a kind personally. Enjoy the stick mustang!
Thank you so much for the nice words, Mohammed Hnoosh! I'm celebrating 6 months with the car - it has been a thrill!
Thanks for the review mike great Presentation I'm planning to buy it for my Nissan Altima 2015 🤟
Michael V - awesome! Let us know how you like it!
Thanks. Steve
Hi Steve - March is here! And good things are worth waiting for. Congrats on the incoming 'Stang 'Vert...
Good vidie, Do you still use the OBDLINK?
Lol, I haven't in quite some time. It's there if I throw an error code but so far so good!
Thanks for the review, just ordered one. Your guitars are gorgeous btw. Cant go wrong with a 335 Gibby :)
jayjay67shelby - Thanks for subscribing and congrats on ordering one of these little gadgets. It is a ton of fun. As are the Guitar’s! I appreciate you stopping in!
You should check out the Forscan Lite app. You can access enhanced data that you can’t see with just the standard obd2 protocol.

Jason B you are correct. The free download I referred to is what the “plus” in MX+ is for, the additional model specific diagnostics, which is the model I have. Sorry if it caused any confusion and thanks for clarifying!

Which sensors would you use to create a display for misfires ? I have misfires on a brand new car that's never been redlined with only 4000 miles, and there's no error codes, just the data from the 06 sensor stuff. Admittedly there was a single mis-shift when I was trying to go to 5th gear and went into third gear, but vehicle seems to be okay from that and doesn't drive funny or anything.

Hey Mike. I love your Mustang :) Have you try to test transmission fluid temperature? I wonder if this device will read the temperature. Thanks
There is a HUGE list of options to monitor under Dashboard > SAE PIDs...but I don't specifically see trans temp. The web says 'yes' if your car has this sensor installed. Hope that helps!
Hi , can you change any of your cars' parameters such door chime, seat belt chime, TMPS on and off, automatic door lock...etc ? Thank you

Hi, I want to buy this for my 2017 BMW S1000R Motorcycle primarily, can you tell me the difference between the LX and the MX please?
Great video, would love to get the 0-60 dial, can you explain where is located in the app?

I didn’t even notice! 😁
Does the MX+ read transmission temps on the Honda’s?
Hey mike!!! is your stang super or turbocharged? i noticed the boost indicator. i'm looking for something that will read the boost on my 2.0 ecoboost
Nice device!! Great video!!
@Coyote carguy - Thanks Al! I just did a check on my other cars and all looks good. I can't believe I didn't get one of these until now...
can i use the mx+ on multiple vehicles? i just assumed i could, but read an article this morning that said the fixd bluetooth dongle could connect to 3 vehicles and mx+ only to 1?
No, I've used mine on at least three different vehicles. What they might be referring to is that when you buy one of these, they give you a credit for a free "extended features" download, which is car specific, and gives you access to additional parameters.
Great review! I guess you couldn't pair your phone with your car radio while using the OBDLink?
Hi Alex - that's a good question... I'll have to give it a try! (I never pair the phone when I make videos because I'm usually using the camera, and also I don't want copyrighted music playing in the background.)
Good stuff!
Jet City - Thanks! It was lots of fun...
What app did you use on the phone? Nice vid, and thank you for showing all the features of this scan tool!
W Williams - You're welcome! The app on the iPhone is the "OBDLink" app, which is native to this OBD reader - it comes with the purchase. I like it!

I was expecting the Mod Squad to come and arrest you after the music started playing.
MrPhilbert - wow, that would have been an interesting twist!
can use it to programe?
No, it can reset error codes, but you can’t program a tune for instants. That’s a different piece of equipment.
Your embedded window was a nice idea but because it's not synch'd it is quite misleading (and negatively so!)
Maybe you can just comment on what you actually see - is there much of a lag of display vs instrument?
@decosse01 - thanks for the idea. I'll see what I can do...

@@omararafat Hi! The short answer I received from OBDLink tech support is that the OBD-II data is mostly related to emissions data, but that some aspects of hybrid (or electric) car data may be available depending on model. Here is the full text of my message from Technical Support at OBDLink.com:
"The OBDLink app, by default, only connects to OBD-II(emissions-related) data. However, we have found that Most Hybrid vehicles and some electric vehicles support a subset of OBD-II PIDs. However, this varies from vehicle to vehicle."
I also asked is there model-specific data that can be purchased/accessed that lets you read hybrid/electric vehicle system reports... and the reply was:
"The OBDLink apps enhanced diagnostics add-ons do add the ability to read certain hybrid PIDs from supported makes and models. However, it would depend entirely upon your vehicle to support reading these PIDs."
