  • Van Halen’s rip-roaring “Panama” from their classic album 1984 is a song about a car, and a girl, and it represents a joyful, pedal-to-the-metal breakout moment for the band just before frontman David Lee Roth left to find his own groove on another track. Take a ride through the history of this song in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast.

I love playing VAN HALEN in my Mustang, I still have my cassette version of 1984 from high school, in 1984, but it sounds better now on CD.

That's amazing that you've kept it so long, and back then I loved smelling the cassettes after playing for some weird reason it was nostalgic. I always play Van Halen loud in my Ford Taurus

I love it when musicians hear sounds in their heads and interpret those sounds for us on their instruments. Rest In Peace Eddie, your influence on the guitar lives on, thank you for the memories.

Great pod Janda. So many great lines in this song and you’ve done a super job distilling their essence as well as placing VH in the US rock history !

Great breakdown, Janda. Tell Christian it sounded like he was making his guitar pay for everything that pisses him off!

Their US Festival set was the bomb. It's THEM. "I forgot the f---ing words"-DLR. When it's still 100 degrees at 10:30pm, and you've been partying all day, what else to expect? Lol.
