Not just one of the greatest games on the SMS but one of the greatest home games ever. Amazing playability, learning curve just perfect, with super graphics and atmosphere. Very fond memories of this game.
one of the 10 best games of the SMS, it had everything: great gameplay, superb graphics and art direction for its time, smooth animation, progressive difficulty, excellent music
Kenseiden (剣 聖 伝 in Japanese, meaning "legendary sacred sword") is a 2 mega game for the Sega Master System video game, created by Sega in 1988. In this game, the player controls a samurai named Hayato, who travels through Japan to retrieve the Dragon King's Sword and the five scrolls that are inherited from his family, stolen by the Warlocks who ruled the country, and destroy Black Castle. In the original Japanese version of the game, Hayato is blond, but in the American version his hair changed to dark. A drawing of Alex Kidd's head shows hidden in the walls of the third stage.
I just noticed also how detailed this is. Your character actually is animated properly depending on the side he's facing. I mean the sword is always wielded by is left arm. Wow.
I was so little when my dad bought me this game as a kid. The opening screen was terrifying lol! I love the different sword techniques u learn as u progress. Playing Sekiro brought back memories of this classic
kzbxvz nope. I beat it once in 88. got sms Christmas. 6 months later I beat this game days before my buddies and I burned out the console playing it for 14 hours straight while it sat on a hot TV. I just got another a few weeks ago and am playing kenseiden regularly... haven't even made it through 1/2 the game yet. Death.
kzbxvz It's a great, classic game, it's very clearly made by the same team as made Revenge of Shinobi. It plays more like a 16-bit game than an 8-bit one.
My memories of playing at night time in my cold garage alone are precious to me. No game has ever come close to enchanting me as much as this game did. Gave me goose bumps watching this. Thank you for posting.
Christmas of 1989, I got a Master System with the light gun, and the console had Safari Hunt and Hang On built in. The first cartridge game was Kenseiden, and I loved it.
One of my all-time favorite SMS games. But man was it hard... never was able to finish it. I wonder how many Master Systems were smashed against the wall because of it lol.
I never knew this game existed until now and it seems to have inspired some things in the Shinobi series, which are some of my favorite games that I play since I was a kid. 1st stage background reminds me of Revenge of Shinobi 1st stage background. Also parts of the 2nd stage reminds me of the 'Castle' stage in GG Shinobi 2 and the 2nd stage boss is similar to the Genesis version of Shadow Dancer's 4th stage boss. Seems like fun
The whole console is very underrated. While it didnt have the extensive library the NES has a lot of the SMS games are fun and look and sound awesome. This definitely is one of them. Not to mention some of the arcade ports look great on the SMS as opposed to the NES. Nintendo just had better marketing at the time and more to offer. Lots of people weren't impressed with tech specs back then nor things like 3D glasses. Their light phaser still looks cooler to me.
After 25 years, I can finally see how this game ended. I vividly remember playing this when I was a kid. I mastered all the controls and the challenges, even getting up early Saturday mornings to play this, but I could NEVER beat that final boss. A little pro tip that I picked up for the penultimate boss at 31:40, I use to just crouch down and hold the attack button. This way any orbs that came flying your way would automatically get cut down by your sword, without having to mash the attack button.
Tom .Mr. T. Same here! I never beat the final boss, but he somehow used a magic potion and got his life back. Which button was that? I wanna try again in a emulador
The potion happens automatically if you have one. It's close to impossible to beat the last boss without it so if you use yours up it's game over. It's also more or less a necessity to beat the one training room that gives you the life boost (on same island as monk boss.)
Finished it just the other day. Great game that was my first ever video game :) Still haven't been able to finish all dojo training levels. Too damn hard!
This sort of reminds me of a similar game from Konami for the Famicom called Getsufuu Maden, which sadly was never released to the U.S. in the same way that Sega's Kenseiden was. Thanks for the video, sempai!
best platform game I played on sega master system. My big brother owned one and I remember playing around 7. This game I could never beat to my knowledge. I made it really close. Extremely difficult. I love the moves and ect.
My son always pesters me to try "real games" like Dark Souls, I tell him I don't need to, as I completed Kenseiden 30 years ago, and at the time it was rock hard to beat, very like Souls games, learning the patterns of each enemy type etc.

Absolute 8-bit masterpiece. As a kid I had lots of trouble beating it but succeeded sometimes.
