Hi MollyMetal, welcome back to BabyMetal's journey, finally you're here with one of the hits of 2023.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this at the recently finished World Tour and getting the crowd going bonkers with this.
The live debut was at Apocrypha - Another One exclusive show prior to the track release, it was fun and totally unexpected, everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
There's a live proshot version at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka released in the official summer sonic. You'll notice some slight difference between the live and the studio album.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when MomoMetal is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festivals when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya in Megitsune and Karate. The traditional Japanese instrument you can hear in the beginning is a shamizen, also used in Megitsune.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts.
    Next suggestion:
    - MAYA live at PIA Arena MM official MV.
I wish you merry belated Xmas and happy new year.🦊🤘🍾❤️

"Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Welcome back, great reaction. The live performances of this have been completely wild and the crowds on the recent tours were going nuts!🤘🤪🤘
This is what Tom Morello had to say about this collaboration:
"I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I've been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of 'Metali!!' I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!"
Well spotted on the similarities between this and the 'Megitsune' official video - both were directed by the same person, 'Megitsune' was shot at a Shrine in Tokyo. These are two of their most Japanese based songs (if you want to see them doing Indian/Bollywood style and where they do use a sitar you need to see 'Shanti Shanti Shanti', this one is all Japanese and the 3 stringed instrument is a shamizen).
The song title translates as 'Metali' (or 'Metari') which is a fusion of the words metal and matsuri (Japanese summer festival). The song is about a Metal Village holding a metal festival, so they have included all the matsuri shouts everybody would be calling out as encouragement to the people carrying heavy floats etc like "Sore, Sore", "Dokoisho" and "Wasshoi!".
They are inviting us all to dance - I am reliably informed there is something in the lyrics (Su sings it and it is also in Momometal's kabuki section) about we are all idiots or fools - the idiots who watch and the idiots who dance ... so as we're all here and we're all idiots why just watch, we may as well all dance.

The particular plucked string instrument they are using, and that you can briefly see held by the seated kitsune-masked figure at the very start, is a shamisen from Japan. But the Indian sitar is also a plucked string instrument and they can sound similar, so it's an understandable guess. As you noticed, the set for the first section of this music video is very similar to the set for the Megitsune music video, and certainly an intentional reference to that song which also deals with folk traditions of Japan and masked characters. But in this one Babymetal is kicking over tables and their rowdy audience is making holes in the screens!
I for one appreciate your rambling, keep it up! 😃

This song was released 10 years after Megitsune, even the MV director is the same, so this is the new Megitsune song (both were performances at every show on tour this year).

Nice one! This is a 100% Japanese song about traditions and festivals, called Matsuri (pronounced Matsuli). Mash it with metal, you get “Metali”. Babymetal calls on all the boys and girls to dance and sing, cuz it’s festival season, and you ain’t going home!
Similar to Megitsune MV, Babymetal likes to poke at restrictive traditions. In the same way the girls pull away Su’s Kimono in Megitsune’s intro, they kick away the “high brow traditions” of upper class tea houses so everyone can join and have fun.
Additionally, the Kabuki theater breakdown (spoken words) is akin to western Opera, but only males are allowed to perform, so they had newest member Momoko do that instead. AND…in the live, ends it with a sick growl of “ARE YOU READY?!” (probably tracked), but still awesome!

Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。The title is a synthesized word from two words : "Metal" and "Matsuri 祭 (festival)" → Metali. And if you want to know the deep meaning of the lyrics please check Professor Hartley's channel (Andrew Hartley).
I am sure you would prefer live rendition to this MV because at the actual venues, this song followed after a cool instrumental solos by Western (American) Kami Band. This song was one in the setlist performed all of the shows in the North American tour (29 gigs) with Dethklok and EU/UK tour (20 gigs). I appreciate the devoted performance by Chris, CJ, Anthony and Clint (and Ryan in NA tour).
Momometal's extravagant elocution and moves in Kabuki style (and her growl in live show) gave an amazing accent in the exciting repetitiveness. The repetitive わっしょい "Wasshoi" is a call or yell used in Japanese Matsuri (festival) to intensify people's excitement and especially to encourage the power of guys who are carrying a heavy Mikoshi (神輿) on their shoulder that is a kind of a float in Western style festivals. Characters with masks appeared in this MV are all Japanese.
