I contacted Tom a few months ago about the Analogue Solutions Generator sequencer which I had in eurorack form but wanted to put it in its own case. Even though he deals with really great high end gear, he was really pleasant and organised a case for my unit. He asked me a few questions and after realising I didn't have a clue about some of the technical questions about power, he asked me to send him the unit, soldered and cased up the unit for me and then sent me the unit back. He is such a nice man and I can't praise him enough :)
Yeah. He just pushes the envelope. One of the guys that does this, because... it would be cool to put he and Vlad together and see what they create. Someday his stuff is gonna be worth a ton. Even though that was never the point
Thx for covering the chip shortage! So many companies have closed shop and I know a lot of builders who are teetering on the edge of folding. Luck is always a big factor in business but having to gamble on whether or not your raw materials will become unattainable adds serious risk to any bet.
I've been building a Lyra-8 over the past couple of months. The sourcing of parts has been enlightening. The Lyra-8 doesn't suffer from the same chip shortages, but looking for parts is an absolute nightmare. I can understand how disrupting that supply completely destroys companies...
looks fantastic! Thanks for covering the fest and showing us all why we should visit soon. Big ups to RYK and their Vector Wave! It is a beast and awesome to see it teased in the intro. Everyone should pick it up or the kit!
Great video mate! Thanks for taking us on the journey. Really resonated with Polypores, my workflow is the same and when I have the time and energy the music really can flow!
I live near Asheville, NC and caught Orbital at Moogfest 2012! I know Hexinverter is calling it quits and also some others I saw. I feel bad but I think the chips will come around again and will be even better and more capable in the future.
So good to see Transistor Sounds Labs and Stepper Acid! I had an order for one years ago that couldn’t be fulfilled. I’ll definitely pick one up when they’re available again.
Great video! Shame I didnt catch up with you…our eurorack analog modules were at the show, no chip shortages and they sell like hot cakes. We are shipping everything we make….☺️☺️
As one who has been in the modular scene (all formats) for a while now I enjoyed this video very much. Yes, you didn't hit up volumes of makers and manufacturers, but you spent the right amount of time with the ones you did.
Excellent. Very happy to have not been there, mainly because travelling to Sheffield is an expensive ball ache, but glad to see what was there this time round.
Excellent stuff. I was there but only between about 12.00 till 1.15. Couldn’t see myself in the background. Had a chat with Os from ES who must be one of the nicest people in the world.
Many of the ICs used in the Mutable Instruments Blades, for example, are out of stock until at least September 2023, maybe up to 113 weeks. Really enjoyed the tour, been meaning to come to one for a while now. Take it easy.
Great interviews well met with gracious gumption, my dude! Couldn't agree more with Mort's point: to have experiences with the gear. I'd add your earlier video's point Alex: "push record" to share/relive those experiences.
seeing the back an forth of different countries in the media lately, and how computer part makers have been caught out in shinnnanegans, it's becoming clear that much of the chip shortage was artificially created by manufacterers in various industries. What we need, is a list of them, so we can blackball them forever.
Mate this is a real eye opener,I got into Eurorack just before (3 years ago) it has become my drug of choice . Wish i could have been there. The UK has the luck of designers and manufacturers being close at hand for such events.Pure gold.
Thanks for sharing these interviews! Nick Batt's 'adversity makes innovation not outrageous capitalist behaviour makes in novation' is just glorious and also Gaz William's take on Eurorack! 🙂
Awesome video. My first concert was also Orbital in '99 but it was in Worcester, MA with The Crystal Method. Lo Fidelity All-Stars opened for them. It was a sick show.
@@AllenSynthesis well...A rundown of whats available to run on it too would be awesome, I have to admit I have considered making a europi about a dozen times and something else has always distracted me, but seeing those 5 in a row all doing something different is pushing me to get off my ass.😁
Thanks for posting this video. I had bought a ticket for SynthFest 2022 but came down with Covid-19 and couldn't attend. You've given me a good idea of what was there on the day, though.
I had a Rhodes Chroma on my dining room table for about a year in 1983 or 84. Completely unstable the factory kept sending replacement PCBs. The 5 Volt power supply just couldn't cope with the current draw. When it worked it was fabulous.
What a great video! And like gaz you also got me into eurorack with you’re wasp video...the rack will remain if people like you show why it makes special.
It’s a crying shame there’s no government or other business grants support for people like Allen Synthesis. We’re a country that used to encourage artists and scientists and was a little island that punched way above its weight. Those days are long gone. Now, hearing him talk about working in a bar is such a shame that his talent, and in this fledgling field, might be wasted.
Since 2014 western governments have sent Ukraine 120 billion, not to mention all the military hardware. The wests ruling class is the reason we dont do grants for small business such a music gear manufacturing. The Uk alone has sent around 15 billion to Ukraine in. Imagine what that money could have done for small business.
Especially personal experiences from designers regarding the shambolic supply situation. Hopefully Nick was right and the adversity steels small industry resolve and cunning workarounds.
Now I understand why I can't get the acid stepper, I didn't realise that these Eurorack companies were struggling so much. The Rhodes synthesiser is so cool and my favourite band All Them Witches use this synth. Wish I'd known this synth convention was on, Sheffield is only 30 minutes up the road. Cheers for making this content 👍
As a kid, growing up in Northern New England, getting my first SC Six trak 1984, I had no idea that my people would be found HERE- speaking sarcasm, as their first language! My people!
Orbital at the Octagon Center?! That should definitely be the title of a video game that features synthesizers and FX boxes fighting each other, Mortal Kombat style. “Prophet 5 vs Mono/Poly: FIGHT!” “Fatality! Prophet 5 wins!”
I hope Gaz is right about more chips on the horizon, but this demand is artificially created, and we know the controller's agenda is 100% digital so we can be manipulated and surveilled at all times.
@@unclemick-synths The tables have turned, old man, people who laugh at those of us who understand "elites" are now the joke. Enjoy your clot shots, you earned them.

I went to a party on middle school and the kids dad, as I recall, said the reason there was a synthesizer in the living room was that he was among the inventors of the Rhodes Chroma. Many years have passed, but I remember it made sick rave leads, and the "sine wave" sounded like a super saw when the cutoff was up.
God bless him for letting me play with it. The whole party was inside and this kid your son barely knows says he'd like to mess around with your polysynth... he can down and looked me over and said yes. Thanks my dude.
I had a Chroma Polaris and a DX7 back in the eighties. Weird thing is I don’t remember what happened to them. I’m guessing I sold them for rent money. What a shame.
To be frank, the rush to microcontrollers/digital modules during the course of our renaissance has been trying. It's not really why I got into modular and the simultaneous race to the most functions per hp is a symptom. OTOH, I'm certain it fueled growth in the space because platforms are easier to manufacture and plan for but... I really don't think we're losing much, in the grand scheme, once all this shakes out.
