Played 2005-2011ish and had my best gaming moments in that game despite the graphics, pulling off encirclements, supply column ambushes, behind the lines raids, bombing runs and mechanised attacks with 50+ tanks is something I've not seen in any other game. Will be interesting to see the updated version.
YEAH MAN!!! that PARADROP into a massive battle was awesome, I remember seeing our tank column come in! THAT experience WITH UE5 graphics could be REALLY special!
I have yet to find a game that captures the sense of scale this game delivered
seen the same in planetside 2 back in the day, was epic so i know what you're talking about. I tried this game 15+ years ago and couldn't get into it but would try again if released on an updated engine.
I played in the early years and it was the best thing! The battles were insanely big and the campaigns were competitive
so its kinda like foxhole but WW2 fps with multiple roles where a ton of players fight on a large scale map with mini sector
Played this around 2008. Back then i didnt realized how much it actually shaped my taste in games...Planetside, Heroes & Generals, Squad or Hell Let Loose. I hope the devs gonna pull this off.

Man some of the best battles of any first person shooter I’ve ever had were in this game. When you’re infantry attacking a port city and bombers are flying overhead enemy destroyers shelling your position tanks on both sides going at it, it really makes it immersive.

The most kills Ive ever gotten in WW2OL was with a french destroyer solo…
I was in the Military when this game came out. I flew for the RAF as a fighter pilot for YEARS. There's never been a game similar to that. Planet side was the closest thing to it, but even that didn't compare to the stories that came with WWIIOL. One of the best memories was when the factories mattered more, we took 48 (players) in bombers, and 24 fighters and bombed the german tank factory. We lost two bombers, and no fighters in the process. It took hours, but we eliminated the factory. We lost one bomber to flak and another to fuel leak on the return home.

and I remember the good ole days too. when it first came to steam 2 years ago or so there was some awesome battles... damn shame the game doesnt have more players. going to UE5 will certainly help!
@@boogie5 I think two things could help the game a lot. #1 UE5 - graphics don't make a game, but to younger generations they think it does. #2 - integrated voice chat similar to games like Squad. #3 - Soundscape similar to Squad.

Such a weird thing to say, but no problem! - The sad thing about WWIIOL is that it NEEDS probably like 1 - 2 thousand players at a time to really flesh out those front lines. I remember that there used to be a battle across the entire frontline, and now you're lucky to have one town being fought for.

I played, moderated and even composed music for WWII Online (Later Battleground Europe) since June 2002 to around 2007. It provided tons of fun back then, and gave me people that I call friends to this day.
If this ever comes out i will be getting it IMMEDIATLY! Had so much fun back in the early 2000s flying planes, shooting tanks with anti tank guns and generally everything! Lots of guys from work played it and we had some fantastic battles over the years!

One very underrated thing nobody is noticing is the "smooth rotation" aspect of the gunplay and handling, similar to an option available in RS2 Vietnam which is very underrated and awesome.

The war game that broke my heart because my pc wasn't good enough was Soldner: Secret Wars. My pc could barely play BF:1942 at the time (2004). Luckily for me one of those PC/console gaming cafes opened up nearby.

As a huge WWII history nerd, this is my dream game. One where you can take on any role from rifleman, tanker, pilot, artilleryman, or even the supply sergeant hundreds of miles behind the line. If the development defies all odds and this actually gets made, the only issue I can foresee is time. By the time something this ambitious comes out I will probably be in my thirties with very little time to play games anymore. Imagine jumping into a fully manned B-17 with the boys, only to have to jump offline somewhere halfway over the English channel because you have to go to work or tend to the kids or something.
gonna be getting into this game after summer holidays. i hear that the community is super nice and after playing a lot of Foxhole, i am really looking forward to getting into something like this.

Nothing comes close still. Picked this up back in 2001-2002 and had some of the coolest experiences of my gaming life. I'll always remember the Axis attempt at a seaborne invasion of England. I hunkered down in a freighter - went out and mowed the lawn - and came back in after a couple hours to find our convoy under attack by sea and air. I still play it on occasion, and keep up with the development. Really looking forward to what could be down the road.
hopefully 2.0 brings back all the players it needs to be as special as it can be ;)

This game... THIS GAME..... Nostalgia for so so many years I absolutely lost many days/weeks into this. You can do ANYTHING on sorties/missions/ambushes/air raids, and gather intel for raids. Unreal. I can not wait for the release of this version! ANyone who doesn't know what it is.... It's an open world do what you want with serious mil-sim gamers 24/7 and nothing else.

This was a great game not to be topped and it's coming back with unreal engine 5. I played it allot in 1999 to 2003. Graphics was fine. The world was alive perpetual sometimes you logged in just to see how the map changed overnight.

Dude, I never played ww2 online when it was huge, but I played it a little with a handful of people, it was my first tac shooter. Can't wait for the new one.

I was a day one player! It was most fun Ive ever had in war game. Played probably 8-10 yrs. My biggest issues were continually having to upgrade comp to keep up and bit of nerfing of lone wolf characters. Seriously considering returning now that im retired.
I CANNOT WAIT for 2.0.... in Unreal Engine 5.. same exact game just with a beautiful new paint job.. it 's really gonna be special!

You should definitely come back. WWIIOL is (IMHO) as good a game as it has ever been and is in a great place. I am enjoying my time in game. Numbers are not as high as they used to be but there are plenty of good fights occurring each day during the times that American and European players get on and fun skirmishes are happening during low population times.
Played 2001-2005ish. It was sick when it first came out and was kind of an open sandbox. There were tons of players and when one side launched an offensive you could fly along the front and see formations of armor moving out in several consecutive towns along with truckloads of troops. CRS made some controversial gameplay decisions along the way that chased off a bunch of players and in the end of my time, they had limited fighting to basically a few towns that had to be designated by the high command to be capturable. These were brutal battles, but often without much organization and it felt like a lemming fest. I did think the air game was well done but balance always seemed to be an issue as aircraft models evolved and when they put in tiers. I still talk to some guys that play it but it seems like the player base is a tiny fraction of what it used to be and that doesn't lend well to huge maps. The game was a huge achievement for its time when released but now I wouldn't say it's coming back because it just needs too many players to fill it out and reach that massive war goal it set for itself.
This is exactly the game in looking for unfortunately I play on PS4 and I don't have a whole lot of money saved up but once I get back to work and reminder I'm 15 I'm gonna hopefully get this. I'd love to make memories with others on a game like this

Is it truly open world? Can I drive tanks, jeeps, trucks fly planes freely without having to unlock anything? Or steal those assets? Can I take a small team and do something stupid like go behind enemy lines and fuck with enemy supply lines? Are there supply lines/logistics?
yes to everything.. BUT if you want EVERYTHING you have to subscirbe. free model gives you basic infantry weapons, lighter tanks and vehicles and a basic fighter plane... if you want stukas, tiger I's, fg42, mortars, nebelwerfers, arty, etc. you have to subscribe.. BUT your money goes towards the development into 2.0 AND you get access to the sister game Chokepoint right away... so if you are into WW2 gaming its a good deal ;)

i played from around 2010-2014, username pvtgump,101st airbourne. Some of the best gaming moments was squad night, 30+ 101st hot dropping on capture points or forward bases from the sky. Such a good time
YEAH MAN, that 80+ para drop followed by like a 30 tank column and the battle that ensued was so epic!
This looks very interesting. Downloading the steam version. What are the player numbers at the moment? I can see why they have a monthly subscription (since it's player funded), however many players won't be happy about paying £10 a month for one game. Can you turn on name tags? This has massive potential, though can a group of player funded modders build a game to rival a much better funded game such as HLL or PS? And if it's one massive server, how do varied ping times from around the world work? EDIT- gave it a go. The graphics need an upgrade before a decent amount of people get on board, I'd say, but I'm up for it!
Definitely give it a chance. You'll have fun. Despite it's quirks.
you cant really judge it until your dropping from the sky with 80 other dudes linking up with a 30 tank column and duking it out for a town against hundreds of other players.. it is something special,.... i really wish I had that moment recorded. it was right when the game came to steam and everyone was giving it a go... summary, cant judge it until you are a part of a big battle with a bunch of players. GOTTA BOOST THE PLAYER COUNT SOMEHOW!

No need to wait for the game in development, jump into the original game. The game is still running and alive.
I have been playing this game for literally over 20 years and have always had an active paying sub. Yes, it has some weaknesses, but it is the best game I have ever loaded on my PC and it has given me more hours of fun gameplay than any other game. It takes some time to get to understand the UI and how to find the action but it is well worth while. Also when you work out what is happening you get directly involved in making the action. The game suits individual play or play as a coordinated group.

Only STALKER Anomaly mod and this game have done dropping your weapon when damaged as far as I know. I would love to see this mechanic in Squad and Post Scriptum.
I am a big fan of there not being a HUD. No HUD makes it much more rewarding and immersive.
You need multidisciplinary designers for creating No HUD that works, it's really rare, and many hide not having the Human Resources behind the excuse of being the market average game based on gaming with info on screen, which is not always the case. However the average gaming is made for below 30, and instead today there will be more and more 35 + players, in 10-20 years there will be so many 50-60 years old players that will want this you and I say... (of course if we are still on Earth, seen what is happening between the powerful and the elites these days).

I think it requieres an intent driven desighn, with a design process that constantly refers back to the core goals of the game design. Something that is impossible to get from a AAA studio, where there is no consideration for what adding a mechanic actually means to the game, as it often can be damaging to the games core design goals. Oftern less is more.

I can tell you why Squad and PS DO NOT have picking up weapons or better yet getting them shot out of your hands.. because they want a tight squad based meta.. if there is the potential to pick up and pass around nothing but STG44's in PS it would make for a not very fun game for the enemy lol

I was originally aware of RnL, but I am worried the sudden association with WW2 Online might end up damaging the original drive of RnL (now Chokepoint) itself due to the monthly subscription. Because I am a Veteran account of WW2 Online, I dont have to worry about that paywall, but I am worried that this game may have an issue as a result.
CHOKEPOINT and WW2ONLINE will be FREE TO PLAY! however, if you want alpha testing access.. you need a ww2online subscription thats all. simply a way for those that want to support to do so, and they need alllllll the money they can get for this task at hand! ;)
