There isn't one?! I haven't beaten it yet, but it's ridiculously easy now...and it was already considered way too easy in the original. A Hard Mode is absolutely needed. Otherwise might as well play on Breezy. Normal Mode is just as easy.
@@GreatGonzalez That'll be fun. And the random hard enemy is fun. I just wish there was, like...an option to have one in EVERY fight maybe? That would be a nice challenge.
If I had one major critique it's that the game is not balanced for the chain bonus and party member swapping mid-battle. The party member swapping you can ignore, but the timed attack chain bonus is pretty busted and it's kind of a shame because it's a cool feature. So hopefully they patch in a hard mode that is rebalanced for those two features and it'll add a good amount of challenge.
As someone new to this game with the remake, I find the fanbase's Mallow erasure to be wild. Like, yea, Geno's design is cool and he's definitely the strongest party member, but Mallow has so many more moments where he's able to express his character and be a lovable fluffy boy! I found myself way more attached to him than Geno 😅
Agreed! I didn’t even have it on my birthday list at all until I saw the boss rematches and 3D culex! After I saw that I realized it was different enough from the originals. My birthday is tomorrow from the date of recording
It would be nice if they released an update that gave us two new difficulty settings. Classic mode, which remives chain bonuses, Triple Attacks, and the Perfect Timed Hit burst attack. Just make it feel exactly like the original. And then an Expert mode, which keeps the new features, but rebalances the game to accommodate them and make it more challenging
@darius8715 Just give up... Mother 3 has too much stuff in it that gives localizers a headache and would stir up controversy. I love Mother 3 but from Reggie having (big pink lips), the magypies, Tane Tane Island. Mother 3 was a mess
Kids, please enjoy! Hope it leads to continue the series since they got the base… I played the first one so many times, I can’t count. Culex looks great in 3D!
Two hopes I have: 1. We get an additional update that gives us a hard mode (wishful thinking, I know). 2. I hope that Nintendo finally gives us a sequel to this game with all characters returning + 1-2 additional ones.
Since we got a remake, I wouldn't mind at all if a sequel didn't have Mallow or Geno. Much like Paper Mario, each game deserves to have its own identity. But cameos would be cool. Or maybe make them into secret optional party members, like the one in Paper Mario. As a kid, I dreamed of a sequel where all 5 of the SMRPG characters were captured and had to be rescued by a group of unlikely heros. They were a Toad, a Bob-Bomb, a Chain Chomp, and a Star I think. In hindsight, Luigi would be a good choice for main character. Super Luigi RPG!! Yoshi could work, too.
17:54 It makes me happy to hear this complaint from someone familiar with the original. The remake is my first time with this game and I had the same experience. Not game ruining by any means, just led to a few frustrating moments.
I love this remake. I have lots of little nerdy complaints - much like I do with the original, because I'm so familiar with it - but this is a dream come true. Very faithful remake. I agree that it's too easy and needs a hard mode. Magic was almost always worse than Attack in the original, and now it's even more pronounced. They fixed Bowser with his new weapon, and Mallow loves his new one, too. But Geno's sort of left without a role. His magic is the same as it's ever been and his attack is now outclassed by Bowser. With the swap mechanic, Geno's kinda' just become my Geno Boost dispenser and sits on the sidelines a lot. Peach is fun to use as a pocket healer. And Mallow is great to build glass cannon and swap in to nuke something with a weakness.
Agreed. If they had simply balanced the game with the new battle features it would have been perfect. That said, a hard mode would be a nice free update.
After finally getting to play Super Mario RPG for the first time, I just have one question… Why do people like Geno so much again? I didn’t get it before playing the game, and I get it even less now that I have. The dude’s character is sooo flat and wooden (no pun intended). Like, Mallow is just so much better, and yet people shaft him for Geno for some reason.
Because he is cool and an absolute power house, yeah they didn’t give much to his character but we honestly didn’t need it back then and they gave enough to where he was always mysterious. Honestly it’s his awesome spells that made him so popular I think. The fact he has a move that can one shot enemies also made him popular too.
Those post game bosses are nuts! Especially the last one. Even at the max level and almost all the best equipment it was still really tough. The main game though was too easy. A hard mode would've been greatly appreciated. Other than that though I loved it!
As someone who plays alot of modern rpgs, its a little quirky and I can definitely sense that late 1990s squaresoft vibe. Definitely more ff7 than ff6. Star ocean 2 remake feels like a modern game but super Mario rpg feels like an older game with a fresh coat of paint.
This is my first time playing through this game and I’m loving it, but I completely agree about the difficulty and would like a hard mode to be honest. I hope this leads to a Super Mario RPG 2
I enjoyed the SNES original back in the day and I wish I had a Switch so I could replay this game and others on the Switch. If I were to update this with 1 thing, I think it would it would be nice if they added in Luigi as a playable character.
I'm at the Axem Rangers battle now, and so far I think it's a really faithful remake. With just a few tweaks, I think it would be perfect. 1-make the splash damage and ability to swap out party members in battle exclusive to the breezy mode. 2-Give us the option to turn off cut scenes like Mallow's introduction, Bowser breaking down Booster's door and Peach floating down from her tower. There's nothing wrong with them, I just feel like the game loses a little bit of its charm. 3-I love that the environments are more full instead of just empty space at the edge, but there are a few areas where it's hard to tell where you can and can't go, so I would still put some kind of border, like a fence or bushes.
About the script of the game, in case you’re curious, what you’ve said doesn’t apply to the game in other languages. You may know the game was only available in Japanese and English back in the days, and now it’s been translated into more languages which is a good thing. What’s interesting is that they’ve made many more changes to the script in the new languages - well at least in French - to bring it up to more modern standards. For example, the bazooka joke has been changed. The “Mushroom Kingdom” area has been changed into “Mushroom Castle” which makes sense because the Mushroom Kingdom is supposed to be the entire thing and not just a local area. Considering most French players (as well as German, Spanish, Italian ones, etc.) didn’t play the game at the time because it didn’t get a European release, they won’t notice any of these changes after all so I’d say it’s probably for the best!
As someone who didn’t play the original, the only thing I would have liked is a small feature to get a hint on where to go next or clues for being stuck. There were a few times where the game just goes “ok good luck” and leaves you with nothing. Even if the journal was a bit more detailed about what you’ve done to hint at the next task
Did you not read the dialog or something? They ALWAYS tell you where to go. Like Mallow suggesting you guys go ask his granpa, or Peach suggesting you go ask the Chancellor, or suggesting they go check out Seaside Town since there are a lot of people to ask about the stars.

The seed and fertilizer were always meant to be super secrets, even back in the original game. One could argue that they were "guidebook sellers," or that they were supposed to be mysteries which you discovered by chance. The remake is relatively easy already so it doesn't stand out as much, but in the original, the Lazy Shells border on gamebreaking, especially when the armor shell is given to P.Toadstool/Peach, so it makes sense that they were something you might not figure out in a normal first playthrough (unless you had a guide of course)
