Great dummer, composer, and reportedly an excellent cook as well. He trained in harsh Ohio winters, forced by cruel teachers to sleep outside, drumming through the night to keep himself warm. The warmth allowed him to use the kick drum as a sort of Dutch oven, providing bread not only for his family, but enough to trade for more drum lessons.
Romany1111 his drum instructor was actually my current instructor Ryun Louie. I don't think he's that harsh tho lol

I don't know anything about rhythm - can't clap on a beat, etc. so I typically avoid drummers for sheer ignorance on my part. But this dude? Saw/Heard him on a Tiny Desk Concert with Moon Hooch and thought he was phenomenal. I literally would never choose to listen to a drum solo under any other circumstance, but I'm here for this.
I'm at a moon hooch show right now listening to this solo in the back. Moon hooch is wack without James. It's just gym bros with saxophones

My drum teacher wants me to play American style grip but I play French more naturally. This video makes me feel a lot better. I'm not going to drum lessons anymore.
You know he went to music school, right? I don't think quitting your lessons is the way to get to this point

Unreal. Is that technique of placing the drum stick on the tom and hitting it w/ the other stick original? Either way - super creative stuff.
+Jay Pescione Nah, it's pretty common. It's still neat though. You can change the tone of the tom by just putting more pressure on the head with the first stick. Max Roach used this technique in a lot of songs. Buddy Rich too.

I’ve seen them 4 times… twice with James and he was incredible. Too bad he had to go but the new drummer lays down that sick tempo regardless. Love these guys. Sax wobbles!

I agree he is very talented but don't ignore the years of hard work that it takes to be able to play at this level. You don't get to be a professional at anything without working for it.
