- Back in May we were lucky enough to have Surgeon (Anthony Child) swing through our store in Bristol to chat about modular synths, his live setup, approaches and techniques for making live electronic music, and a general chat. The footage from the day was recorded and lovingly edited by our good friends at CHK One. Now presented here for folk who attended to refresh their memories and anyone from further afield to enjoy.

I've been a fan of Surgeon since the 1990s and now into modular and trying to play live sets myself. I'm very happy to hear about his ideas like this.
Surgeon is cool .
Surgeon plays The Steel Yard this saturday with Lady Starlight, Sterac aka Steve Rachmad, SHXCXCHCXSH- Live, µ-Ziq, Ceephax Acid Crew + more
You'd better not patch things when someone like Tony is talking :D
Maybe use more mics on the interviews? Lost a couple of questions.
Such a great guy - and legend too!
Lol! Prints out his modular grid setup
A N A L O G af
Interesting how he talks much faster than his recent interviews here, curious as to why
... Meth? Or Adderall or something? Demonic possession? Gave his heart and virginity to Jesus? Maybe he quit drinking? All of the above? Or non of the above... It's one of those answers, it has to be. Actually that's not exactly true. It could be two of the above, etc.
I would've loved to know about how and what or how he does the basses with his modular systems. I've seen him play live and he is fantastic. I was listening to his set and kept wondering about what he uses for bass? Is it a tom sound from the drum module or what? The reason I'm wondering is that it sounded so good. He adjusted the pitch of sound every now and again to accommodate the new pattern and that just kept me wondering what it was. Anyone?
If you're still looking for an answer. I think what you're hearing is A Turing Machine into a quantizer going to his oscillator, locking patterns that go to his looper (octatrack or 4ms looping delay)
Is there a link to his modular grid ?
www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/817172 You are welcome...
Thanks for the insights!
Joe Mox, is that what was used as the dekmantle gig kick? could just get lost in listening to the kick alone💥😁
The Dekmantel Modular-DJ set was carried by a Mutant Bass Drum. It's a 808 replica, so to say, still very characteristic. The Jomox Modbase 09 has 100 kicks and is way more punchy. Listen to his recent recordings. It's crazy.
Thanks for the info!💪
any idea how he uses the mutant over the the tracks? He is playing produced tracks in ableton and modular over the top in that set right. Just filtering low end of track in live?
Jo, Elevator "Sound". What about checking your setup for feedback before and prolly subtitle the questions of the speaker for us?
trust the scot to have a can of lager in his hand
CIDER - this is Bristol
And not STFU also
Modular is expensive but if you can afford it by all means go for it!
Amazing, I cant believe he is 63 years old he looks in his 30's
Modular Cat holy shit had no idea he was in his 60s wild yah he looks 35
63 ? right....!
He’s 64 in November.
I can't believe he is only 17! And he's done so much to spread the dark chaos.
Surgeon was born on June 5th 1984. He's 39 years old this summer and he looks great.
What’s setup o have to say with Surgeon music u have to let to grown on you and grow up to understand true inspiration
Anybody but me is getting nervouos with that noise gate constantly open and closing in the audio dialogue?
Enol Balado ~16khz resonance
Take a look at ehsin gelsi or state azure
Sorry ...

I like how Surgeon uses an Elektron Octatrack with modular gear.
Awesome! Thanks for uploading this!
What kind of looper is he using here? Turing machine?
Beatstep Pro. Turing machine isn’t a looper.
finally a really good talks with SURGEON thanks !
I think you've got to see this vimeo.com/225625900
what up with the shitty audio?
ble ble ble no sound ble ble.....
"is cool",lol.
This whole hardware modular thing seems entirely pointless, you can do the same and more on an iPad.
Dale Cunningham can ye aye
Dale Cunningham nope
These days the software is honesty as good sounding as hardware and has instant patch recall of course. I like surgeon a lot and have done since the 90s but this seems more like a way to try to look "different" on stage rather than to actually do anything particularly interesting musically.
and stil its 1000 times more fun in real
Both are dope. I have and use a make noise shared system, as well as iPad apps. I’m really lucky to have fell into the cash to get a modular. It’s not necessary at all, no. I’ve learned a lot about computer synthesis using a hardware modular, though. And likewise I’ve learned a lot about modular strategies using iPad apps and software like Reaktor. Modular is a different mindset and it’s a lot of fun, but you can get into it for free using VCV rack for computer, or cheap using Zmors or Audulus or even the Moog Model 15 apps for iPad
