Season 2 is so important. Showing who and how the drugs get into the inner-cities is so valuable. Those guys get away before a case is built and even come back to Bmore when the heat is off in later seasons because they play at such a high-level. They’re meant to be untouchable. These are masterminds in smuggling at the international level.
Also, the dock storylines about the death of the working class is even more prescient today.

    • @corbeau-_-
      @corbeau-_- Год назад +13

Rotterdam is doing fine (though it did become the 10th largest port in the passing of time). Even in the series it was the presence of a larger dock that formed the main problem. Manual labor is vanishing (it was gone in Rotterdam in the series, even back then, Sobotka's nightmare).
The problem in the US is corruption and lobbyism - it's what made them dirty, to cough up dough to get a deeper canal/dredging, etc. It's a race to the bottom, exemplified by Biden and Trump at the moment, I suppose. Money can't buy everything and greed tends to ruin all involved. Similar to the outsourcing of labor to China and the like leading to the sentiment of MAGA, or postured decency on the other side. Mayor Carcetti found out that you can't get anything done. You just kick the can down the road, hoping no one notices anything during your term - no matter how idealistic you start out. Eating piles of💩, day after day - until you just stop caring.
As for the drug dudes - most of them end up dead, jailed, or miserable. Like in the series. It's just that greed, pride and anger will make people fill the void, near instantly. Like in politics.
In the series you see michael not fitting in and filling in for Omar, Greggs slowly loses her morals and is becoming more and more like McNulty, Lester cares about results (while bunk struggles, but remains quiet), Duquan doesn't fit in and becomes an addict.
I often think about the blind men touching the elephant. Everything in our society is like that, we can't see the bigger picture and focus on what's at hand.

Well after 5-7 days of trudging through this, your efforts are not unappreciated. This is hands down an epic undertaking and I believe you accomplished your goal of explaining the most dense television drama to ever hit the silver screen. I've seen The Wire about 4-5 times from start to finish, and countless night spent rewatching a random episode or two. And I thought you made some really interesting insights, observations, and opinions I have never even considered or notice. It really is the show that keeps on giving.

I love The Wire and think that it is the benchmark other shows should be measured against, and as someone who has had substance problems I thought The Corner was top notch too, unrivaled! The bit when Nareese took Daniel's file I loved that you didn't hear anything else about it because it gave the impression things were going on in the background and the viewer should be smart enough to fill the gap. I only remember 1 other series that used elements of the story telling used in The Wire, although it was not as good overall, and that was Babylon 5, which was made to be a novel on screen and tried to be on the scope of Lord of the Rings. It was great at times and had ideas not often seen back i the early 90's, like a conversations pay-off not being until a few episodes later, which reeled you in but couldn't mantain it's high standards and got a bit camp. But The Wire perfected it so well that 2 decades later I can still watch it and enjoy it, and a 4 and a half hour documentary is just what I wanted, really top stuff! So thank you ad all the best for the channel💯👊👍
P.S, I loved season 2 and understand why it got some flak, but it was about the lifeblood of most cities through history, the river and port, and got the Mayor in trouble because of the light shined on the subject and with time has grown! Level with it is season 4, the kids and Marlo, Chris & Snoop were so good, the kids showing the fates of maybe some other characters plus the new, more ruthless ruler Marlo who's organisation was modeled on Stalin's era of purges, so, so good!

People link Namond to Royce, but the parallel between him and Bunk shouldn't be ignored. Both of them weren't hard enough to hang with the dope boys, both of them did well in school in their own way, and both are protected by their fathers (in Namond's case, Bey and Colvin). Namond even tries to persuade Michael to not be as reckless in a way that, personally, reminds me of Bunk chastising Omar for his influence on the neighborhood.

Awesome video! Just finished my first ever watch of the series and it's one of the greatest pieces of media I have ever seen. I regret never watching it sooner but i'm glad that I waited until I was at an age that I can fully comprehend the story and truly give it the time it deserves. As I was watching, I was constantly looking at Reddit and other forums about the significance of certain events and characters and found it to be one of those shows you can just endlessly talk about. The fact that it even comes remotely close to accurately representing real life in Baltimore makes everything more impactful. You did a great job of covering mostly everything about the show and what makes it amazing, and I found this to be a great companion content to the series. One of the reasons I actually gave the show a second try at watching was because I was interested in this series of videos, so thanks for that!

Around 8 months sober, far from the first time. I've always felt a strong connection with Bubbles, his story captures so much of the reality of addiction without ever feeling condescending. I know he's a fictional character but he reminds me both of people I know from the street and from rehab, as well as myself. His story gives me hope, seeing his sister finally invite him upstairs is such a simple and beautiful moment.

I love Bubbles but i personally didnt like his portrayal of an addict that much. As in, i liked his acting and story overall but... idk, i just didnt feel it. I spent almost 10 years of my life addicted to opiates obvs ending on heroin, and despite my life being relatively okayish for a dope fiend with such a long mileage at the very end of my ride (still had a work from home type job and my own apartment) Bubbles life seemed.... fkin great for a dope addict to me! Think about it; this mfer was never dopesick despite being a bum with no job besides snitching meaning he made enough cash to keep himself straight always, cheerful, always energetic, and most importantly HE WOULD GET FFFUUUUCKKKEED UP ON THAT NEEDLE BOOOIII like on that standing nod type junkie dance type fucked up. I wouldve been happy if i would nod off like once in a blue moon, otherwise it was just getting well enough to work and be able to leave my house to score dope if i didnt have my usual darkweb stash.
Considering the sorry ass pathetic state my life was in at the time, if someone told me that if i lose my job and my apartment and in exchange become a homeless junkie in Baltimore and live like Bubbles, i would be like hell yeah bruh where do i sign?
In some way i get that they didnt want to make Bubbles seem too miserable but cmon... its the wire, the whole point of it was to make it realistic as fuck: we love McNulty despite his character contained like 90% of being an abusice piece of shit to everyone around him lmao

    • @aw2584
      @aw2584 9 месяцев назад +1

In defense of Bubbles writing, as a side note, and on a contary i loved the portrayal of Bubbles once he got clean; how... awkward he became? So out of place and just weird; his clothes and the way he would interact with people while sober, so stiff - even durinf his speech in NA meeting. It PEEERFECTLY encapsulated that feeling an addict gets when you first get clean properly and try to adjust to normal society while having developed absolutely no social tools to deal with it, its like someone took your awkward socially anxious 15yo ass when you got hooked on drugs and dropped you into the future 40yo self with zero idea on how 40yo folks should act or talk like, because thats what addiction does, it stunts your growth at the age you got hooked on, and all you know jn life is to how to talk with other junkies, drug dealers and police but besides that theres nothing for dozens of years and then youre supposedly back to normal trying to act normal to people who dont know what methadone is or how to use Narcan... i can imagine some straight edge good Christian dude being dumped into a crackhouse and trying to fit in, with probably similar awkwardness. And that was a stroke of genius for me as it was never stated out loud, it was SHOWN but without pointing it out at all.

Great video, but I think you’re missing something about the newspaper storyline. It’s not just “revenge fanfic” from David Simon because he’s bitter about the print media industry, but an examination of how that industry was gutted - just like how American manufacturing/labor unions were gutted by larger forces a couple decades earlier (hence the docks being featured in Season 2).
I was in college for journalism when this show aired. When I enrolled, being a journalist was a respectable career, where you could make a liveable salary. Over the course of the early 2000s, the entire industry was wrecked by the rise of cable news and the emergence of the internet. By the time I graduated, every major newspaper in the country had slashed their staff, and it was basically impossible to get a job (I was literally chasing stories for $10/hr, before I eventually just changed careers entirely).
It’s a personal story for me, to be sure, but it’s also an important factor in understanding why it was chosen for the focus of the show (ie. it wasn’t just David Simon having an axe to grind).

In fact, I think I recall some of your original stuff on season 4 (about Bodie) and thinking I was right about that.
    Nope!
I can't help but give you props for taking the wire folks at their word and taking the show as seriously as it deserves; putting time into plugging into the show the way it demands its viewers digest it. And thinking about things thoroughly and deeply.
I think that shows incredible, and I do mean incredible effort and dedication to your work and analysis of premier television.
You, detective, gave a fuck when it was your turn to give a fuck. Natural po-lice!

One of the greatest series ever made. I do enjoy it even as a casual watch. It's my first time properly watching the show. But I'm frustrated cause I know there's deeper themes at play that i can't understand first time around. I guess that's what repeat viewings are for.

Personally I love the second season. I've rewatched the first three seasons together about four times, and every time I do I appreciate the second season even more. The pointlessness of the investigation is perfectly thematic for the series. Furthermore, it's an incredible world building for the show in the way that it shows characters in different contexts outside of the storyline of the first and third season. Also the seamless introduction of new characters pays off down the road. Lastly, the Tom Waits intro is head and shoulders the best in the series, change my mind.

Really enjoyed listening to your piece in the background. What I liked the most were the direct quotes outlying the parallels between characters like Bell and Colvin. I think however, that they mainly show the thin line between villain and hero, between delinquent and bona fide policemen/officials.
A little critique of your piece would be, that it is a bit heavy on synopsis, mainly stemming from your structure. Due to dividing the characters from the plot, there are multiple redundancies in your synopsis. I think a character focussed essay would have served you better, as it would have been more condensed and concise.
Really glad you like the long form content like PatricianTV though, his morrowind-critique had been my gate to long-form content as well. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing/hearing more from you in the future.

I'm now completely convinced this show is a proxy for Little Rock between 88-94.
    In order
88-89 is season 1 damn near verbatim. In 88 the CMB gang moved in from Chicago. They took over the towers in NLR off pike, the high rises on the River in LR, and the phone thing actually happened there. They did an FBI files on it.
BTW, the CMB was run by a former boxer, a college educated thug, and a hothead little brother. Sound familiar?
Hamsterdam. Look up the Little Rock Riverwalk history. Before 94, drugs and prostitution were absolutely tolerated there and where Argenta is in NLR now.
The reform. The River Market was created to get the stink off because after Clinton(Carcetti) gets elected, the story dropped about the River district open drug market.
Omar. Omar is Robert "Black Rob" Tenpenny. "Black Rob coming!!!!" and the song he whistled. Ill never, ever forget the first time I saw Omar. I knew who he was based on. Rob wasn't on the DL, but he did run a gay crew. He called them his "Special Boys". Hes in Banging in Little Rock on HBO.
Finally, ol Brother Mouzzone. Hes absolutely based on Mr. Charles. Military, Muslim Brotherhood, bowtie. That joke about the Library Card? Thats Charles. He's still alive. The cops wouldn't touch him.
Im convinced they basically used BMore because it was easier to sell. Also, LR was notorious for being bad to film because of restrictions. The same people that did Banging in Little Rock worked on the Corner, which is absolutely about LR in 88.

In some ways, the corner is almost better than the wire. You as the viewer can feel like Fran’s brother who is struggling to stay clean and on the right path in life and wondering how the hell its even remotely possible. Nothing but drugs and complacency it really brings you into that world and realizes how grim of a life it is. So much darkness and despair in the streets. So fucking well done by Burns and Simon.
