Attitude. Skills. Plan.
Old school is an understatement.
Even my manager who knows Ken says that Ken went about learning the dot the wrong way, but Ken is the type who is never wrong...my manager knows this because he was having the same issue, UNTIL he started working with Scott Jedlinkski, and now he is a MSP certified instructor and a dot adherent.
The instructors I admire are all people who sre constantly hungry, constantly learning, and never sit back and act like they know everything.
Ken is older than I am, but not by that much. I have followed him for many, many years and he is living history of the shooting sports.
Yeah he's great
First Channel I watched after purchasing my pistol and applying for my CPL last year was the Wilson combat channel.
Ken and Massad Ayoob are treasure troves of knowledge. As much as I love those guys, this channel has helped me much more with self-defense aspects.
No disrespect to the legends over at Wilson Combat of course.
I appreciate the information that you always provide for us. Thank you
10 yards
10 seconds
90 or better on a B8 target
Wish that sort of summary would be added to these videos.
@@jimmeyers8960 much too slow. Men can charge 10 yds and stab you in 3.0 seconds, quite easily. some can do it in 2.5 seconds
There are two replies here that I’d like to respond to. First what ‘summary’ is missing? Second, this is a competency test, not a speed drill for an attacking person. Context in our training counts…
I had the absolute honor to train under him 20 years ago. A true no shi##er. God love him! I still do "the test" every time as my opening drill. Your 95 is better than 90% of cops. Just know , Fear the old guy in a profession where guys die young!
You convinced me to get a h&k p30 lem John. Loved it so much i went a got a second for the dry fire practice. Now i gotta get them sent to langdon tactical.
I found this through Master Ken.
Isn't Ken the dude that discounted the use of a red dot on a pistol on a YT video?
Yeah, he's not a fan and I think that's a mistake. Still, he's well-respected as a figure of history in the industry.
I cannot find the target you show with 4 B8's on one target. I checked Baker targets and nothing. Could you let me know where i can order? Thanks for ALL the info.
I don’t think it’s available. C2 Tactical has them made just for them I believe.
bakertargets.com/product/active-self-protection-target-2-250-pack/. There is that… those are actual B8 size targets but with the shapes inside them…
John - last time I posted, you gave me gouge on endocrinology blood work and how it helped you. I went to my annual VA appt shortly thereafter and asked for a testosterone and thyroid check. Both came back in the lower portion of the normal range. So evidently I can’t blame my weight on that! I guess I’ll just have to continue walking and pushing my fat ass away from the table!! VA has a weight loss program I’m going to try as well. I’m not terribly over weight (I’m 6’0” and 225), but I’d like to lose 35/40 lbs and get back down to my Sailor fighting weight.
You can do it! And it's great that your numbers are in the normal range, that's a good thing!
@@ASPextra Thanks for the encouragement, John!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I was under the impression that the 'Hackathorn' was shot at three distances.
That's the Super Test, which is an extrapolation of The Test.
I looked around more and found he has a variety of standards and tests. All good.
That drill should be the FIRST thing you do as soon as you get to the range. 100% cold, ZERO warmup.
Or, do it whenever you want.
Nothing like practicing 2 dry runs. And from high ready. No draw.
Very realistic.
Ok, let’s see the video of you doing it. Post me a link.
not sure what you do for a living or how you train, but all this "always train for real life stressful scenarios!" crap is bullshit. You get smooth and fast at the basics. Then you add stressors. That'a how you get solid while under stress/real life. Or.. do it your way. I mean, whatever. I cvame up through a very extensive tactical shooting background and mastering the basics was always first- no matter the level of training.
Great video. Just curious, why do you simulate recoil during your dry fire? Doesn’t this teach you to flench?
Reminds me to shoot my sights not a cadence.
@@ASPextra Okay, makes sense. I thought it may have something to do with returning your red dot to target. 🎯 I’m still learning with my dot.
Sounds a lot like LAV’s “The Test”. No surprising.
That’s not Vickers’ test. It’s Hackathorn’s.
i don't understand the scoring. 5 of 10 are misses? And that results in a 95?
It’s shot on a B8 target, so each shot can be worth 0-10 points depending where on the target you hit. The closer to the center the higher you score…. So there are no ‘misses’ in this run, just some 9 point shots vs 10….
Those Wilson guys are living in the past. The future is now old man!
I can’t stop looking at all the damage to the ceiling. 😅 That can’t be actual round impacts can it? How old would a range have to be, to collect that many scars.
Every indoor range I've ever been to has had ceilings looking like that. Even more so if the range offers rentals to any joe schmo off the street. You gotta remember most gun owners aren't very proficient either.
@@thatonedoood I’ve only been to a couple, and they are in some of the bigger store/range establishments - I suppose they keep stuff a lil more spruced up.
But cripes… maybe I shouldn’t feel as comfortable as I typically do when I’m in my lane, eh? 😅🤷🏻♂️
Even with as little as I expect out of the typical human, I sure never imagined that many folks could be that wild
You haven't shot much with the general shooting public, have you? These ranges might take a million rounds a year each, and people of all skill levels show up to shoot. The baffles are there for a reason homie!!
Have you been to an indoor range before and watched what people do?
@@danielweissenborn3508 yeah… granted, probably only a dozen times or so … but I never saw anyone doing anything but putting lead down range like most folks would want … that’s why it surprised me :)
so I haven’t watched any beginner classes or anything like that .. just hard for me to picture how it happens that much :)
I'm guessing that test wasn't designed for revolver shooters, was it?
Well, maybe if they had a 10-shot revolver. 😂
You shouldn't flinch your gun when you're doing your walk-through, it's a bad habit. Rather curl your finger to simulate trigger pull without breaking range rules and squeeze holding the ideal sight picture to burn in some short term muscle memory.
Moving it to simulate recoil helps folks understand to shoot their sites and not a cadence.
@@ASPextra Okay then.
I see your cat ears. I hate them.
Old advice is good advice, considering it's coming from a man who lived to be so old. So I agree with what Ken originally said, if you had to choose between a handheld light and a weapon light, go handheld. It just makes more logistical sense.
And lastly.
I want to see someone do this drill with a revolver. In fact. I'm in arizona. I want to find somewhere to do this drill on paper.

@@ASPextra no! I hate them more now. No fun. Nope.
@@ASPextra ey. I slept on it. And I wanted to resend that. I absolutely hate them.
And I still don’t care
@@ASPextra well. You should
is it halloween there ?

Are you wearing cat ears? Lol 🤦🏼♂️
Are you using emojis?
@@ASPextra Yes that's what they're for.. What are your kitty ears for? I don't think I wanna know
ruclips.net/video/PyknnWDEZZo/видео.htmlsi=53ET2NsXXJUDh3vQ
Imo, you should always start from the draw, I understand this is a marksman drill, p.s. hate the cat ears
I don’t believe you do understand that’s it’s a Marksmanship drill PS, your mom loves the ears.
@@ASPextra 😂 thanks John, love the content
Horrible drill. Cadence is a large part of the equation and this misses the mark. Bill drill is leaps above this one.
I think they each have their place. For you to call a drill like the Test, that's been around as long as it has, 'horrible' that tells me you are refusing to see the value on purpose or you can't do it. But if it's other than that, can you define you the WHY behind your lable?
@@ASPextra it’s been around a while but not so relevant nowadays is it? It’s been surpassed by better drills that develop skills that can transfer to real life shooting scenarios. Bill drill and El pres cover all the bases. It’s not horrible just slow. If the par time was closer to 5 secs now we’d be talking.
You're assuming others have your skill set. Let's see yours on camera amigo. As a basic test of skills it's phenomenal.
Stop with the cat ears already
Why does what other men wear frustrate you so much?
ruclips.net/video/PyknnWDEZZo/видео.htmlsi=53ET2NsXXJUDh3vQ
I can't take you serious with those ears on
ruclips.net/video/PyknnWDEZZo/видео.html
At best let's just say the ears won't come off as manly or maturish.
They were cute as heck on my teen daughter who dressed her head like an Anime kitten for Halloween. But that's my opinion. You values may vary.
Tell me you’re a grumpy old man without telling me you’re a grumpy old man

Those headphones are not it. Distracting and can’t take a man serious when he’s wearing cat ears
Ask your doctor if lightening up is for you.
