  • Exclusive interview with Ossie Ardiles as he talks about growing up in Argentina and winning the World Cup and a glittering career at Spurs. Ossie sat down with Graham Hunter to recall how the Falklands conflict affected him during his time with Tottenham.
The Big Interview: Graham Hunter one-on-one with the biggest names in football - new podcast episodes every week.
Much of Ossie Ardiles' career was played out under a dark political cloud. Some of his friends at university in Argentina’s second city Córdoba were ‘disappeared’ - murdered by their own government. His cousin was killed early in the Falklands War. Ossie and his pal Ricky Villa were playing for Tottenham Hotspur when that conflict broke out and he felt isolated, abused, rootless. But after an unhappy spell in Paris he came back to White Hart Lane and helped Spurs win the UEFA Cup.
We talked about Argentina's 1978 World Cup win under legendary manager César Luis Menotti and how Ossie nearly missed the final against the Netherlands through injury. There’s also thoughts on Maradona v Messi; Mario Kempes; Leopoldo Luque; Micky Hazard; Glenn Hoddle and on José Mourinho’s chances at Spurs.
