Mr Frisky I get what your saying! But Gazza was never a standby bench player!... even later in his career when his fitness wasn’t as strong!,, for the most he started a game to pump life into the match and make things happen from the get go!,, yes, he was intimidating and was a vital tool from the first minute! Glenn hoddle was and still is a superstitious and religious nutcase that should have never been offered the job!
@iancolley3791 lots of prem clubs wanted him but he chose rangers because he didn't want to be under the spotlight so much up in Scotland. He was sick of all the gazzamania when he was playing at Lazio.
I still think it was a colossal mistake not to take Gascoigne to the 98 World Cup. I know he was behaving badly at the time, but you can't leave someone of that talent out of the squad. I swear England would have gone much further in the tournament with him
It's true! Gazza was fit and ready to play for both 90 & 96, both times we were very unlucky not to get to the final, both of which I think we would've won. When he was out injured we failed to even qualify for 94. It's a shame he was so reckless, after that F.A cup semi final injury he was never really the same again. To think, he should've been sent off just before that too.
In the past 30 years we have had very good players - Ferdinand, Becks, Gerrard, Barnes, etc some truly world class players - Shearer, Lineker, Hoddle and Robson but only 1 player could walk on the pitch and know he was the best player on that pitch - no matter who we played and for 12 months to 2 years Gazza was the best player on the planet.
@Maxwell Boyne From WC 90 to the 91 cup final - he was unplayable. Name a better player during that period in world football. To be honest he was at his most consistent at Rangers but will never get any credit as its the Scottish league even though at that time it was a decent comp and Rangers did well in Europe.
@@ronaldfinch7420 Let's face it, if you were playing a WC final and you had Shearer, Lineker and Rooney to play in the 2 striker positions then Rooney would be on the bench.
Thing about having a player like Gazza - every team is worried about him, so it frees up so much space for others. It’s deadly, even when he’s not doing much!
Glenn Hoddle will always be remembered for 2 things - firstly Not taking Gazza to the 98 World Cup, and secondly for being a good footballer. Gazza was pheonominal, before and after his cruciate injury, sensational player and the best midfielder I've ever seen in an England shirt.
They do say Hoddle used to show players up on the training pitch when he was a manager as even after retirement he was still better than any of the England squad - so maybe his ego didn't like the fact that Gazza was better than he was.
@@mrfrisky2997 That's a great point👍🏻 for the same reason George Best snubbed Gerd Muller in the NASL. Gerd was a goal machine and best didn't like it. Best wishes to you
Is Stuart Pearce seriously saying that Gazza was better than Bobby Charlton . Bobby Charlton won the world cup and not only that was the player of the tournament outshining two the greatest players to ever play the game . Although gazza was one of the better players at the 90 world cup . Mathias was head shoulders above any other player . It was such a poor and low scoring world cup that afterwards they brought in the back pass rule. As well as that none of the worlds best showed up apart from Mathias. Stojkovic. Maradonna, Guilt, Van Basten and Rijkaard all had poor tournaments. Maradonna had a poor tournament but still managed to make it in to the all star team which goes to show how bad the tournament actually was
That is not what he said. He said he was the greatest talent HE had played with. To be fair gazza in his short prime was immense and far more skillful than Charlton could ever be. Did he have the best career or was he the best England player ever? No as he wasted he talent. He is without a doubt the best English talent of all time.
Also he played Mathias off the park in the semi final. At his best Gascoigne was as good as any midfielder on the planet between 1990 and 1992. If he had joined a club outside of London in 1988 like Man U or Nottingham Forest can you seriously imagine how good Ferguson or Clough would have made him. Either would have put him on the right path.
Bobby Charlton was the all time record goal scorer for England even though he played in midfield . Let that sink in . Gazza scored how many for England. Also the kaiser believes bobby charlton was the best player he ever played against . This is a man who played against cryuff, pele, eusebio etc. Leeds legend john giles says bobby was the best player he played against . Giles played against all the ablove plus george best . His team mate jimmy greaves reckons bobby was the best playmaker he has ever seen . The list of tributes to bobby's greatest goes on and on. Unfortunately a common misception about Bobby is that he had just a good shot on him . He was such more than that . He was a great passer, dribbler passer , pace , football brain the lot . If you want a comparison he was a mixture of gazza and scholes and better than both . Might i add bobby won a ballon dor , world cup and the european cup . Gazza won how much . An fa cup and a young player of the year award . Gazza wasn't fit too lace Bobby's boots . Grow up!.
Well not sure it was all down to Gazza I think he was surrounded by some great players, but anyone could see what winning meant to Gazza and Pearce, these guys didn't value coming second place.
Technically the best player England has produced, jack grealish is the closest to him in terms of technical ability, ball control, dribble, assist and finish.
Never seen scholes dribble passed anyone lol he was more passing and shooting. Too early to talk about Grealish, hasn’t proved on international level yet. Gazza is the most natural dribbler England have ever had! Only other English player to get passed multiple defenders is Owen but not because of skill my guy at his peak had pure lightning pace⚡️
Sorry but that's bollocks. Grealish is overrated and doesn't even come close, he just seems to fall over all the time and refs seem to love him and give him free kicks. Foden and Mount are way better.
He wasnt the same player after his 1991 cup final injury and he should have signed for Man Utd instead of Spurs. Fergie could of got the best out of him and kept him out of trouble.
stuart pearce just being diplomatic not wanting to rock the boat? erm never did get the gazza thing...deluded overated media clown and not fit to wipe the boots of of players like pearce hoddle keegan and so on....

Got a lot of respect for Stuart Pearce, especially after he had the courage to take and put away that penalty, for me one footballs great moments
100% agree ....one of footballs great moments
Cmoooon.
Football did come home that day.
Great tournament.
"that's why England got to 2 semi finals, because of Gascoigne". Such an honest and humble comment from such a great player.
neil yep!... shame on hoddle 98! What a waste of an opportunity!
@@Drizzle600 Yes, even if Gazza was on the bench in 98. He would have intimidated the opposition and what a player to bring on if you needed a spark.

Stuart Pearce is such a splendid bloke.
Heart of a lion
Nice bloke for sure 😊
For me Gazza was at his absolute peak when he was at Rangers, I got to watch it every week and he was sublime. What a privilege.
Yeah, I've heard a lot of Rangers' fans who put Gazza ahead of Brian Laudrup. Great player!
incorrect. he was at his best 90-91 at spurs. he just appeared better at rangers because its a pub league
😂😂😂😂😂, what a stupid comment, he was no where near his best at rangers, otherwise he would of been playing at a much better standard

Its depressing just thinking about it. What a player
Yes, it still bothers me now that he didn't get picked for that WC.
Yeah I remember at the time it just seemed ridiculous. I mean we all new whatever condition he was in, he would bring it to the biggest stage.
Still not over that.

The most genuine warmth from Stuart to wards Gazza, not just as a footballer but as a man.
You’d struggle to get him off the training pitch. We know why... because he couldn’t handle life off the pitch, bless him.
