- When Metal Detecting at a 1700's era farm we usually have a general idea of what we might find, at least in a broad sense. There's going to be a good chance for flat buttons because they were so easily lost and were wore on everyone's person back then. Old coins can be found almost anywhere, clothing buckles, horse tack, old bullets, of course trash mixed in; but we find a lot of the same kind of stuff, just interesting variations of it. But sometimes we'll find something at these old farms that's completely unexpected and those days are often the most magical and memorable. Metal Detecting is a hobby of mysteries, and every signal you get could be something completely awesome or unexpected, and once you get a taste of that it's hard to spit it out.

Soon as I saw the ring, I knew what it was. Looked very much like mine-class of '71 Archbishop Molloy HS in NY.
Regarding the "key knob," I think you add a wood handle and open bottles with it.

I believe they still have Esso stations in Canada. At least they did when I was a kid.
I graduated in 1978. I lost my class ring sometime in the 1980s. This year(2022) I was contacted on Facebook. My ring was found in a jewelry box of a lady who passed. A quick investigation of the 1978 yearbook identified me and the people contacted me. The ring wasn’t found metal detecting as far as I know. It was in good shape and didn’t appear to have been in the ground. They mailed it to me and I can now leave it to my son (only child) when I’m gone. No she wasn’t an old love interest.

I believe that lead seal has something to do with shipping over the Railroads. PRR is probably the Pennsylvania Rail Road and Philadelphia was it's final destination. I have found several in south Jersey with PRR to the TRR which is the old southern Tuckerton Rail Road line and another find is a shipping tag that says Penn RR -Tuckerton Rail Road. It's a large brass tag numbered 002. Sooo close to being the very first tag manufactured from O'Toole's Tag Co. Circa 1878. Then too far away I found an old button that says Conductor on it back marked by a button maker in Philly from the 1870's so the dates are pretty consistent. The old Tuckerton line closed in 1935 but the Penn line probably still exists but I don't things are shipped with bag seals anymore today lol. My brother owns an early farm home and property in Tuckerton that's literally 2 blocks from the old Tuckerton train station. So I think that might be a bag seal that was shipped on the Penn RR line. The other side might be from the city or station it left from heading to Philly. It would be nice if it were like the B&O or another well known line. Or vice versa although I am guessing it's destination was Philly being where the school ring is from that Doug found. If I remember right one of you guys found something marked CRR which I'm pretty sure is from the Central Rail Road. I think you guys found parts to a brass cabinet type lock that day and I had thought it was from a half door that's used on the lower half in the ticket booth area of the old station.

Sorry about getting out of hand with the essays. I'm recovering from a pretty bad crush injury and I barely got to hunt the last 2 years so I have down time to research and study things. And as I watch everyone digging these things it's torturing me to see so many common finds because of my location (America lol). I wouldn't ever mention anything like site locations even if I thought I recognized a farm field or say a church or something. You know they all look a like lol. I wouldn't want anyone doing it to me and having other people hijack someone's site. Hopefully by next spring if I'm walking good I'll be detecting and being it's a small world who knows maybe we might cross paths. I'll be the hippie with a limp lol I have friends in real estate and others who remodel high and homes and I can get some good permissions from South Jersey to Colts Neck and from the shore to West Chester Pa. even as far out to Paoli so maybe if you guys are slow one day we could do a hunt. I mean I have no clue where you guys are I'm just guessing because the junk you guys dig looks like the same can slaw junk I dig so I just assumed it has be the proximity wink, wink.
Keep up the good finds it's helping me heal and want to get back out there. At least mentally anyway
