Jackie was the greatest. The rule in the music industry was that Jackie always had to perform last because no one could follow him. This was well known.
The two acts that always had to perform last were Jackie Wilson and Elvis Presley. Elvis and Jackie were friends and Elvis idolized Jackie's performance style and adopted some of Jackie's dance moves.
Yes indeed no one could compete with his voice, energy, and presence.
Jackie Wilson, also known as "Mr. Excitement", influenced alot of future R&B singers such as Michael Jackson. His LIVE performances on The Ed Sullivan Show are legendary.
he influenced Elvis too!
Best ever, my first 45 was Lonely Teardrops at 14 yrs money 💰 hard
to come by. This was my choice, I had
excellent taste , Lol. Just sad we lost him
so young. Great Talent
Raised on Jackie Wilson thanks to my mother who was his number one fan.
Check out "Stop Dogging Me Around".
I saw Jackie 16 times live. I know why he is called Mr Excitement. Elvis went to see Jackie's show 5 times at the Apollo in his early days. There was only one Jackie Wilson. Jackie Wilson was the most under-rated song and dance performer ever. I am thankful that I got to me him back stage at his performance in Hickory, N C.
Ever since discovering Jackie Wilson he’s been my favorite singer. One of a kind as far as I’m concerned
Jackie Wilson, was the love of my life, he didn't get the credit but he was the greatest showman and singer in this life time and any other.. he was the greatest and always will be...R.I.P. Jackie ❤️I still love you ♥️
In my opinion one of the best performances ever recorded ❤️
Thanks Shawn! This is a FANTASTIC video for you to review. James Brown & Luciano Pavarotti

Jackie recorded this on Gee records 1952.. I was a little kid at that time.. I am white, grew up in small town USA, and our house was filled with Jackie Wilson, Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler, Sammy Davis Junior, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Etta James. Much more but those are the singers I still have either their original single 45 recordings or 78 RPM vinyls....Loved your reaction , would really like to see you delve into more iconic singers from the 50's 60's 70's. it's the only way to keep this music alive for future generations.
Pomade for the hair .. you had to process your to hair to get straight then use Dax Pomade or Royal Crown with a do rag.Jackie Wilson was the best of the best passed away young. This is real music played live no mimicking to a record you had to have talent. Be proud of your culture !
I'm Scottish and that is fricking amazing xx when you can sing with soul I love it xxx thanks for playing it
Jackie Wilson originally wanted to be a boxer but his mother told him No! Lol ... so he became a singer and also trained in opera.. he also had a church background as well 🥰
Back in my day if you couldnt sing like this Acapella you couldn't sing. And just a note, MJ dedicated his Thriller album to Jackie and also attributed his dance moves to Jackie... Watch him live singing Lonely Teardrops...
He was called "Mr Excitement". Thank you, thank you , thank you! Your reaction made my day.!
Thank you!!!
Danny Boy is an Irish ballad about a parent's son going off to war.
Actully it was written by a british man but yes it is very popular in ireland and america/canada
@@bigredmarchingon3200 I never knew that it was written by a British man, interesting. But it is documented as an Irish folk-song.
Yes it's an English song.
If you want a real treat, check out Jackie's version of a country classic called, "You Don't Know Me." The man had an amazing vocal range and could sing anything.
How could anyone not love hearing the beautiful soulful voice of Jackie Wilson sing. He gives me chills as he angelically & emotionally sings of all things an 117 yr old English/Irish melody folk song that today is often sung at Irish funerals similar to how the song Amazing Grace is sung at funerals in the states. When he's singing "Oh Danny Boy" it's even more touching realizing the song is about a mother's heart is breaking saying farewell to her 3rd son Danny going off to fight in WW1. She may never see or hear from him again. This TV show I thought was his 1958 version but was told it was 1964 so Jackie was around 30 yrs old as he was born in 1934. He loved to box as a teen but his mother forced him to quit. Opera voice lessons were in his future. He was with a group but went solo in 1957. They didn't call him Mr. Excitement for nothing. His vocal range, songs & dynamic stage performances were loved & imitated. I did see him perform at The Regal Theatre around 1965-66 but he did seem off kelter that night. His life was full of highs and lows. Sadly in NJ on 9/29/1975, at age 41, he had a heart attack on stage during a Dick Clark Rock N Roll Revue singing his hit "Lonely Tear Drops". When he collapsed he hit his head & stopped breathing resulting in a coma. He spent over 8 long years in a nursing home before his death at age 49. Just 2 years ago he posthumously received the deserved honor of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy & One of members of the Shi Lites speaking & others in attendance. 4 of his surviving children accepted the award.
Jackie Wilson is one of my favorite singers of all time
No, that's ALL NATURAL,Blessed with that VOICE
Yes it is and it was so powerful!!! Now let him sing!😁
Jackie was said to have an "opraetic" voice.💖💖
I know that it was hard to hear toward the end, but he was saying, "Now you know why they call him the great, impeccable Jackie Wilson."
Hi. Some say that the Irish ballad is a message from a mother to her son who is going off to war. If you have time you might listen to a traditional version of Danny Boy. It’s solemn and simply sung and the touching words make some cry.
Great choice. Jackie was known as Mr. Excitement. Jackie didn't write this song. It's an old Irish folk song. Listen to Jackie doing "To Be Loved" live on the old Ed Sullivan show and "Lonely Teardrops" on the old Dick Clarke's American Bandstand show. Jackie was easily one of the 3 or 4 best singers of his era, and in my opinion, the best of his era. He could sing anything from R&B, to pop, standards, to light opera. There was nothing like him. But what was also interesting was his stage act. Everyone stole from his act at that time from James Brown to Michael Jackson. Anyone that plays with a microphone stand, spinning it, rocking it back and forth, swinging it around, anything, stole it from Jackie.
The hair style from the 1920's was called a "Conk" and it used lye as a relaxer to straighten and smooth your hair. Also excessive pomade could somewhat straighten your hair. Jackie's hairstyle here is a pompadour, popularized in the 50's, and he probably used only pomade, but that's just my theory. In black neighborhoods Elvis was known and the black Jackie Wilson, although I'll let you judge as to who had the better voice. Jackie had his first hit record in 1958 with "Lonely Teardrops". When Jackie suffered a heart attack onstage in 1975 he collapsed onstage. He was in a coma for 8 years. It is rumored that Dick Clark and Elvis paid some of his hospital bills. In 1961 Jackie was shot onstage in the stomach , supposedly by a jealous woman and lost a kidney.
I like what you wrote. Jackie was the best.
He was the BEST singer, no doubt. NOBODY could touch this guy.
It's an old English song.
@@hetrodoxly1203 No. The words were written by an Englishman. However the melody is taken from an old Irish folk song, which is why the Irish have adopted it.
@@helgar791 Yes it's one of the 3000 songs he wrote, it's English, was very popular in Music halls around Britain and Ireland, Londonderry Air is the tune to loads of songs some written by Irish people why didn't they become popular.
The song goes way back it's an Irish song and Jackie was a friend of Elvis can you please do jackie teardrops please and watch how he moves fantastic 👍 🇬🇧
Hey his transitions between chest and head tones.....flawless.
Okay bro. If you're gonna explore the songs of that first era of rock & roll, 1953-1965, you're going to hear a WORLD of great vocals. "Danny Boy" was written over a hundred years ago about a mother saying goodbye to her son going off to fight WW1.
You wanna hear great R&B voices? Check out the Platters -- My Prayer, The Great Pretender, Only You, Twilight Time, all with lead singer Tony Williams. Then click on The Righteous Brothers singing "Unchanged Melody" LIVE on TV from 1965. I grew up with all this music (sang it too) and will never steer you wrong.
Danny Boy was is an Irish folk song! Yes he could dance was Micheal Jackson’s major influence and was called Mr. Excitement!
He was 31 years old here. Jackie had over 50 Billboard hits, including six #1 R&B hits.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Wilson
Danny Boy is the story of a grandfather bidding his grandson goodbye as the grandson is going off to war.
That's not what the writer said.
Don't care what age you are, if you're a male singer with a range, you should make Jackie Wilson part of your curriculum...He mastered it.
Oh Man, was he great. He's from my time, and I loved him. My all time favorite. Black or White singer.
Of course that was his voice!
Hi 👋 and I first wanted to say TY for 😊❤sharing this Loving Uplifting ❤️ inspiring inspiration and Awesome Video and message from GOD'S Gift to this Incredible Talented Man Mr. Jackie Wilson and I Grew Up listening 🎶 to Him Sing and I/we who Loved and Knew Him Well will surely always Love ❤️ and Missed Him Dearly RIP 🙏 AMEN
Yes his voice is angelic just like that and Jackie was so smooth and cool in it, dig!!
You have never heard anything like that, and you never will.
The original Elvis. He could dance his ass off too. He has songs where you would think he sounded like Elvis but it was the other way around but he could do more with his voice than most.
The only thing you really need to know about the meaning of Danny Boy is that the song is a popular one for funerals, like Amazing Grace.
Believe it or not, but I (a white) was fortunate enough to see Jackie perform at a black nightclub in Nassau in the early 1960's and he had, with out a doubt, had a true gift from GOD and was, and is, truly, unforgettable!
U are absolutely right about this man.
I meet Jackie Wilson back in the 1969 at the fabulous Club Harlem in Atlantic City,N.J.His voice, has inspired my entire family young & old.I'm an OS an a forever fan of Mr. (Jackie Wilson)( Still) One of the greatest ever..🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Rest in peace my brother💜
About a sheep dog. Jackie Wilson was Mr Excitement practically untouchable with singing and performing.
Talent!
This is my first time listening to Jackie too
Wow yes the great great jackie wilson😚😚💯
My old-time fave singer of my time along with Elvis. They called him " Mr. Excitement". Please react to another great one by Jackie is " To Be Loved". Other great tunes by Jackie are " Night", Lonely Teardrops, Whispers Getting Louder.Jackie used to be a boxer. 👏👍👍❤️
There was only one Jackie Wilson. No others. ❤
Jackie's hair is "processed". Back in the day Black folk used lye and lard before hair products to relax their hair and then used greasy hair products got give it shape. If you watch the Temptations movie two of the members go the the barber shop to get their hair processed. One picks the Tony Curtis who was a white actor who was popular at the time. Processed hair also known as conked hair. Google it.
Jackie had an amazing, one of a kind voice. His stage presence was second to none.
Danny Boy is a traditional, folk song that is often sung at Irish funerals. Patty Labelle and The Bluebells also covered the song around this time. Check that one out too.
Danny Boy is an Irish melody (drinking song) set to lyrics about a young man going off to war and his father telling him he may not be alive when he returns. On the flip side, it's entirely possible that Danny Boy is killed in combat and fails to come home. His father's wish that he returns to visit his grave somehow is more a wish that Danny survives to have a full life, even if he is not around to see it.
I believe it is an old Irish song of a father sending his son to war.
A mother saying goodbye to her son who's going off to fight in WW1.
@@Steve52344 It seems we are both wrong - apparently the song dates back to 16th century?
@@gary17509 "Danny Boy," as an actual song, (not Londonderry Air) came into being when its lyrics were first written in 1910 then modified a few years later.
Jackie Wilson was nicknamed Mr.Excitement for good reason! Great artists don't die they live on through their music!
In a time when immigrating to another country was by ship, and communication with back home was non existent., this was written by a father saying farewell to his son. The father was telling his son that if he's dead when the son returns, "as 'dead' I well may be." to find his grave and tell him that he loves him, and knowing that the father will sleep in peace.. Many fled to the U.S, because of famine in their homeland, and departing, never saw their parents and family members again. No phones, no planes, mail (which took months) and illiterate families, and often facing discrimination in the U,S. Irish men who came here during the Civil War were conscripted into the conflict. If you know this, you can better appreciate the lyrics.
Oh he could dance What!! Boy I tell you what check out some Jackie’s other performances.
Danny Boy is a song about a friend grieving about a friend. And at the end he kneals at the grave
Yes he was good and can dance I love a woman a lover a friend go to higher and higher in to be love .that is why I love you so look you can find out more he love to dance lela
thanks for this! I had no idea that Jackie did this... this is an old "classic" Irish tune... lol Just goes to prove that a talented voice can do ANYTHING...
Jackie was the coolest man. Micheal Jackson idlized him. When he was little. Jackie was why Micheal become the showman he was. Wilson was the showmaster of his time.
The great and versatile Jackie Wilson. This is great but this is him Lip syncing over the recorded version. If you want to see who Jackie was go to the Shindig version of him singing this song “Live”.
MASTERFUL!!!
Good to see u like good music
Rumor has it that as young child Michael Jackson stood back stage and was able to copy his steps, that he did in other songs. He was an operatic trained singer. And this song is an old Irish Ballard. He was also a good friend to Elvis Presley. He didn't write this song it is a Irish song.
Jackie Wilson n Sam cooke top singers back then along side harry belefonte.
Listen to Jackie Wilson "Over the rainbow"....it's magical!
God Bless You....
The Greatest singer of all time!! Vocal range. Is 12 octave he also was a boxer
It's about a young man going to war and survives and returns home safely.
The hairstyle in those days were called Process
he was elvis best buddy when jackie got sick elvis paid the bills
HE WAS NAMED “MR. EXCITEMENT”
new subbie. Liking your channel.
The best to do it.
Yes he and Elvis were good friends that Elvis paid his medical bills when Jackie fell ill.
Jackie was huge back in the day he also loved Elvis Presley as a friend they were actually close. The song Danny Boy is an Irish tune that was around before Jackie but no one has done it better then Jackie in my view. Jackie was basically abandoned by the industry he died broke in his 40's after having a stroke that left him senile his fans paid for his funeral. Talk about a damn shame is an understatement Jackie was outright abandoned but he outlasted Elvis.
The hair style is a pompadour with a relaxer in it
The song is about a mother sending her son off to war.
Just a Relaxer
Jackie “Mister Excitement” Wilson could Sang. He didn’t write Danny Boy. It’s a Irish ballad. He’s telling someone he’s may not be around. Please come a say a Ave Maria, which is a prayer at his grave, if he’s dead. The hair the is a process, guys used conkalene , which was lye, to straighten their hair, would tie it up to keep the waves and curls. Malcolm X wore his hair like that until he converted to Islam.
His son Bobby tours and looks just like him. Jackie is the only performer equal to Elvis who was his good friend.
Nah. There are plenty of performers that are above Elvis. Sammy Davis jr, Jackie Wilson, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, sam cooke, nat king Cole, Ray Charles etc
He was the ( BEST ).
You got It Right

I don't know if I can give you a lot of music man. I'm afraid your head might explode. Hahaha
Jackie had a tragic life with a tragic ending. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Wilson
Jackie was the best!
You should check out Howard Huntsberry. He sings all of Jackie Wilson's songs and sounds just like him. He sang with a group called Klique and that's definitely worth listening to. His songs are A Woman A Lover A Friend and Lonely Teardrops!
brill cream
You have to listen to Alone At last.
It's about a father whos son is going to war
WHAT'S GOOD HAIR
Naw, man. Don't mess with no hair relaxer. Back then, he probably used Conk. It would burn the hell out of your scalp. It had lye in it which is what they put on dead bodies. As for Danny Boy, it's an old Irish folk song. As white as white gets. He didn't write it.
Her son is going of to war
NONE of the singers back then used ANY electronic device or enhancement. If a singer can't sing the song on his own then he's not a singer -- like all the no-talent performers we have today who can't sing a goddam thing. It's pretty sad.
Royal Crown palmade.
Research, all the answers
he was elvis. idiol
No sweetheart don’t do that to your hair sh.. was ratchet 🤣
Learn your history.
Why don't let people enjoy the song guy
Why don't play the song man without you continuing to interrupting dam you are selfish
