For anyone still confused about the difference in file sizes, there are two concepts: 1⃣ There is still confusion in the tech world to this day how much is a kilobyte. In macOS, 1KB=1000B and 1MB=1,000,000B. Meanwhile, some Linux distros would report in kibibytes and mebibytes (1KiB=1024B and 1MiB=1024*1024B). In Windows, 1KB=1024B (but some people would regard this to be wrong). Anyway, drive manufacturers use the first definition, which is why if you bought a 1TB drive, it'll show up as less on a Windows. 2⃣ File systems like to store files in chunks, with each chunk size being powers of 2. For example, depending on how the drive is formatted, the smallest file size could be 4 KiB. If your file takes up 5KiB (actual), 8KiB on the disk will be used for storage (3KiB wasted). These are the two sizes you see in Get Info panel. Putting the two together, macOS's Get Info panel reports in KB/MB while the terminal tools report in KiB/MiB. Therefore, the actual size is 313,382,858 B = 313.4 MB = 313.4 * (1000/1024)^2 MiB = 299 MiB (reported by ls) The size occupied on disk is 315.9 MB = 315.9 * (1000/1024)^2 MiB = 301 MiB (reported by du)

If you emptied the trash and the file is gone, then a terminal command will not help. You will need a product like Data Rescue, which I believe you can download the free version and confirm it finds your file you deleted before buying the app.
hi, my terminal is gone. all I can see is : "Last login: Tue May 5 08:29:01 on ttys007 [İşlem tamamlandı]". (it means "job completed") I was making sth about bash profile and trying to save sth, I think i did sth wrong and terminal is not responding now, whatever I push. how can I fix it. even apple doesnt know, I called them. on the top, its written that " Terminal -- java_home --bash 80X24" and " Terminal -- bash --bash 80X24 " its trying to command sth. its blinking for like 2 minutes and then stops. it turns to just " Terminal 80X24 " thank you very much..
If I understand correctly you were adding a command to your bash profile and now your terminal window is messed up? Have you rebooted to make sure it’s still messed up? Do you have any access to the terminal or is it messed up every time you start it?
@@AppleNinja hi thank you for your answer. the first answer is yes. I did not reboot. I am not so good at mac. for last question, its messed up every time I start it or restart computer. I wonder if you messed up your Bash Profile. Let’s move it and see if that helps. Click on the desktop, then do a Command+Shift+G put in /Users/Username Here and hit go when the window comes up do a Command+Shift+. This will show hidden files. Awesome, man my macbook created a partition called EFI on my external hard drive, how do I delete it? /dev/disk1 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk1 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1
That is created when you format the disk with GPT, so that if you have it as a Bootable USB stick then you need it. To get rid of it you need to wipe the whole USB drive and will lose your contents, so back it up. To wipe it: 1. Open terminal app 2. Type ‘diskutil list’ and note the disk# of the external drive 3. To erase/format type without quotes ‘diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ NewDiskName MBR disk4’ disk4 is whatever your disk is in the diskutil list. Good luck!

For anyone still confused about the difference in file sizes, there are two concepts:
1⃣ There is still confusion in the tech world to this day how much is a kilobyte.
Therefore, the actual size is 313,382,858 B = 313.4 MB = 313.4 * (1000/1024)^2 MiB = 299 MiB (reported by ls)
The size occupied on disk is 315.9 MB = 315.9 * (1000/1024)^2 MiB = 301 MiB (reported by du)

Hello, how can restore my deleted file using Terminal? Thank you
If you emptied the trash and the file is gone, then a terminal command will not help. You will need a product like Data Rescue, which I believe you can download the free version and confirm it finds your file you deleted before buying the app.
"System Pref..." never shows up in my "top" output.

Why is my terminal command ends with # instead of $?
run bash, then run the commands
hi, my terminal is gone. all I can see is :
"Last login: Tue May 5 08:29:01 on ttys007
[İşlem tamamlandı]". (it means "job completed")
I was making sth about bash profile and trying to save sth, I think i did sth wrong and terminal is not responding now, whatever I push. how can I fix it. even apple doesnt know, I called them.
on the top, its written that " Terminal -- java_home --bash 80X24" and " Terminal -- bash --bash 80X24 " its trying to command sth. its blinking for like 2 minutes and then stops. it turns to just " Terminal 80X24 "
thank you very much..
But I have created a new account on mac and it is working fine. There is no problem about the new users terminal. but I want to use my first account. thank you very much again. stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/26036332 I also asked it in stackoverflow. you can see the screen shots.
I wonder if you messed up your Bash Profile. Let’s move it and see if that helps. Click on the desktop, then do a Command+Shift+G put in /Users/Username Here and hit go when the window comes up do a Command+Shift+.
This will show hidden files. Look for .bash_profile and move it to someplace else. Start terminal and see if that helps.
When I suggested a reboot I was referring to a restart of the Mac, which you did.
Let me know if this helps.
@@AppleNinja I think it works.Thank you very much. I removed it. Can I delete .bash_profile now completely? There are also ".bash_profile.save" and ".bash_profile.anaconda3.bak" files in hidden files. Should I keep them?
now my terminal says :
"Last login: Fri May 15 02:34:53 on ttys000

You leaked you ip!
IP’s are easy to get. It’s all about the security you have for your network and clients. I do not have any concern with that IP (which is old and no longer valid).

Awesome, man my macbook created a partition called EFI on my external hard drive, how do I delete it?
/dev/disk1 (external, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk1
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1
That is created when you format the disk with GPT, so that if you have it as a Bootable USB stick then you need it. To get rid of it you need to wipe the whole USB drive and will lose your contents, so back it up.
To wipe it:
1. Open terminal app
2. Type ‘diskutil list’ and note the disk# of the external drive
3. To erase/format type without quotes ‘diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ NewDiskName MBR disk4’ disk4 is whatever your disk is in the diskutil list.
Good luck!
@@AppleNinja Man thank you so much god bless you so much , GOT IT !!!!!!
I used it : diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ disk1s1 MBR disk1
