Solid review, appreciate your info on Filmic Pro integration straight from the manufacturers and developers. It's a well designed product but the software/integration is weak right now. I found that even in ZY Cami, the zoom function works but the focus does not work on the wheel. Biggest improvements in my view - 1) motors are stronger and quieter 2) no obstruction of ultrawide lens by gimbal 3) no need for counterweights even when using Moment lenses and filters.
I’ve just got mine, and I’m having the same problem with the focus wheel. Also, my follow tracking doesn’t seem to work properly either. It’s frustrating because it feels pretty solid other than that. But I might send it back, as those are 2 of the reasons I got it.
The focus pull ring could be such a game changer holy shit, I just wish they’d build a gimbal strong enough to support a phone in a cage so that way you could use a DOF adapter or actual lenses too

I just shot a full length feature on an LGV40. Twenty months of intense, focused work. I used a Hohem iSteady X for a lot of it, always with a clipped on variable ND filter and it worked pretty well. Not the app, but just for stabilization that gimbal was pretty good. And I pushed it to its limits. The app didn’t work better than my controls in the phone, so I just used the LG for all my manual settings. Shot 24fps. Greatest creative experience of my life. Can’t wait to submit to your festival when you open it up again. I’ve learned a lot from your channel. Thank you for that. Always looking forward to more content from you.
My kit, iphone 13 pro, Smallrig cage, Moment 1.33 anamorphic lens and Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 filter all weigh 373 grams. I was able to mount this on the Zhiyun Smooth 5 :). You make a great videoblog. Sorry for my english i am old date. Greetings from Poland.
After recording video with the Moza Mini-Mi gimbal, it was so frustrating when using a widescreen lens to always find the motor or part of the gimbal in the videos I was taking. I’m glad that this is not a problem with the Smooth 5! Great review!

Thank you for a great detailed review! After looking at it, I realized that I would not buy this stabilizer. It simply won't work with the Moment lenses and the SYNCO G1L radio microphone. iPhone 13 will grip the end of the case and will be difficult to balance. Portrait mode is very inconvenient to work with. Thank you again for your helpful work!
The Smooth 5 has a screw in mount on the right side of the handle to allow the attachment of an external microphone. Amazon has all the adapters you’ll need. I attached my Nikon ME-1 mic to the mount and use a right angle power/mic plug to my iPhone. The me-1 uses a simple short cable and the Smooth 5 has no problem with the cable for most shots.

Yeah the selling point is that you can use it on filmic pro now . I don’t like that filmic will be subscription but no other third party camera apps support gimbals
I've been using just a small tripod for the last year but I have developed shakes in my hand so my filming has been effected drasticall. So I started looking at gimbals months ago but I find alot of them feel cheap in the hand and the apps seem clunky and are hit or miss with android, and buying cheap always comes with disappointments so you end up not using what bought so buying quality but not ridiculously priced. I live in 🇨🇦 so the price is $209 for just the gimbal with tripod and $276 with the combo. Shiyun Smooth 5 seems like a well thought out gimbal with the button locations and having a joystick as well.

You do a great job with your videos and content. I have the S22 Ultra- I hear that the app is pretty much useless with Android phones - it seems like you should be able to have the phone connect to the gimble via bluetooth and have some basic functions. It would be great if someone created an app that worked with the phones.

Great review. So far the best option for big phones + filters + lenses (without entering the hybrid world). However, increasing the payload to 400 gr it would have given us all more peace of mind. And it would be the definitive gimbal. Hopefully in v2. Did you try fast action movements with a lens + 2 filters? (VND, cinebloom in my case). I wonder if the actual payload works only under more smooth movements.. Thanks for your help. Always enlightening.
I don't really use that sport mode or Go Mode for fast movements with a gimbal. If I want fast movements I use hand held. I did try it briefly and it reacted fine.
I had some issues doing fast movements. Too fast and the gimbal would switch from landscape to portrait. It's not an enormous deal, but I hope there's a fix coming for it.

Great tutorial and I’m sure once I work out how to charge it (Cable supplied has USB B one end with USB C the other?) Getting it powered and understanding the indicator flashing combinations would have been a useful segment😉)

Just wish the Moment lens adaptors for the iPhone Pro Max would ship already ~ I pre-ordered back the first week of October and just got an email that they have been delayed again now expected to deliver the end of December ~ I picked up both the Smooth 5 and the Crane M3 ~ SmallRig has a cage for the iPhone 13 Pro Max that takes the moment lenses but it is too large to the Smooth 5 thought it was fairly simple to balance on the Crane M3

Well Iphone pro max is 238 g while mini version is just 140 g . So that means for mini version we can easly put ND filter . ALso on latest SONY. Anyway on othr channels i saw video that we need to find out which ND filter is good for our phone model. Not all ND filters are doing their job

Banging review mate! You've earned a sub. Also, can you confirm that the app has been properly worked on this time. Last model was a complete disaster for Android phones. Looking to start filming again (using phones this time around) and the S22 Ultra is on the list as my main. Would be a shame if this one was also poorly optimised for android.
all 3rd party camera apps are having issues with Android phones, especially since Android 12. Samsung are restricting what is possible for 3rd party devs can support. None of the gimbal apps works as well with Android devices as it does with iOS
I don't know about Android Apps, but the iPhone app is a mess. Anyone considering this gimbal should download the PDF manual from the Zhiyun website before making a decision. If you look through that manual, you'll see that you now need 2 apps (ZY Cami & StaCam) to get the majority of the buttons to work. The manual actually specifies which app is needed for each button. The confusion of having to use 2 apps cannot be overstated. To add to the confusion, if you want a "rule of thirds" grid to appear on the iPhone screen, that's no problem with the ZY Cami app where most of the gimbal features are deactivated but, if you want to do the same thing in the better app, StaCam, it's going to cost you a $20 per year subscription for the privilege. Had I known all this before purchasing the gimbal, I would not have purchased it. The best bet now is to hope for 3rd party app support since the hardware is very nice, but the apps are horrible.
@@Part_121 Another dent in my plans for filming this summer. Studied film making, as a director/screenwriter, but now that I've finished I can't afford gear to practice my short films. Current mobile camera technologies, was a workaround to this, but I'll deffo need a gimbal for film stuff

I've just bought the Smooth 5, it's the first gimbal I've owned and I can't find a decent set of instructions anywhere to understand all different modes and functions 🤷♂ do you know if there's a proper instruction manual anywhere, as the gimbal came with a very brief 'quick start' kind of guide that just illustrates the gimbal, the buttons and how to balance it.
If you go to the Zhiyun website, click "download", find your gimbal and there you should find a pdf manual to download. Does anyone know why my audio is not recording on the Smooth 5 with an Iphone 12 pro max and StaCam app? There is literally NO support or forums for this gimbal!
With smooth 5, can we still use the iphone native camera app since iphone have a cinematic mode, and if it does, will the record button still function without using the cami app?
Great review :) I own that thing. Still trying to come to grips with all the features. I‘ll try the monopod extension for sure. Those shots almost look as if they were filmed with a drone. Hope Zihyun will add support of the Smooth 5 with Filmic Pro. The native app is a bit limited in terms of quality.
I’ve never owned a gimbal and just bought this, are you having an issues or times where it’ll kind of spin weirdly and beep? Maybe I’m just not using it correctly
@@loganweinstein It’s essential you balance it near perfectly when the gimbal is not powered up yet. Take your time with it. Your issue sounds like the motors have to compensate too much weight at times due to a faulty balancing.
Just a question, when you use the zoom button and start at 1x, does it switch to the secondary zoomlens when passing 2x (or 3x for samsung phones) or does it stay on the main lens and just crop the image while zooming?

Hello , excellent video, I have a query, I have tried to find the option from the gimbal to be able to change the "video recording" option to take a photo, I saw in the video that you turned the wheel, but nevertheless it does not work for me , and it is a bit inconvenient to have to change the option from the mobile. please help me.
I still don't know if I should get this one or the DJI om6, to go with my pixel 6 pro. I like that this one can go all directions. Also the payload is pretty big. But it does not seem to be as quick to use as the DJI one...
I bought this gimbal specifically so I could change modes with the buttons rather than having to go into the app. Unfortunately the mode lights are so dim on the gimbal that when I'm outside in daylight it's impossible to see what mode the gimbal is in or even if the gimbal is turned on or off. This seems like a flaw that should have been mentioned in the review.
I haven't seen one youtuber yet to actually say what do the different modes do.. you all say follow mode, pan follow lock mode etc. But what do they do? What do they mean? When I'm filming what happens when I use them?

the iPhone 12 Pro Max plus extras I tested here is heavier than the 13 Pro Max plus Polarpro. If you want more room to add more then the M3 would have you covered. I will have a review out in the next few days

Best point made here was the gimbal obscures the preview but that this is better than having it in the recording. Thank you for clarifying this.

Banging review mate! You've earned a sub. Also, can you confirm that the app has been properly worked on this time. Last model was a complete disaster for Android phones. Looking to start filming again (using phones this time around) and the S22 Ultra is on the list as my main. Would be a shame if this one was also poorly optimised for android.
all 3rd party camera apps are having issues with Android phones, especially since Android 12. Samsung are restricting what is possible for 3rd party devs can support. None of the gimbal apps works as well with Android devices as it does with iOS
@@SiHorrocks that's disheartening. The S22 offers so much more than iPhone. What was your experience like, with you S20?
@@0_iAlmighty_0 I have the Note20 Ultra which is still great for filmmaking. But the gimbal apps are more limited on it
I don't know about Android Apps, but the iPhone app is a mess. Anyone considering this gimbal should download the PDF manual from the Zhiyun website before making a decision. If you look through that manual, you'll see that you now need 2 apps (ZY Cami & StaCam) to get the majority of the buttons to work. The manual actually specifies which app is needed for each button. The confusion of having to use 2 apps cannot be overstated. To add to the confusion, if you want a "rule of thirds" grid to appear on the iPhone screen, that's no problem with the ZY Cami app where most of the gimbal features are deactivated but, if you want to do the same thing in the better app, StaCam, it's going to cost you a $20 per year subscription for the privilege. Had I known all this before purchasing the gimbal, I would not have purchased it. The best bet now is to hope for 3rd party app support since the hardware is very nice, but the apps are horrible.
@@Part_121 Another dent in my plans for filming this summer. Studied film making, as a director/screenwriter, but now that I've finished I can't afford gear to practice my short films. Current mobile camera technologies, was a workaround to this, but I'll deffo need a gimbal for film stuff

Great video! I've just bought the Smooth 5, it's the first gimbal I've owned and I can't find a decent set of instructions anywhere to understand all different modes and functions 🤷♂ do you know if there's a proper instruction manual anywhere, as the gimbal came with a very brief 'quick start' kind of guide that just illustrates the gimbal, the buttons and how to balance it.

So I bought this and it doesn't keep the roll axis stable. it wobbles back and forth. Normal> Defective? Using an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Does anyone know why my audio is not recording on the Smooth 5 with an Iphone 12 pro max and StaCam app? There is literally NO support or forums for this gimbal!

With smooth 5, can we still use the iphone native camera app since iphone have a cinematic mode, and if it does, will the record button still function without using the cami app?
Great review :) I own that thing. Still trying to come to grips with all the features. I‘ll try the monopod extension for sure. Those shots almost look as if they were filmed with a drone.
Hope Zihyun will add support of the Smooth 5 with Filmic Pro. The native app is a bit limited in terms of quality.
I’ve never owned a gimbal and just bought this, are you having an issues or times where it’ll kind of spin weirdly and beep? Maybe I’m just not using it correctly

@@loganweinstein It’s essential you balance it near perfectly when the gimbal is not powered up yet. Take your time with it. Your issue sounds like the motors have to compensate too much weight at times due to a faulty balancing.
Looks like Filmic Pro is a reality for Smooth 5....
Just a question, when you use the zoom button and start at 1x, does it switch to the secondary zoomlens when passing 2x (or 3x for samsung phones) or does it stay on the main lens and just crop the image while zooming?
Samsung phones do not allow access to the tele lenses, to 3rd party apps, or even with their own Pro mode

But I would like to know if I'm using Samsung Note 10 lite, Would I able to get all the features of Smooth 5 on the Gimbal as well as the apps function properly? As most of the reviews was made with iPhone, so I'm wondering the Smooth 5 will actually good for Android phone.

I still don't know if I should get this one or the DJI om6, to go with my pixel 6 pro.
I like that this one can go all directions. Also the payload is pretty big.
But it does not seem to be as quick to use as the DJI one...

I bought this gimbal specifically so I could change modes with the buttons rather than having to go into the app. Unfortunately the mode lights are so dim on the gimbal that when I'm outside in daylight it's impossible to see what mode the gimbal is in or even if the gimbal is turned on or off. This seems like a flaw that should have been mentioned in the review.
If I'd encountered that problem I would have mentioned it
I haven't seen one youtuber yet to actually say what do the different modes do.. you all say follow mode, pan follow lock mode etc. But what do they do? What do they mean? When I'm filming what happens when I use them?

Thanks for the review. Can you pls advise me if this gimbal can take the load of iPhone 13 pro max with Polarpro litechaser case and vnd filter? I am worried that this can be too heavy for it?
If so, I either need to change the gimbal, would M3 do?

the iPhone 12 Pro Max plus extras I tested here is heavier than the 13 Pro Max plus Polarpro. If you want more room to add more then the M3 would have you covered. I will have a review out in the next few days
