I think if you do any traveling then the icom 5100 is the best. I wouldn't consider any other radio on your list because the near repeater search feature the ic5100 has is so useful for me. Saves me ridiculous amounts of time not having to reprogram my radio before trips and just hitting the repeater search along my trip. I went to Colorado, programmed my old dumb radio and then realized there is 20 repeaters with the same name. So then I had to pull over, use repeater book and go through my channels looking for the frequency of the closest repeater, what a nightmare. With the 5100, search near repeaters, done, while driving, 3 touches on the touchscreen, that's how a mobile should work. If you don't travel, then any of the other dumb radios on your list work fine.
Currently running a Yaesu FT 891 for HF and a FTM 300 for VHF/UHF/Fusion back to a home base station FTM 100 PDN network. I put both control heads in a cupholder mount side by side. This pretty much gives me full spectrum coverage while mobile with a nice compact and clean installation.
The first radio I bought after passing the Tech+ was an Alinco mobile with a whopping 14 channel memory! Turns out that was more than I needed here in San Diego! I love a simple FM only radio without all of those digital modes. All of the repeaters were very active in the '90s, not so much anymore.
I WANT THE IC 5100 :) Good Video. I enjoy all your videos. Always down to earth. I have to edit this. I am disabled and most of the time I have to sit in a lazy boy-style chair which is also my bed. The IC 7100 with a detachable face allows me to sit in my chair with a lap table and communicate using this setup. I have room for the IC5100 also which would keep me from changing back and forth from HF to Vhf/Uhf FM. I go with the IC7100 for all modes on the VHF/UHF when needed. The detachable heads are NOT just for mobile use. :)
Great video! IC-2730 owner here and thought I’d mention that the radio can accept a Bluetooth module, although this is a feature I personally do not use.
Jason, Excellent video as usual. Just to give another perspective on the mic plug plugging directly into the radio - I prefer this option as I like to mount the head higher in the dash but want the mic mounted lower without the mic cable dangling down the dash. Makes for a much cleaner looking install if you choose to mount that way. Too bad manufacturers don’t give a mic plug in both places. Thanks for all that you do! 73.
That makes sense. I guess it depends on your mounting needs. I just think if they sell the radio with a remote kit, and the only mic option is on the body of the radio, then it should come with the mic extension cable also.

I have a few of these. I purchased some Yaesu rigs to replace my 5100`s that are a little old (Still work) and There was a Fushion repeater now in our area. I find the Yaesu rigs hard to use. Just to adjust the output power I have to get the manual out for. The ICOM is just easy to use. I now have the FTM 300D on the low antenna and I put the good old ID-5100 back on the tall antenna. Now the Yaesu is just repeater only, we do a lot of simplex around here. I loved the color screes on the Yaesu`s and its why I purchased them. To each their own I guess.
I had been using the BTECH 25X2 for about 4 years as my mobile. For Christmas I upgraded to the IC-2730A and it is amazing how much better it is for how close they are in price. The build quality is much better. The receiver is noticeably more sensitive. It’s more intuitive to program/navigate. The scan is much faster and it is a true dual receive radio rather than dual watch. In my opinion, it’s not worth the little savings to go with the BTECH.
If you're just wanting a 2M radio for comms in the desert or rural areas without cell coverage, the Yaesu F-2980 can't be beat! I picked one up on Gigaparts for ~$150, but it'll crank out 80 watts and is built like a tank. Granted, you can get a Chinese dual band for that price, but 80 watts and a good antenna will get out much further than the 25 or 50 watts they're limited to.
I got mine at Giga for $120 to the door 2 years ago. Put it on dummy load. Pits out 90. Normally I run 15, but being to pump it up is great. Also does good job with railroad freqs 160-161. Guess marine too. Last two receive only.
Ordered the Anytone 587UV after watching a bunch of your videos and realizing that maybe, just maybe, I can get into DMR without a programming degree. According to repeaterbook, I have a DMR repeater literally down the street from me, so I figured I'd jump on in. Passed my Tech + General in the same sitting and waiting for my callsign, but when I do, I have a shiny new Icom 7300, a handful of Baofengs, a Wouxun UV9D, Yaesu FT3D and then the Anytone when it arrives to play radio with. Yeah, I have a problem... lol
What I like about the Icom 2730 is it's big bright display. The downside is all the extra parts that you have to buy if you want to mount it to the body, and those parts aren't cheap.
So I went the GMRS route prior to getting my ham. I have the 50v2, a kg1000g+, and a QYT 8900d all in the GMRS flavor. Now that I have my ham I have to start all over again. So I got an Anytone 778 for use till I get a more powerful one. Like one that matches my kg1000g+. I do have a ton of spare GMRS radios now so there’s that.
I watched this video and will be getting a radio shortly (test is in a week). This is a vehicle based system. I really like the IC-2730A, but would love to hear if there is anything I should be considering? Another radio in that price/features arena? For my use case, privacy tones (CTCSS) are important. I appreciate you getting back with me.
Great video, Thanks! A couple of suggestions. When driving I find simple is key. I do not want to be fiddling with a radio while operating in traffic. For that reason the Icom IC-2300H has been THE radio in my vehicle for three years now. VHF only, 65 watts output and bulletproof. This simple mobile radio should be in the hall of fame. As to dual band mobile radios, I love them. The Alinco 735t is my favorite so we agree on that. A huge feature you did not mention is the 735T is full duplexing so I can use it for satellite work. Perhaps you can mention whether a dual band is full duplexing when you do the best of 2023. Thanks ! W0ZEN
I have the 2730 and love the repeater mode it offers. I use it all the time to extend my handhelds range. As to the radio that you can use your phone with I would say be cautious. In some states being on your phone is illegal whereas being on your handmike is not.
JASON, can you make an updated version for March 2022. I saw a lot of cool stuff at hamcation that would probably be added to this or replace some of these radios.

This question was asked in another comment, but I will re-state my answer here. That radio has been out of stock for a long time, and was rumored to be discontinued. After checking with R&L and after this video was released, I learned that no... the radio isn't discontinued, but it is in very limited supply and R&L hasn't had them in stock since this video was released. So while yes, I would love to add it to this list, since they are so hard to get, it doesn't seem worth mentioning. Once they finally do come back in stock, I will be making a new video for that mode.
**Correction The B-Tech 50X3 has several screen colors to choose from. I have had it in my truck for about a year. LOVE IT! My previous radio was the ICOM 2730A, I changed to the 50x3 when I discovered that the separate radio face had internal speakers as well. With the 2730 I have use external speaker as the body was mounted underneath the drivers seat. Without external speakers it was difficult to hear radio traffic while driving.
Excellent video, as always well thought out! I'm a big fan of mobile radios because they are so versatile. I have the FTM 400XD (just got it last year) ... BTW digital is on top (band A). Great radio if you have the money. I've been eyeing the Anytone 587UVII, especially after getting the 878UVII which I'm very happy with.
Thanks this is a lot of good information. I have a newer 4 door truck and thought I would mount the radio in the back behind the seats and the head up front. Of course that's what these radios are made for. I thing that's bothering me is the heads don't have a speaker in them so under normal conditions the volume would have to be cracked up to hear what was going on. I did notice that the BOAFENG BTECH does have speaker's in the head but most the others don't. Maybe it's not a problem but just something I was thinking about.
Great review. Having the FTM-400XD, a great feature is enabling it as a cross-band repeater, which is real sweet. Not sure if the other dual receiver one can do same Again another great and informative video.
I have the VGC and it's installed in my garage and hooked up to a dedicated GMRS J pole. I can literally be upstairs in my bedroom with my tablet and TX/RX with it via bluetooth. It's awesome. I've had the BTECH, both the GMRS version and HAM version. Both were a POS. Avoid it!! I have the FTM6000 in my QTH and it's an amazing radio. Basic, but audio quality is amazing. My two other radios are FTM 300 and FTM 400. Both amazing radios and easily moded for GMRS.
I’m glad that I stuck with the ICOM Id-5100. The 2730 is cool but I like the idea of having DStar like my 4100. Though I would get the 7300 for HF and get a Yaesu FTM 991 just to have YSF and wires-X.

i've got the VGC in my car and it's a cool radio! two quick things however, it's 16 channels per page... and you can have as many pages of memory as your device (phone or tablet) will allow. and the other thing, it will do APRS. oh.. and, it's open banded... this radio WILL transmit on FRS/GMRS as well as MURS channels. at 50 watts.
I highly value your opinion, with that said Im looking for a mobile unit for my jeep 50w what should I get that will not break the bank. I noticed this video is 1 year old so maybe there is a newer unit worth looking at.
I am a new HAM and based in Hong Kong, I wnted to install a ALL-band car radio, looking at BaoFeng BTech UV-50X3, Wouxun KG-UV980P Quad Band, and Yaesu FTM6000R as options.

This 2730A is a great radio. One of the main reasons I like it is that the microphone plugs into the head of the unit. This allows me to put the radio in the trunk or under the seat or in the back seat. Nothing else does that.
@@DominicMazoch you can hook up into both?? thats way cool. the 2730A is my top choice. I've had the high end icom 5100 and the high end Yaesu Ft400 and I really like the 2730A for that reason alone.
All the information that you gave out, and one thing was glaring in omission Which radios does cross-band repeater function? I know that many people do not care about it, but it is nice when you are away from your vehicle, but have you HT with you and you can use the cross-band repeat function to monitor or contact friends while on your HT even if your HT cannot hit the local repeater.. It also works nice as a call in radio or emergency repeater during times of emergency. One thing you hit on for a couple of radios is how long each radio has been on the market. The older radios might not get firmware updates when a newer radio will more likely get updates on firmware. Nice video though. It was timely in the fact that I am looking to update my mobile rig (currently FT-8900, not mounted in the truck yet) and looking to maybe buy something newer since the 8900 is about 20 years old.
Just wanted to point this out in case anyone is considering the IC-2730a. It actually CAN do Bluetooth with the addition of the UT-133 Bluetooth module.
I have the 2300H and a ID-5100A, I really like them both. I have been thinking about trying the 7100. Is it good or bad thing to be fully invested in one brand? Or should I start trying others? I like ICOM but sometimes I wish they had color displays... Thanks

New ham. My hand-me-down ic-2100 died, and won't transmit. ( may need to replace q19) At this time the yaesu is less than the icon 3700. But you talked me into the full duel control. I have done aprs be on beacon with my phone and UV82... you said digital can be added to the yaesu. But it looks like it might be 'as involved as replacing q19' on the 2100. I have a QRZ 1 on a mobile j-pole. I feel I was able to make a sota contact further with the ic-2100..... Oh and I just bought a bioenno 1212A to power the ic2100... So I can't let it go to waste
I'm a new and I was wondering what would be the best site to go to for practice for my technician license and general because I want to try and get both at the same time and I keep taking the pre test and scoring 51-55 percent everytime and that's not good enough so any thoughts would be awesome and I like your show and keep up the good work
I stayed away from icom due to the white screens. If they had orange displays I'd have a shack full of them instead of Yeasu. I went with the Yaesu 400's over the 300's because of the touch screen. Lots of great radio's in the video!
I got my 400 in 2015 it an original the only issue was the separation cable. Being able to mount the head on the dash and keep the mic down in the center console is good.
Great info Jason! I'm totally with you with the mic plug. I still run a Yaesu FT-8900 with the body under the passenger seat. I can't imagine an application where I would ever want to plug the mic in the body. This feature is a deal breaker for me when I look to up grade. Thanks again...
We had two 8900s. Since 2007 or 2008. If I had know they were being discontinued I would have gotten mine out of my jeep when it burnt to the ground a few years ago. Need a new radio since then and nothing has really caught my eye. I wish Yeasu would make a digital capable 8900 replacement.
I had the 8900 in my truck for a year and was disappointed. The knobs were small, fiddly and hard to adjust in a 4wd truck. Also the display was to small to safely view while driving. Switched to the ftm400, way overkill but I like the big display.
Hi and thank you for your videos. I’m coming to this late. I just got my license and I live in the Pocono mountains and want to get my first mobile rig. I was given a Baofeng Bf-8HP as a gift and I can’t reach anyone on it. I’ve narrowed my choices down to the Icom IC2730A and the Alinco DR735T. Is there a “Better” radio of the two? Or which in your opinion is the better value? I am looking for a radio with a cross repeater. I don’t like the Icom 5100 because the mic doesn’t connect to the face.
Hi Jason, I like your videos. I bought several anytone mobile and a HT. Love the radios, like dmr. Im looking for a base radio that does at least 100W that will also have dmr functionality. I would like the base to be hf, vhf, uhf. I know Im asking alot, but want redundancy. Is there such a device out there? I mentioned the PLUS radio in this video. At that time, the PRO version was sold out everywhere and the rumor was that the PLUS had replaced the PRO. Then...for some reason....Anytone started making the PRO again. I am not sure if this was by popular demand or if they had always intended to do this and just didn't tell anyone, but....today we have both versions, if you can find the PRO in stock anywhere. I personally own the PRO version, not the PLUS model, so yes - both are great radios, but at the time of this recording, I was under the impression that the PRO had been discontinued.
Hi Jason, thanks for another informative video. I was wondering if the TYT TH9800 is worth your recommendations since this radio too is a full featured quad band and has the option of crossband. No PS port for digi. But for voice, good. Good sound. Easy to see control head. Has mike ports on base and control head. Nifty has a desk stand for control head.
I have used mostly Icom rigs in my vehicles the one exception was my old Yaesu FT8900r quad band rig 29,50,144 MHz 50 watts high power UHF was 40 watts. Put it together when I got rid of my pickup went to a Nissan Rogue wanted to put the 8900 in my car couldn’t find the base. Haven’t had a mobile rig in my car since. Decided I needed to get one went with the TYT TH7900 dual band band. It’s only been 3 weeks thus far with the separation kit, bracket separation bracket think I was in it for $220 from Amazon. Nice little rig came with programming software as well, does what I need it to do. Also wanted a replacement for my FT 8900r which is out of production why I don’t know it was a great rig. Any who, picked up another TYT product the TH9800, quad band 29,50,144 is 50 watts max UHF is 40 same as the TH7900. Again, came with everything software, mobile bracket, separation kit, faceplate bracket think I’m into it for $220 as well, still only 3 weeks into it, we do have a 6 meter repeater in my area, a net on Monday evenings. I get good audio reports from both, receive audio with external speakers is good as well. Test of time will tell, for the price it will work, I can always pull one of them to put in my motor home when we go somewhere. Great video, will have to view more of your videos. DE Mark AI4HO
Jason I just tested out for my Tech lic. and would like your opinion on a really good mobile radio that is perfect for offroad/overland and one that I may use for a base radio for search and rescue that I can use in a backpack. I am looking at the QYT KT8900 duel band as my backpack and the Yaesu FTM 300DR for the truck. I know the QYT is cheap but would it work?
Pretty fair review. I find the lower end Chinese rigs lack a lot on adjacent frequency rejection. Most activity in Kansas City is 2 meters. Mount in a car might determine what you buy. Can you recommend some dashboard mounting ideas.
I don't like mounting to the dash because the sun in Texas, where I live, would kill it, eventually. I'd prefer to mount under the dash or in a console
As always Jason, great job with laying out your top radios for 2022. I agree with you on Kenwood. They have great tried and true radios but lately Yaesu has taken the top spot. Subject to change if Kenwood gets back into the game. 73’
It has 16 memory slots, but you can add zones., 16 slots each. I don't recall if there is a limit to the number of zones at the moment. I have an Oklahoma zone, Georgia zone and a Texas Zone. Each one has 16 memorized freqs for that area.

i'm working my way through this video i don't have a half hour or the attention span but clicking through and picking up tips etc etc, does full featured mean it has APRS, D STAR, text etc etc? i can dump a wad of cash on a high dollar like that Yeasu to get all the features or is it ALL give and take based on use? EDIT: yes i clearly have a lot of learning to do, seems CB is dying and everyone is going mobile HAM so there is a lot to learn
I made that clear in the video. You can find better quality DMR radios on the commercial side, but none of those manufacturers want to make radios for the Amateur world.
@@HamRadio2 Was it one of your videos from a hamfest a couple or so years ago where the Kenwood guys said "stay tuned, we've got some exciting things coming in the near future" when the interviewer (you or whomever it was) asked them about DMR radios for amateur radio? I know I saw that but I don't remember where. I wish they would since they're doing so well with the NX5000 series radios. Even the NX3000 series.
@@HamRadio2 I beg to differ…Icom IC-7100 ALL band (excluding 1.25 meter) 160 through 70 cm, ALL mode HF/VHF/UHF. Great radio all in one box with remote control head. Yaesu also has at least one all band all mode. Was disappointed the 7100 was not included in the video. In my opinion, the 7100 is the ultimate mobile amateur radio on the market. It is showing it’s age with the simple monochromatic display panel, but in terms of performance versatility quality reliability and manufacturer support it can’t be beat. 73 de Chris AJ1G Stonington CT
The vrn7500 has multiple banks if 16 channels not just 16 channels. It also has APRS, SSTV, DTMF and CW decoder in the android app. It has a Apple app but is less supported than the android one and is more basic.
Thanks for pointing this out so I don't have to. As near as I can tell it has an unlimited number of banks of 16 channels. No shortage of memory on this unit except you have to switch between Banks which I find pretty handy. Easy to segregate channels for emergency freqs or just talking around or traveling to different areas.

The repeater database in my 5100, 52 & 705 is so useful. I only program local repeaters, the second I am out of town I switch to the database.

In your case the IC-7100 sounds perfect, but you aren't using it in a Mobile application. For a desktop of chair-side radio, it seems perfect.

What I like about the Icom 2730 is it's big bright display. The downside is all the extra parts that you have to buy if you want to mount it to the body, and those parts aren't cheap.
So I went the GMRS route prior to getting my ham. I have the 50v2, a kg1000g+, and a QYT 8900d all in the GMRS flavor. Now that I have my ham I have to start all over again. So I got an Anytone 778 for use till I get a more powerful one. Like one that matches my kg1000g+. I do have a ton of spare GMRS radios now so there’s that.

I really like the IC-2730A, but would love to hear if there is anything I should be considering? Another radio in that price/features arena? For my use case, privacy tones (CTCSS) are important. A couple of suggestions.
When driving I find simple is key. I do not want to be fiddling with a radio while operating in traffic. For that reason the Icom IC-2300H has been THE radio in my vehicle for three years now. VHF only, 65 watts output and bulletproof. This simple mobile radio should be in the hall of fame.
As to dual band mobile radios, I love them. The Alinco 735t is my favorite so we agree on that. A huge feature you did not mention is the 735T is full duplexing so I can use it for satellite work. Perhaps you can mention whether a dual band is full duplexing when you do the best of 2023. Thanks ! W0ZEN

Just picked up a FTM-300DR used and am taking my test in a week. Should be a fun little setup in my Jeep.
I have the 2730 and love the repeater mode it offers. I use it all the time to extend my handhelds range. As to the radio that you can use your phone with I would say be cautious. In some states being on your phone is illegal whereas being on your handmike is not.
I want to buy another car and xcvr for the car. thank you for the review it was informative when I make my decision.

This question was asked in another comment, but I will re-state my answer here.
That radio has been out of stock for a long time, and was rumored to be discontinued. After checking with R&L and after this video was released, I learned that no... the radio isn't discontinued, but it is in very limited supply and R&L hasn't had them in stock since this video was released. So while yes, I would love to add it to this list, since they are so hard to get, it doesn't seem worth mentioning. Once they finally do come back in stock, I will be making a new video for that mode.
**Correction The B-Tech 50X3 has several screen colors to choose from. I have had it in my truck for about a year. LOVE IT! My previous radio was the ICOM 2730A, I changed to the 50x3 when I discovered that the separate radio face had internal speakers as well. With the 2730 I have use external speaker as the body was mounted underneath the drivers seat. Without external speakers it was difficult to hear radio traffic while driving.

Excellent video, as always well thought out! I'm a big fan of mobile radios because they are so versatile. I have the FTM 400XD (just got it last year) ... BTW digital is on top (band A). Great radio if you have the money. I've been eyeing the Anytone 587UVII, especially after getting the 878UVII which I'm very happy with.

Thanks this is a lot of good information. I have a newer 4 door truck and thought I would mount the radio in the back behind the seats and the head up front. Of course that's what these radios are made for. I thing that's bothering me is the heads don't have a speaker in them so under normal conditions the volume would have to be cracked up to hear what was going on. I did notice that the BOAFENG BTECH does have speaker's in the head but most the others don't. Maybe it's not a problem but just something I was thinking about.

I have the Icom 2730 and it has cross band repeat. I use it all the time to talk to distant repeaters on my ht while working around the house.
I have the VGC and it's installed in my garage and hooked up to a dedicated GMRS J pole. I can literally be upstairs in my bedroom with my tablet and TX/RX with it via bluetooth. It's awesome. I've had the BTECH, both the GMRS version and HAM version. Both were a POS. Avoid it!! I have the FTM6000 in my QTH and it's an amazing radio. Basic, but audio quality is amazing. My two other radios are FTM 300 and FTM 400. Both amazing radios and easily moded for GMRS.
I’m glad that I stuck with the ICOM Id-5100. The 2730 is cool but I like the idea of having DStar like my 4100. Though I would get the 7300 for HF and get a Yaesu FTM 991 just to have YSF and wires-X.

i've got the VGC in my car and it's a cool radio! two quick things however, it's 16 channels per page... and you can have as many pages of memory as your device (phone or tablet) will allow. and the other thing, it will do APRS. oh.. and, it's open banded... this radio WILL transmit on FRS/GMRS as well as MURS channels. at 50 watts.
I looked on Amazin and Ebay and could not find these.
@14:00 in Australia on the lowest licence (foundation) we get all modes on 10m but no 6m until standard or advanced.

This 2730A is a great radio. One of the main reasons I like it is that the microphone plugs into the head of the unit. This allows me to put the radio in the trunk or under the seat or in the back seat. Nothing else does that.

Which radios does cross-band repeater function?
I know that many people do not care about it, but it is nice when you are away from your vehicle, but have you HT with you and you can use the cross-band repeat function to monitor or contact friends while on your HT even if your HT cannot hit the local repeater..
It also works nice as a call in radio or emergency repeater during times of emergency.
One thing you hit on for a couple of radios is how long each radio has been on the market. The older radios might not get firmware updates when a newer radio will more likely get updates on firmware.
Nice video though. It was timely in the fact that I am looking to update my mobile rig (currently FT-8900, not mounted in the truck yet) and looking to maybe buy something newer since the 8900 is about 20 years old.

At this time the yaesu is less than the icon 3700.

I stayed away from icom due to the white screens. If they had orange displays I'd have a shack full of them instead of Yeasu.
I went with the Yaesu 400's over the 300's because of the touch screen. Lots of great radio's in the video!

I got my 400 in 2015 it an original the only issue was the separation cable. Being able to mount the head on the dash and keep the mic down in the center console is good.
The AT-778 is a great mobile rig for most situations. At 130 dollars, easy to live with 25 watts.
I mentioned in the beginning of the video that this episode was for 50w radios. I am planning to make another one about 25w radios.
@@HamRadio2 I think the biggest issue I have with the 50W rigs at the price is no SSB. In most situations, a 25W rig is fine on FM

Great info Jason! I'm totally with you with the mic plug. I still run a Yaesu FT-8900 with the body under the passenger seat. I can't imagine an application where I would ever want to plug the mic in the body. This feature is a deal breaker for me when I look to up grade. Thanks again...

We had two 8900s. Since 2007 or 2008. If I had know they were being discontinued I would have gotten mine out of my jeep when it burnt to the ground a few years ago. Need a new radio since then and nothing has really caught my eye. I wish Yeasu would make a digital capable 8900 replacement.
I had the 8900 in my truck for a year and was disappointed. The knobs were small, fiddly and hard to adjust in a 4wd truck. Also the display was to small to safely view while driving. Switched to the ftm400, way overkill but I like the big display.
Hi and thank you for your videos. I’m coming to this late. I just got my license and I live in the Pocono mountains and want to get my first mobile rig. I was given a Baofeng Bf-8HP as a gift and I can’t reach anyone on it. I’ve narrowed my choices down to the Icom IC2730A and the Alinco DR735T. Is there a “Better” radio of the two? Or which in your opinion is the better value? I am looking for a radio with a cross repeater. I don’t like the Icom 5100 because the mic doesn’t connect to the face.

I like your videos. I bought several anytone mobile and a HT. Love the radios, like dmr. Im looking for a base radio that does at least 100W that will also have dmr functionality. I would like the base to be hf, vhf, uhf. I know Im asking alot, but want redundancy. Is there such a device out there? Or, what would be my best and cost effective way to equip my shack to cover those requirements?

What about the Anytone UV578UVIIIPro ? It is a quad band radio. 70cm/1.25M/2M and DMR all rolled into one radio.
I mentioned the PLUS radio in this video. At that time, the PRO version was sold out everywhere and the rumor was that the PLUS had replaced the PRO. Then...for some reason....Anytone started making the PRO again. I am not sure if this was by popular demand or if they had always intended to do this and just didn't tell anyone, but....today we have both versions, if you can find the PRO in stock anywhere. I personally own the PRO version, not the PLUS model, so yes - both are great radios, but at the time of this recording, I was under the impression that the PRO had been discontinued.

I got the ic-2730 for my first mobile radio. Its a great radio. I would recommend it to all new HAMS if they can get it. Great clip 7e3.
No PS port for digi. But for voice, good. Good sound. Easy to see control head. Has mike ports on base and control head. Nifty has a desk stand for control head.

I have used mostly Icom rigs in my vehicles the one exception was my old Yaesu FT8900r quad band rig 29,50,144 MHz 50 watts high power UHF was 40 watts. Put it together when I got rid of my pickup went to a Nissan Rogue wanted to put the 8900 in my car couldn’t find the base.
Haven’t had a mobile rig in my car since. Decided I needed to get one went with the TYT TH7900 dual band band. It’s only been 3 weeks thus far with the separation kit, bracket separation bracket think I was in it for $220 from Amazon. Nice little rig came with programming software as well, does what I need it to do. Also wanted a replacement for my FT 8900r which is out of production why I don’t know it was a great rig. Any who, picked up another TYT product the TH9800, quad band 29,50,144 is 50 watts max UHF is 40 same as the TH7900.
Again, came with everything software, mobile bracket, separation kit, faceplate bracket think I’m into it for $220 as well, still only 3 weeks into it, we do have a 6 meter repeater in my area, a net on Monday evenings. I get good audio reports from both, receive audio with external speakers is good as well. Jason I just tested out for my Tech lic. and would like your opinion on a really good mobile radio that is perfect for offroad/overland and one that I may use for a base radio for search and rescue that I can use in a backpack. I am looking at the QYT KT8900 duel band as my backpack and the Yaesu FTM 300DR for the truck. I know the QYT is cheap but would it work?
What makes the Wouxun KG-UV980P preferable over something like the TYT TH-9800? I don't see a lot of differences. Is the quality better?
Hi before you put your Btech 50x3 in your truck see if you can use the SKIP mode because I can't and I tried every which way.
ID-5100 it's incredible versatile dual watch radio.
Pretty fair review. I find the lower end Chinese rigs lack a lot on adjacent frequency rejection. Most activity in Kansas City is 2 meters. Mount in a car might determine what you buy. Can you recommend some dashboard mounting ideas.
I don't like mounting to the dash because the sun in Texas, where I live, would kill it, eventually. I'd prefer to mount under the dash or in a console

It has 16 memory slots, but you can add zones., 16 slots each. I don't recall if there is a limit to the number of zones at the moment. I have an Oklahoma zone, Georgia zone and a Texas Zone. Each one has 16 memorized freqs for that area.

Late question, on the Wouxum KG-UV980P can you lock the 10 meter out while you are a Tech? Is that an option to on any brand as I shop. I decided I must have the 1.25. Thanks

EDIT: yes i clearly have a lot of learning to do, seems CB is dying and everyone is going mobile HAM so there is a lot to learn

I made that clear in the video. You can find better quality DMR radios on the commercial side, but none of those manufacturers want to make radios for the Amateur world.
@@HamRadio2 Was it one of your videos from a hamfest a couple or so years ago where the Kenwood guys said "stay tuned, we've got some exciting things coming in the near future" when the interviewer (you or whomever it was) asked them about DMR radios for amateur radio? I know I saw that but I don't remember where. I wish they would since they're doing so well with the NX5000 series radios. Even the NX3000 series.

@@HamRadio2 I beg to differ…Icom IC-7100 ALL band (excluding 1.25 meter) 160 through 70 cm, ALL mode HF/VHF/UHF. Great radio all in one box with remote control head. Yaesu also has at least one all band all mode. Was disappointed the 7100 was not included in the video. In my opinion, the 7100 is the ultimate mobile amateur radio on the market. It is showing it’s age with the simple monochromatic display panel, but in terms of performance versatility quality reliability and manufacturer support it can’t be beat.

The vrn7500 has multiple banks if 16 channels not just 16 channels. It also has APRS, SSTV, DTMF and CW decoder in the android app. It has a Apple app but is less supported than the android one and is more basic.
Thanks for pointing this out so I don't have to. As near as I can tell it has an unlimited number of banks of 16 channels. No shortage of memory on this unit except you have to switch between Banks which I find pretty handy. Easy to segregate channels for emergency freqs or just talking around or traveling to different areas.
