I uhmmed and ahhed about this lens, mostly because of the size and weight. But in the end I was glad I got one instead of the 1.8. It's obviously stellar, even wide open and I doubt it's something I will have to carry very far. It's great as full body portrait lens but also that F1.2 can lose busy backgrounds, add stabilisation with the Z bodies makes for fascinating low light possibilities. Be interesting to see what the 85mm comes out like.
I actually bought this while already owning the 1.8. The 1.8, a superb lens in its own right, is better suited for street and landscape photography because of its more compact size. I still plan on keeping the 1.8...along with this 1.2...and my 50mm 1.8G (for my D3s body)...and my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 (which renders better images than the Nikon 58, but has all sorts of chromatic aberrations wide open and is manual focus). I'm a 50mm junkie, I guess. 🤣
The 50/1.2s is pretty special. I loaned one for about 3 weeks and had a hard time sending it back. It's phenomenal image quality but at the end of the day it is so heavy I can't see me carrying it as much as I would need to, to be able to justify the price. I used it exclusively for the 3 weeks I had it but my back didn't thank me for carrying it absolutely everywhere.
I originally thought I would get the 50mm 1.2 S as my “signature look” lens, but I ended up getting the 70-200mm S first and being totally blown away, of course. I love the zoom, but I have always enjoyed fast 50s and still want to go for this lens, and I think it will be an easier transition coming from using the 70-200mm as a daily carry first. If I so easily adapted to lugging the zoom everywhere, I think that pure specialness of the 50 1.2S will more than justify bringing it, and comparatively it’s smaller and lighter. Next stop: a bigger camera bag!
Nikon have a great heritage of producing some depth of field monsters. I have the 135mm f/2 AI lens from the early eighties. All of your comments on this lens are true for mine as well. Very heavy and adept in certain situations, but certainly not an all rounder.
Thanks so much maestro. I have order the Z6II for hybrid wedding and i wondering in this lens or the s 24-70 2.8. I try the z6 II with a 85 1.8 wide open (video) in a wedding last saturday and impress me. But i guess this puppy with a pro mist 1/8 could give a cinematic performance even just with neutral picture profile. I have the s 35 1.8 and the s 14-30 4. what do you think : the zoom or the 50 1.2 for make the difference? best regards @walocortes
It was done before on another channel. The 1.2 has smoother bokeh than the 58mm 1.4G (the 58mm tends to have busy looking bokeh). Also, this new 50mm 1.2 S renders creaminess like that of my old Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8D.
great video. :). I loveeeeee this lense. I also own the 1.8 version. I love them both, but the 1.2 is magical. I have used it for professional work and artistic work! Clients are in awe by how the images look! I have become a primary 50mm shooter thanks to this. it is heavy though! I use my 1.8 version for my travel work!!
Love you guys and I have watched all your reviews about the Z lenses and especially primes. I have only one question. Why aren't there any f1.4 Z lenses? My favorite of all my lenses was my older 50mm f1.4 G and my even older 85mm AS f1.4. I am still using my 50mm f1.4 with the FTZ adapter and I did get the Z85 f1.8. I just wonder where are the f1.4 lenses? I think they would be a great option and probably a lot lighter and less expensive than the f 1.2 's. I have valued you input and it has helped me make many of my choices on rebuilding my entire Z lens collection since trading in all my older F mount lenses. I am surprised that you guys have not brought up the same questions. Thanks again and as always I will be looking forward to your next video.
Another great review from GOW. I am so late to the S Lens party as I have only DSLR cameras, ie the D5 & D6 and now with the Z9 that I have I have just ordered this lens for my Z9, it will be my first "S" Lens and really excited to pick this up next week, it will be used for Events/Concerts, and weddings. Great content from you both, keep up the reviews as they are great to watch.
Great video! I was curious to see how the 50mm F/1.2 s performed. The bokeh is amazing and one of the best I have seen so far. It reminds me of the bokeh master lens, the 105mm F/2 DC. I personally would add the 105mm and 135mm F/2 DC lenses to the list of special lenses that Nikon released throughout its history due to the unique ability to control the bokeh.
great review, and pictures, but you didn't say anything about the AF speed/accuracy, as from a Leica perspective ( origin of the 0.95 lenses), these wide apatures are natorious for sluggish focus, or realy hard time doing it accurately as the bokeh is good, yes, but the d.o.f. means any focus mistake is clearly noticable, as the Dof. is 1" or less, esp. at these normal focal lengths!!, so Accuracy of the AF system is key, esp. when these are added to the 47MP Z7/Z7ii which resolve even further, so anything wrong is as blunt as a pie in the face!!
Love your channel ! Been following since the Zsystem was just introduced and you got a video released once in a half year 😁I am very pleased to see it's developing further. Great job! Speaking of the lens in question, Gotta say it has completely replaced most of my Z lenses including the 50/1.8 despite its size or weight. I just don't have any desire to put it aside even if it would be more logical and practical to get wider (14-30 is surprisingly my least used lens nowadays, and now I prefer to make a pano if I need a wider shot even if it is not always possible) or lighter (my poor 1.8) sometimes... So I consider the 50/1.2 to be the-only-lens-you'll-ever-need type (matched, although for other reasons, by 24-70/2.8S which is another topic worth discussing as it surpass every similar lens). Cheers from Moscow 😊
Personally and as an enthusiast Nikonian, I haven't used a 50mm lens for over four decades, but now this 50 f/1.2 S may very well be my 'kit' lens. Also, it works well along side with my adapted Canon 85 f/1.2 L II (couldn't wait for Nikon to release one since 2006). As for the Z mount lens trinity, I'm either getting too old for another round of buying it (as for my D3 back then) or waiting for the Ver. 2 instead. Maybe Nikon will follow Canon to release a 24/28-70 f/2 that I'll gladly buy one to replace my 24-70 f/2.8 G. In other words, I think it is too early to to build up a Z mount lens collection, unless one is a pro. 🙂
Great video, waiting for the Z8 and this has a good chance of being the 1st lens in the mirrorless switch. I hope the the Z8 is actually an 80 megapixel sensor.
I had a golden opportunity to get a sigma 35mm 1.4 art at my place of work for £312 brand new but I turned it down in favour of the Nikon z 35mm 1.8s. It was also slow to focus. Its also the same thing with my sigma 70-200mm f2.8. but I'll keep it.
Nice video. The price tag killed it for me but i guess you pay for premium quality. I am hoping sigma brings out art lens for z mount. Also, that lady presenter is beautiful...hshaha, she looks alot like this girl i had a crush on in my teens. 😂😂. Thanks for the review.
I nearly use excusively Zeiss lenses on my Nikons. No one asked me with what lens I took a particular photo. No one will ask when using this lens either. I am missing all the Nikon Z f1.4 lenses.

I love bokeh and I’d love to see the 50 1.2 s compared to 105 1.4 f mount or even the 70-200 2.8 s lens. Any chance of a bokeh comparison?
Thanks!
Thank you very much!

I'm torn between this 50 1.2 and 58 1.4...
Very helpful testing and analysis from you both - thank you.
I’m just here wishing the 85mm 1.2S would be announced, and that the 50mm 1.2S would be back in stock here in the US.
Would you get the z 50 1.2 or 58mm f/1.4?
Awesome video guys!

I would love to see a comparison of the bokeh and rendering between the AF-S 58mm 1.4G and this 50mm 1.2S lens.

Is this worth to invest for a intermediate FF body like D600?
That dog is a great model. He would make any lens look awesome!
Love the Vizsla pup!
Such a refreshing review,thank you.
Great review! I like when you speak separately -- not interacting with each other so quickly. You have different but interesting speaking styles.

Hi Frank, we brought this question up several times on the “Nikon Report” that we publish almost every week.
Was also amazed of the character of this lens produced..stellar👍

Waiting for my z9 with 50/1.2 as well!
An awesome lens, thank you so much for sharing this video 💐💐💐

Great review! You know what your talking about!
I really wish they'd bring out a 1.4. Be a lot smaller with only 1/3rd of a stop less.

Superb review
I've rented this thing for the whole weekend, I'm sure it'll live up to my expectations.
More info regarding the macro addition to this lens?

Dear lord. Video # 4 of this portrait beast and tubers aren’t photographing people!?!?!?
I had a golden opportunity to get a sigma 35mm 1.4 art at my place of work for £312 brand new but I turned it down in favour of the Nikon z 35mm 1.8s.
It was also slow to focus.
Its also the same thing with my sigma 70-200mm f2.8. but I'll keep it.
Bough this lens as a back up for the 200mm f/2.0 VR.
now i saw the books in the back, almost the same, and almost the same order :DDDD
Nice video. The price tag killed it for me but i guess you pay for premium quality. I am hoping sigma brings out art lens for z mount. Also, that lady presenter is beautiful...hshaha, she looks alot like this girl i had a crush on in my teens. 😂😂. Thanks for the review.
According to Nikon's lens designer, Harada, this lens is a Biogon type.
z 50 1.2s rocks:)
I nearly use excusively Zeiss lenses on my Nikons. No one asked me with what lens I took a particular photo. No one will ask when using this lens either. I am missing all the Nikon Z f1.4 lenses.
Exclusively... Mamiya RZ67.
Beautiful lens but too expensive and big for the average photographer such as myself.
OLED is organic Led not optical LED :)
🙏🏾
Heavy?
Not really. It is per design: More weight, less price per kg! .... or not? Hm!
I must have the sharpest 50mm f/1.2 Ai-s in the world…
big, bigger , biggest..... take a look at sony 50 1.2 gm size 😉 and blade aperture..eeeeleeeveeen
Really large for 50mm.
No comparing pictures with the Sigma????????
