  • Join Arundhati Roy and Nick Estes for an urgent and timely conversation on the present crisis, resistance, and the meaning of freedom.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Co-presented by Haymarket Books and Elliott Bay Book Company, with the support of Tasveer, this event is to celebrate the release of Arundhati Roy’s new book of essays, Azadi: Freedom. Fascism. Fiction.
Order your copy of Azadi from Elliott Bay: www.elliottbaybook.com/book/9...
The chant of "Azadi!"-Urdu for "Freedom!"-is the slogan of the freedom struggle in Kashmir against what Kashmiris see as the Indian Occupation. Ironically, it also became the chant of millions on the streets of India against the project of Hindu Nationalism.
Even as Arundhati Roy began to ask what lay between these two calls for Freedom-a chasm or a bridge?-the streets fell silent. Not only in India, but all over the world. The coronavirus brought with it another, more terrible understanding of Azadi, making a nonsense of international borders, incarcerating whole populations, and bringing the modern world to a halt like nothing else ever could.
In this series of electrifying essays, Arundhati Roy challenges us to reflect on the meaning of freedom in a world of growing authoritarianism.
The essays include meditations on language, public as well as private, and on the role of fiction and alternative imaginations in these disturbing times.
The pandemic, she says, is a portal between one world and another. For all the illness and devastation it has left in its wake, it is an invitation to the human race, an opportunity, to imagine another world.
Arundhati Roy studied architecture in New Delhi, where she now lives. She is the author of the novels The God of Small Things, for which she received the 1997 Booker Prize, and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. A collection of her essays from the past twenty years, My Seditious Heart, was recently published by Haymarket Books. Her latest book is Azadi: Freedom. Fascism. Fiction.
Nick Estes is a citizen of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. He is an Assistant Professor in the American Studies Department at the University of New Mexico. In 2014, he co-founded The Red Nation, an Indigenous resistance organization. For 2017-2018, Estes was the American Democracy Fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Estes is the author of the book Our History Is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance and he co-edited Standing with Standing Rock: Voices from the #NoDAPL Movement, which draws together more than thirty contributors, including leaders, scholars, and activists of the Standing Rock movement.

Any other option would incur much more death and destruction. There is no "peaceful" way of making your way out of a war zone, a war that India did not start. 35:16 this is misleading. If you really read the vedic texts and translate what it says to true meaning of the words, you will know what Arundhati is claiming here is not true, and it is lost in translation. ‘Varna’ means one that is adopted by choice. Jaati means a classification based on source of origin. “Samaanaprasavaatmika Jaatih” ( from the Nyay Sutra) means ones that have the same origin of birth, example: different types of animals, birds, insects etc. It is classification of different types living beings. So an elephant's jaati is different to that of a crocodile. And so the entire human race/ homosapiens are considered ONE jaati. One type of Jaati possess the same kind of physical characteristics and it cannot morph from one Jaati / form to another and cannot cross-breed. It is perhaps that the use of the word 'jaati' in common language and liberal use of the word and its various analogies led to this nonsense we believe today / that is used politically to divide people. So yes, the caste system exists, but it is in no way part of our SACRED ANCIENT texts...I personally, wouldn't call it a religious text. Hinduism is a culture of an ancient civilization. Also, a bit more on varnas: The technical word used for Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra is ‘Varna’ and not Jaati. The texts say, a human person can choose their varna...you are not born into it...bc varna is not Jaati. So based on what you choose to do for work, you fall into that category of Varna, bc this choice has nothing to do with origin of birth. So let's correct this narrative of caste bias and discrimination: it is posed as 'religious' here in india, and it exists in the form of class / race bias in other parts of the world...this is a product of colonization. Discrimination is discrimination, and no religion really propagates this type of violence. I wish more people were explained what the texts really say and a lot of this shit would stop. But I suppose there is a section of society that benefits from keeping people in the dark and continuing oppression of certain section of the society for their own benefit. Please correct me and help me grow if any of what i said was rubbish. thanks in advance.

You are so misinformed about Jaati. The caste system racializes people into various jaatis and thus shuns intermixing, intermingling or inter marriage. The caste system also puts women below men by categorising them as 'naari jaati'. Most of the struggles for emancipation be it dalit rights, adivasi rights, women's rights or lgbtqia+ rights are a direct attack on caste, whether they realise it or not.

@@bisskutt Hi! you're 100% right. Jaati which what we know as 'caste' now and all the discrimination that happens in the name of it is absolutely inhumane. All I was trying explain is that the original word and what it was meant to be in the texts wasn't perpetuating the kind of discrimination we see today in the name of "jaati" / caste. I think it is important to explain what the literal word 'jaati' means first and the evolution of the word from what it meant and what it has become now in our society. Especially if you are directly talking about the sacred texts. It is used in the worse way possible to divide people further. And the texts definitely don't preach that or talk about it. But yes, all of this nonsense that goes on now is in the name of religion, and I think may be if we really started understanding the true translations of the verses, a lot of this discrimination could end or at least it wouldn't go on in the name of religion.

(The Gautama, one of the sutras says: "If a súdra listens in on vedic recitation, his ears shall be filled with molten tin or lac; if he repaeats it, his tongue shall be cut-off; if he commits it to memory, his body shall be split asunder" Refer: Varna System in the Dahrmasutras by Tejas Harad for further reading on this) The caste is not only about the four varnas but also the untouchables/avarnas/dalits who are classified as sub-human in hindu society and are assigned the dirtiest jobs. So this idea that caste does not arise from hindu vedic text/culture is wrong.

Caste is not just division of labours , it is division of labourers...manu verses say that 'women shouldn't be independent' 'women are inferior to men' 'an old shudra man has to be a slave and be obedient to a brahma or kshathriya or vaishiya kid ' brahmin man should only marry brahmin woman and people should only marry within their caste' '100 year old khsathriya should treat 10 year old brahmin as his father' 'shudras shouldn't be allowed to recieve education' 'manu IV 78-81' & 'manu 11-135' & 2/215 &2/213 u could see them in these verses.
So u r misinformed about caste and verna or jaati ..hinduism is about inequality , it was designed for segregation of certain groups from receiving education or pleasure or what ever. I would advice you to read about ambedkar or arundhathi roy's doctor and saint which talks about conflict between gandhi and ambedkar also caste system deeply 🙂

Actually I just have one question : in 1.15 hours of talk not even a one positive word about India. Why ? We live in streets and we also read and understand India.I am not a modi fan. Everything she says is subjective without much factual backing. when questioned about facts, most of her answers start with 'if you see'. She has made her life and career out of speaking ill about her own in every global platform she has been while praising its undemocratic neighbours. She is communist intellectual who sees india as an oppessor. She wud be very happy to see india disintegrate into 300 princely state. She cannot bear the fact that India is being taken seriously in global geopolitics. She has been this way in any government, she spoke agains india during congress time also. She suffers from some childhood psychological trauma as her parents were separated and she may have faced some social problems in a conservative malyali neighbourhood where she was raised by her single mother. She blames the INDIA for that trauma, thats the core nature of socialism, they manage to blame anything for their problems. Com on Arundhati, grow the fuck up, we all have faced problems in childhood, some were bullied, some faced corporal punishment, some were abused.... DON'T BLAME THE INIDAN STATE FOR THAT.
