The Evil Within 1 is one of the most underrated games I ever played. It's basically Alan Wake, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill perfectly blended into 1 game. I played it on PC in 2022 and it still looked AMAZING, and I love how Anson Mount voiced the main character. Awesome game!

I think it’s perfectly rated. Not completely unknown but it’s a game you buy on sale unless you absolutely love horror games and need SOMETHING to play. It doesn’t capture half of the environmental or psychological horror of silent hill and the puzzles aren’t as good as RE or SH either.
I don’t think you can go wrong with this game though, especially considering how bad most horror games are nowadays

I love both of them for their own reasons, I do agree with you about it being freakier. The bosses were truly tense and terrifying and none of the bosses in the second game were really any threat except for the chainsaw blob chick(which you could completely skip anyways). I think I really enjoyed the exploration and more open world in two and the horror was more on point in the first. I really like both stories but I also really liked Ruvik. I was quite a fan of stefano in two but they ended his plot line relatively earlier and had no real direction with whom they wanted to be the antagonist in two. I could sit here all day writing about why I love both games honestly. It's easily my favorite horror series of all time(resident evil is a close second).

@@alexanderfreeman3406 did you play the dlc or read any of the field notes. Ruvik's motivation is kinda hidden within the lore in the game, which is kinda dumb regarding the main antagonist.

@@readifer I did play the DLC, it was terrible. Boring and buggy, and not to mention insulting that they would charge money to finish the story you already paid $60 for.
As for Ruvik, he’s a completely milquetoast “disfigured villain” trope. He built STEM to bring back his sister, was betrayed and trapped in it, and now want to steal Leslie’s body to get out. It’s not bad, it’s just bland.
As for what he actually does in the game, it’s a whole lot of sweet FA. He barely ever shows up, usually only when the developers couldn’t figure out how to transition to the next set piece. Then he just leaves, despite the fact that he controls STEM and could literally kill you by thinking it.

    • @readifer
      @readifer 2 года назад +20

@@alexanderfreeman3406 that's all fair. I personally liked the kidman episodes of the dlc but i don't disagree with you at all that, that should have been in the base game to begin with. i just feel that when you put ruvik up next to the complete misdirection of any antagonist in the sequel that ruvik was at least "decent" when it comes to the second game i honestly enjoyed stefano and his joker-esque insanity and unpredictability all in the name of art. Then they kill him off and throw in this priest dude completely from left field. They just really didn't know what they wanted to do when it came to the sequel. I love the sequel from a videogame standpoint but i personally feel the story was stronger in the first game.

@@sxb2andtheotherguys I have mixed feelings about the Evil Within 2, as someone who has recently bought TEW1, which I have been wanting to play since it came out. From what I've seen, TEW2 a lot of merits but also a lot of draw backs, especially considering how deviated it was from the first entry, which is what compelled me to the series in the first place. I will happily admit that I liked the Stephano section of the game and *loved* anima side-quest, but I feel like the father theodore and myra sections fell a bit flat.

    • @shegon111
      @shegon111 2 года назад +20

@@sxb2andtheotherguys The second game was a really underwhelming experience, to the point I actually hate it.
We went from fast-paced action to rummaging through every trash can on the level while crawling on your knees all this time.
In terms of gameplay it became a shitty TLOU clone with a very poor balance, in which no reward on the level was worth the resources spent on it. In particularly stupid cases, we received the same type of resources we spent to get the reward, but 2 times less.
In terms of story I was facepalming hard every 2 minutes because of how the plot, narration and dialogues degraded. In the first game, design of the bosses and their gameplay functions were closely related to the story. The plot itself had a lot of intrigues, and there was this delight feeling when the intrigues were revealed, and you understand the idea behind the boss or location.
In the second game, there are no intrigues (beside one with MC's wife and it was really underwhelming in the end), therefore, there is no delight from the reveal. Design of some bosses itself is not bad, but in general everything has been greatly simplified.
The last drop was a dumb straightforward fanservice with the bosses of the first game and this attempt to squeeze out a tear from the player in the end (it didn't work).

I don't know it's kind of a setback from resident evil 6.. I didn't see any actual playground slide mechanics.. the ultimate in slide mechanics.. but you know modern games don't have those cool little things like player agency anymore.. shit you can't even lean left and right in the recent releases.. despite having a VR version that lets you LOL.. man, even this is is like night and day by comparison to a modern game.. still, 2014 and we are over the curve and down the slide.. the slide downward in standards!
Screw your graphical fidelity.. give me player agency first.. the kind that used to be standardized in 2004 before regressing and flatlining then almost getting good and then just going right back.. it's like everybody complains about quick time events and yet modern games are essentially nothing but a quick Time event.. except instead of like an attempt at interactivity, you just hit a button in the context action for everything happens and nothing outside of it.. and that's if you have that context action LOL, I can safely say most of the resident evil modern games did not.. if anything it's like going back to the roots.. originally adventure puzzle games where entirely contact space with the full motion video 2D isometric etc.. now it's 3D, but it's the exact same context prompts that we had back in the days of fantasmagoria, just without you know the exciting novelty of the interaction LOL.. so usually just kind of to move the plot along.. hell on video consoles, the game even aims for you LOL.. since the controller design stagnated right about when they were about to you know actually make some headway.. as soon as the game started playing for you suddenly it was the exact same thing for 20 years...
and even still we have resident evil 6 Max Payne 3 and and to a lesser extent this game.. also the Wolfenstein and riddick games that were you know designed by people that were actually trying to push the platforms, which probably comes from there inception in the demo days.. and then you know just not dropping all of their standards or at least improving on some and keeping the bare Bones of others, unlike their sister studio arcane which is just you know been this long and steady decline towards late stage cephalytic consillitis which is all the more tragic as they were previously still trying right up into the point where Collotonio left... But you could see with Dishonored, the way the hands were coming out of the side of the screen versus dark Messiah where everything just really felt like it was your actual body.. and the sword play was far more closer to user control, the environments tailored towards that.. then with prey, what should have been returned to form was the worst form, with a return or attempt at function.. and then with death loop they.. well they had a really good thing going and then they redid everything and made it about as bad as it possibly could have been if you were starting from where they had it pretty decent when those first trailers came out LOL and you know stripping out any of the melee interaction whatsoever LOL cuz it it didn't work with their invasion mode cuz that matters.. and then what was it.. latest release was that online generic shooter..? So that's that's yeah...
I'll give tango some credit as far as interaction goes they were trying something different and they've always seemed to push in that direction often without success.. or at least full cohesion, and ghostwire Tokyo is definitely both a good sign that this is still a thing and a bad sign for the rest of everything but the triple a industry LOL.. just proving once again that even if you get to lick the frosting on your cake your mouth's going to get washed out with soap and the cake will be smushed in front of you and then salted and then had borax poured on it so that not even the ants would want it.. kind of interesting seven degrees Kevin Bacon given that arcane had previously pushed the draw symbol magic with their first title.. and yet we could have all of these things in one title and it wouldn't even be that hard to do.. as long as you didn't have a dual analog controller as your baseline sadly or an entire gaming population that is entirely from the in whole gaming experience a whole generation has completely grown up with the idea that the game is supposed to play itself and that's what makes it feel good.. the bungee effect.. even dark souls is a rhythm game, when you look at like the actual progressive direction in games like chivalry for melee..
But I do miss this late stage era where they were trying to actually have their cake and eat it too.. and there's there's a lot of successes that came out of this and whether you like this game or not as far as what it seems like they were trying to do that was successful, it just you know seem to not necessarily be what was fun or what people wanted.. which is I mean shit that's half the problem with a lot of really good games too LOL.. and if you look at resident evil 6 as a a too many things in one basket.. and if you looked at Max Payne 3 as okay we took that basket and we made a game around it.. it really bothers me that the the casualty of returning to a focused survival horror, with atmosphere.. happened to come at the expense of not playing a movie and pushed us back to 2001 controls.. it really does feel like gaslighting especially when we've had crisis or dark Messiah or fear.. I mean well look at crisis2 and fear 2... Once at the Apex or a shining example of player agency.... And their sequel tried to burn any bridge that connected them to that..... which in those cases it's a strange one because they were financially successful LOL I mean it's not that strange, it's just sad and pathetic.. but usually you could always make the claim oh it just wasn't you know financially viable like resident evil 6 was which I don't know if that's true or not I'm sure that game sold pretty well LOL but as far as the reaction goes it was fairly negative.. whereas crisis and fear are classics that are heralded as best-in-class examples LOL dark Messiah as well.. and.. I miss PC gaming that's all... And I miss that enclave of console games that actually we're still trying to be also in that development of game design as opposed to how to render a movie with the ultimate gaslight of pretending that the player is involved in making it happen..
You used to have both, now you have neither and it's not even in the indie scene anymore if anything that's.. I mean I've got hope and more hope for that than than the other but honestly as this becomes so normalized and like I said an entire generation grown up on it.. I don't think people even know where we were, in a lot of cases people don't even think it was a feature LOL.. it'd be amazed at how many people I see on stream that are just confused about default binds that they could change and probably should have looked at in the menu the first thing they did when they opened the game.. but it's like they're helpless if the control prompt doesn't come up and then they're upset if it's not the exact same thing that they've done before if they have to learn a new muscle memory or think a slightly different process and this is bad in every way for game design.

Additionally, the 2nd villain kinda comes out of no where, with almost no transition from the first. It was kinda a "Wait, what?" moment that felt out of place.

While I like a lot of the gameplay improvements of evil within 2, I found myself to be less interested in the story in 2 as I was in 1. I felt the villains in 2 weren't as imposing as 1. Not to mention I disliked kidman in both games and thought (IMO) she was kind of a terrible person that the game wanted me to like, and I just didn't.

Yeah the 2nd game rotated and swapped villains too often, whereas the 1st game had Ruvik and the Director as the main opposing forces until the epilogue. I really didn't care about all the religious bullshit that the demonic pastor had to say, but I LOVED Stefano's and Myra's arcs. Stefano's macabre plotline was so disturbing but alluring, and Myra's end-of-the-world solution was a good wrap up to the STEM system.
If they incorporated all 3 villains simultaneously, that would've made the story feel a lot more cohesive. They're even a perfect fit for each other plot-wise. Myra was chaotic good, Theodor was lawful evil, and Stefano was chaotic neutral.

The Evil Within at "Nightmare" is worth the hassle! A few sections are different than the standard difficulty and it's better for it! It forces you to play very carefully, disarming every trap to get crafting material for the crossbow bolts (reset every time you fail, save often). The crossbow is your best friend in many circumstances : fire for running hordes (you can wipe multiple, as long as they run through the fire), flash for invisible enemies (followed by a kneel & stab move, saving ammo) , poison for 2 or 3 "zombies", freeze for chainsaw maniacs followed by a harpoon to the head), shock & explosion for crowd control. The sequence where you try to flee from Laura in multiple rooms is maddeningly hard, but every win feels earned. I got so good playing it that in the later chapters, it felt "easy" even if it never was. After beating it, it became one of my favorite survival horror games and assuredly the best ratio difficulty/reward ever, and I've been playing 3rd person survival horror games since 1996. Flawed, but awesome! Nightmare is the best way to experience it. The game felt like it was made to play that way. Hardcore gamers only!

      Both games had bad AI
Gunplay was really bad in TEW1 and wasn't much better in the second game
Firematches were broken in TEW1, it was basically a get out of jail free card WHEN it worked
Then we can get to the fact that, TEW1 had awful pacing, game was HEAVILY unfair in a lot of places which make it more frustrating then scary, story was sloppy but creepy, characters were bland as a surfboard, on launch the game ran like shit, TEW2 improves so much of these and also gives you emphasis on exploration, every time I play it again I discover new little parts of the map that gives me items, the story while a little more generic was a lot more clean and you can tell RE8 Took a lot of vibes from it, and there was a lot more enemy variety. It then sacrificed Boss design, villains weren't as hardhitting, and a lot of the hardcore gorey environments were gone but both have their pros and cons. They're both fantastic

Both games were far from perfect, the first certainly had a stronger direction than the sequel, but then the sequel did some new things that were pretty neat, they're quite different. In any case, all of these great horror franchises that are just driven into a wall... Look at Dead Space... It's hard to make good RE4 clones.
To be fair, i never thought Shinji Mikami was this one man army genius, he gets closer to the realm of Yu Suzuki than his own friend Hideki Kamiya. I love the man for what he's created of course, but i also love shenmue 1 and 2... and cannot play shenmue 3 beyond moving Ryo for 2 minutes, while remembering how bad the game is because of its director, and quit.

@@Stigmaphobia777 im a big fan of what he's created in general aswell, i just dont think he's an endless source of raw genius like some like to paint him as.
And there's plenty of remarkable game directors that have fans like yourself, whatever they do, just by virtue of being dont by them, get enjoyment (somehow) out of their loyals... Again, to each their own, but he's far from this genius, he's sloppy as hell, and he created my favourite game franchise (along with the franchises that hironobu sakaguchi and hidetaka miyazaki have created)... So it's not an attack on him or the fans... I really like the Evil Within, and i do like 1 in general more than 2, which Mikami had more control over... But it's hardly an improvement over what he already did over 15 years ago (give or take) at the time of its release.

Really enjoyed the first game. I think The Evil Within 3 will never happen, because they forcibly concluded Seb’s story in The Evil Within 2(such a terrible sequel).
Now Seb doesn’t remember Ruvik and Joseph means nothing to him. His character totally depends on his daughter now because the devs now think video game male protagonist should be a sad dad(and nothing else). It’s sad to see Seb’s character and potential getting destroyed in such a way, but hey, I had a really good time playing The Evil Within 1 and waiting for the sequel. I’m still grateful for that.

@Enthusiastic Aizawa it was intended like that but the payoff to try puzzle wasn't worth it, it literally hitches on having a mystery and when figured out isn't satisfying or well written, it was made to be like a puzzle because they knew the story wasn't actually that good

Its has a lot of bugs if you have a to high framerate. I changed it in the settings to cap at 30 frames, this somehow gives you a lock 60 but it fixes the games physics bugs.

Just finished The Evil Within 2 and although by the end I didn't dislike it nearly as much as at the start, all I kept thinking throughout was, 'Damn, I just want to play through the first one again...' I remember loving it, the balance between the amounts of action felt a little off in terms of frequency, but it did everything that I think it set out to do as a game: creep me out, make surviving difficult but not impossible, force you to manage resources, and keep me engrossed in the story. An awesome game that did a beautiful job of succeeding the style of Resi 4 but breaking away from exactly the same gameplay and creating its own lore.
