Constructive criticism :) -- I just want to start off by saying that you and Luna make a great team and i can see the connection between you guys so much! whenever there's a slip up and you almost fall off, Luna is loyal and patient and very calm and waits for you to get back on, she doesn't run off and get scared which is a great sign. she really trusts you! However i do understand that she is green and can be a bit of a handful, so i do give you props for taking on that challenge. The only problems that i see affecting your results in shows and Luna's reaction to request, is that you dont give her enough of a release over the jumps, and you dont stay "over" to let her finish her jump. instead, you start out with a small release, your hands planted maybe six inches above her wither, and about halfway through the jump your hands pop up from her neck and tug her mouth on the landing side, which can result in a knocked pole and an uncomfortable pony :/ sometimes, depending on the horse, their mouths can get very numb from this type of release, and you will have less control over her brakes. another thing that you do is you is you kind of plop down onto her back as she's landing which isn't very comfortable either- what you should do is grab a chunk of her mane halfway up to her ears and keep your butt out of the saddle and your hands planted into Luna's neck until one or two strides after the jump. When you go to sit, dont just plop down, try gently sitting, and almost melting into the saddle to give Luna a comfortable and respectful transition from light seat to full seat. You dont have to take my advice since i dont know Luna enough to tell you what to do for sure, but i think you should at least try it.
I've been reading some of the comments here and I say you can jump your horse whatever height you want! Your trainer wouldn't put the jumps up if she thought you couldn't do it. And Luna looks very strong and pulls you over the jump. I can completely relate and it's a lot easier to "fix" the problem from a keyboard than when you're actually riding the horse. You two are doing great together so keep it up Maya! :)
I totally agree I think people need to relax bc they don't know what it is really like in the saddle! A trainer would never make a rider do a jump at a certain hight if he or she did not think that the ride or the horse is ready or if it would put them in any way harm or danger.:)
You and Luna look great! You guys have improved so much! And my heart skipped a few beats when you knocked that one jump down, I thought you were going to fall off! Good job for staying on!
Some advice: You seem to arch your back or make it round. It helps you glide through the wind easier when your stomach is almost touching the saddle and your back is not rounded! 😊😉
You've an amazing horse and you can do a lot with her, i just think that you should wait more befor the jump, sometimes you jump befor e her and so you don't do a clear round, or lose her control after the jump, or you can fall, ad she's green sometimes she needs an extra help to put the right distance. Something that helped me a lot with this mistakes was riding without saddle but doing the 'trot movement'. You both are amazing, bop e you enjoy this advices
hey just a tip for jumping Luna try to package her together and organize her a little more by adding leg to hand. Then she will be with you a little more and you will be able to get even tighter turns! This will also keep her off of her front end Also I find sitting really deep in the saddle helps tons! And if you keep your elbows bent more and your arms not so stiff organizing will help! She looks great though!
at that first clip of the schooling show, she was throwing her head, and well, basically looked like she was being really annoying. You handled her amazingly! you go girl!
I can tell you guys are learning so much in such a short amount of time! **Constructive, don't feel like you need to listen to me either!**: I noticed your arms are a little stiff, usually while trotting. I have the same problem! My trainer has told me to try to keep my arms relaxed and in the same spot (as funny as that sounds). Basically just try to keep your arms in the same area (as in don't bring them up with your body when you rise to the trot; in other words bend your elbows accordingly as you sit/rise if that makes sense). I hope this helps you in some way! In other words you both are making tremendous progress, I can't wait to see what's in store for you guys! Great riding! (PS: I am not trying to be rude about the constructive stuff, if it bothers you it wasn't intended to! Just trying to help😊)
a good trick for keeping your shoulders back is when your flatting is just think about pushing your shoulder blades together and really exaggerating it so that you will slowly build the muscle memory in your back muscles.
The only thing that I see wrong with your riding is that I think you should just bring your leg a little farther back behind the girth. And I can tell that you have been working on your eq over jumps because you've improved SOOO much and you and Luna are a PERFECT match! You guys were made to be together!! I love you so much, and I've been a subscriber of yours even back in the first video of My Equine Addiction! I hope to become as big as a RUclipsr as you! Ilysm!❤️
Great job! The one really big thing that I think would help a lot is pushing your shoulders back. I know I had to work on that a lot and I've just gotten good at keeping them back not too long ago. I used this back brace type of thing from equifit it that seemed to work really well! GREAT JOB
i love it whatever video i watch of hers, i never see her use a whip :) i have never used a whip on storm because she is always very laid back, but this makes me smile x
I'm just going to share some ideas, please don't take any offense to this, it is just what worked for me: - In my (amateur) opinion, you should try to get Luna more forward and active (that doesn't mean faster), especially in the trot. I used trot poles (or just ground poles) slightly wider then my horse's stride, to encourage him to go further and taller with his stride. It worked for us. Despite that, you are both looking great and I hope you're having fun!!!
I'm still a learning rudder but did she look a bit stiff in the jumps. 3:27. And the horse looked like he/she did not like that bit in her moth should she have loosened the reins?
Luna's a perfect horse to be show jumping on considering you guys jump so much better when she's got some speed :) you guys look really great and have improved so much!!!
I love luna she is a gorgeous mare you are so lucky to have an amazing horse like her, she has lovely paces love your channel you are an amazing rider also is Luna shod? Many thanks xx
unfortunately Luna is quite a large and heavy horse but since she is so heavy and large it will be difficult to turn her into a jumper because of the sharp turns she will need to take but will struggle a lot to do which I suggest (don't shoo me, just a tip) you work on that. A lot of people work on tight turns over small jumps so the horse gets the hang of it because Luna is really and will in the future struggle with that
I may be wrong and correct me if I am but I think the reason maya fell of and those poles were knocked down was just purely because Luna doesn't lift up her head and it must be awfully hard for maya to keep it up while concentrating on the jump and keeping her going at a fast yet steady paste! Not what everyone else is saying about position and distance and blah blah blah! Luna is massive and maya is tiny! 😂😂😂😁
Hi, really like your channel but I noticed she likes to take off at the last minute, I've had that problem and I tried spreads which really helped to get the jump more scopey and to get them to jump wider which should also transfer to up rights thus encouraging them to jump from the correct distance, also letting her have more release when you jump should help :) x
Another thing is that I noticed you kept letting Luna turn the corner on the wrong lead! 🙊 I am going through the same thing with my horse! Right before the jump just ask for a lead change and right when you land, pull the new outside rein to make sure she gets it! It will create bad habits if you let them turn the corners on the wrong lead. 🐴☺️
It must be so hard to sit to her because she's so on the forehand. Loving your position and seat in the show clips though! My heart was in my mouth at those planks when she took them out- well sat!!
I love watching your videos so much! I was wondering what Rae's meant? That may sound really dumb but honestly I have no idea. I was also wondering how you did your hair for your lesson? It was off your back and I was just wondering if you flipped it into your helmet or what? Thank you so much I love you and Luna 💙
Okay this is all constructive so please don't take any offense to this; I'm not expert, this is just what I noticed. Luna LOVES to take the short distance to a jump, which in turn causes you to get popped out of the saddle. I know you want her calmer over jumps, so when I say push, I don't mean speed up. I'm saying that a few strides out from the jump, SINK into a full seat and really push(hold her w your legs) and force her to jump from the correct distance. If you think she's going o chip, PUSH her into NOT chipping. Does that make sense? Half seat is comfortable, but is typically the least helpful when training. Full seat will be your BFF. Otherwise you're going to keep chipping which is dangerous as it causes her to knock rails, and it isn't exactly aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It's hard, but you can def do it, you both have amazing potential. Also, try not to come out of your 2-point too fast over the jump. You should still be sunk into 2-point while in the air, not starting to come down. By coming down too fast you're likely to pop Luna in the mouth, and be very unbalanced. I think if you fix these two things, your riding will improve tremendously. You both are a lovely pair and the best of luck to you! Again, not trying to be rude in any way, I'm solely trying to help!:-)
I think Luna does than because she is green. I agree that's the way to fix it but I think she's green and it will come with training. j could be wrong though.
I agree as well. Maya's equitation is a bit all over the place, not horrible though...and YES I kept noticing Luna adding short strides to the jumps. I know that her head tossing can be distracting too. Keep working at it, things are lookin good (:
MyEquine .Obsession I think you might mostly be right, but sometimes I find that pushing is not the option..a couple of times the distance was good from th turn but she tried to take out a stride, and Luna dint go enough....maybe just trust your eye more HayItsMaya and not aways "push" to the jump, but sometimes just sit up and wait for the distance that is already there. Otherwise I do agree with MyEquine .Obsession Like she said, FULL SEAT hahaha...when you come out of your 2poit too fast that can cause her hind end to also come down sooner, which can (not aways) cause a rail down... But good job, You've come really far, I can see that both of you have improved loads!
Giovanna Assumpção thanks for replying to me! I agree that pushing is obviously not always the answer, I'm just saying that if it looks like Luna is going to chip, Maya needs to push to take the longer, more correct stride instead of letting Luna come right up to the base of the jump. If she is green, I would implant this into her brain immediately so she does not learn to always take the short stride. In jumpers, it may not matter, but hunters? It could potentially be a huge problem. Regardless of what discipline you do though, you should still be getting all the basics down in training. Again, only trying to help! You're doing great so far :)
I also think that she needs to close her hands bc Luna pulls right through her. Maybe try setting up ground poles before jumps to help Luna & Maya know where the takeoff spot is. Maya, roll your shoulders back and sit up a little more, it will help with Luna short stepping and throwing you out of the saddle. Be balanced!
You are a beautiful pair and are perfect together I was upset at first when I heard "my equine addiction" was ending but I understand it is for the best I will sub to both as you two are amazing riders and youtubers
I think maybe you should work on half haults instead of bracing with your hands when she hauls you around (i have the same problem with my andalusian lol) but you guys look fantastic! she is gonna make such a good jumper! does she have any draft or percheron in her?
Not hating at all and I understand that she's green but maybe shorten your stirrups 2 maybe 3 holes and you'll get a much better position to help you go along with some of the funky jump and just have a better position in general😊 ~Cierra (this is a shared channel that I'm commenting from)
Hey Maya, I'm still kinda new to riding, and I was wondering if you (or any of these other wonderful horse people) had any tips for cantering. I've been able to canter hands free (on a lunge line, sadly), but I'm still grasping for the saddle any time my horse changes speed or anything unusual happens. Thanks so much!
32ANB first thing you should do is isolate the problem; why are you grabbing for the saddle? are you scared? are you unbalanced? do you not know how to ride the canter so you lack confidence? once you figure out what the problem is, it's a lot easier to come up with a solution. (:
itsa kaykip It'd say it's a mix of being thrown off balance, as well as maybe a little scared (though the thought of falling never enters my mind :P). Though you may right about a little lack of confidence. If it is mostly balance, do you think riding bareback (not cantering though) would help? Any suggestions would be great. ;)
riding bareback and riding with no stirrups are always great for helping balance! what i've found also helps is 'standing up' in your stirrups and trying not to let yourself tip forward or back, and A LOT of posting trot (especially with no stirrups, if you're comfortable with that). another thing to work on is your core strength. if you have weak muscles you're not going to be able to properly hold yourself up and together during transitions and coming down from them. spend some time doing a lot of walk to trot and trot to walk transitions really focusing on staying tall, shoulders back, and relaxed. not throwing yourself into your upward transitions and not letting yourself fall forward on your downwards. this will help you build confidence in yourself mentally and it will help you develop the muscles you need physically - both of which will help you be confident in cantering. another obvious thing that most people tend to forget is your breathing! long, low, calming breathing is extremely important. if you're holding your breath you're more than likely tensing your muscles and you will lose all of the elasticity in your movements that are important in creating smooth, quiet gaits. something that helped me was my trainer always used to say "you're on a horse, so enjoy the ride!". sometimes i get so caught up in what i'm "doing wrong" that i forget to actually just relax and enjoy riding. (: however if it's fear, then that's a whole other topic.
What you said make so much sense, and I just wanna say thank you so much for taking the time to answer! :) I will definitely try all the things you said. I want to try posting trot with no stirrups, though the mare I ride has a very large trot so if I lack the physical strength it'll be hard to ride. :P And I don't think it's fear when cantering, though if it is then I hope I'll get over it. I mean, I never outright think "I'm gonna fall" or "I'm gonna hurt myself" but it could be an underlying thing. In all my riding I've never fallen off (though I've had some close calls recently), so it may be an underlying thing of "this might be it." I'm just sorta waiting for the day I fall of to know what it's like, cause I know it's inevitable that I'll probably fall off one day.
i'm not sure what your situation is like, but if it's possible, you could see if there's a horse you could ride that has a smoother trot for you to practice no stirrup work on. alternatively you can also see if keeping your current horse extremely collected (almost to the point of walking if necessary) helps make the movement easier to ride. as far as falling goes, really try not to think about it. your recent close calls could have shook your confidence in yourself and in your horse which is why you may be hesitant because sometimes cantering can come off as a more 'out of control' gait. if you have access to a good round pen I would also suggest asking if you could practice cantering off the lunge line in there for a few minutes at the end of your lessons/rides before you cool out your horse. the smaller space helps you feel more secure because there's less room for the canter to go 'out of control' and staying on the circle is a good way to encourage your horse to slow down naturally. ultimately though, share your concerns with your trainer and if they don't do everything they can to help you progress and feel safe and secure while doing it, (if you can) you may need to look into a different place to ride. i hope some of what i've said helps, but always ask your trainer before trying any of this stuff on your own. I can't see what is happening and I don't know what your horse is like temperament/experience wise so take everything I say and apply it in a way that properly fits your situation. (:
Wow, a lot of these comments aren't constructive :( I have noticed luna is a lot like my mare when jumping as she tanks on the forehand and doesn't use her hind end to sit herself up in front of the jump in order to get less of a ping jump which causes you to lose your balance. I think by doing lots of work suited to building a stronger hind end for her would be suited. But good job, I love your channel and videos :)
Also she may be throwing her head around if her bit is a single joint.. I 100% recommend getting a double joint with a link in the middle! It stopped my gelding from throwing his head are the jump :)
I love Luna but the only thing is that u not working with luna. When luna is coming up to a jump push with urban knees to her stride. also relax in the saddle it will really help u and Luna.
I would love it if you maybe posted in text on the video what you were working on particularly in each clip so we can all learn with you! Luna is beautiful and you ride her excellently! Hard work will pay off!
Try to completley remove your leg from her side, you can see this in the video where youre working with no stirrups, it will make her more responsive when you do use your leg and also loosen your legs for dressage riding and has benefits with more relaxed knees whilst jumping so yaass. Still look really good though! You have alot of potential for your dressage position though👏🏽
I thought the same thing. She's absolutely talented and has tons of room for growth. It looks like they are still fighting each other a little though. Great partnerships definitely take time ☺️
Oh thank you :) yes it's so easy to get frustrated and hold onto her with my legs so I can see where she would kinda become numb to listening when I actually put leg on!
Yasssss!! Luna's lead changes!!! Awesome! You are doing so good with her!
Luna's shape over jumps has improved so much!
Luna is actually the cutest 😍

Great job Maya!! I can see Luna loves jumping! Great job staying on!
Luna looks sooooooooo good in blue!
Was I the only one that almost had a heart attack when Luna knocked that jump? Great job staying on and getting 7th! ~♥
LouisianaEquestrian♥ haha yeah a little bit scary ;p but thank you so much!!
That scared me too 😖
+HayItsMaya how come u wasn't wearing a show jacket? Just out of curiosity. Was it because it was to hot or the judges just didn't care
some show its a bit more laid back.
some show are bit more laid back. Geez I have really good engrish
I absolutely love how you're not afraid to be your funny self! Riding is on point and Luna looks excellent :) ilysm!
Haha thank you !! All rides can be a little rough ;)
+BehindxBlueEyesx you blind bitch
+TimeToPurge xoxo Wow you have the nerve to talk to me like that? Guess someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed :)
BehindxBlueEyesx i meant it in a funny way like "u bliiiiind bitch"
Hmm that's not funny to me at all
I'm jealous on how you stuck on after the knock on that jump. I would've fallen right off. You've come so far since the beginning. I love it!!
Luna is such a cutie going over the jumps, you two looked really awesome!! Especially towards the end of the video!!!
I've been reading some of the comments here and I say you can jump your horse whatever height you want! Your trainer wouldn't put the jumps up if she thought you couldn't do it. Love you both
Omfg Luna is so kind to you, a normal horse would have refused that jump after having lost balance! You two are so good together!
Love watching you ride!

Love the commentary "yaaaaas maya" "noooooooo" haha shame you knocked that jump because you rode the combination before that so beautifully!
Luna is so pretty and your equine is great!!! You looked awesome at your show! What did you place?
Great Job!!:)I find that when your posting in the trot you tend to twist your right hip forward in the left direction.
Both of you look so good! You can tell Luna loves jumping as well! :)
I love how she goes from kinda slow to IM AN OLYMPIAN HORSE!!!
i love it whatever video i watch of hers, i never see her use a whip :) i have never used a whip on storm because she is always very laid back, but this makes me smile x

yay well done you look great she looks very well controlled

Otherwise I do agree with MyEquine .Obsession
Like she said, FULL SEAT hahaha...when you come out of your 2poit too fast that can cause her hind end to also come down sooner, which can (not aways) cause a rail down...
You two look amazing together! Your eq is amazing (can I have please) ;) and Luna looks amazing! I love the saddle pad and the polos btw!
Cammy Kazemir I would watch MyEquineAddiction's All About Luna or meet Luna Video to make sure, but I think half Percheron.
Cammy Kazemir Luna's a Percheron Thoroughbred cross.
Yeah. She's a TB x Percheron.
She is a Percheron TB x
you should do a two-point over the jumps but other iwse you look awesome!
Where did you get the Aqua saddle pad ???? I love it
I love you guys so much and the only thing I would say is stay in 2 point a little longer but that's all otherwise u guys r completely perfect❤️😍💗💜🐴
Looking good! Luna is improving a lot :) your eq is improving heaps too, (not that it was bad before but I know you wanted to work on that :) )
How high do you and Luna usually show? You guys loom great together!
When your trainer says "stay back" is she talking about holding your reins back? Just curious
+Katya Lammey when ever my trainer says stay back it normally means chest up and don't fall forward. :)
Was that the Second time you have fallen off luna? :)
Is it just me or does that saddle have a bad fit? It seems to move around a lot when you jump ..
I don't see it move.
I see it too. It also moves up and down when she's posting. It may not be the fit of the saddle but it may be cause it's too far forward
Maybe is like a English saddle thing because all my English saddles do that to!
+Abigail Graham my English saddle doesn't do that, it's probably the brand of saddle maybe, mine is a Wintec.
Thank you to everyone who replied to my comment and agreed!! Haha really made me confident in my advice-giving skills and riding! :-)
You and luna look better and better only thing is maybe to release a little bit more 😍😍
You both look so good! So proud :') Luna is jumping so well! :)
I love Luna but the only thing is that u not working with luna. When luna is coming up to a jump push with urban knees to her stride. also relax in the saddle it will really help u and Luna.
not urban knees . knees
You look great wit her! :D
Hi Maya! Have you ever had a really bad fall where you lost your confidence? if so, do you have any advice in getting back?
Watch raleighlink14's most recent video! :)
April Maclake ^ how about avoid raleigh at all costs lol. She doesn't know what she's talking about
Billie Neeteson I love your response lol
Billie Neeteson OMG!!!! Finally someone who agrees with me.
Billie Neeteson i second this 😂😂
I would love it if you maybe posted in text on the video what you were working on particularly in each clip so we can all learn with you! Luna is beautiful and you ride her excellently! Hard work will pay off!
On the competition round i think you should be careful to put your shoulders a bit more back . Amazing rider btw !!! Love yout channel 😉
For the shows outside
Why does Luna put her head so low down when she jumps but she is the most beautiful horse I've ever seen!!!!!!
