As an art historian I can say from experience that there is no substitute for seeing a piece with your own eyes. It was true for your previous project, it is true for this one, an it will be true for the next! Save yourself a lot of hassle everyone and begin with inspecting the piece up close and personal!

"Cathy groans in slow motion" had me cackling. My husband watches photography RUclips videos on the loungeroom TV. They are quite technical and tedious because I don't understand a thing that they are talking about. I've just realised that you are my version, but yours are fascinating because I actually understand (most) of what you are doing. 😃 Loving every new instalment in this project.

This reminds me of when my daughter had drawn her wedding dress and asked me to make it. We had often done this for Prom and other formal events, but this was THE dress. I found 3 patterns that had elements that she wanted and then tried to put it all together. SO much over thinking. Turned out, I only needed two patterns and some nice embellishments.
I love watching this so very much. Wonderful journey.

Something I do when trying to figure out pattern shapes from pictures is to trace the picture itself, then in another color, I trace in the seams and another color to draw in arrows of the fabric grain direction. I use this as an additional reference image when coming up with pattern drafts. doing this highlights all the lines and seams with how the garment falls so when I am looking at the references, I am not forgetting about seam lines and shapes.
Maybe for some, it might be a redundant step, but for how I mentally function, it certainly helps to keep my thoughts organized.

I don't have but two friends who have seen me go through this kind of process. The one worked with me on Renaissance and wedding gowns but is gone some years now. (I am never making another wedding gown. Period.) My other friend is a portrait artist and has been my best friend more than 40 years. And, while she isn't a sewer, she knows enough to bounce some ideas off of and get a valid response. It's where the architecture meets the art that can be so confounding. Thank you for letting me/us see that you have the same struggles.

  • @RaquelliBee

My instinct when you pointed out the diagonal seam is that the original fabric wasn't wide enough for the pattern piece so they sew pieces together and embroidered on top to hide it.
I'm a novice sewer. I can't tell if that seam is adding any like structure to the silhouette so that's why I think they fudged it. Like I do when I run out of fabric.
I love your videos. So informative. It is wonderful. Thank you.

I gave up quilting 14 years ago because I never felt I was good at it, I love quilts but just could not get them right. But last year my daughter gave me my second grandson 14 years after my last one. I made my 1st grandson a very simple quilt, a panel and a border. So I had to make my new grandson a quilt.
To cut a long story short, I took some UFOs out of the loft for practice and finished 2 and then finished a king size log cabin quilt top. All the time telling myself it will be what it will be.
I wanted to make a crib quilt, out of two panels, but I could not get it to work. Ended up making a single bed quilt, to make it work. Then decided to Free motion quilt it and taught myself Free motion quilting. Saying It will be what it will be. Then finished the baby quilt. It's beautiful I am beyond happy with the It will be what it will be quilt.
I then got another UFO out of the loft a double bed topper and have finished another quilt top, which I will be free motion sewing soon.
It will be what it will be, has freed me to actually enjoy finishing projects, they may not be perfect, but they look great. I have unpicked bits but only if it's obviously wrong from 6 foot. From never finishing to finishing things . The single bed baby quilt took me about 2.5 weeks from nothing to fully quilted and bound. I surprised myself.

I noticed with this coat, that it is a "Hodge Podge" put together coat. Whoever thought about this design, probably thought what do we have for fabric and lets make something and this coat came out of it.
That panel was probably they did not have enough fabric on that grain so they stitched them together and made it work

  • @killamoosdraree730
    @killamoosdraree730 2 года назад +2

I actually think you were more on the right track when you had the two front panels as rectangles. I would have then taken note of the approximate width of those panels to sort of determine how that side panel was "pieced" to conserve fabric.
I will try to describe what I mean: if you take the triangle that meets the back lace insert panel and move it so that it meets the front lace insert panel, you would have a rectangular width of fabric. By cutting that rectangular width of fabric along a sloped line you can rearrange the resulting trapezoids by simply swapping their positions (do not rotate or flip them, just move the left hand piece over to the right hand side) and meet the two selvedges creating that seam you can see in the coat. I played with paper and scissors to try and play with this idea. I noticed that if I moved the now left hand side trapezoid downwards, my "fabric" width increased a bit with only two smaller trapezoids at the top and bottom to be cut off and used perhaps in the cuffs or some other small bit. It allowed more room to create that curved hem while still conserving the most amount of "fabric". What this method also does is effectively allow for all of your seams to be at minimum a straight of grain matched to a bias which will obviously add stability to the seams. This would not be the case however if the front panels are not rectangles since you would now have a bias to bias edge seam between the front panel and the lace insert. The lace triangle insert would simply have to be sewn such that the straight grain side of it meets the bias grain of the side piece that was pieced with the two trapezoids.
You are immensely creative with your investigations, I hope you continue to play with this project until you get it just how you want it. Thanks for sharing!

I'm so excited about this. Not even a min in and I've already liked the video! Please one day finish a worth ball gown, I would have loved to see the details on how they managed to produce dresses so quickly and the different drapings on the bodice to change the look

Use velveteen or plush or some other similar napped fabric for your mockup so you can see how it hangs.
