I had a similar warning/error lights to this when installing a new battery. I got the CEL, flashing cruise control, flashing drive mode with it stuck in S, hill assist and traction control lights all turned on. I had tried to disconnect the battery, wait, and then restart but this didn't work and I continuously got the same errors. I finally decided to take it over to Subaru and was informed that there's a relearn sequence that needs to happen. It's just starting and stopping the car between 3-10 times and eventually the startup sequence relearns itself and the lights turn off. My driver side automatic window function also stopped after the battery was installed and it was fixed by 1.) pull the window all the way down and hold for 2 seconds, and 2.) pull the window all the way up and hold for 2 seconds. Hope this helps someone in a similar situation as me!
thanks a lot!!! save me a lot of time!, it happened to me when i left my car parked for 3 weeks and the battery discharged. I tried everything, unplugged the battery, got an ob2 scan to reset the ECU, etc, but this simple trick worked like a charm.
Oct. 2019 - Tried Option 1 and it worked. Thanks so much!!! This happened to me a few months ago and tightening the battery worked, so I knew it was tied to the battery. There must be something tripping it, but as so many people are helped by this simple fix, I'm guessing nothing major is going on in my Forrester, which is a 2005 with only 147,000 miles. Thanks again!
Found your video, I have a '14 WRX that had a CEL and flashing cruise. Noticed in the comments you mentioned an intake hose was loose. I pulled the gas cap, checked and my intake was about 1/4 inch off its seated position. Re-seated, tightened, put gas cap in, unplugged negative from the battery. 10min later put the negative back on. Started the car, quick shut off, then key back to 1 position. Lights gone. Started car again, lights still gone. Thanks!
GOD BLESS YOU, SIR. I don't know why or how this works, but I'm about to start a 2+ hour drive and I wasn't ready to do it withot cruise control. This just saved me, thank you so much!!!
For anyone that hasn’t had their problem fixed by taking off the negative terminal, make sure your car doesn’t have two batteries. After leaving the gas cap off in my 2015 STi after only a week of owning it, I tried the negative terminal method many times with no luck. I even left it off overnight. Turns out I had an extra battery in the trunk for a subwoofer that I wasn’t aware of. Took negatives off both, waited a few and boom. Code gone.
I had this same issue this morning with my 2015. I unhooked my pos battery wire and cleaned the little bit of corrosion I had on the terminal then reattached it. This fixed the problem for me.

Mine is a 2007 WRX TR, nothing after market except wheels and tires. I've had this issue (check engine and cruise control) for the last few years and 30k miles or so. The battery reset always works. Import shop and Subaru technicians had no idea what caused the issue. I've had parts on the engine interchanged and cleaned, but to no avail. Every professional has told me that if the engine runs like it always has, then don't worry about it. One life long engine mechanic that I trust did speculate about a very minor miss in the engine. He said the miss isn't an issue until the computer senses the misses become too frequent in a given time period, then the alarms go off. So far the car still runs great, though I admit it has made me paranoid. I have not tried the gas cap thing yet. 97,000 miles and still shredding up the dirt, gravel, snow, and paved roads.

My 07 wrx cel... Started flashing at me yesterday on the way home. . As well as the cruise light... the car was shaking a little as well idle not when driving do you have any ideas?? Could it be spark plugs??
I have a 2016 WRX. Replaced the battery and then had this issue. This really works😂. Didn't at first, then I drove around the block and tried again. Random but great!
So this is what we call “Limp mode” or “Safe mode.” It’s the car’s way of disabling a lot of the it’s driving features. The purpose of “limp mode” is to allow you to still drive the car but in a very safe manner. The car can still be driven but keep a close eye on it. It is not until the Check Engine light turns red that you should no longer drive the car and take it to a mechanic, immediately. When your car goes into “limp mode” it is because something has gone wrong with either the engine, electrical, or fluids. It can be anything. It can be serious or it can be a minimal issue. You should take it to your local Auto Zone or O’Reillys to have the codes read for free. I know all the lights can cause anxiety so you can disconnect the battery for 10min and reconnect to make them temporarily go away. Or do something like in this video. However, just because the lights are off- that doesn’t mean the issue that caused them to turn on in the first place was fixed. This is why you really need the have the codes read to know exactly what is wrong with the car and take care of it when you can.
"until the check engine light turns red" lmfao. you do realize the check engine light is only one color right?? It doesn't go from yellow or orange to red when the car is in some extremely poor condition. Thats non sense, and this isn't limp mode, because you still have access to all power
@@peeposadboy So… you have no clue what you’re talking about 😀🤡 My 2018 STI CEL will be Orange in Limp Mode and Red during serious issues. Limp mode is just to get you from point A to B while the car can still drive. For example, to allow you to get home or to the mechanic shop. However, once the CEL turns red, that’s when you need to pull over and get a tow.
@@peeposadboy Limp mode allows you access to some power but no features. Hill assist will turn off, along with- cruise control, traction control, and the car won’t allow you to pick a driving mode such as Intelligent, sport, or Sport Sharp. Now that you mention it, I don’t see all those lights here so you may be right about that. This is not full limp mode.
I seem to be in Limp mode atm but on top of that my temp gauge is topped out and High. Any idea what could be causing that? I’ll be taking it in to the dealership to have them check it out asap
@@seansundita3605 possible low coolant levels, radiator not function properly, or even your 4th cylinder- could be a number of things. They’ll let you know at the dealership. If you’re under warranty- I’d go to the dealership. If not, I’d recommend somewhere else.
Friend, thank you, this happened to me after not using it for a week I ran out of battery I did not change the battery to a new one I got the same thing and a passenger sale does not want to go down, I have wrx 2018 20k miles
I would like to add, I had the same problem, and I checked the gas cap at least 3 times and it still wasn't solved. I saw a thread where it said wiggle your inter cooler wires to make sure they're seated properly, and to disconnect your negative battery cable for about 10 minutes while you do so. I did this and when I reconnected the battery and started my car, it was back to normal. Just something you should try if you're having this very nerve wrecking dilemma.
I have this in my 12 sti but on top of that, my drive mode selector is flashing and my traction control light is on. Anyone know what this is?? I checked the codes and it points to an air pump failure and an exhaust leak but I’ve had my air pump replaced and checked my exhaust, everything looks great. Lights keep coming back on
My 2015 wrx started doing this after about 60,000K. First time the dealer agreed to replace the right tumbler valve under warranty. After 6 mths it happened again, and the dealer said it was a glitch and reset it. Happened again and I tried removing the negative terminal, which worked fine. Thanks for the solution, i'm pleased it worked, but WTF Subaru??
I have same problem but mine , lights still on , went vacations 3 weeks, wen I got home I try to turn on my car , and the battery was dead, i jumped, and minutes later dash lights came on , some guy told me the car needs to relearn, but 3 days past , light still on , I call Subaru en they try to charge me $250 for the diagnostic,, glad the 👀 these video , i will try these ,,
I have the same problem with my 2017 crosstrek with 20,125 miles on it. I tried this method but didn't solve the problem. Should I wait for a couple of days for it to work? I don't have any more funds due to the covid 19 pandemic. Thanks if you can reply back.
This happened to my 2018 WRX yesterday after I took out the instrument cluster. I was worried at first that I may have messed something up while taking out the cluster but after driving a few miles, shutting the engine off, and then restarting it, the lights magically went away and I was able to start using cruise control again. I've driven the car a few more times since then and the warning lights never came back on.
Thank you. This worked on '16 wrx! Just had to turn off/on a few times for it to work. I guess doing this forces the computers to relearn some error signals or something like that :)
Ok...here is the latest update...it worked for me for two hours only, then the lights back again..I went to the dealer and they discoverd it is a problem with the positive battery terminal ..it is erosive and giving wrong voltage...this was a primary diagnosis...hopefully it will end this nightmare...still. Thanking you.
+DL Media I got the same exact cel again, this time I went to the dealership and it was the fuel level sensor, p0436 I believe. It sucks that I have problem with the car within 4000 miles. I think u should get urs checked next time when CEL pops up.
Hi there, I have a 16 sti with about 11k on it. Something very similar happened to me recently. I started to loose power between 2000-2500rpm. I pressed the gas all the way and it wouldn't accelerate, i had to let go the gas pedal and and press it again so that it would accelerate. Then I saw that my cruise light started to blink ( just this light no check engine light) and I thought that by pressing the cancel bottom will make it disappear but i didn't. So i took it to the subaru dealership. They said they find nothing wrong with it. They treated me like I didn't know what i was talking about. I know my car and I know there is definitely wrong with it. If you experienced something similar and fixed it please let me know or if you know any word of advise please let me know. it is frustrating
I'm not sure what's going on but this was my quick fix but it seem to fix my issue permanently. First couple times happened to me I took to the dealership they couldn't find anything wrong with it as well. But if look at the comment below according to Huy Nguyen his dealership found that the fuel level sensor, p0436 error problem. Hope it help and keep us posted. Good luck
So I took the car to the dealer to talk about this problem. I told them about your video. they said oh he must of done enough cicles so the error went away. I told them he did it 2 time I did it 2 times I don't think it's a matter of cycles. so I took it in yesterday. they got a p6060 or p06060 error on the computer. they couldn't reset the error so now they are gonna call subaru to find out what's going on as they never saw that error. any idea? should I try to put a stage 1 on the car? maybe if I reflash it my self it may go away.
+Andrew F I don't think that's a stage one issue but you should try If you re flash it you have to put ur oem air intake back in. I didnt get that error since then so I just didnt bother to bring take to a dealership to look into it.
So had this issue after battery died on my 2016 wrx. Did the whole open gas cap etc and it actually worked for me all the lights are off and I’m out of limp mode .
here is how i fixed it! ...replaced both o2 sensors on catalytic converter(200 bucks from rock auto) also removed catalytic converter(15 min- 9 bolts easily accessible) and soaked it overnight in a large cooler with purple zep degreaser(15bucks)and water. then rinsed out converter with garden hose for 1/2 hr and placed back in cooler of just water to soak overnight again. reassembled and most lights went off(you can also disconnect battery for 20 min to reset ecm and reconnect) except brake light witch took couple drives to go off on its own, been 500 miles and problem hasn't returned. welcome

Going through this issue right now and going to try! Thanks
October 2021 option 2 worked for me!! Thank you brotha 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Worked like a charm for my ‘17 WRX in 2023! Hopefully it doesn’t do it again though :/
IT ACTUALLY WORKED LOL
I tried it on my 18’ STi
Worked on the first try, thank you so much saved me a trip to the dealer
Bravo!! This one worked! Will check back again if it randomly comes back on
Subarus are so delicate wth lol
Hoy me ocurrió. Me asusté.
Thanks buddy (GreekSelector) for the advice; it worked for me.
My 07 wrx cel... Started flashing at me yesterday on the way home. . As well as the cruise light... the car was shaking a little as well idle not when driving do you have any ideas?? Could it be spark plugs??
An applause for you; fixed my issue as well...just now.
2016 wrx! This just helped me a lot!!
Wonderful solutions. The solution 2 works well for my 2008 Subaru Outback. Thank you very much.
I have a 2016 WRX. Replaced the battery and then had this issue. This really works😂. Didn't at first, then I drove around the block and tried again. Random but great!
What should I do if I did that but it didn’t work?
@@peeposadboy So… you have no clue what you’re talking about 😀🤡
My 2018 STI CEL will be Orange in Limp Mode and Red during serious issues.
Option 1 worked for me! Thank you! WRX 2016

Lights keep coming back on
Happened to my 2015 WRX about a year ago. Happened again today. Will check the gas cap tomorrow.
I LOVE YOU! you made my heart go Boom! It worked. I am now able to see my mom on easter Sunday because of you. ! Ha
My 2015 wrx started doing this after about 60,000K. First time the dealer agreed to replace the right tumbler valve under warranty. After 6 mths it happened again, and the dealer said it was a glitch and reset it. Happened again and I tried removing the negative terminal, which worked fine. Thanks for the solution, i'm pleased it worked, but WTF Subaru??
is it normal that this happens quite frequently? and is it harmful for the car
I have same problem but mine , lights still on , went vacations 3 weeks, wen I got home I try to turn on my car , and the battery was dead, i jumped, and minutes later dash lights came on , some guy told me the car needs to relearn, but 3 days past , light still on , I call Subaru en they try to charge me $250 for the diagnostic,, glad the 👀 these video , i will try these ,,
That happen to me today after work and what can cause that problem?
Thank you! My cruise control was flashing on my 2019 Crosstrek and the cancel button wasn’t doing anything and it stopped flashing.
If anyone is wondering, it still works 😂. WRX 2018 base model.
It started after my battery died and used my NOCO boost to start my car.
Option one worked for 2015 wrx..the important thing is turn off the engine immediately..thanks a lot ☺👍
I have the same problem with my 2017 crosstrek with 20,125 miles on it. I tried this method but didn't solve the problem. Should I wait for a couple of days for it to work? I don't have any more funds due to the covid 19 pandemic. Thanks if you can reply back.
Problem is fixed by using your method and disconnecting the battery. Thank you
Hell yes, you just saved me 100$ thanx man
This happened to my 2018 WRX yesterday after I took out the instrument cluster. I was worried at first that I may have messed something up while taking out the cluster but after driving a few miles, shutting the engine off, and then restarting it, the lights magically went away and I was able to start using cruise control again. I've driven the car a few more times since then and the warning lights never came back on.
this just happened to me today lol
you the MAN! just happen to me and i pulled over on 95 and it works!
Thank you. This worked on '16 wrx! Just had to turn off/on a few times for it to work. I guess doing this forces the computers to relearn some error signals or something like that :)
Today is 28-9-2019.....from Saudi Arabia...subaru legacy 3.6 2015...thank you sooooooooooo much...thank you sooooooo much
Ok...here is the latest update...it worked for me for two hours only, then the lights back again..I went to the dealer and they discoverd it is a problem with the positive battery terminal ..it is erosive and giving wrong voltage...this was a primary diagnosis...hopefully it will end this nightmare...still. Thanking you.
thanks it worked your a genius !!!
That might have made the light go away but did it actually remedy any problem with the car itself? Do you have an update on this?
+INeverWanted2010 Yea, I do have an update check this out ruclips.net/video/i-5JUOk6bQI/видео.html
DL Media thanks!
Option 2 worked for me thank you!!
It worked. Thanks dude. Dont know if I should get it double checked at the dealership or no
You could if you still doubted. But I bet they couldn't find a damn thing. It happened to me twice before I found this fix.
+DL Media right, thanks again dude. I'll get them check when the 3000 miles service comes
U're welcome and welcome to the Subie team :)
+DL Media I got the same exact cel again, this time I went to the dealership and it was the fuel level sensor, p0436 I believe. It sucks that I have problem with the car within 4000 miles. I think u should get urs checked next time when CEL pops up.
It just happened to my car!!! and my wrx is only in 5000miles.
I have 2007 2.5 outback without turbo and was check engine with cruise , and this trick works for me , author , can you explane how it work ???
Just wanted to say that this was very helpful
Dude 3/31/2024 just right now i had that after doing a hard pull burning a car lol and this trick worked still ✌️😎
Gas cap method worked on my 2013 outback thanks!
I got rid of this by disconnecting my battery and it happened again a few days later. Should I be worried?
I would definitely pull the code and see what's going wrong
Works like a charm thanks happend to me 2 times I had the car seen this and now I know what to doo
Tried step 1 on my 2017 Impreza Sport but it didn't work hopefully unhooking the battery works
THANKYOU!!
2013 XV/Crosstreck worked.
Top Man!
Thanks so much man , I had the same issue once my battery died
I have same problem on my sti, so could be the battery only To change ?
Hi there,
I have a 16 sti with about 11k on it.
Good luck
Tried this on my 2010 WRX and the lights didn’t go off. The test even said it was the fuel cap that was loose... so idk what to do
This worked on my 2017 WRX. Thanks!!!
hadnt turned on my wrx in 2 weeks and was able to get it running after battery died then this happened… gas cap wasn’t the solution for me
So I have an 04 Forester XT with same issue but this didn't help...
Did the whole open gas cap etc and it actually worked for me all the lights are off and I’m out of limp mode .
here is how i fixed it! ...replaced both o2 sensors on catalytic converter(200 bucks from rock auto) also removed catalytic converter(15 min- 9 bolts easily accessible) and soaked it overnight in a large cooler with purple zep degreaser(15bucks)and water. then rinsed out converter with garden hose for 1/2 hr and placed back in cooler of just water to soak overnight again. reassembled and most lights went off(you can also disconnect battery for 20 min to reset ecm and reconnect) except brake light witch took couple drives to go off on its own, been 500 miles and problem hasn't returned. welcome
