It seems that the Rhodes handles chords and mid range playing with more "warmth" and "emotion"...they both sound pretty close to each other when individual notes are being played, but when chords are played you hear a distinct difference in tonal character...primarily in how the overtones are expressed. Nice video 👌🏾👊🏾
I own SV-1 88 and I'd say it sounds almost nearly identical to the original. Not completely the same, but every single Rhodes has different sound anyway.
I own an SV-1. While the acoustic piano sounds are disappointing (not bad but something like the nord stage 3 sounds significantly better), the electric piano sounds are absolutely fantastic. Don’t think of it as an emulation of the Rhodes - think of it as an upgrade. The korg has a much better ability to cut through a mix compared to the Rhodes - something that is very important for playing live. Combine that with all the ability to tweak sounds both on the keyboard and using the editor software along with all the modern connectivity and the choice is clear. Nothing is going to sound exactly like an authentic Rhodes unless it is an authentic Rhodes and believe me when I say I’d love to have a Rhodes. But there is absolutely no way I’m paying over $1K more to own one over an SV-1. Anyone who tells you that you need to do that is just blinded by nostalgia and retirement spending money. The Rhodes is completely impractical to own compared to the SV-1 if you plan on playing live at all. Again, this is really not a compromise of quality. Sure, the SV-1 is supposed to have a vintage look and have vintage-y presets - but I really don’t think of it as an emulation but instead an entirely new instrument. A new standard. Not a copy. A step forward. Don’t let people steer your thinking. If the Fender Rhodes was the same price as the Korg then MAYBE there would be competition there. But that is only a MAYBE. I can’t help but notice how lost and muddy the Rhodes sounds in a mix unless artificially tampered with post-production so forget about any sort of reliability with its ability to cut through a mix in a live setting. I’m a pianist at heart - I know just as well as anyone that playing a legitimate acoustic grand piano is different than a acoustic grand sound on even the highest quality keyboards. But does that mean I’m going to try to get an acoustic grand into a venue that doesn’t already have one or refuse to play because they don’t have one? No. That’s the mindset that a lot of people are trying to instill in you and it is toxic. Don’t think of these things as compromises. Take what you have or what you can afford and master it - learn its ins and outs. Make it your own. It will no longer be a compromise - instead it will be YOUR sound. Not anyone else’s.
Totally agree. Let’s be honest: the SV1 is ONLY for the rhodes, the pianos sound way too cheesy, too plastic. But hey, at the end of the day this is a 2009 keyboard. If you want good APs you definitely want to look for the Nords or the Yamahas

Both sound really good, and both come with tradeoffs. Choose the Fender Rhodes for pure tone and authenticity, the SV1 for easier transport and fewer maintenance issues.
Scrolling through the comments, I started waiting for you to switch off the sv-1, mostly focusing on reading. You switched four times, and I didn't notice. You could record right off the sv-1 and tell people it was the real thing, and no one would doubt it. You could record the real thing, telling people it's the sv-1, and they'll tell you to get a real Rhodes. They're effectively the same, don't you think? though the real deal has much more dynamic contrast, I must say.
If you do not compare them side by side you can not guess if it is the rhodes or the sv-1 in my opinion... and if you hear it just as a part in a band your chances are even lower.
Fully agree, and it proves the fact that once I took my korg sv1 that mainly i use it home and not on stage and nobody realized it was the korg, we made a recording and I asked people which of the 2 recording of the same song was payed with the real fender, no one was able to guess it correctly. So side by side yes but what is telling exactly that a Fender Rhodes is better ?
@@davideviolante73 While that may be true, I absolutely guarantee you if I sat you down blindfolded in front of the two, and had you play them back to back, you'd undoubtedly be able to tell me which is which. I know I would be able to. The SV-1 definitely SOUNDS very good. However the dynamics and touch response of the action is where the Rhodes will beat it every single time. I guarantee you if Jimi Hendrix played a $100 First Act guitar from Wal-Mart that he would have whaled on it, and it would have sounded great and he would have still sounded just like Jimi Hendrix. Does that mean that a First Act is equal to, or "just as good as" a USA made Fender Stratocaster? Of course not. That isn't to say that the SV-1 is a bad instrument, or that it's unusable. However it lacks in a way that ALL digital instruments are lacking. No matter how good samples or digital algorithms become, they can't replicate the organic feel of a real instrument with real mechanics. Will say though, this is probably the best sounding Rhodes emulation I've ever heard.

Not only does the Korg sound better than "good enough" but add in the extra (modern) versatility and there is no doubt which I would prefer for is best for gigging.
The sounds are pretty damn close, but its the keyboard feel that makes the Rhodes imho, although theres a certain presence about the Rhodes I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe psychological, I dunno.
Rhodes is set up way louder than Korg in this comparison, so of course it is going to be viewed as be much better. I'd like to see the demo where you spend a bit more time to make sure the loudness is the same, and set up Korg for a more similar tone (slightly more saturation here).

Most of you couldn't tell the difference blindfolded. Throw the korg through a cooking tube amp and you have something really great. It probably comes down to the feel of the instrument, the tines vibrating. Stuff like that can't be captured with a digital device. Just throw it into a good tube amp and have fun!

It actually sounds pretty good, but if you play on a SV1 you have a very bad feeling.... The Fender Rhodes has a better keyboard and you can express yourself with the instrument, and you can't have these feelings with the Korg....
That groK is awesome, on its own, without comparing it to any other keyboard, it does have a sound. It certainly has a place on the road if you have multiple 'boards to move. Then there's the Rhodes, do you REALLY think there is a comparison? One certainly does not need a refined ear to tell. F/R, hands down.
I was trying sv-1 in the shop yesterday and what I've noticed - and it's also apparent in this video - sv-1 simulates, what I guess is key press noise. It's quite audible. But as I hear in this video, the real thing doesn't produce this noise as much. I guess this is due to Rhode's keyboard mechanism itself and it's not registered when recording via line output. Anybody knows if there's option to reduce this noise in sv-1?
I've got both, definitely about the sound of the Rhodes , especially when you beat some notes more heavily, you can hear that "coarse" sound that I love so much, and that nobody can emulate. It's unique.
Funkbutterfly Yes, to adjust those key sounds press the function button and then adjust the bass knob up or down. On the piano+strings patch this adjusts the level of the strings.
Presently have a Yamaha PF85 which has brilliant acoustic piano I have owned for years. Owned an immaculate Rhodes stage 73 a few yrs ago, but had to let go because of space issues. I have been looking for a keyboard that offers both plus a whole lot more. Hoping to pick up an SV1 very soon. 😄
i like the korg better. the problem i had with my fender rhodes besides the 150 lbs factor was after driving from gig to gig the piano sounded different the harp would shift so slightly in transit and it would sound worse and worse. the korg does a good job emulating the rhodes and it has some hidden settings to change the voicing of the pickups and the mechanical noise wich is a nice touch and sv1 maybe weighs about 60 lbs with the case..
Plus, the action is much stiffer on the SV-1- it's more like a piano... does not feel like a Rhodes, or organ, or Prophet-5, but it sounds fairly close to some electric pianos.

According to this video, the sv1 sounds like a pretty decent substitute, compared to other keyboards. I never tried one on person, though. No opinion can be expressed until you feel the keyboard response under your fingers: that really means a lot...
especially when you play harsh on the rhodes it becomes this beautiful tone rich sound, but the low end is also awesome. The synth doesn't have that, it becomes a bit harsh and sharp. I think making a good rhodes sound is very hard and really only spectatronics has achieved that level of perfection.
Had the 88 SV-1. The EPs were good, but not the APs. The Rhodes sounds ought to be good enough for anybody, although the tremolo is before the single tube & switches to mono with the tube on. If you would rather lift the real thing, it’s up to you.
The real Rhodes has that distinct clanking hammer feel on the tines that you cannot get from a digital keyboard. But over a band, or a mix, people cannot tell.
The Korg definitely is fuller and sounds better in a way. But the Rhodes has so much more character, a restrained fragility with a more dynamic envelope with a gentler attack.
I can see in the future a revival of the genuine Fender Rhodes in the same way we hear Mozart played on reproductions of the authentic instruments of the times. Fender Rhodes wins.
Used to own the SV, until I heard a serious lack of decay in the upper two octaves, not to mention very thin sounding. Roland RD300 was much truer from lowest to highest in terms of natural decay and fullness.
Ok, but can we appreciate how good the sv1 sounds? For a digital keyboard thats now pretty old it holds up so well against the real thing. It has the best Rhodes sound out there by far (Nord not even holding a candle up to it although its much more flexible and the other sounds are better on that). Good job KORG even tho the real deal is the real deal... :D
I've owned both instruments and use an SV and a Hammond Sk-1 now. Sounds can be tweeked to your taste and genre. Repaired my Rhodes ( replacing hammers and a couple of tines) about twice a year for 8+ years. Never any repairs on the SV in 9 years. Always in tune. Weighs less. High quality. Great pianos for the money. Good for LH organ comp. Decent clavs. Decent strings. Wish they had put handles on it. At 35 lbs. it's a slippery mf to pick up! Wah! lol
The difference between these two is the same as the difference between two real rhodes. Rhodes are very different from each other. The only thing that gives the korg away is that its “too perfect”. It sounds astonishingly like the real thing. (I own a 1979 mark I)
amazingly, one can STILL hear the better sound of original rhodes via bits, via youtube, on cheep amp, on cheep spkrs, so one shudders to think, how MUCH BETTER it will be in real life....sigh

The Korg sounds nice but not as good as the Rhodes. The Korg sounds a little dull and less dimensional compared to the genuine article. You can hear the tines resonate in the Rhodes. But for a gig I would choose the Korg unless I wanted the coolness factor.
On the Rhodes, when different metal tines are striken, in addition to the fundamentals and the harmonics of each fundamental, there are extra harmonics produced because of all the resonance happening at the same time, while on the Korg, there is no such phenomenon. That's why the Rhodes sounds richer.
It does, actually, to some degree- especially if you have the sustain pedal down. I have an SV-1, and the biggest difference is the feel. I used to play totally different on Rhodes and Wurlitzers. It's fun to get an approximation of the sounds though.
Its like comparing the naked eye to the worlds best camera. The naked eye is always better. Rather have the Rhodes instead. Old stuff is cooler than new stuff.
Rhodes rule.. It's rounder and woodier,. But korg keyboards are great.. Better than many Yamaha keyboards and much friendlier. Studio session won't make much difference to me between korg or Rhodes.. Respect to both.
You cant tell on a video. The synths have nice sounds but they dont compare with the character, manipulation and feel of a real rhodes. I can play a video of all the rhodes sounds on my motif and old Alesis QSR and will sound great, but to a player there is a major difference

a rhodes at home and a sv1/2 for live. anyway, i use an older nord electro - very leightweight which is good

Great comparison. Think it would be nearly impossible to own a original fender rhodes these days but the Korg sv1 sounds good enough.

The sv1 is missing the tine release noise and the tines also aren't loud enough .

I have always loved the SV1. I've had a suitcase 88 and it's the closest recreation, but I say SV1 for the road, Fender Rhodes for the studio.

I use scarbees vintage keys, sounds stellar in my opinion, closest any plugin has come to the real thing

The SV would be better live simply because it's smaller. If I was to do anything else though, I'd go Rhodes.

Is it the imperfections that make it special? A bit like jazz or blues. Needs a bit of something other than perfect pitch and tone.

The Korg is just missing that unique attack the Rhodes delivers. Maybe it's something that isn't easy to digitally model?

It does well at the softer stuff but loses something when you dig in. It’s a close copy though.
For the love of God get the Rhodes serviced.
The SV1 needs a good tune up as well.

your KORG doesn't hold a candle to the rhodes piano.the fhodes sounds alive and the vintage vibes have a ring to it and long ring that is
especially when you play harsh on the rhodes it becomes this beautiful tone rich sound, but the low end is also awesome. The synth doesn't have that, it becomes a bit harsh and sharp. I think making a good rhodes sound is very hard and really only spectatronics has achieved that level of perfection.

the only difference I'm hearing is the mechanical noises weren't modeled. we have keyscape for that now
Had the 88 SV-1. The EPs were good, but not the APs. The Rhodes sounds ought to be good enough for anybody, although the tremolo is before the single tube & switches to mono with the tube on. If you would rather lift the real thing, it’s up to you.
Every rhodes will sound different due to the height difference from the tine to the pickup that you can adjust.

the Korg has this noise/distortion/dirt subtle, but there doesn't have the clarity of the rhodes
The real Rhodes has that distinct clanking hammer feel on the tines that you cannot get from a digital keyboard. But over a band, or a mix, people cannot tell.
I am surprised that the Rhodes has a rounder sound. A little bit of an attack thing or decay or something.

The Korg definitely is fuller and sounds better in a way. But the Rhodes has so much more character, a restrained fragility with a more dynamic envelope with a gentler attack.
I can see in the future a revival of the genuine Fender Rhodes in the same way we hear Mozart played on reproductions of the authentic instruments of the times. Fender Rhodes wins.

the SV-1 is a little more clearer and handles chords much better than rhodes
Used to own the SV, until I heard a serious lack of decay in the upper two octaves, not to mention very thin sounding. Roland RD300 was much truer from lowest to highest in terms of natural decay and fullness.
Ok, but can we appreciate how good the sv1 sounds? For a digital keyboard thats now pretty old it holds up so well against the real thing. It has the best Rhodes sound out there by far (Nord not even holding a candle up to it although its much more flexible and the other sounds are better on that). Good job KORG even tho the real deal is the real deal... :D
Tbh, I feel that if set-up well, the digital piano would have a tone just as good as any Rhodes, and in some cases would sound better
I've owned both instruments and use an SV and a Hammond Sk-1 now. Sounds can be tweeked to your taste and genre. Repaired my Rhodes ( replacing hammers and a couple of tines) about twice a year for 8+ years.
Never any repairs on the SV
in 9 years. Always in tune.
Weighs less. High quality. Great pianos for the money.
Good for LH organ comp. Decent clavs. Decent strings.
Wish they had put handles on it.

Nothing ever sounded like the rhodes. It sounds WAY better, specially in the low notes : it's shiny and round while the Korg sounds a bit growly.
Chords at 1:45 are crazy

The difference between these two is the same as the difference between two real rhodes. Rhodes are very different from each other. The only thing that gives the korg away is that its “too perfect”. It sounds astonishingly like the real thing. (I own a 1979 mark I)
amazingly, one can STILL hear the better sound of original rhodes via bits, via youtube, on cheep amp, on cheep spkrs, so one shudders to think, how MUCH BETTER it will be in real life....sigh
the fender rhodes cannot be perfectly replicated, clearly its mechanical genius, but wow the Korg is nice here
Prefer the Rhodes, because it is more authentic. But the Korg sounds also great.

The Korg made me think, "Dang, that sounds great. Incredible emulation." But only the Rhodes made me cry.
Opino que ambos pianos suenan muy bonitos. A lo mejor una versión mas modera de Korg suena mejor, pero hay que recordar que hay versiones modernas de Fender Rhodes que son mas potentes y casi ambos estan al mismo nivel.
The fender Rhodes has a bite and growl to it your top does not have a bite and growl.
The Korg sounds nice but not as good as the Rhodes. The Korg sounds a little dull and less dimensional compared to the genuine article. You can hear the tines resonate in the Rhodes.
But for a gig I would choose the Korg unless I wanted the coolness factor.
On the Rhodes, when different metal tines are striken, in addition to the fundamentals and the harmonics of each fundamental, there are extra harmonics produced because of all the resonance happening at the same time, while on the Korg, there is no such phenomenon.
That's why the Rhodes sounds richer.
It does, actually, to some degree- especially if you have the sustain pedal down. I have an SV-1, and the biggest difference is the feel. I used to play totally different on Rhodes and Wurlitzers. It's fun to get an approximation of the sounds though.
Its like comparing the naked eye to the worlds best camera. The naked eye is always better. Rather have the Rhodes instead. Old stuff is cooler than new stuff.

To me the SV-1 sounds way more digital and i didnt felt the bass...the rhodes is thicker, round, sweet... both are good though, in its way.

But korg keyboards are great.. Better than many Yamaha keyboards and much friendlier.
Studio session won't make much difference to me between korg or Rhodes..

You cant tell on a video. The synths have nice sounds but they dont compare with the character, manipulation and feel of a real rhodes. I can play a video of all the rhodes sounds on my motif and old Alesis QSR and will sound great, but to a player there is a major difference
