  • Hello everyone!
    I'm a billion years late on this one. I haven't had time to edit recently.
    This is Part 1, the origins. There's honestly not a lot to talk about it for the beginning of BECCA. But it does set the stage for what came next!
    Part 2 will hopefully be up later this week. It's my analysis of what happened and why Estee Lauder decided to pull the plug.
    Thank you so much for watching!
    XOXO

    It's cool that Rebecca recruited Elizabeth Morris Williams, a woman of color in the industry, from the start, to help her create an inclusive line of products, gave her an integral role on the product development team, and made her the chief MUA. Not something you see with every makeup company's history.

    the way the packaging barely ever changed and still looks so beautiful is really timeless and stunning

    It's insane that Becca started as a brand focused on inclusivity to a brand known for primarily catering to light-medium skin tones.

      I suspect that was part of their downfall

    funny that becca started the larger shade ranges but now only release palettes in one shade that most people cant use

  • @Shari_Jessica23
    @Shari_Jessica23 3 года назад +83

    So Becca was kinda the first Fenty, in creating mainstream high end (but not luxury like Lancôme for instance) makeup that aimed to be inclusive. It just didn’t set a precedent for other brands to follow the way Fenty did

    Yay a video from you! I'd love to see a video on NYC (New York Color) not sure what happened to them. I remember using a lot of their stuff because it was very affordable.

      @mommafletch 3 года назад +2

      I was a fan of NYC, too- I actually used one of their lip glosses today, I still have a couple of back-ups knocking around. Great affordable brand! They were owned by Coty, and Coty actually did away with the line (at least, here in the States) around about or after the time they acquired CoverGirl. I really worry about Rimmel, another Coty-owned line here. I know they're still going strong overseas, but they seem to be fading to grey here in the US. I wonder if they're on the way out, too.

    I worked at Sephora US in 2005-2006 and we sold Becca. They sabotaged themselves with distribution problems. Probably a good quarter of the gondola was empty, maybe more (it's been 15 years, my memory's fuzzy). The shade range was wonderful compared to the rest of the store and we were in a pretty diverse area. They could have sold very well if the products were there to sell.

    This video was so fun to watch!!!
    I worked at high end retailer in 2004 that sold Becca and it was an absolutely gorgeous brand in every way. I always wondered why they left the US (before they came back) and I think this video answered that question!
    The major problem we always ran into was while they had beautiful products in theory, they never actually fulfilled orders for stock. So we were always sold out and unable to get the products people wished to purchase. They probably couldn’t keep up with the skus being such a small company. So crazy to see where they ended up the last few years!
    Ps I also worked with Tarte that year holy cow were they a different company at that point 😅
    Love these videos Elle!!!

    Becca is one of my Favourite brand. I have a lot of their products. Their aqua luminous foundation is my fav and perfect color for me, i love their aqua luminous concealer. Its so moist and not dry at all. I have 3 of their primers (back - first light and matte primer. I repurchased back and light primer once i know they will be out of the business this September). I have 2 palettes from them, 2 bronzers, 4 highlighters, under eye corrector, and 1 lip gloss. I will miss their products!!

    Basically, Becca walked so brands like Glossier, Fenty, and Rare could run. I miss Becca, they were really ahead of their time and struggled in the Instagram full coverage era of makeup. If they had stuck to their complexion products, they probably would have survived and made bank during the pandemic. Tiktok would have loved them.

      Also Australian and I have to disagree. The beach tints (cheek and lip stain in a tube) were massive in the "natural beachy makeup" market and made Becca look exciting to imternational investors. I loved the pressed highlighters but once Becca was out of Australian hands the brand identity sharply changed and they lost their original customer base. Of course they didn't care because the new customer base was larger.

    Ok, very unpopular opinion here:
    That condition Becca had, not selling just a part of the shade range to a retailer, but insisting on putting a whole range on the shelves, is a bullshit.
    I understand the message it should carry. But there are countries with majority of white population and you can count dark skinned people basically on 2 hands. And also opposite: countries with majority of black population and you can count the population of fair skinned people on 2 hands. What's the point of carrying the full range then? The shades that won't sell will go to waste, but it's the consumers in that country paying for those, not the retailer. And certainly not the brand, the brand will get paid for something that wouldn't sell in the first place.
    Also there's the environmental impact of that!!!
    I've talked about this with a shop manager of a local makeup retailer. She said in a whole year they didn't sell a single foundation out of the darkest third of the shade range of a certain brand, but they have to carry it. Result: The foundation from that brand is 20% more expensive in my country than in UK and France.
    Thanks for that, I'm basically paying for filling a landfill. What's the point of that? It's not helping anybody.
    As a result, people started to order this brand's stuff from western countries, because of the price difference. And the brand is probably not going to be sold here anymore and will loose the customers who only buy makeup in stores, never online.

    Becca was not out of touch when it came to the US market. It was ahead if it's time, just like mac. Complexion products for everyone, including woman who looked like me. The US beauty market was just being discriminatory as it had always been. Becca made quality lux products, that weren't a cash grab. If they stuck with the original brand mission they would've done well. Especially with Fenty in the market now.

    Thank you for mentioning my country, Australia, but we are not "behind" the US and the UK, we, along with our sister New Zealand, are unique. We have developped a a unique and independent Anglophone identity due in part to our development in relative isolation for most of our history. We have always been aware of the outside world, of the northern and western hemisphere though they have not necessarily been aware of us 😉

    • @LauraPrincee

    • @shadowsmoked88
      @shadowsmoked88  3 года назад +1

      I didn't intend to imply that Australia was "behind" any other country! Many people who worked for or with BECCA said that they felt "out of touch" because of what was happening in the US, and other countries. And this was also largely before social media as well.

    • @ohnoitsthecatman738
      @ohnoitsthecatman738 3 года назад +1

      @@shadowsmoked88 Social Media has definately had an impact on Australia, in the past we invented a lot of things, the washing line for example, it is perfe tly suited to Australian weather conditions. On a hot day in Australia you laundry van be completely dry within 2 hours of hanging it up. Some makep is released here later than in the rest of the world but I would debate Laura Prince down on whether tat makes us backwards or behind trends, if you arent aware of what is going on, you arent watching the right accounts and one person not being on top of tends dors not make a nation backwards. When I was younger I definately felt left behind but you are more correct than you know when talking about social media. The frustrating thing is retailers hold things back, for example, I got Huda's foundation stick the day it came out because I also wanted the new foundation brush ot was worth my while because the two items pushed my total over $AU90 so I got free shipping. You still cannot get the stick foundation here, you still ha e to buy it from Huda's website and her shipping rate to Australia is rediculous. I'll pay $5 or $6 for shipping, but not a cent more, anything more is just financial abuse of the customer. Anyway Elle thank you for responding to me, I really love your video's, you are an amazing young woman and I sincerely hope things blow up for you soon, you definitely deserve all the success in the world. I love my country so much, I also love New Zealand, they are so opposite yet so related 😷🌈🍭✌😙💕
