Baggio was superb midfielder/striker. Perfect at both
The beautiful thing about Baggio is that every ball he touched you feel he could do magic. Still, that foul on Vitor Bahia was a red card, even though Robby is my fav European footballer from all times
What a sin it was playing Signori (3 time Serie A top scorer), a striker, on the left wing, and Casiraghi up front instead?? Absolutely crazy. with Signori's excellent movement, clinical finishing and all round quality, Baggio would have had a great target to pass to and play off.
Haha fair to say you aren't the greatest fan of Casiraghi but definitely agree with you. Baggio and a few other offensive Italian players got the short end of the stick when it came to tactics.
Makes it even all the more ridiculous and remarkable that Baggio managed to shine in all those World Cups, despite not getting the same level of tactical freedom or the team being tailored around him, relative to other talismanic players.
Just goes to show his sheer quality and versatility.
@@footballsgreatest2645 Well said! I may have been a little harsh on Casiraghi. He was useful in the air, an honest pro and very brave. The thing is, he seldom got into double figures, meanwhile Signori was often outscoring him by two or more to one. I don't understand the logic of a, playing the leagues top scorer out on the wing and b, fielding a workman-like striker upfront (when there were many other, more potent options) when you're looking to win a World Cup.
@@footballsgreatest2645 almost everything Robby did at national team level was IN SPITE of the coaches...not because they used him properly (or at all!)....eg. 1990 (didnt start vs Argentina)...1996 (not even in the squad when he was at his peak at 29 !!)....1998 (not used enough, but instead a terribly out of form Del Piero was used)....2000 (not even in the squad)

@@fabianpatrizio2865 I'm sure that you're of this but I'll carry on for you....2002, at 35, still one of the best players in Serie A (Arsene Wenger said as much apparently), he recovers in record time (77 days) from an ACL/ meniscus tear to put himself into contention and Trapattoni ignores him (and Pirlo) when the midfield was desperately lacking creativity with Tommasi and Cristiano Zanetti in the engine room. People tend to focus on the terrible ref vs South Korea, but if we're being honest, we played terribly in that tournament, not too dissimilar to our 2010 side.

Just watched this again, and the atmosphere is wonderfully intense. The fans roar with excitement everytime Baggio gets the ball in the final third, and Bruno Pizzul's voice mirrors that anticipation. All the Italians were working so hard and were so focused on getting the goal (Maldini has a decent effort @2:25), getting forward in good numbers and working for each other, not wanting to let a single attack die. Great to see. But I think the nerves were telling with some of the finishing, as I mentioned in my earlier comment. And there was some overly aggressive play, including by Baggio on the keeper (I think he was going for the ball and tried to pull out- but it can't be comfortable having a grown man jump into you, even if it is bum first)! In fact he did quite a few fouls, and could well have been sent off. Mancini was playing some nice balls towards the end of the game, perfectly weighted, and I think the one @8:50 must actually have been onside because of the Portuguese left back; I can't imagine Baggio had run back from offside by the time the camera pans to him as he doesn't seem to have been running from that direction. This resolves my doubts about Mancini; I wish he had been at USA 94. I would have a 4-3-3: Rossi in goal, Baresi-Costacurta-Benarrivo-Maldini at the back, Dino Baggio-Albertini-Donadoni in midfield, and up front Baggio-Mancini-Signori/Massaro/Casiraghi. Mancio and Baggio could float wherever they pleased to best serve the attacks, Donadoni could work either wing in tandem with the full backs (Benarrivo was great at USA 94), Dino occasionally roving forward to shoot from range...

I'm glad Italy went to the World Cup, I wanted them to win it in fact, but looking at that goal now- shouldn't it have been ruled offside? Dino Baggio is not being played onside by any defender in that picture.
@@danyoutube7491 Yes, I agree, I don't think it should have counted, specially considering that the offside rules at the time. were far more strict and almost any play was stopped if any player was in an offside position. The linesman made an error and there was no VAR back then.

@@conorsmith8551 I don't think so as back then the offside rules was even more strict I think if anyone was in an offside position, but it might have put off the linesman I suppose.
Quite a good performance from Baggio, though his finishing was off the mark that evening (it seems from this video that all the Italian shots were a bit poor, apart from Dino's at the end!). It was nice to see a rare 90s appearance for Mancini for the Azzurri; of the little footage I've seen of him playing for Italy in that era he and Baggio seemed to be of a similar mind (though it was also the case in one game that they seemed to annoy one another with their conflicting wishes to be on the ball at the same time). Mancini had the vision and precision to play the sort of killer passes that Baggio could benefit from. Maybe in an alternate universe they both played at USA 94, though it would be as likely to end in arguments as it would success.
Yes, unfortunately Mancini and Sacchi clashed a lot as well. But I wonder whether they could've played alongside one another as they were quite different in some ways.

There look to be a lot of tension in the Italian side. That generation of Portugal were great, F. Couto, Paolo Sousa, Rui Costa, and Joao Pinto.Mancini and Baggio's passes r something. It is bad Mancini and Stroppa were not included in the final selection in 94, instead Sacchi chose Casiraghi and Berti.
