I just watched the movie before watching your video. It's past 4 in the morning but I'm glad I watched it, that's a really good movie. The character Charlie ended up being far more social than I was at school. If he's a wallflower, than I was a wildflower way out in the grassland. I'm sure that'll sound a lot less witty to me once I've had some sleep.
Despite me having done basically nothing in my life so far, some of those awkward experiences were way too relatable. Also relatable though, was that feeling of happiness when you're enjoying a moment with some friends you care deeply about. Now that I think about it I've had that feeling in some odd situations, like when I was at technical school in the workshop, good music was playing on the radio and the sun was streaming through the windows. Or when two of my colleagues and I were laughing till we were crying for about 2 minutes at something that wasn't really that funny, or late at night after a party I was with another guy who was helping me get a drunk friend home, and he was being so nice. Usually when I have that feeling of happiness next will come the realisation that this moment is fleeting, soon it'll all be gone. That gloomy realisation used to irritate me, dampening my enjoyment of the moment. But now I find it gives a bittersweet joy to those times, making them feel truly precious.
You pointed out some aspects that didn't occur to me, like his father showing care only after his suicide attempt. That puts their relationship in a different light. It's interesting to compare people's interpretations of stories. I feel like I often miss a lot, especially the first time I watch or read something. I'm gonna have to re-watch this movie.
Your comment about growing out your hair struck a chord, I tried to let my hair grow out a bit several times but my whole family complained and/or mocked me. It took me a few years to ignore their complaints and stick with it, and a while more before I didn't feel self-conscious or embarrassed about having long hair when I was out of the house. It seems trivial now, but I'm disappointed they made such a fuss over it and glad that I didn't listen to them. And now, they no longer complain.
