I've lived in the North West of England now for longer than I ever lived at home in NI and I was living in Bolton back when Adair had his short stay there. Before getting kicked out locals knew him as 'that little Irish fella who goes barmy when you call him Irish'. I remember explaining to a girlfriend at the time why he might be offended by being called Irish but she kept saying, 'but he's from Ireland! He's Irish'. It's the same in Southport every 12th. The local bar staff get told not to call the Irish people coming in for the orange parade Irish because it'll just upset them.
Adair is from Northern Ireland which in his beliefs he is british due to Englands occupation of Northern Ireland. Hence the reason he would go mad when anyone called him irish.

I pointed out that to the vast majority of Britis if you're from the island of Ireland you're Irish, with all the stereotypes that come with being Irish. I could count on one band the amount of times over the last 20 years a Brit has heard my accent and asked if I'm Northern Irish rather than Irish. Being offended by that would leave me offended virtually every day.
Being born in a stable doesn't make one a horse. Adair is a Scots surname, he's therefore an Ulster Scot and British. Doesn't matter what some uneducated English people say.
