@@kirstynloftus826 Agreed. She's incredibly underrated! 😊
@@tylerhackner9731 Glad to hear it!
Taylor is mid
That Rory album is 🔥
Mark, when I saw your review of Weathervanes and noticed the 10/10 score in the description, I was reminded of when Todd In The Shadows named Meet Me At Our Spot by Willow Smith & Tyler Cole as his favorite hit song of 2021, despite neither landing in the 2021 YE Hot 100 nor peaking inside the top 20.
If you love something so much that you're willing to break your OWN rules, that love is as genuine as it can be.
My favorite albums of 2023 are:

3. Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter - SAVED!

7. Mitski - The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
8. Danny Brown - Quaranta
9. Pony Bradshaw - North Georgia Rounder
10. Squid - O Monolith
A lot of RUclips critics didn’t love Mitski’s record but I think it was awesome.
I've been watching you for years now, you've shown me some of my favorite artists and exposed me to music I'd never have seen otherwise. I just wanted to say that the work you've put out this year is top notch, especially your forays into video essaying. I appreciate you, and look forward to seeing what you do next year!

Great list, Mark! I have actually been getting into Zach Bryan, Ruston Kelly and Spanish Love Songs to start off 2024... which is a refreshing surprise for a metalhead like me! Speaking of metal, though...it's awesome to see Victory Over The Sun on this list!
I found your selections more accessible than with other best of 2023 list selections. Rory and Nourished By Time blew me away and I'm not an R&B fan. Three of my 2023 best ofs are Bl4ck M4rket C4rt, Candelabro and Feeble Little Horse.

Here’s to 2024!
So happy you put Charles weasly Godwin on the list. Love that your enjoy him
To get personal for a second, 2023 wound up being just as turbulent of a year for me as 2022, arguably moreso. So the music that I got to hear this year was a balm for a lot of frustrating situations this year.
8. 100 gecs - 10,000 gecs
7. 2nd In Command - Live With Love Until You Can't Anymore
6. Many Tiny Boxes - S/T (the nightmare fuel record of the year for me)
5. Aesop Rock - Integrated Tech Solutions

3. Spanish Love Songs- No Joy
2. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit- Weathervanes (you have no idea how close this was to being my AOTY)
1. Underscores- Wallsocket
An honourable mention of music that stuck with me this year is the soundtrack to Studio Yurei's short film, Radar. I'm not sure if it's royalty free or not, but it's a very impactful score for an Analog horror film that really stuck with me, especially the track that plays at the end of the film.
I got introduced to Game Lee's 2023 album from watching Mark's channel, and it's one of my faves of the year, too! Also, wishing you a better 2024!
Here are some of favorites from this year :)
'The Weakness' - Ruston Kelly
'Seeking The Sources Of Streams' - Cicada
'Weathervanes' - Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit
'A Fate Worse Than Home' - Iravu
'Rolling Up The Welcome Mat' - Kelsea Ballerini

I bought Weathervanes as a gift for a coworker for Christmas and I wasn't sure if it was a good move. This was oddly reassuring, lol
I feel like this year was generally good as someone more into the Hardcore/Metal/Emo side of things. 2021 was maybe a little more consistent, but both 2022 and 2023 had some great albums. (Didn’t get to Svalbard unfortunately, but the three songs I heard from it were great so I imagine getting to it will warrant high praise).
My top 10’s as follows:
10. Leprethere - Tarnished Passion
9. Holding Absence - The Noble Art of Self Destruction

45:44 Now the mainstream is finally rewarding the album and her
Thnx heaps Mark.
that jason isbell album is way too good, also my number one but I think followed closely by zack bryan's self titled.
I REALLY wasn't expecting Svalbard
Islands - "And That's Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs" is my top album for 2023.
I feel so vindicated by the Home is Where inclusion
Enjoyed your reviews but its a bit heavy on American artists - What about the rest of the world and old artists - Mon Laferte, Everything But The girl, Paul Weller, The Zombies, Steven Wilson to name a few
If you’re hurting for Svalbard to appear on more end of the year list…. Well we might have you covered this week…
Shout out to Rors
Would you mind in the future saying the artist and album up front on these albums, I know it's a video but I like to listen on walks and don't always catch what the album was. Great list though. 😊
I’m pulling for Ruston Kelly to get a high placement
he did!
The Veils had the album of the year for me. Check it out. It's amazing.
The best album here that you introduced me to is the one from Mesarthim
It's so weird to separate mainstream hip hop and underground hip hop. Why would it matter if an album is popular or not all what matter is how it make you feel. It's really not hard to dig for underground rap there is a ton of resources with top X lists. I saw a list of top 300 rap album. On hiphopheads subreddit there was over 30+ releases in the first week of the year yet people complains about the lack of mainstream releases and refuse to try some albums on the list
No love for Lana Del Ray but enjoyed the list
i was delighted when i saw that strawberry woman was the highest song from weathervanes on the best songs list, since it’s also my favorite song and it reminds me of my partner, but i think i need to revisit it as a whole because besides strawberry woman and death wish, i haven’t gone back to it, and i really should.
Before making my own list, I wanna thank @smoov22 for recommending that KSHMR 2023 record, which I thought it was gonna be hard to go through when I saw the tracklist, but it truly went so easy with so many goddamn bangers and one genuinely well made melancholic song that for some reason reminded me of BTS 😅
My personal list is pretty different from yours, but here goes...
30. JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown - Scaring the Hoes
29. Avatar - Dance Devil Dance
28. Polaris - Fatalism
27. Movements - Ruckus!
26. White Reaper - Asking For A Ride

23. Zulu - A New Tomorrow
22. Mutoid Man - Mutants

i loved bury the lede when i first listened to it, and dessa officially been added to my list of women who i call mother. other women on that list are kesha and alex kingston if you were wondering. anyway chopper, twelve to one, and hurricane party are all excellent, and it’s a crime that none of them became hits.
great list but i’m extremely mad at you for calling Victory Over the Sun “Liturgy done right”
That new Molybaron album Something Ominous gets closer to 5 stars each time I listen to it. It’s like the best parts of Pain of Salvation, System of a Down, and Rise Against all rolled into one. None of the immature or dreary parts.
predictions for the top 10:
10. Shook
9. The Weight of the Mask
8. SCARING THE HOES
7. Erotic Probiotic 2
6. Gag Order
5. No Joy
4. The Weakness
3. That! Feels Good!

I could see Mark going with either Angel Numbers by Hamish Hawk or Gag Order by Kesha at #2.
You predicted this so accurately: seriously impressive.
Lowkey impressed with how accurately you guessed the list
What the hell is Hypnagogic Pop?
It is commonly defined as pop or psychedelic music that draws influence from the 80s, through often hazy and low-fidelity production.
(Taken from Wikipedia)
wednesday rat saw god.
I feel like despite us living in the era of TikTok/viral songs, I see people listening to and delving into actual albums now more than I’ve seen in a while. Especially when the charts are a mess.
Mainstream albums were worse than ever, bloated gloopy pap, 20-30 songs usually and barely 3 worth listening to on each album. Everything that didn’t chart I had at least 3.5 stars and up.
"Liturgy done right" lol
you talk about music you don't like as if its objective please fucking knock that shit off
Guts, scaring the hoes, desire, I want to turn into you, jaguar ii, bewitched, the record are my favorites
Uh so i listened to weathervanes,,, and while i love your enthusiasm for it, i found it to be unbearable. cheers tho, decent list
Honestly we need to get rid of Taylor Swift and instead replace her with Caroline Polachek
Fantastic list of some of the most derivative and uninspiring recordings of the last few years (not all 2023 releases on this poorly researched list).
Alright, fun guy: show me your top 50, and tell me which aren't from 2023 - I'm curious ;)
(actually, wait, are you talking about the Pony Bradshaw album? Because in that case, while it is a compilation of EPs, not all the songs were released in 2022 on the project, which formally dropped in 2023 and is why I counted it, specifically checking before I even reviewed it - Tapir! did the same thing this year with its staggered EPs over 2022-23)
no uzi? pink tape

probably forgot, it's obviously top ten
Lol...what?
I DON’T THINK YOU TRUUUUUUST
It’s to trash to be here
