Werner Herzog discusses working with Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Bad Lieutenant screens at BAM Rose Cinemas on Friday, March 30: www.bam.org/view.aspx?pid=4106 - Развлечения
Nic: “Werner, what’s my motivation here?”
Werner: “The bliss of evil”
Nic: “Say no more”
I think Werner Herzog not signing on unless Nic Cage signed on is the greatest compliment he'll ever receive
The love-hate relationship with Kinski never stops. Even after death.
It was all love. The fights were manufactured by mutual agreement for marketing.
can not read it without herzog voice: "even after deafffff"
His soul is still dancing
@@armenws It wasn't. Herzog writes about him in his autobiography, Kinski was a difficult person to live with and would throw temper tantrums at a moment's notice. He also fashioned himself as a starving artist with pure, god-given talent when he actually spent days and nights learning and performing monologues alone in his room he filled up with leaves from the street. He once halted an entire performance upon forgetting his monologue, lay down onto a carpet, rolled himself into it like a coccoon and refused to carry on, skip the scene or even vacate the stage.
The ghost of Klaus Kinski throws exactly a dozen eggs at Herzog each time he goes to his fridge for a midnight snack. Werner Herzog is constantly buying new eggs.
He's right about Kinski: for all his raving, he never gave Herzog anything less that perfection.
I love the irony here.
Two insane maniacs that liked what they saw in each other

Ahaha
When Werner Herzog tells you to embrace the “Bliss of Evil”, you jump straight into that abyss. The abyss will understand.
_"There is something about the bliss of evil, go for it!"_ Few directors understand & wield depth psychology like Herzog.
The "Bliss of Evil".
That gave me chills. What a simple but perfect summation of that character's motivations. And clearly Cage understood it perfectly. It's one of his strongest performances, and one of my favorite films.
Well, from what I've seen, Cage gave Herzog absolutely zero credit, and in fact complained about him getting in the way of his 'process'.
@@ShootMeMovieReviews Ha, too funny.
@@ShootMeMovieReviews ??? All I heard from Cage was that when they did two takes of a scene - one calm, one intense - he was worried Herzog would opt for the calm take, and was relieved when Herzog eventually chose not to.
@@uiogu He talked on I think a round table interview about how Herzog thought he was using real cocaine to prepare and how he hated directors interfering like that and it ruined his process.
The cliche is always trying to explain evil as the result of a bad childhood or traumatic experience...yet countless people go through such things and remain good. They may need help to function but they don't become evil...Some people are just born bad.
"the bliss of evil" the most metal statement ever? ha.
Would love to see them work together again.
Directing Nicolas Cage is a complicated profession... don’t you agree
Being Nick Cage is harder.
They made a pretty wild film together.
This was such a bizarre pairing.
I don't think so.
It was incredible
They are both iconoclastic risk-takers--they are a natural pairing.
Friggin legends, both of them 👌👌
Hahaha, the Kinski analogy.
"Why is the Bad Lieutenant so bad?"
In fairness to Kinski, he was also in some great films that Herzog didn't make. Dr. Zhivago, The Great Silence, etc.
For a Few Dollars More!
Das Netz (1975)
The Great Silence is one of the greatest ever made, period.

Im sorry but ive got to disagree with you as well as herzog about nic cages acting in the movie, id say it was some of his worst and thats saying something. It was a Humphrey bogart impression as if done by a drunken 10yo

Easily his best movie. It has absolutely everything you want from a nic cage movie.
My wife's uncle was the production designer on this film. "Shoot em again, his soul's still dancin"
googled "bliss of evil" - it is actually the name of a song used in the movie... fantastic. (i guess the song got its name from werner? don´t know)
Most illuminating.
He really summed up why that performance is so disturbing in three words there.
I remember him talking about the iguana scene in bad lieutenant port of call new orleans in a talk in dallas
Where can we see the entire talk? Thanks.
kinski did fine work in other movies. it's just that he did his best work with herzog.
Herzog saw mad bull, grabbed its horns and made it pull. He tamed the beast and beast was better than ever before.
Arguably Cage’s best performance
No. Moonstruck Wild at Heart or Leaving Las Vegas.
@@AnnaLVajda Raising Arizona.
How could I not like every opinion in this thread
It's definitely underrated still - but everyone i tell about this film love it
I tell other friends how wonderful you are.
Courage. That is what sets Herzog apart from others. He explained it, in his 24point list. In some cases, besides Herzog it is not even a priority. As in education for example. Did you go through 15 or 9 or 22 years of education? It doesn't matter, not a single lesson or grade was devoted to you, regarding your courage.
I am worried now
The roasting of Kinski omg
The relationship between Herzog and Kinski was insane, with repeated, literal death threats exchanged. Although I'm glad he got on better with Cage, them two busting up would have been epic.
was he the main bad guy in jack reacher ?
Did I bite off my fingers in a Siberian work camp?
yes. and he is a bad guy in The Mandalorian on Disney+

Cage has made a few missteps lately. But they are forgivable. He is the King of actors 👌👌
He is a Coppola.
Precisely this BLISS IN EVIL is what describes also the SUFFERING IN BLISS
By the way I bet, Herzog didn't put this suggestion on the table for the first time.
His comprehension of the world is intruiging !
That's great and all but I would like to see the baby.

DukesideoftheMOON haha, you're funny, he's an overrated method actor.
Cage is a great actor but has been in absolutely horrible movies for the past 12 years.
You can’t judge an actor by their performance in bad movies
Jeremy McReynolds so who are great actors in your opinion?
Increase Audio Gain, hard to understand on cell phone!
Interesting to contrast Werner's bliss of evil with Hannah Arendts banality of evil. The latter is quite disempowering while the bliss of evil screems out emancipation. Both ignore all of the reasons for evil but one just embraces it to the fullest.
Fun Fact: The movie 'The Bad Lieutenant' is based on an unreleased film called 'The Shitty Lieutenant' starring the late GG Allin.
What the hell happened to Nicolas Cage...
I think the problem is he just loves movies and acting in movies and doesn't have a very good nose for what will be good and what will be bad (yes probably due to cocaine ahh). Also I think he needs a good director that will work to his strengths.
The most recent film I think he was good in was Mandy, I think he was perfectly cast for that role.
Money
I found him on David Letterman talking about his pet cobra.
He bought many white elephants which he can't get rid of. He frittered away his money and bought to many castles and mansions nobody wants to buy at the moment. So he keeps on paying taxes on them. Now he has to act in anything he can get.
Just like Johnny Depp.
He went off the deep end for a while there, a combination of not caring what the movie would do to his image as long as he was having fun with it and having to take on multiple crappy but high-paying jobs to work off his tax debts. I'm really glad to see him get back to the top again with masterpieces like Pig, Mandy, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, cause deep down he's a brilliant actor who deserves to be remembered for more than just the memes...
Directing the Cage is a complicated profession, don't you agree?
Come to think of it, Nick Cage kinda is an American “poor mans” Klaus Kinski.. hmm
At least Nic Cage can get through one day without harassing other people in the most narcissistic and psychopathic way. Kinski is getting wayyyyy too much credit. The fact that his career today would be ended within a week is a clear sign of social progress.
I do not think Cage can afford to turn down any work. And I don’t think he has Leverage to force anyone’s hand anymore
Why can't he afford to turn down work? It's clear from interviews with him that he loves to work--he's a "working actor." I think he'd rather make a mediocre movie than sit by the pool in Malibu or do another charity event. You gotta respect that.
@@davidc.2878 He's notoriously terrible with money. He's the kind of guy to buy action comics #1 and read it on the john.

here is a secret: even best friends and partners should criticise each other from time to time. that doesnt mean they dont like each other.
Such a great liar ...
Cage didn't even like working with him. Herzog asked Cage what kind of white powder he used in 1 of the cocaine scenes and Cage was like you are going to ask me this now!? While we are going to do the scene!? It took him out of the mindset of the character.
I don't know how that would take him "out of the mind of the character." Unless it was real cocaine and Cage was worried Herzog would take it away from him, in which case, the problem really lies with Cage as you're not supposed to get high to play high, because then it's no longer ACTING.

Nic does his best work if you let him go wild. I think this guy is arrogant. Look at Moonstruck, Leaving Las Vegas or Wild at Heart and try to remember Nicolas is a Coppela. I did like the Iguanas in the film though. Nic just likes to do a good job.
Saying a great film director is "arrogant" is like saying a swimmer has broad shoulders--it goes with the job. What they do with that arrogance is what counts (and whether they still manage to treat people as human beings and, not as Hitchcock described his actors, as "cattle"). The evidence is that Herzog treats his actors with respect.
“I bring the best out of actors”. He may be right but still sounds arrogant.
Maybe they would have just been the best in the role anyway depends on the writing and character as much a director.
Almost all great directors are arrogant, to be fair. Look at Tarantino, or Hitchcock... while it may not be the most attractive trait, personally I think that someone who is that good at what they do has earned the right to a bit of arrogance
Herzog has all the right to be arrogant
Am I the only one who thinks Nicholas Cage is a really bad actor? I've never liked him in anything. I like some of his movies, like Con Air (it's fun), but I still think he's a horribly corny line-deliverer in them. He overacts, in my opinion.
I like Herzog. But without Kinski...not one person on this planet would know the name "Werner Herzog" . The only reason why Herzog can do what he does and say what he says today is simple. Klaus Kinski is dead and cannot talk back.
This man here is the ultimate director he would terrify the little woke pansies directing in Hollywood today
what are you talking about
Am I in an alternate universe? Nick Cage is appalling to the point of cringe.
You get N Cage BECAUSE YOU CAN ,T HAVE KLAUS ANYMORE....you still my favourite director but after what you said about Kinski....five steps lower of yourself....Kinski DiD the movies he wanted to do ,many "great famous"directors wanted him in their movies...you didn,t even would be who you are if it wasn,t for Kinski:NAME YOUR MOST FAMOUS MOVIES ,....IN ALL OF THEM....TACHAN !!! OH...LOOK KLAUS KINSKI!!!!!!!
"The bliss of evil". Only Herzog could use that phrase to motivate an actor
Leave it to a German to know about the "Bliss of Evil" and a people who have an actual word for it "Schadenfreude"
