  • The Lateral Line of the body is an untapped potential of movement opportunity. Using the sides of the body is unfamiliar, as compared to bending over, bridging, or rotating. Side flexion is a mystery, and restricted.
This episode covers “big frame” mobility stretches to open up the side flexion of the body, a normally restricted area which can be a secret key to unlocking a lot of “tightness”, especially for lower back, overhead mobility and even in the hips.
Two of my favourite stretches for this which are bodyweight only -
    1. Lateral Squat and Reach
    2. Doorframe Lateral Stretch
I go through each in detail and how you can modify the line of stretch and increase intensity.
Use the awareness from the segmental tilts learnt in the first episode to notice how the neck, ribs and pelvis are positioned in these stretches.
Even though they are bodyweight, this puts a lot of work into the sides of the body.
A starting protocol of using both stretches, held at 45-90s each for 3 sets is recommended. As you become familiar, you can modify with the variables as shown, and increase hold times and overall set volume.
The lateral squat and reach I learnt from Juan Rueda and the doorframe stretch comes from Emmet Louis.
