I have to be very careful with projects I am not happy with. That dissatisfaction with a project will become a huge sap on my creativity and enthusiasm. My solution has been to maintain my crafting areas as a place of positive energy where I can reduce my stress. It is not a place I want to be confronted with mistakes or regrets. So I box failures up and move them to material storage with a 'Revisit' label. When I am at the top of my game in a great mood, that is the time I rework my mistakes. Some things get fixed, some things get salvaged, and some things eventually get tossed. But I don't let them drag me down.

Every once in a while I go through my shelves where i store all of my crafted Terrain, and I look at my old projects, and evaluate if I still like them. Sometimes i update them to my 'current standards' based on my new skill level, and other times If they are unsalvageable I throw them out, or make a totally new version of them. I live in a small apartment in the city, so nothing is sacred. They served their purpose, but now their time is done, and i get to use the shelf space that they occupied to house a new project that excites me.

My biggest regret is a mini I painted inspired by a vtuber I love. I put a lot of work into it kitbashing parts, sculpting new parts, and once primed it was so cool, I was so excited to start painting it and seeing the finished result that I ended up rushing it resulting in a piece not at all reprentative of my skills. Now I don't hate it there are aspects of it I really love but I had such high ambitions for this model that I couldn't help but feel defeated over the result, I still have it sat on myself partly because I do still like it but also as a reminder to sometimes slow down and not rush head on into a project regardless of how excited I am because if I do I'll regret it in the end

How do you approach a project? How do you decide what techniques to employ? So this outdoor work has the same set of problems on a far larger scale. Feel free to bring us along!

Whatever works for you to make you happy and feel good is the most important thing. Mental (and physical) health is everything. And I think everyone around here understands that. Enjoy your vacation and take your well deserved time off! Keep up your amazing work. I've been following you for a few months now, (painting minis became kind of a meditating hobby for me during lockdown) dug through a lot of your videos and I really, really enjoy what you do and am excited to see what you do every week!
for my part, I often struggle with not being satisfied once I sit down on a piece of art/ design/ whatever pretty fast. I often create ideas in my head and sometimes fail to execute them as I invisioned and it really, REALLY bugs me! For most of the time I just stop and put that project either "on hold" or never touch it again, which is also a thing I try to work on, not to start a new project before finishing all the others I've started but still give it my very best until I'm satisfied and not just to finish it so I can start another. I think it's a habit of every creative person to never really be satisfied or always finding something that bugs you, even if it's just a tiny bit of 'mistake'. I think our "persuit to perfection" is a blessing and a curse at the same time. We are our biggest critics and I think that is a good learning experience. Even tho I have the same mental attitude as you do that I'm often hesistant about "correcting" stuff and "what if I screw up?" but sometimes it takes a little courage and just do it and it may even come out better than before because you've changed your mind during the process and even got more inspiration out of it. Who knows? Maybe it's a personal feeling.
P.S.: I loved the Jets skit. Even tho as a german I should be on the Oilers/ Dreisaitl/ Kahun bandwagon :D

Even if it sucks or isn't what I picture, finishing a project feels better than having it half-done in my piles of shame. I really admire how you push through frustration to finish things! (Also if you're looking for ideas for masking, I've had success pinning fabric over large diorama pieces to keep mess off of certain areas. If I'm careful, the pinholes don't show and the fabric covers only what I need without getting in the way). I try to view my disappointing or failed projects as points on a timeline, things that I can look back on a few months or years down the road and think, "That was my experience and skill level back in 20XX, and this is how my knowledge and technique have changed since then." The two disappointments that you had with resin effects, I seem to recall that you were experimenting or trying something new with each of them. Those were learning experiences that gave you more practice and a stronger knowledge base moving forward, and as much as it sucks to look at them on the shelf and think about what they could've been, hopefully they also better prepared you to create an effect like the one you wanted in the future. That's how I try to see my failures, anyway -- I'm better at this than I was in the past, and I'm not as good as I will be in the future, and looking at past disappointments can help show me how far I've come since then, or how far I'll get in a couple of years.

I hear you man. It's really important to take breaks from the craft and reset sometimes. I feel like the projects that go south are learning experiences. The reason it wasn't the best piece you ever created was because it was meant to teach you something so when the next best piece comes along you have it covered. Ive made a few mistakes on some pretty cool projects but made the best from them, I forgot to seal foam balls in a purple people eater project and they melted with the clear coat. That's probably the biggest regret so far. My worst mistake has yet to be made and I think that should hold true for everyone. I have a couple that come to mind. I recently got into making submerged resin shipwreck dioramas. I made one and decided to use brown resin, but the resin I had was far too strong and opaque. I caught it somewhat early, poured out the first pour, and mixed a second batch with less than half the pigment... and it was still almost opaque.
In the end, ironically, it's probably the most realistic representation of a deep ocean wreck, that you need to hold lights up to it to see. But, without looking up close with a flashlight, it looks like a big, brown block, with acrylic walls

  • @brettabraham
    @brettabraham 3 года назад

For this past Christmas, I built a diorama for my dad. Its the most ambitious project I've ever taken on.
The idea was him and his dog out in the wilderness living off the land. He's perched on a cliff, overlooking the nearby area with his dog next to him, and trees and his log cabin behind him.
I really struggled with the log cabin for a while. Originally I wanted the wood to be actually rounded like logs, but couldn't get the sizing right to make it look good.
I got caught up in thinking how it would actually be built. In reality, log cabins are drab and boring - they're almost entirely made out of a single material. I added some stones at the bottom as a foundation, but ultimately, the cabin ended up looking WAY too monotone.
I only see it every few months when I go to visit him (he's a few hours away), but when I do I'm always disappointed by the colors I chose. At least he loves it!

Totally agree on that everything I have created has at least one mistake in it, but 99,9% of those mistakes anyone else will probably never notice, so it helps to tell myself that most of the small errors that bug me my players will never notice, they're just happy there's minis and terrain!
My worst mistake though which still bugs me to this day is my first batch of 20 goblin miniatures from Reaper. I spent so many days painting them up meticulously, only to ruin them at the last step with a spray-on protective coat which made the plastic melt / turn super sticky (this, I later learned, is a mistake every mini-painter makes exactly once). I still beat myself up for not testing it on one model first, that way I could've saved the other 19. They now are hidden in a box of shame, and while I will never use them, I can't get myself to throw them away, because they were the first models I ever bought and which got me super ecited for DnD. Oh well, live and learn!

Suggestion (sorta): first, thank you for being such an amazing host! Second, I've seen watercolorists use "liquid frisket" aka masking fluid to block off parts of paper they want to keep white, and they can remove it when they want. Caveats: some are pull-off and some are rub-off. I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know how well it'll work.

Facing failure is an important part of this, or really any hobby. The important thing is to be able to accept it and try again. This is especially true of miniature painting. Those Crystal Brush winning models may look amazing once they're finished, but I guarantee you that there are mistakes hidden under there somewhere. We all screw up. Embrace it. Learn from your mistakes. Try again until you're happy with it. That's the hobby in a nutshell.

Good looking garden. I hope you get a good harvest. I craft all winter with a bit of gardening, the garden all spring/summer with a bit of crafting. Fall is harvest and preserving.

With the zombie diorama, if you use a vacuum cleaner and hold the nozzle near the sanding face, it will take all the dust etc and you won’t have to worry about cleaning the diorama.
Really good to see you taking care of your headspace 👍

Bulging zombie base: a good sharp hand plane would probably work wonders. Milliput shaves really nicely, doing it with hand tools keeps the shavings out of the nicely finished model and risk is low, then once it's close you can hand-sand it down carefully and repaint black.
My biggest frustration is a model kit years ago I spent ages pre-shading, then painted a multi-coloured camo pattern with too much layering. The first colour looked awesome, the second a bit meh, and the third totally flat. I 'fixed' it by re-applying the shading after the fact but the real solution was to put it in a box and not look at it...
Going outside is more important than you realise, eh? I've taken to wandering around the garden during the work day whenever I'm waiting for the kettle to boil and it improves my mood no end. Good luck on keeping up the good stuff after your break ends - it's important!

    My biggest hobby mistake: After I ran a game of D&D for some friends, I left my terrain crate in the car. In the summer. In Florida. Some of my favorite trees and some of my favorite building - warped. Could I fix it? Maybe. It would require surgical precision and a heat gun, but I've been too defeated to do it. One day maybe ;_;

Failure is needed on the road to progress; it's how we get better.
One of my regrets involves a handful of my dungeon tiles; I had measuring difficulties on making 6x6 squares and ended up gluing four 3x3 squares together.

A day or week of rest / distraction, especially a hobby like ours, is just as important as a good creative streak. You can distance yourself from some projects, get new inspiration etc. Regards and I hope you will have a great time relaxing with your family in your garden.

So... I've bought a kit 3 times because I didn't like my finished product. It was a cheap $10 revell spite fire. Then I found the same scale hasagawa kit (much more expensive) and used my previous failures and wins as inspiration and made an awsome diorama out of it. Point is I learned from your mistakes from the past kits. And was able to grow my skill and love of the hobby.
Also... I'd love to see a gardening with Black Magic Crafts episode!!! Your vids are amazing! And you should take time for yourself when you need it. Wish my job had that option... lol

I regret one of my earlier paintjobs on a balor mini. It's totally redoable, but I have so mini things to paint hat I just keep leaving it on the back burner
Also it's great to hear that you're taking some time for your mental health and I think shining a light on and reflecting on your mistakes & regrets doesn't make this video lazy.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I said it on that video and i'll put it here again so you have another shot at fixing it, you're probably allergic to kicker, i have the same thing... I just drip it on with a small stick and that makes it "not a big deal/not a problem". Granted its slower when you're jamming out a whole ass city

I loved the zombie piece. So sad to see how it has become. I hope you can fix it. But more importantly I hope you can figure out why its done what its done. One thing I love about your channel is how you try to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it and share that with us. Off hobby topic. Your back yard looks good. Keep getting that vitamin D therapy and stay safe.

Good for you - even a "stay-cation" can recharge your energy when you do something that makes you feel good about the environment around you. "Terrain building" in the real world is "just" landscaping but working with real dirt, stones, wood, and growing things will inspire you for both macro and mini ventures. Have a blast - catch you on the flip side!

Love your projects and really like this video. This video explains exactly how I feel with my Hobby. I build very large and custom piñatas for birthday parties. Most of the time if I feel this way on a project, I am glad to see them get destroyed. But once I made a full size Arthas Menethil pinata (death knight from World of Warcraft) for an art contest. This is by far the one item I felt the most frustrated with the final result since I was rushed on the final week. Out of all the things I have made, this is the only one I have kept. To remind myself that I can always do better and to better manage my time. Best lesson though is that even if it is not exactly what I wanted, other people still think it is amazing.

the last one, a low light LED.. drill from bottom into the resin enough to place the light ever so slightly into the area not much (can easily with the room you have cut away a small box on the bottom for housing) run the feed out the back for plugin OR opt into battery. You're very creative and I think these three maybe GREAT "Reworks" you can show as content to create EVEN better from already good creations.

Not finishing a project. I have so many projects from the past that are 90% done, good enough to play on, and then get left for the next project. I just don't have the time to get them over the line.
Doing my channel has actually forced me to get a project done from start to finish. So again, you have inspired me to get terrain finished! Thank you.

This just proofs that, again, we are our own worst critics when it comes to our own art.
I do understand though, and being critic to our own work, that makes us push harder, to get better, out of the box problem solving, and LEARNING :) as long as we don´t let our own critics end up in us stop creating, it can be a good thing, but on the other hand, we are usually kinda too hard on ourselves...
Anyways, I´m glad you´re taking some time and spending it with your family :) highly deserved!!! and I don´t see this as an "lazy" video, looking back at your own stuff and sharing what you think is flawed, it´s actually helpful, and especially that it´s ok to look at your own work and accept it, not letting it stop you from keep creating :) we all have those pieces we wish we have done a little different :)
    Good on yah! 💜

Building a hexagonal shelf for storing bottles filled with dry foods (pasta, oats, nuts, rice etc.) I really planned all out and made prototypes for everything and I liked it. Just at the end I let my self-esteem judge it and it said that it was bad. I redid it, but ended at the same point. It still works as a prototype for then I couldn't afford the materials for the finished product.
It is bothering me every morning, but I hope that some day I'll have the time and money to finish it.
