- The seventh annual Frances Tarlton “Sissy” Farenthold Endowed Lecture in Peace, Social Justice and Human Rights, presented at the LBJ Auditorium on The University of Texas at Austin campus. The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center hosted the lecture in partnership with the Rothko Chapel and it was co-sponsored by the South Asia Institute at the University of Texas at Austin on April 20, 2022. Arundhati Roy used the occasion to deliver a new piece, “Religious Nationalism, Dissent, and the Battle Between Myth and History,” which has now been published on Literary Hub (lithub.com/aru.... After the lecture, Roy engaged in conversation with LBJ School of Public Affairs Professor Raj Patel, in which she read passages from a number of her works and answered audience questions.

I absolutely love this woman. As a brilliant writer she could so easily have simply enjoyed wealth, awards and widespread admiration. Instead she has chosen a far harder path as an activist and campaigner, placing herself in danger and subjecting herself to the ignorant, irrational hatred of so many of her I've own countrymen and women.
What these ignoramuses fail to understand is that women and men of good conscience and impeccable moral integrity such as Roy also speak for those whom regard themselves as her enemies. She speaks on behalf of all the poor, marginalised, oppressed and voiceless masses of her nation. She understands far better than most the words of the simple poem written by Pastor Niemoller, before the Nazis murdered him:

Arundhati is one of the most powerful and accomplished writers of Non-Hindu tragedies. Within the Hindu fold she focuses only on the injustices of the Dalits/ Adivasis, ignoring the remaining very broad mainstream 60-65% of the Indian population. It is almost as if she is picking & skillfully weaving isolated minority events into a narrative to rubbish Hindu society & culture. Using these incidents as an excuse to slam a billion people as "Irredeemable India/ Iredeemable Hinduism".
Looking only at just the Partition which she tries to pass of as a casual symmetric event, one feels that maybe some correction is in order:
Hindus and Sikhs were driven out very brutally, very violently from their possessions, their lands, *from their stable solid lives* from Pakistan, Hindus and Sikhs were ethnically cleansed and almost erased out of West Pakistan.
Only Punjab did any proportionate counter response. Punjab retaliated because "their own folk" ( *unke apne* ) were being slaughtered.
While In the rest of India, the Indian response was very weak. Partly because of the emasculating pressure which MK Gandhi brought to bear on Indian society. But the rest of India was quite unmindful of the pain and anguish of the Hindus of West Pakistan and East Bengal. The rest of India apart from some elites in the other states did not feel any connection or remorse or regret. And in fact celebrated that event in the form of an Independence Day, without much trace of pain or anguish. They were far away and safe and untouched.
When Indian Punjab sent train fulls of Muslim corpses, then the butchered train fulls of Hindu-Sikh corpses being sent by West Pakistan too stopped.

Also a small but considerable proportion of Hindus and Sikhs were forcibly converted to Islam at the time of Partition. The choice offered to them when caught was to accept Islam and be able to stay back and maintain their wealth and lands. Or die. Many stayed back to avoid poverty and death.
In India, neither were Muslims driven out, Nor was forced conversion offered to Muslims as option to stay and save lands & wealth.
It is only now that we are able to talk of this Genocide which was deliberately suppressed by Secular academics and Leftists. The asymmetric nature of the event was quietly hidden. Also the fact that apart from the Indian Punjab, which did a symmetric counter genocide to its small Muslim population, the rest of the Indians did nothing... this was totally opposite and asymmetric to what the Muslims of Pakistan did.
What happened to mainstream Hindus might have been most brutal and numerically disproportionate and asymmetric as compared to what Muslims were made to undergo.... but maybe these stories need to come out now..
