Just a couple of quick notes on this one. Firstly, I've tried to err on the side of making the rhythms readable rather than being overly precise and changing time signature every bar in the rubato sections. Secondly, I've chosen not to add chord symbols to this one. There are long sections where I don't think Martial Solal is really thinking in terms of chord symbols but more in terms of texture and 'sound' in general, so for me it doesn't make sense to add a load of very complex chord symbols that don't really reflect the way he's thinking. This was a particularly challenging one to work on, but hopefully it goes some way to revealing how he constructs ideas over fairly standard harmony.

Exactly ! I had the chance to go in a jazz workshop with Martial in... 1974 in Nice (France); we, a few young pianists, had the chance to follow his advices and to have some paricular courses with him during this week. And yes, you're right, he explained that he think mostly in terms of sound colors. He also said often that when a phrase came automatically in our hands, we had to try to play other notes...

@@PianoStudioNancy Wow, that's really interesting. Do you remember anything else he said? I really love his playing but I find it very hard to make sense of in an analytical sense. I'd love to know how he's thinking about things.

You know, we were so young and inexpeimented; he didn't really give us harmonic advices (I remember for exemple a tip : play a step above a diminished chord; for us it was great...). I don't know if we would have understand all his stuff. He wrote for me during one of these particular courses the all head and chords of "round midnight", (surely thinking that my playing was not right).
No, we was passing many hours to listen to him playing, all around the piano, looking at his hands and trying to understand some tips... very hard
I also have to mentioned, but it's easy to hear it when you listen to him, his great facility and pleasure to transpose everything in another tone...so if you're not fluent with transposing, you're lost (and we often were) 🙂 @@rhtranscriptions9665

This is a “monster” of a transcription!!! BRAVO!!! I haven’t heard Solal since I was a kid and my older sister played his recordings on our Magnavox. An extraordinary pianist with an extraordinary mind and creativity to conceive and execute this solo!!! Amazing transcription!!!
