This is probably one of my favorite songs ever...probably top 10. I was a teenager in the 1980's when it came out...and an atheist. However, I was so interested in spirituality and in mythology thanks to Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, I realized the significance of 'Kyrie Elaison' as part of the Latin liturgy in Catholicism. What I love about the song is its deep spiritual message that is not about religion. It is about finding your path, without fear, guilt, or any other feeling but love, placing yourself in the hands of God, the Universe, or your own belief that you are "following your bliss." This has been an anthem for my own rather eclectic spiritual journey. Thanks, Ty...you made my night with this one. I am so stoked you loved it!

Yup, this was from the 80s, and before autotune. The 70s & 80s were the best decades for music. I was kid in the 70s and a teen in the 80s. This is before music went down hill like the 2000s and 2010s.

I was a freshman in high school in a small Texas town just north of Houston when this song was released. I remember it was a HUGE hit and we heard it on the radio constantly. It wasn't until I was converted to Christianity in college that I learnt what Kyrie eleison meant. That brought me a whole new appreciation for the song.
Richard Page, bassist and lead vocalist is a great writer and singer. After Mr. Mister , Richard went off and wrote and recorded contemporary gospel. There are a lot of religious aspects to the music of Mr. Mister. They're back touring again, and I've heard, back in the studio for a new Mr. Mister release that will pick up where they left off, keeping the core of their sound intact. They were a very good live act.

He has done several albums of more reflective laid back music and his faith (whatever that is) does sneak thru here and there but.... Looking forward to the new MrMr album. Mr. Mister hasn't reunited. Richard has only been doing solo performances at various 80s music events. Pat Mastelotto is currently occupied touring with King Crimson.

My kind of woman! I grew up in 3rd Ward Houston TX and graduated in 1983. My taste in music was totally different from about 98% of my classmates. But I didn't care! I wore my Def Lepard t-shirts and my Genesis and Journey pins on my jacket...proudly!

I’m 45, so I never got to go to a Queen concert, but still love them... and I know lots of reaction videos are for them or country... that’s awesome .. but Thanks for doing the videos with the artists I grew up on that are great in their own way, Mr. Mister, Bon Jovi, Poison, George Michael, Bruce Hornsby , Mr Big, Garth Brooks, George Strait, etc .. all of which like you say, CAN actually sing , harmonize and play... so glad a newer generation gets to hear, experience and appreciate all of this. I was a teenager at he time this song was released.. what I remember about this song was the different sound of the keyboard and the great harmony with a very catching chorus. I never knew what Kyrie Eleison meant until a few years ago, since we’ve been praying it a lot during Mass. It so happened that the radio station played this song and I was happy to hear again after so many decades! I was 20 when this song came out. I was in college where I was supposed to be a computer programming major, but I couldn't stay out of music class. The amount of time needed to studying math for computer programming and practicing and playing concerts in jazz band and marching in the marching band burned me out. One day, while trying to decide what I really wanted to do I heard this song while driving to work. At the end of the semester I left school and started working full time. Two years later I joined the Army. While in the Army I submitted my first novel for publication. It was rejected, but writing has given me the strength to keep going when things got really difficult. And when things got really bad, this song comes out of nowhere and I remember what passion really means and I start to get back on track.

1985/86. I was 15 when this came out. Great harmonies and great energy. I remember this on mtv and on the music program SkyTrack on the British sky channel. We on the European continent could receive british tv for 3 years now. This is better than anything Maroon 5 will ever have to offer. Classic 80s rock song. The titel does have some sort of meaning to it. Let me play the song again, always makes me feel good.
My head snapped the first time I heard this song. I would never have placed the phrase, Kyrie Eleison, in a rock song. I had not heard it since the Catholic mass quit using Latin.

The guys were all top professional session musicians that decided to do their own thing. I saw them multiple times, even Richard Page, the lead singer alone, their voices are the real deal. This song came out in 1985 and auto tune wasn't used until 1998. Page was a session player for Quincy Jones, and wrote and composed for Michael, Al Jarreau and many more. I got to talk with them, nice guys. This was the huge when I was in high school, reminds me of great times with best friends, it was part of our life soundtrack.

That atmospheric sound from the '80s is music being designed for the Walkman and Headphones era! This music was made to enjoy on headphones and still is enjoyable to hear on headphones and earbuds today! and also sounds great on surround sound systems!
This was a great summer song.. a joyful, happy tune and very uplifting. When it came on the radio you would clap along and shout it out along with the singer.
The '70s is where 'arena rock' was born. The '80s...it was perfected. 'Kyrie Eleison' means "Lord have mercy", and is from a Gregorian (monk) chant. Instrumentation was recorded first with a 'dummy' lead vocal. Backing voices were next. We used to do it with many people surrounding one mic...then sing it again...that's where you hear the natural chorus effect. Finally, the 'dummy' lead vocal was scrapped, replacing it with a 'keeper'. Keep up the good work...
Richard Page lived,breathed,slept music coming up, and had already had a prominent band before this band was formed, had been a backing singer to many acts including Madonna, was offered the lead singer told to both Toto and Chicago which he turned down because he believed this band would take off, and it did Big time! I loved this when it came out because of the perfect production and musicianship!

Richard Page is the bass player----he was asked to join two groups: Chicago, after Peter Cetera left, and Toto, after Bobby Kimball left. He turned both of them down----to do Mr. Mister. stuff. Check out the record this tune comes from, "Welcome to the Real World". Richard is on toru with RINGO STARR's all star band. (YEAH, THAT RINGO STARR!)..... Keep listening. PS: AUTO-TUNE WAS USED BUT ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. THE REST OF THIS WAS DONE IN A LEGIT REAL STUDIO, SOMETIMES DOUBLE AND TRIPLE TRACKED, AND SOME TUNES TOOK 3 DAYS TO FINISH. THAT WAS BACK WHEN STUDIO PLAYERS HAD 3 and 4 gigs a DAY. The industry has changed so much! Keep listening to the older tunes; no matter what genre. Mr. Mister was one of those very talented groups. Chicago, Toto, Mr. Mister, Genesis, Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire,, Mike and the Mechanics, Steve Winwood, those are who I heard in high school and college. MANY others.

This song was like an anthum for me in 1985. I graduated High School and began (what has become) a life-long career in the military. This song has Faith. It has energy, and it has the amazing ability to make you feel good, no matter where you are or what you're doing. I'm glad you discovered Kyrie. When the Orthodox pray this we mean Lord in the sense of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the One; the Thrice Holy One in Essence and Undivided.

I have heard this before, but never seen the video. Loooove it ! These guys are really lucky to have found each other because singing high harmony like that for a male vocalist is extremely rare. (Oh, there's some that can hit it for a second or two, but not like this, and certainly not change key on the fly like that. Loved this song when it first came out, you know there are songs you hear which take you back to a different time and place, this is one for me. It came out when i was in my early teens, such a great part of my life. Sometimes i really miss those days, as an old man now i wonder where the time has gone, i look around and see young kids that age and think, i was you not long ago, but it was long ago. I now have a daughter that age, but sometimes i am that age again :D
My son was a young boy then - we recorded songs to dance to at home. I was glad to have a current pop song with good rhythm and a reference to the Lord. Another one was "Ya Moh Be There" which I thought meant God was there. Anyway, memories of being a young mother.
The first time I heard this song, I was in a cab coming home from the train station. It was a Sunday, and I thought the cabbie was listening to a Christian station. He wasn't. I've always loved the song, from that first surprise listen. I was living in Germany. The cold war was still on. A couple of months earlier, I'd seen parts for Patriot (nuclear) missiles diverted through the town where I was living. This song gave me hope for mercy and a better world. A couple of months later my sister told me that a friend of hers complained about "the nonsense syllables" in the chorus. Sis explained to her the whole "Lord, have mercy" part of it.
I saw this band in concert as the warm up act for Adam Ant one week before this song hit the radio waves in California. They put on a great performance for being such a new band.

The bassist / singer Richard Page has collaborared with Japanese ambient musician Kitaro. He sang on "Caravan" which originally is an instrumental theme made for documentary "The Silk Road".
Ok darling, YES I loved this song when it came out in the '80s. I was in college for Nursing school and raising 3 little boys at the same time. I loved this song as it was an anthem of my heart and still is. Now I am old and approaching my 62 birthday and just celebrated my 45th wedding anniversary. I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW FAST TIME HAS FLOWN AWAY AND TO HEAR THIS AGAIN IS LIKE A TIME WARP FOR MY SOUL. This song saw the beginning of my career as a Labor & Delivery nurse, pediatric trauma and NICU nurse and now, the retirement after 30 yrs. I still love this song, and all of Richard Page's songs but this song holds a special place in my heart...Christ did indeed have mercy on me and gave me the desires of my heart. " My heart is old, it holds my memories. My body burns a gemlike flame, somewhere between the soal and soft machine, it's where I find myself again."
I totally remember, while skiing at Shawnee Ski Area in high school, they would blast this and other sweet 80s tunes from big ass speakers on top of the lodge. Whenever I hear this song, I fondly recall bombing down that mountain with not a care in the world. I love it!

@MRM... this song inspired hope, peace in a time of my life dealing with a narcissist marriage... Conflict between my promise to God to honor my commitment... or leave. I was also struggling with a job that was placing allot more work on my plate too. Actually, my doctor advised me to choose one or I would end up in a padded room (yeah I know it sounds extreme, but no place to relax and breathe..) Of course, I chose to try to save the marriage. Long story short, I finally woke up in a cold sweat one night, knowing I couldn't envision another 10-20 or more years in a broken situation. I did leave, but not until 1993. I still listen to this song for inspiration, prayer for guidance over the decades of my life. May "Lord have mercy" on all of humanity that asks and accepts it. ❤️🙏

Auto-tune or a variation of it was used in the 80's and 70's by maybe a handful of artists and groups, but it was rare.

Yup, this was from the 80s, and before autotune. The 70s & 80s were the best decades for music. I was kid in the 70s and a teen in the 80s. This is before music went down hill like the 2000s and 2010s.

I was a freshman in high school in a small Texas town just north of Houston when this song was released. I remember it was a HUGE hit and we heard it on the radio constantly. It wasn't until I was converted to Christianity in college that I learnt what Kyrie eleison meant. That brought me a whole new appreciation for the song.
Richard Page, bassist and lead vocalist is a great writer and singer. After Mr. Mister , Richard went off and wrote and recorded contemporary gospel. There are a lot of religious aspects to the music of Mr. Mister. They're back touring again, and I've heard, back in the studio for a new Mr. Mister release that will pick up where they left off, keeping the core of their sound intact. They were a very good live act.

Mr. Mister hasn't reunited. Richard has only been doing solo performances at various 80s music events. Pat Mastelotto is currently occupied touring with King Crimson.
He did backing vocals for Amy Grant but he also did backing vocals for Twisted Sister and Motley Crue as well.

I’m 45, so I never got to go to a Queen concert, but still love them... and I know lots of reaction videos are for them or country... that’s awesome .. but Thanks for doing the videos with the artists I grew up on that are great in their own way, Mr. Mister, Bon Jovi, Poison, George Michael, Bruce Hornsby , Mr Big, Garth Brooks, George Strait, etc .. all of which like you say, CAN actually sing , harmonize and play... so glad a newer generation gets to hear, experience and appreciate all of this. I was a teenager at he time this song was released.. what I remember about this song was the different sound of the keyboard and the great harmony with a very catching chorus. I never knew what Kyrie Eleison meant until a few years ago, since we’ve been praying it a lot during Mass. It so happened that the radio station played this song and I was happy to hear again after so many decades! They mentioned the definition of those words & I was stunned to know this great song had such profound meaning!

If you are Catholic it is Latin for "Lord Have Mercy" Its recited in part of the Mass.
It's Greek, actually, but you are not wrong. It's used in the Roman Catholic Mass, but it's the only part of the traditional Mass done in Greek.

I was 20 when this song came out. I was in college where I was supposed to be a computer programming major, but I couldn't stay out of music class. The amount of time needed to studying math for computer programming and practicing and playing concerts in jazz band and marching in the marching band burned me out. One day, while trying to decide what I really wanted to do I heard this song while driving to work. At the end of the semester I left school and started working full time. Two years later I joined the Army. While in the Army I submitted my first novel for publication. It was rejected, but writing has given me the strength to keep going when things got really difficult. And when things got really bad, this song comes out of nowhere and I remember what passion really means and I start to get back on track.
Richard Page sang amazingly well for a long time. Made their music so very special. Great band.

1985/86. I was 15 when this came out. Great harmonies and great energy. I remember this on mtv and on the music program SkyTrack on the British sky channel. We on the European continent could receive british tv for 3 years now. This is better than anything Maroon 5 will ever have to offer. Classic 80s rock song. The titel does have some sort of meaning to it. Let me play the song again, always makes me feel good.

My head snapped the first time I heard this song. I would never have placed the phrase, Kyrie Eleison, in a rock song. I had not heard it since the Catholic mass quit using Latin.

The guys were all top professional session musicians that decided to do their own thing. I saw them multiple times, even Richard Page, the lead singer alone, their voices are the real deal. This song came out in 1985 and auto tune wasn't used until 1998. Page was a session player for Quincy Jones, and wrote and composed for Michael, Al Jarreau and many more. I got to talk with them, nice guys. This was the huge when I was in high school, reminds me of great times with best friends, it was part of our life soundtrack.
I was just entering my teenage years when this was new and I remember hearing it in my sisters car driving to and from school, etc. brings back a lot of memories.

This was a great summer song.. a joyful, happy tune and very uplifting. When it came on the radio you would clap along and shout it out along with the singer.
The '70s is where 'arena rock' was born. The '80s...it was perfected. 'Kyrie Eleison' means "Lord have mercy", and is from a Gregorian (monk) chant. Instrumentation was recorded first with a 'dummy' lead vocal. Backing voices were next. We used to do it with many people surrounding one mic...then sing it again...that's where you hear the natural chorus effect. Finally, the 'dummy' lead vocal was scrapped, replacing it with a 'keeper'. Keep up the good work...

Richard Page lived,breathed,slept music coming up, and had already had a prominent band before this band was formed, had been a backing singer to many acts including Madonna, was offered the lead singer told to both Toto and Chicago which he turned down because he believed this band would take off, and it did Big time! I was raised Catholic and when I first started going to Mass it was in Latin. This is what our liturgy started with. So that is how I knew what it meant .Our Mass went to all English in the 70's.

Richard Page is the bass player----he was asked to join two groups: Chicago, after Peter Cetera left, and Toto, after Bobby Kimball left. He turned both of them down----to do Mr. Mister. stuff. Check out the record this tune comes from, "Welcome to the Real World". Richard is on toru with RINGO STARR's all star band. (YEAH, THAT RINGO STARR!)..... Keep listening. PS: AUTO-TUNE WAS USED BUT ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. THE REST OF THIS WAS DONE IN A LEGIT REAL STUDIO, SOMETIMES DOUBLE AND TRIPLE TRACKED, AND SOME TUNES TOOK 3 DAYS TO FINISH. THAT WAS BACK WHEN STUDIO PLAYERS HAD 3 and 4 gigs a DAY. The industry has changed so much! Keep listening to the older tunes; no matter what genre. Mr. Mister was one of those very talented groups. So here I am, 3 years late to the party. This just popped up in my feed (Probably because I just binged-listened to hours of Marc Cohn, Bruce Hornsby, and yes, Mr. Mister). This song was like an anthum for me in 1985. I graduated High School and began (what has become) a life-long career in the military. This song has Faith. It has energy, and it has the amazing ability to make you feel good, no matter where you are or what you're doing.
I'm glad you discovered Kyrie. I encourage you to look more into Richard Page and his work. He's performed with everyone from Twisted Sister to Michael Jackson. Solid artist with a heart and passion for music that inspires.

Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord Have Mercy, as others have explained in the comments, it is the response of the faithful to almost every prayer in the Orthodox Church; when we pray for one another, the priests and bishops, the world, peace, the sick and the departed. When the Orthodox pray this we mean Lord in the sense of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the One; the Thrice Holy One in Essence and Undivided.

Lord, have mercy. It is a prayer every time I hear this one. In my tradition, we say lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. But this song gives me feelings about all that. Years ago I never knew what they were saying. Now I do.

I have heard this before, but never seen the video. Loooove it ! These guys are really lucky to have found each other because singing high harmony like that for a male vocalist is extremely rare. (Oh, there's some that can hit it for a second or two, but not like this, and certainly not change key on the fly like that. ( I know, because I get asked to cover this sort of thing and most people can't do actual harmony to save their life. ) I hope they do record more material, they are really awesome together..

Loved this song when it first came out, you know there are songs you hear which take you back to a different time and place, this is one for me. It came out when i was in my early teens, such a great part of my life. Sometimes i really miss those days, as an old man now i wonder where the time has gone, i look around and see young kids that age and think, i was you not long ago, but it was long ago. I now have a daughter that age, but sometimes i am that age again :D

Before Autotune……. I love the fact that you can replace "Lord have Mercy" and it still flows perfectly.... One of my all time faves.
My son was a young boy then - we recorded songs to dance to at home. I was glad to have a current pop song with good rhythm and a reference to the Lord. Another one was "Ya Moh Be There" which I thought meant God was there. Anyway, memories of being a young mother.
The first time I heard this song, I was in a cab coming home from the train station. It was a Sunday, and I thought the cabbie was listening to a Christian station. He wasn't. I've always loved the song, from that first surprise listen. I was living in Germany. The cold war was still on. A couple of months earlier, I'd seen parts for Patriot (nuclear) missiles diverted through the town where I was living. This song gave me hope for mercy and a better world.
A couple of months later my sister told me that a friend of hers complained about "the nonsense syllables" in the chorus. Sis explained to her the whole "Lord, have mercy" part of it.

I saw this band in concert as the warm up act for Adam Ant one week before this song hit the radio waves in California. They put on a great performance for being such a new band.

The drummer Pat Mastelotto went on to play e.g with David Sylvian and in King Crimson when the tour backing band of Sylvian's including one Robert Fripp turned into a new incarnation of King Crimson. The bassist / singer Richard Page has collaborared with Japanese ambient musician Kitaro. He sang on "Caravan" which originally is an instrumental theme made for documentary "The Silk Road".

Ok darling, YES I loved this song when it came out in the '80s. I was in college for Nursing school and raising 3 little boys at the same time. I loved this song as it was an anthem of my heart and still is. Now I am old and approaching my 62 birthday and just celebrated my 45th wedding anniversary. I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW FAST TIME HAS FLOWN AWAY AND TO HEAR THIS AGAIN IS LIKE A TIME WARP FOR MY SOUL. This song saw the beginning of my career as a Labor & Delivery nurse, pediatric trauma and NICU nurse and now, the retirement after 30 yrs. I still love this song, and all of Richard Page's songs but this song holds a special place in my heart...Christ did indeed have mercy on me and gave me the desires of my heart. " My heart is old, it holds my memories. My body burns a gemlike flame, somewhere between the soal and soft machine, it's where I find myself again."

I totally remember, while skiing at Shawnee Ski Area in high school, they would blast this and other sweet 80s tunes from big ass speakers on top of the lodge. Whenever I hear this song, I fondly recall bombing down that mountain with not a care in the world. I love it!

@MRM... this song inspired hope, peace in a time of my life dealing with a narcissist marriage... Conflict between my promise to God to honor my commitment... or leave. I was also struggling with a job that was placing allot more work on my plate too. Actually, my doctor advised me to choose one or I would end up in a padded room (yeah I know it sounds extreme, but no place to relax and breathe..) Of course, I chose to try to save the marriage. Long story short, I finally woke up in a cold sweat one night, knowing I couldn't envision another 10-20 or more years in a broken situation. I did leave, but not until 1993.
I still listen to this song for inspiration, prayer for guidance over the decades of my life. May "Lord have mercy" on all of humanity that asks and accepts it. ❤️🙏
