- Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, made landfall just after 3 p.m. Wednesday in Cayo Costa, Florida. CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave joins Lana Zak and Tanya Rivero with the latest from Tampa. Then CBS News meteorologist David Parkinson has the latest on where the storm is headed next.

Was in Port Charlotte for Charlie, August 13, 2004 at 3 pm. Very, very glad that I retired to the Midwest.
We lived in Naples 2004-2018. After Irma 2017, we had had enough. That was my parents retirement location and then they passed. Was their paradise but to live and work there, hard to thrive as middle income. We stayed way longer than we should have but couldn’t leave after 2008 recession but real estate finally built back up in worth by 2018. God help that area now. They’ve been building on every tiny piece of property available and the traffic has doubled. 2017 it was a mess for 6 months. God help that area this time. Most snowbirds haven’t made their trek yet from other states. This is just devastating fir that area.
We caught Frances and Jean back to back in Martin/St Lucie, moved to Michigan a year ago and miss the hurricanes tbh

An area that has light rain is safer to do a broadcast from. It moves away from directly hitting Tampa. You're the same people who comment "omg what an idiot why are they out there!?" When they do stand behind a dramatic ocean storm surge and strong winds.
Florida has a LOT of lakes, so its not going to piffle out for a long time.

Landfall was CAT 1, maybe CAT 2. The problem was the storm surge, not the winds. The backside of the system had winds from the NW blowing at 100 to 120, which developed a large surge. Only one thing more damaging than wind. Water

Scientists and engineers should be working on ways to stop these in their track. I understand satellites can detect an eye forming when its about 1/4
